Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The reader of POP Party is a young female between the ages of 8 and 13. She is a girl with a rangeof
unique abilities such as sport that make her very popular. She is becoming well educated and popular so
she likes to have detailed discussions about her favourite music and television programmes as well as
playful banter with her friends. She is a confident individual but shy around boys her age. Young enough
to still speak her mind, she has plenty of people wanting to talk to her about the new and exciting things
that arecurrently going on. Not an arrogant person, she shares her time around with her best friends
when inviting the around her house. Being an individual with many friends, she does not need to follow
the crowd. Being young however, she likes to keep in with the latest make-up and fashion trends that
they see their favourite Pop artists wearing.
A primary schooler or early secondary schooler, she belongs with the cool kids and dreams to be rich and
famous. She enjoys school as it is another way to socialise with her friends, with generous parents, they
enjoy reading the latest gossip through music websites on their computer. Living with her parents, the
girl wants something to do all of the time and listens to a lot of her favourite artist’smusic when she is
not getting attention from her parents. The pop genre reflects her fun and bubbly personality. With
similar friends, she bonds well with others who like her style. Being young and single, she wants to enjoy
her own time instead of wasting it.
Being young, she believes in eating unhealthy because it tastes better than the healthy food. She
competes in extracurricular activity such as sports clubs outside of school to try and stay in shape. She
likes to have takeaway foods with her friends when they come round have lots of fatty foods and drinks.
She likes McDonalds and KFC as well as having her favourite drink as Coca-Cola and orange or
blackcurrant squash. Her favourite channels are music channels such as MTV Hits as well as nickelodeon
and nick toons. She is not too interested in fashion, however she keeps up with her music idols trends
and activities. She avoids purchasing items of clothing that make her look too masculine as she likes to
look Girly. She likes buying posters of her favourite music artists and likes to stick them up in her room.
Music is a huge passion of hers, she listens to it every day to the point where it has become an essential
part of her life. The artist changes based on her mood and what she is doing at the time but there is
always time for her favourite song. She dreams of visiting concerts that aresold out and being invited on
to the stage to sing along with the artist. She enjoys the latest pop charts on MTV and has it almost on
repeat, she has all of her favourites stored on her iPod which runs out of battery every day. She likes all
types of pop music, for example bands and solo artists. The fast and exciting beat inspires and motivates
her when she is doing sport, and in everyday life. She loves the refreshing sounds of new pop songs that
have only just been released. She races against her friends to learn the song lyrics the quickest in hope
they can be bellowing the out at their concert they are hoping to get tickets to.
The reader of POP Party does not read any other music magazines because they do not have as much or
as good content and do not include all of the information about her favourite artists such as boy bands
and Justin Bieber she wants. Her favourite artists are these because she thinks there good looking and
cute. However, she does read some party magazines around the time of her birthday as she wants to
throw the best birthday in her school year. She likes watching movies in her spare time on Friday night
with her friends. She likes the drama genre as well as the love and comedy films. She does not read any
other music genres as she does not like the male tone or the content inside. The reader is very active and
loves reading these issues with or around friends so they can then discuss what they think about the hot
new songs and the amazingly interesting new celeb gossip before any other magazine. She watches
drama programmes like EastEnders and likes watching programmes such as the Thundermans, icarly and
victorious.
