1. Task 9
TASK 9 – AUDIENCE RESEARCH-QUALITATIVE-AUDIENCE
PROFILE AND FOCUS GROUPS
The stereo typical view of who will use my magazine is that mainly Afro Caribbean
people will mostly listen to this genre of music (Hip Hop).
I interviewed 5 people of my target audience for this task (5 boys). Three of them
were 17 years old and the other two were 18 years old. There names were Huzifa,
Oyama, Hisham, Luke and Jordan. 2 of the people were of African background and
two of the people were of Afro Caribbean Background and the other boy was of
English background.
I asked all 5 of the boys the same questions. The questions were ......
2. The questions asked were
• Would you like to focus the magazine on the UK or USA and why?
All of the people that were questioned answered with USA and the reasons were that they think
Hip Hop is better in the USA, they prefer the USA style compared to the UK style, they don't
like UK Hip Hop and that they think the USA artists lyrics are better.
The answers from this question made me decide that the magazine is going to be an USA style
but if it definitely going to feature about UK Hip Hop artists because there doesn't really
seem to be a national magazine that caters for UK Rap.
• What type of language would you expect in the magazine and why?
Everyone answered that they would prefer formal language because it makes the magazine seem
more professional but the titles and article Headlines they would not mind a bit of Informal
words to make the magazine more catchy. From this information I have decided to do exactly
what the results tell me because I think it would be the best option for the magazine.
• What would you like to see on the front cover of the magazine?
They would like to see pictures of artists on the front cover and bright colours, because this is
what I planned to do for my magazine, it meant I am now definitely going to do that for my
magazine.
3. • Would you prefer to see more information in the magazine about tour dates or
articles about artists?
Two people answered saying tour dates and 3 People answered saying articles about
artists. From the results taking into consideration the number of people questioned
was an odd number I have decided to equally balance the two throughout my
magazine.
Would you prefer too see more images throughout the double page spreads or more
articles?
All of the people questioned answered saying articles, but I still think there needs to be
a significant number of pictures throughout the double page spreads, because I
think it is more catchy.
This was a useful way of research because it gave me more information about some of
my target audience and what they prefer. It also gave me extra ideas about what is
going to feature in my magazine.
