Nageswar Rao. A
English Teacher.
Let us study the following sentences:
I wished to talk to my daughter. I phoned her.
Wishing to talk to my daughter, I phoned her.
I was tired of teaching. I sat down to rest.
Being tired of teaching, I sat down to rest.
He ran after the ball. He hurt himself.
Running after the ball, he hurt himself.
When two actions occur at the same time, and are done
by the same person or thing, we can use Present
Participle to describe one of them.
Study the following sentences:
He took his suitcase. He left his cabin.
Taking his suitcase, he left his cabin.
The students saw the teacher. They sat silently.
Seeing the teacher, all the students sat silently.
The child felt the mother’s hand. It stopped crying.
Feeling the mother’s hand, the child stopped crying.
When one action follows very quickly after another done
by same person or thing, we express the first action
with a Present Participle.
Because he felt hungry, he went into the kitchen and opened
the fridge.
Feeling hungry, he went into the kitchen and opened the
fridge.
As the child felt the mother’s hand, it stopped crying.
Feeling the mother’s hand, the child stopped crying.
Since the students saw their teacher, they sat silently.
Seeing their teacher, the students sat silently.
Present Participle can be used instead of a phrase starting “as,
because and since” and it explains the cause or reason for an
action.

Synthesis of two sentences using Present Participles.

  • 1. Compiled andVoiced by Nageswar Rao. A English Teacher.
  • 2. Let us study the following sentences: I wished to talk to my daughter. I phoned her. Wishing to talk to my daughter, I phoned her. I was tired of teaching. I sat down to rest. Being tired of teaching, I sat down to rest. He ran after the ball. He hurt himself. Running after the ball, he hurt himself. When two actions occur at the same time, and are done by the same person or thing, we can use Present Participle to describe one of them.
  • 3. Study the following sentences: He took his suitcase. He left his cabin. Taking his suitcase, he left his cabin. The students saw the teacher. They sat silently. Seeing the teacher, all the students sat silently. The child felt the mother’s hand. It stopped crying. Feeling the mother’s hand, the child stopped crying. When one action follows very quickly after another done by same person or thing, we express the first action with a Present Participle.
  • 4. Because he felt hungry, he went into the kitchen and opened the fridge. Feeling hungry, he went into the kitchen and opened the fridge. As the child felt the mother’s hand, it stopped crying. Feeling the mother’s hand, the child stopped crying. Since the students saw their teacher, they sat silently. Seeing their teacher, the students sat silently. Present Participle can be used instead of a phrase starting “as, because and since” and it explains the cause or reason for an action.
