1. What gender are you?
Female Male
Male- 6
Female-4
My target audience is male and female 11-16 year olds so I tried to give
my questionnaire to around the same number of both genders so I
achieved this by only having two more males. I was interested to see
the feedback given and I wanted to know the gender of whose opinion
that was.
2. How old are you?
11-13
14-16
17-19
11-13 – 0
14-16 – 9
17-19 – 1
My target audience is aged around 11-16 so I tried to focus my questionnaire around those ages. I
gave my questionnaire to people around the college campus, many of whom were my age. I used this
question because I wanted to know more about the person who has filled in my questionnaire as it
will help me understand their answers and how I can accommodate to the needs of people around
this age.
3. What approximate price would you be willing to pay for a typical music magazine?

The answers to this question are interesting because many music magazines are priced over £2 yet
only 3 people out of the questionnaire I conducted said they would be willing to spend that. This is
where I feel my music magazine could be successful because if I can lower the price of my magazine
then I will be potentially reaching out to a much larger audience than some magazines currently do. It
is hard to create a magazine between £1.00 and £1.99 though so a compromise may have to be
reached.

I was quite surprised by the answers to this question as I thought a lot more people would have
purchased a music magazine in their life as music is a hobby that many enjoy and many listen to from
an early age. I was also quite concerned by this because if 80% of my target audience have never
purchased a music magazine before then I could struggle to be successful in selling copies. Therefore I
have to make sure I listen to all the feedback and try to make a magazine that will convince them to
purchase mine.
5. My magazine is going to be based on the pop genre what kind of artists would you expect to feature
in it?

I was not surprised with the answers given to this question as all of these artists feature regularly in the charts.
By just putting chart artists I felt those people may not particularly like the pop genre or be familiar with those

who fall into it. I bel ieve it's interesting that people assume people like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez would
be in my magazine because I think this shows that people view pop magazines as featuring all these artists that
have a predominantly female fan base. I plan to include current and successful artists in my magazine and not
necessarily the artists I feel are the most popular.

From this question I know to include what's currently in the charts and also the latest music news. These can
easily be missed and people don’t always have time to read all the latest news and see the current charts. I
believe interviews are an important part of magazines as they offer an insight into the lives into musicians.
Reviews on songs would also be interesting as I could get different people's opinions on the latest music.

This was another question that I was slightly concerned by the responses to because the people who
answered couldn’t see themselves purchasing a magazine on a consistent basis. I would have
understood if it was about how often they currently purchase a mus ic magazine but I was asking them
to think of a magazine they liked and how often they would be willing to purchase that. I feel that if
the magazine is over £2.00 then it must be a monthly magazine as a lot of people in my target
audience wouldn’t be will ing to spend that each week.

Price is a big reason whether a person in my
target audience would purchase a magazine or
not so I have to consider that a lot. From my own
experiences I felt that if I could potentially
receive each magazine to my doorstep and save money on each copy then I would highly consider it.
This feeling was felt by the majority of my respondents because you have a financial incentive and it's
also more convenient not having to go to a shop to purchase it.

The results on this were very split and I think that’s
because it is hard to answer without knowing what the
gift is. The quality of gifts given in magazines varies so I
feel that’s the reason why so many answered possibly.
Many people are encouraged by a free gift as they feel that they are getting their money's worth.
10. What do you dislike most about music magazines?

I was really pleased with the responses to this question as
I had previously outlined my desire to create a magazine
for both genders so when many of the male respondents
felt that pop magazines targeted teenage girls to much I
was glad. The other answers were also good because
advertising can be annoying when it has nothing to do with music and when it takes up the whole
page. However in order to make my magazine the price that many would pay I may have to include

The genres of music that people preferred was varied and this is what I would have expected. Pop
music is a lot of peoples favourite and indie i s currently gaining a lot of popularity. Music is such a
large entertainment industry that people will like a lot of different things so it was difficult for some
to just pick one and some would have possibly felt they liked several genres equally.

the free gift question earlier I think it depends on what competition it is. I also feel that with current
technology I could make it easy to enter the competition and people wouldn’t have to send an envelope to an
address like they previously had to. One of the main reasons people don’t enter competitions is because they
never win so I could tackle this by giving away a large quantity of smaller prizes to increase the chances of
winning.
