Syncope, or fainting, is the abrupt loss of consciousness resulting from transient reduced blood flow to the brain. It accounts for 1-3% of pediatric emergency visits, with 80% being neurocardiogenic syncope. A history focused on hydration, activity preceding fainting, and medications can help determine if the syncope was neurocardiogenic or due to other causes like seizures or cardiac issues which account for 10-15% of cases. Evaluation may include ECG, chest x-ray, blood tests and orthostatic vital signs to check for low blood pressure upon standing.
