Structuralism is a method of interpretation that focuses on relationships between elements in a conceptual system. It views structure as more important than function. Structuralists are interested in the interrelationship between units (surface phenomena) and rules for how units can be combined. Words are organized according to the grammatical rules of a language to create meaning. Structuralists believe the human mind generates meaningful systems by organizing units according to rules. Every culture has its own linguistic structure and cultural phenomena can be analyzed through a universal structuralist lens.
