This document summarizes a MapLearning program that aims to teach design students important skills through hands-on projects that benefit developing communities. The program focuses on (1) bringing back mechanical skills through low-tech design projects, (2) increasing partnerships between various fields to solve real-world problems, and (3) shifting students' mindsets from just problem-solving to also seeking opportunities to improve lives. Students would work directly with users in the field on rapid prototyping and getting constant feedback to ensure their designs meet community needs in a sustainable, culturally-sensitive way. The goal is to develop a new generation of socially-responsible designers committed to creating a more humane future for all.
