QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS
AND ANALYSIS
Saeed Moulai
SECTION A - DEMOGRAPHICS
• It is obvious from my results that the majority of my audience are male and with these
results should consider the representation of the male gender within my music video.
• From this I re-enforced the idea that I want to use males in my music video because as
well as suiting the genre well, the majority of my target audience can empathise with the
characters.
GENDER IS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION
BECAUSE IT CAN GIVE ME A SENSE OF
WHAT ELEMENTS AND CODES &
CONVENTIONS TO INCORPORATE IN
MY MUSIC VIDEO
• It is clear to see from the answers that my target audience is mainly young people, with
over 75% of my target audience being between the ages of 14-30. This fits in the plans of
my music video, with all aspects appealing and fitting in with teenagers and people in
their twenties.
• The track, the actors, the genre and the mise-en-scene all fit in well with this age group.
• The tone and mood of the song in my opinion is very rebellious, and this age group are
known s rebellious, its where they are no longer children but aren't quite completely
matured adults, there is a sense of recklessness and carefree.
AGE IS A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT
TO CONSIDER, IT CAN HELP
INDICATE WHAT CONTENT MY
MUSIC VIDEO SHOULD CONTAIN
• This question has determined the intelligence of my target audience. A surprisingly large
percentage of my target audience have completed higher education, such as university. This means
that they are likely to be intelligent and aware of their surroundings and the culture around them,
as well as being likely to understand the deeper meaning and develop a deeper understanding of
my music video, instead of just viewing it superficially.
• With my target audience showing they have studied at university this indicates they are intelligent,
a large proportion of my target audience are also studying a levels which shows intelligence. Many
are at the age of studying GCSEs / A Levels too.
A INDICATION OF LEVEL OF
EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT WHEN
RESEARCHING DEMOGRAPHICALLY
IT IS IMPORTANT TO DETERMINE THE
EMPLOYMENT STATUS OF MY TARGET
AUDIENCE BECAUSE IT GIVES AN INDICATION
OF WHAT CODES AND CONVENTIONS I CAN
INCORPORATE, AS WELL AS FINDING THEIR
SOCIAL GRADE
• Here we can see that most of target audience are in full time education or are full
time students. This matches the fact that most of my level of education answers are
that they have completed degrees.
• This re-enforces that my target audience is intelligent through the fact that they are
all in full time employment, or young people which can be seen through the fact
that they are in full time education.
I WOULD LIKE TO DETERMINE MY
TARGET AUDIENCES HOUSEHOLD
INCOME SO I CAN DECIPHER THEIR
SOCIAL GRADE AND LEVEL OF
INTELLIGENCE
• Most of my target audience have a relatively high household income, and I think that
instead of representing their own income, they have displayed the income of their
parents who, as students, most of them live with.
• There are a few who don’t earn over £30,000, and these people are likely to be the
young adults who have just started full time employment and are likely to be on a low
starting wage.
SECTION B - PSYCHOGRAPHICS
TO DECIPHER MY TARGET AUDIENCE, I NEED
TO SEE WHAT TYPES OF GENRE OF MUSIC MY
TARGET AUDIENCE APPEAR TO PREFER
• The most popular genres here are Indie which managed 8 votes, and Pop which
managed 12 votes.
• This bodes well for my film because it is of course indie pop genre, so it is clear
that my audience will be pleased with what they are going to listen to and hear.
• Other popular genres include RnB, Rap, Drum & Bass and Hip-Hop.
I FELT THAT IT WAS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO
KNOW HOW MY TARGET AUDIENCE LISTEN TO
MUSIC, IT ALSO CAN HELP TO SHOW HOW MY
TARGET AUDIENCE SPENDS THEIR MONEY
• From my results here it is clear to see that there are two standout answers, which are
Apple Music and Spotify (both 29.4% each). It is worth noting that these two services are
worldwide the most popular for streaming music
• My target audience uses these two services because as well as being the easist to use
with a wide range of music, they also have many kinds of indie and indie pop music, with
a large range to select from, and this will please my target audience.
I ASKED THIS QUESTION BECAUSE I
WANTED TO KNOW THE
IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC VIDEOS TO
MY TARGET AUDIENCE
• Like most of the music watching population, over half (52.9%) of my target audience
watch music videos monthly. This is very common throughout all types of genres for
music videos.
• The second highest answer is weekly, so it is clear to see that it is more common that
people watch them regularly than not being regularly.
• In general I think it would be fair to say that music videos are fairly popular in my target
audience.
THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF MUSIC
VIDEOS, WHICH ARE NARRATIVE,
PERFORMANCE AND CONCEPTUAL. MY
PLAN IS TO HAVE A COMPLETE
NARRATIVE MUSIC VIDEO.
• The majority of my target audiences voted that narrative was narrative was their favorite
kind of music video, with performance coming in a close second with over a third of the
votes.
• My plans are for a performance video, and although my target audience do not have
narrative as their preferred type, it is still a popular choice and it will not affect my plans
I ASKED THIS QUESTION TO GATHER A
DEEPER UNDERSTANDING TO WHAT MY
AUDIENCE WOULD LIKE TO SEE, BECAUSE
ONLY WHEN MY AUDIENCE LIKE MY MEDIA
PRODUCT CAN I DEEM IT SUCCESSFUL
• The two most popular aspects to what my target audience would like to see in my
music video are a band playing with instruments, and behind the scenes action of the
bands.
• It’s positive to hear this because I am planning to incorporate both of these aspects into
my music video, and it is clear to see this is what my target audience would like to see.
• A band playing had the second highest with 10 votes and behind the scenes had the
highest with 11 votes.
SECTION C – MUSIC VIDEO SPECIFIC
I FELT THIS WAS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION
TO ASK BECAUSE I NEEDED TO KNOW WHAT
KIND OF TONE TO GIVE OFF FOR THE MUSIC
VIDEO
• My initial plan was that the song gave off tones and feelings of rebellion and
uprising through the tone of the song and the lyrics, it is clear to see here that my
target audience agreed with my thinking, by presenting 41% of the votes.
• This has not changed my plan at all for the tone of the song, and I will continue how
I was.
• The second highest was uplifting, and the second highest was superiority. Both of
these in a way link in with the feeling of rebellion/uprising.
I WANTED TO BE CONCISE WITH MY LINE OF
QUESTIONING AND GET ANSWERS WHICH I
COULD REALLY TAKE INFORMATION FROM,
AND THIS WAS VERY USEFUL
• Initially I wanted to have a performance video for my band, and after asking which
type of music video is my target audiences favorite, the results came back that
narrative was the best, I was skeptical over having a performance video. But after
this my confidence in a performance video has been restored. This is after 88.2% of
my target audience agreed.
• Having a performance video is also typical of the indie pop genre so it will appeal
to a larger audience. It also links in with other genres.
AS PART OF MY LIGHTING, I
WANTED TO KNOW WHAT COLORS
WOULD SUIT BEST AND BE
ASSOCIATED WITH THE SONG
• A whopping 58.8% of my band chose that darker colours such as ruby red, purple,
dark green and dark blue would suit my music video best, this is opposed to bright
colours and monochrome.
• This is typical of the indie pop genre and it also means that I will not have to
change my plans, where I initially tried to incorporate these colours through
lighting and shadowing.
I WANTED TO KNOW WHETHER MY
TARGET AUDIENCE WOULD PREFER A
MALE OR FEMALE AS THE LEAD
SINGER, TO SEE WHICH ONE WOULD
APPEAL MORE
• A vast majority of my target audience, 82.4% in fact, voted that a male would be
the better option as a lead singer in my band.
• This is good because I initially had a male as lead singer in band, and this
information has made it sure that I would like a male as lead singer.
• It is also very typical of the indie pop genre to have a lead singer who is male, so by
this I will be conforming to the codes and conventions of the genre.
I USED THIS QUESTION TO GET
ANOTHER OPINION ON THE
COSTUME OF MY ACTORS, TO SEE IF
I HAD TO CHANGE IT OR NOT
• The vast majority of my target audience said that it would be best for my actors
to wear costume typical of the indie pop genre which are jeans, hoodies, t shirts
and trainers.
• This consolidates my plans and has made me more sure about what I want in my
film, with the knowledge that it is what my target audience wants too.

This fits in the plans of my music video, with all aspects appealing and fitting in with teenagers and people in their twenties. • The track, the actors, the genre and the mise-en-scene all fit in well with this age group. • The tone and mood of the song in my opinion is very rebellious, and this age group are known s rebellious, its where they are no longer children but aren't quite completely matured adults, there is a sense of recklessness and carefree. AGE IS A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT TO CONSIDER, IT CAN HELP INDICATE WHAT CONTENT MY MUSIC VIDEO SHOULD CONTAIN
  • 5. • This question has determined the intelligence of my target audience. A surprisingly large percentage of my target audience have completed higher education, such as university. This means that they are likely to be intelligent and aware of their surroundings and the culture around them, as well as being likely to understand the deeper meaning and develop a deeper understanding of my music video, instead of just viewing it superficially. • With my target audience showing they have studied at university this indicates they are intelligent, a large proportion of my target audience are also studying a levels which shows intelligence. Many are at the age of studying GCSEs / A Levels too. A INDICATION OF LEVEL OF EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT WHEN RESEARCHING DEMOGRAPHICALLY
  • 6. IT IS IMPORTANT TO DETERMINE THE EMPLOYMENT STATUS OF MY TARGET AUDIENCE BECAUSE IT GIVES AN INDICATION OF WHAT CODES AND CONVENTIONS I CAN INCORPORATE, AS WELL AS FINDING THEIR SOCIAL GRADE • Here we can see that most of target audience are in full time education or are full time students. This matches the fact that most of my level of education answers are that they have completed degrees. • This re-enforces that my target audience is intelligent through the fact that they are all in full time employment, or young people which can be seen through the fact that they are in full time education.
  • 7. I WOULD LIKE TO DETERMINE MY TARGET AUDIENCES HOUSEHOLD INCOME SO I CAN DECIPHER THEIR SOCIAL GRADE AND LEVEL OF INTELLIGENCE • Most of my target audience have a relatively high household income, and I think that instead of representing their own income, they have displayed the income of their parents who, as students, most of them live with. • There are a few who don’t earn over £30,000, and these people are likely to be the young adults who have just started full time employment and are likely to be on a low starting wage.
  • 8. SECTION B - PSYCHOGRAPHICS
  • 9. TO DECIPHER MY TARGET AUDIENCE, I NEED TO SEE WHAT TYPES OF GENRE OF MUSIC MY TARGET AUDIENCE APPEAR TO PREFER • The most popular genres here are Indie which managed 8 votes, and Pop which managed 12 votes. • This bodes well for my film because it is of course indie pop genre, so it is clear that my audience will be pleased with what they are going to listen to and hear. • Other popular genres include RnB, Rap, Drum & Bass and Hip-Hop.
  • 10. I FELT THAT IT WAS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO KNOW HOW MY TARGET AUDIENCE LISTEN TO MUSIC, IT ALSO CAN HELP TO SHOW HOW MY TARGET AUDIENCE SPENDS THEIR MONEY • From my results here it is clear to see that there are two standout answers, which are Apple Music and Spotify (both 29.4% each). It is worth noting that these two services are worldwide the most popular for streaming music • My target audience uses these two services because as well as being the easist to use with a wide range of music, they also have many kinds of indie and indie pop music, with a large range to select from, and this will please my target audience.
  • 11. I ASKED THIS QUESTION BECAUSE I WANTED TO KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC VIDEOS TO MY TARGET AUDIENCE • Like most of the music watching population, over half (52.9%) of my target audience watch music videos monthly. This is very common throughout all types of genres for music videos. • The second highest answer is weekly, so it is clear to see that it is more common that people watch them regularly than not being regularly. • In general I think it would be fair to say that music videos are fairly popular in my target audience.
  • 12. THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF MUSIC VIDEOS, WHICH ARE NARRATIVE, PERFORMANCE AND CONCEPTUAL. MY PLAN IS TO HAVE A COMPLETE NARRATIVE MUSIC VIDEO. • The majority of my target audiences voted that narrative was narrative was their favorite kind of music video, with performance coming in a close second with over a third of the votes. • My plans are for a performance video, and although my target audience do not have narrative as their preferred type, it is still a popular choice and it will not affect my plans
  • 13. I ASKED THIS QUESTION TO GATHER A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING TO WHAT MY AUDIENCE WOULD LIKE TO SEE, BECAUSE ONLY WHEN MY AUDIENCE LIKE MY MEDIA PRODUCT CAN I DEEM IT SUCCESSFUL • The two most popular aspects to what my target audience would like to see in my music video are a band playing with instruments, and behind the scenes action of the bands. • It’s positive to hear this because I am planning to incorporate both of these aspects into my music video, and it is clear to see this is what my target audience would like to see. • A band playing had the second highest with 10 votes and behind the scenes had the highest with 11 votes.
  • 14. SECTION C – MUSIC VIDEO SPECIFIC
  • 15. I FELT THIS WAS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION TO ASK BECAUSE I NEEDED TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF TONE TO GIVE OFF FOR THE MUSIC VIDEO • My initial plan was that the song gave off tones and feelings of rebellion and uprising through the tone of the song and the lyrics, it is clear to see here that my target audience agreed with my thinking, by presenting 41% of the votes. • This has not changed my plan at all for the tone of the song, and I will continue how I was. • The second highest was uplifting, and the second highest was superiority. Both of these in a way link in with the feeling of rebellion/uprising.
  • 16. I WANTED TO BE CONCISE WITH MY LINE OF QUESTIONING AND GET ANSWERS WHICH I COULD REALLY TAKE INFORMATION FROM, AND THIS WAS VERY USEFUL • Initially I wanted to have a performance video for my band, and after asking which type of music video is my target audiences favorite, the results came back that narrative was the best, I was skeptical over having a performance video. But after this my confidence in a performance video has been restored. This is after 88.2% of my target audience agreed. • Having a performance video is also typical of the indie pop genre so it will appeal to a larger audience. It also links in with other genres.
  • 17. AS PART OF MY LIGHTING, I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT COLORS WOULD SUIT BEST AND BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE SONG • A whopping 58.8% of my band chose that darker colours such as ruby red, purple, dark green and dark blue would suit my music video best, this is opposed to bright colours and monochrome. • This is typical of the indie pop genre and it also means that I will not have to change my plans, where I initially tried to incorporate these colours through lighting and shadowing.
  • 18. I WANTED TO KNOW WHETHER MY TARGET AUDIENCE WOULD PREFER A MALE OR FEMALE AS THE LEAD SINGER, TO SEE WHICH ONE WOULD APPEAL MORE • A vast majority of my target audience, 82.4% in fact, voted that a male would be the better option as a lead singer in my band. • This is good because I initially had a male as lead singer in band, and this information has made it sure that I would like a male as lead singer. • It is also very typical of the indie pop genre to have a lead singer who is male, so by this I will be conforming to the codes and conventions of the genre.
  • 19. I USED THIS QUESTION TO GET ANOTHER OPINION ON THE COSTUME OF MY ACTORS, TO SEE IF I HAD TO CHANGE IT OR NOT • The vast majority of my target audience said that it would be best for my actors to wear costume typical of the indie pop genre which are jeans, hoodies, t shirts and trainers. • This consolidates my plans and has made me more sure about what I want in my film, with the knowledge that it is what my target audience wants too.
