The Anxiety Of Lithium Chloride Causes Mild Illness
Introduction
Animals can be conditioned to display or not display a variety of behaviors and emotions, including
taste preference. This form of conditioning has even been successfully done in humans by using
rotation induced motion sickness after consuming either a familiar or unfamiliar flavored beverage to
create a distaste for the beverage (especially the unfamiliar flavored one) (Arwas, Rolnick, Lubow,
1989).
A very common way to teach rats to dislike a certain taste is to give them injection(s) of lithium
chloride (LiCl) directly after consuming a taste stimulus. The lithium chloride causes mild illness,
which the rats connect to the taste stimulus, essentially because they believe the food/drink they
consumed caused the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For best results, LiCl should be measured as an absolute quantity, not as a volume or concentration
(Nachman Ashe 1973). These studies (among others) show that LiCl is an effective unconditioned
stimulus for taste aversion when administered in correct dosages.
Though many studies have observed the effects of taste aversion, fewer studies have focused on the
influence of feeding on this conditioned aversion. In essence, conditioning is a form of learning, and
learning requires memory. One study used the pond snail Lymnaea to show that food deprivation
lowers blood glucose levels and levels of insulin circulating; therefore, it decreases the animal s ability
to remember the pairing of taste stimulus and the noxious stimulus (Mita Koichi 2014).
This study manipulates the preference for sucrose by administering lithium chloride (LiCl) to the rats
after consumption of sucrose. The researchers sought to determine whether rats given access to free
feeding would display more or less taste aversion than rats who were deprived of food after the LiCl
injection.
Methods Materials
This study used eight adult male Long Evans rats of average size. Rats were housed separately, each in
his own cage on a nocturnal light dark cycle (lights off at 7:00 AM, lights on at 7:00 PM). Each rat
was given 1 hour of

Early Christianity And Greco-Roman Culture
Considering the early Christian believes such as the old testament that prohibits the making of graven
images ,then it would be wise to analyze why the early Christians came up with their art in the first
place . The use of images in early Christianity played an important role especially in spreading the
religion .Most of the target converts were the Greco Romans who had the culture of art from the
beginning . The influence that Greco Roman culture had on the converts continued . The converts
continued to practice burial cultures such as use of catacombs to bury the dead . Catacombs were
common among the average and poor Romans while sarcophagi or marble tombs were used by the
wealthy(Guntram 40) . The Christians converts dug their catacombs

The Social Factors Of Public Interest In Public...
Public interest refers to the social factors or influence decision making by administrators in public
administration. Public interest in public administration falls in four broad categories. Firstly is the
perfectionist point of view. Under this, public interest is viewed from the point of excellence
promotion in social activities. According to this view, public resources should be spent in a manner
that most of the society members benefit fully from. Herring, E. P. (1936). Public administration and
the public interest.
Secondly is the intuitionist category. Under this category in case of conflicting situations, the
administration chooses an option by intuition. This is to say that an organization chooses an
intuitionist solution that seems the right course of action to be undertaken in given circumstances.
Herring, E. P. (1936). Public administration and the public interest. Another on is derived from the
theory of justice. This is as pronounced by the philosopher John Rawls. He suggests that two basic
principles of justice to be followed in testing public interest n public administration . Actually, one of
this is that every individual ought to have equal right to the most extensive basic liberty that is
compatible with another liberty for others. Finally, is the utilitarianism category. According to this
particular category public interest is served when a given public policy makes one a little better off
even though it may make some individuals somehow worse.

Brain Plasticity
The brain is a remarkable engine. It is so remarkable, and complex that researchers and neuroscientist
today are still discovering many fascinating wonders about the brain. Brain plasticity is an area with a
substantial amount of research. Brain plasticity is the brains ability to change and reorganize the
components of it s structures and mechanism (Mikadze, 2014). This is an extraordinary ability that the
brain has. It is even more amazing to consider how the brain does this after brain damage in stroke
patients. In order to comprehend just how wonderful brain plasticity after brain damage due to stroke
is, it is important to consider the different types of stokes, several theories, ideas and techniques that

Knowing that the brain can undergo incredible damage and through many different process regain
some functioning, or all functioning is simply spectacular. Even though the brain is almost impossible
to fully understand, because of brain plasticity it is incredibly resilient and one remarkable engine.

My Passion For Reading
My passion for reading is an aspect of me that has never failed to go unnoticed it is hardly a surprise
for those around me to see a book in my hand wherever I go, absorbed by a world that was not
invented by me. As a result of this, I was recognised within school as my picture was placed on the
wall in the English Department praising how much I read. As a child I wanted to become an author so
the ability to enter somebody s thoughts through words on a page has always filled me with a genuine
excitement. There is no doubt that an English degree at University is for me, I want to continue my
love for the subject in depth and take this further to become a Secondary Teacher of English.
Through studying English at University I will be able to study modules that truly fascinate me and
encourage me to read books more imaginatively and critically. Recently in the news it has been said
that due to Brexit there is the possibility that a new language could be forming Euro English.
Developments in the English language never fail to intrigue me as teaching English at a secondary
school is the career I am working towards and this ultimately changes the future of teaching.
At A level I study English Literature, Psychology and Biology all of which are essay based. Essay
based subjects are beneficial to me as this is how I am most comfortable working. I also completed the
Extended Project Qualification in which I chose to write an investigation on the moon landing s of

Gender Roles In The Battle Of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was a short lived battle with tremendously tragic amounts of bloodshed and
casualties. The physical battle, lasting the short span from July 1st to July 3rd 1863, is considered by
many, the most significant and important battle of the American Civil War. Unfortunately what many
consider the most significant battle of the American War was also indeed the bloodiest battle fought on
American soil. Confidence can be to blame for the outset of this battle and how it began. In May of
1863, the Confederate army leader, Robert E. Lee was fortunate enough in Chancellorsville, Virginia
when he and his army claimed the victory against the Army of the Potomac. Lee experienced a high of
confidence from the victory, which ultimately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Common domestic tasks that women were faced and limited to for a large time frame of history, but
specifically during The Battle of Gettysburg were ideally tasks involving the home. A Harvard study
on gender roles, specifically women s gender roles throughout history states, Men tended to work
outside the home in the fields, while women specialized in activities within the home. This division of
labor then generated norms about the appropriate role of women in society. Societies characterized by
plough agriculture, and the resulting gender based division of labor, developed the belief that the
natural place for women is within the home. Because women were limited to the home and family,
society had tunnel vision as to what women were capable of. The capability of a women was
underestimated because of societal standards at the time, but the argument of women physically being
smaller and not as strong as men was also a reason as to why women were not allowed near a
battlefield. Some women did not accept this role they were so strictly given. When roles are applied to
societal members, rebellion is to be expected, especially when roles are not fitting to every single

Analysis Of The Film The Basement Of The Grand Cafe Des...
Cinematograph story began on December 28, 1895 in the basement of the Grand Cafe des Capucines
Boulevard in Paris. The creators of this invention were Gustav and Antoine Lumiere. The film uses the
illusion of the human eye, the reading sequence in rapid succession, still images, in which subjects
slightly change shape and position, as a single image showing the change in location or shape of these
objects. In the same time Freud started his new movement in psychology by publication Studies in
hysteria . The film is a kind of delusion hung on between the real world and the illusion just like a
dream. Therefore, this form of artistic expression has been linked immediately with psychoanalysis.
Cinema and psychoanalysis had a huge influence on the development of perception and view of the
contemporary artistic expression, science and technology. Through close to human awareness as its
recipient and participant featured content of these two types of expression of human emotions merged
towards the end of the nineteenth century. Lou Andreas Salome wrote The movies really play a role of
no small significance for us at February 1913, he also added and this is not the first time I have
thought about this fact (Andreas Salome 1987: 101). Metz in his book, which he titled In the social

Multitasking Affects Student Success
Multitasking In the Internet Age: How Multitasking Affects Student Success
The growth and subsequent expansion of communication technology have resulted to a tendency of
doing more than one activity at a time creating a generation of students who think that they are using
more time in effective ways through the indulgence into more than one tasks at the same time or
simultaneously. Multitasking is used to refer to the concurrent procession of more than one tasks
(preferably more than two) through a process of switching contexts. However, researcher in the
neurosurgeon field have come with contrasting findings into how multitasking in class impacts on the
performance of students (Gasser, Urs, Palfrey, 2009). Majority of these findings have ... Show more

Imagining the scenario of a student who is chatting during a lecture implies that the brain
concentrating in the lecture is 10 points less than their normal IQ. This is actually a case of a
misplaced priority in the side of the student making them gain even less from both activities.
David Silverman (2010) in his article In Defense of Multitasking , offers a number of positives from
the practice of multitasking. He begins by mentioning that it cannot be denied that concentrating on a
single task often produces high quality in that particular task. He mentions that multitasking makes all
the tasks to slow down but argues that some individuals can actually multitask and if they can then the
better because they deliver more than one result in significantly almost the same time that they would

Rap Music Video
ANALYSIS
Anaconda can be identified as a pop music video and has characteristics of rap, and hip hop. This can
be ascertained by analysing the music video in detail.
Mise en scene of the music video looks at the props, costumes, hair and makeup, location, colour and
lighting. These elements will determine the type of music video.
Lighting and colour
The lighting in a music video can create different emotions and views and allows the audience to be
able to identify the type of genre, for expel, rock music videos lighting tend to be dark and gloomy,
while pop music videos are usually well light, bright and vibrant. Lighting is important as it sets the

The costume is also important because it has an influence on what is popular and mainstream as well
as what the audiences will dress like. Pop music videos, the artists are clothed in mainstream,
fashionable clothes or clothing labels. The artists in pop music videos usually wear what is popular at
the time and the target audience are usually able to relate. Costumes also depend on the artist and their
image, for example when you hear about lady gaga, you think about extravagant clothing, on the other
hand, Nicki Minaj is known for being a bit over the top in how she appears but she generally wears
mainstream popular clothing. In Anaconda this is clearly seen when Nicki Minaj is seen clothed in
Balmain and Alexandra Mcqueen which is reflective of the lyrics and the narrative of the music video
these names appeal to the viewers as they are designer names. Ncki Minaj is also seen as a Barbie doll
with long lashes, known for wearing bright colours, especially when it come to her hair, this makes

Comparing Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis...
Growth is inevitable and the most anticipated quest of man. It is a never ending quest to evolve,
fuelled by the constant hope for survival. Once natural growth halts, man s focus shifts to the growth
within. The coming of age, associates itself with this transformation from child to man, the step of
letting go of childish ways and moving on to more mature things. The need for such a dramatic
transformation is questioned by Miguel de Cervantes and Lewis Carroll in their texts, Don Quixote
and Alice s Adventures in Wonderland. While the texts follow two contrasting characters, they are
brought together by the theme of fantasy. Cervantes Don Quixote is an old gentleman of noble lineage

you be in your right mind? This irony is used by Cervantes to introduce the reader to the issue of
perspective. In this world there are two paradigms which are followed: one is to see the world through
the fantastical and idealistic madness of Quixote, and the other is to view it through the realism
adopted by the other characters of the text. Quixote s madness creates a world where everything is
taken at face value, not allowing the idea of deception to exist. When the issue of deception arises, he
formulates alternate explanations which are in keeping with his perspective, stating that ...everything
that happens in this place is brought about by enchantment. The alternate view which is held by most

friars mules were dromedaries and those flock of sheep were enemy armies . The hyperbolic images in
Sancho s sarcasm give the reader an insight into the sheer vastness of Quixote s generalisation of his
belief. It is Quixote s differing school of thought which Cervantes uses to establish his alienation from
the sanity of the constructed world. Contrastingly, In Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Alice is the
voice of sanity in the phantasmagorical setting of Wonderland. However, this also

Joint Interview Pros And Cons Of Being Childless
Introduction to Results The recruiting phase of the study proved to be quite challenging. Initially the
researcher recruited couples that were childless. As a result, there was reluctance in terms of
participants coming forward to take part in the study. The first couple, who, participated in the study
consisted of a wife who wanted to share her story and a husband who supported her. After completing
the individual interviews, the couple declined to participate in the joint interview. The couple
struggled with being childless and although they found ways to compensate via careers, education and
caretaking of others, the disappointment with being unable to parent was profound. The wife
expressed such strong emotions and shared that discussing her infertility was a deep and powerful
experience for her. Through this interview, the researcher began to understand the emotional intensity

Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston Essay
In her short story Sweat , Zora Neale Hurston details the troubled lives of a married African American
couple in the deep south. Born and raised in Florida herself, Huston had an excellent perspective on
the culture of that time and area. She no doubt saw the situations and heard the strong dialect that she
presents in the short story, in which Sykes constantly beats and demeans his wife Delia, who keeps her
retorts minimal as to not provoke him further. Sykes is openly dating another woman, yet Delia takes
no action, instead focusing on her work and religion. Delia retains her indifference when Sykes is in a
dire situation, allowing him to suffer just as she had. Though her actions may seem justified, they
present a major irony when considering her devoutness to religion. Delia s refusal to modify her calm
lifestyle despite Sykes s constant torment reflects her cultural and religious backgrounds and is
influenced by Hurston s own experiences. The culture that Zora Neale Hurston grew up around gave
her insight into the setting and culture that Sweat explores. Born in Eatonville, Florida, Hurston
remembered Eatonville as a place of great peace and happiness (Hemenway 10), though she was not
oblivious to the difficulties surrounding them. In fact, she embraced her place as an African American
woman; Hurston was quoted as saying that she was not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow

Frost At Midnight Critical Analysis
Coleridge frequently explores the relationship and interactions between humanity and nature in his
poetry. His poems, particularly his conversation poem Frost at Midnight , allows the reader into his
internal thoughts between the two groups. Coleridge shows how the thinking of the mind is mirrored
in nature and how patterns repeat to reveal universal aspects in poetry, thoughts, and nature. Coleridge
uses nature to capture the mind s movement. Frost is the means that begins the poem and is how the
structure of the poem is assembled. The poem contains organic, repeating fractal patterns with small
variations within them similar to how frost is propagated. These patterns exist throughout nature in
honeycombs, mountains, clouds, and leaves. Repetition is also seen between the speaker of the poem,
Coleridge, and his infant son, Hartley. Repetition exists here as Harley is, in some way, a replica of
Coleridge as children can be seen as versions of their parents. But Coleridge also points out how he
and his son are different as well. Coleridge wants his son to be intimately familiar with nature by
saying With tender gladness, thus to look at thee, / And think that thou shalt learn far other lore / And
in far other scenes! (lines 49 51). Coleridge is going to make sure that his son will enjoy nature and
not have the experience he had in the city. The alliteration of the Th sound in thus to look at thee, /
And think that thou (lines 49 50) also draws the reader to these

Introduction
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the highest level of management within an organization. The
CEO oversees all the lower level employees and the other senior executives such as the Chief
Financial Officer (CFO). Therefore, the CEO provides leadership to the CFO and all the other top
level executives in order, to build and implement an effective financial and strategic plan for the

Gymnopedie No 1 Analysis
When you listen to Erik Satie s Gymnopedie No. 1 you are struck with a sullen, dreamy chord
progression striking the root on the one of the measure and the 3rd, 5th, and 7th of the chord on the
2nd and 3nd of the measure with its waltz like ¾ timing. You hear this song and it almost immediately
hits you with a feeling of sadness but there is a sort of beauty to it. But why? Why is it that this song
makes you feel sad? Many people who are untrained in music will have a simple explanation such as
it s because it s slow or because it s in a minor key . While yes it is at a slow 78 bpm but anybody with
a trained ear can tell that it s in the key of D Major. So there must be more to it than just its tempo or
what key it s in. As you move further along in this endeavour of understanding music you learn that
instead of it being just one or two things that make a song happy or sad it s a combination of many
different attributes. Such as key signature, tempo, meter, chord extensions, intervals, and etc.Music in

Importance and Relevance of Cultural Stories
Cultural Stories Cultural narratives reveal aspects of their indigenous culture while at the same time
reflecting universal truths. This paper examines three stories that are germane to their native culture
while also dealing with the universal theme of individuation, the process by which one becomes aware
of oneself, distinct from other people. Each of the stories were written by authors from different
cultures: Hansel and Gretel was written by The Brother s Grimm in Germany, The Wolf and The
Lamb is an Aesop s Fable from Greece, and The Jungle Book is a set of stories written by Rudyard
Kipling in England. Although The Wolf and The Lamb and The Jungle Book each feature animal
characters, they are anthropomorphized to the extent that they still incorporate the individuation
process as a prominent trope. In each of the stories, the main character undertakes the journey from
innocence to experience and must learn how to assert and defend himself in the face of danger and
adversity. Although Hansel and Gretel features two (eponymous) main characters rather than one, the

Women s Role In The Victorian Era Oppression Of Women
Victorian age female oppression is frequently blotted out from discussion. The maltreatment of
women has played a key role in society since the conception of humankind. The Victorian age,
however, is what particularly peaks my interest. The treatment of women in that era was entirely
centralized around the understanding that women were subordinate to men. With their deeply
embedded concepts of misogyny, we have thus arrived at the current roles women play in society
today. It is because of the role this era still plays in the evaluation of women, that I would choose to
teach of the Victorian Era oppression of women during Reed s Paideia education week. The
fundamental function of a woman in the 19th century was childbirth. Believing firmly in the lifelong
energy levels a human contained, women were not allowed to focus on much except childbirth.
Reproduction was their key purpose of existing. Education was minimal, due to the fact that learning
might decrease their focus on multiplying. With only the slightest of education, these women were
trapped in a cycle of child rearing. Many women went into relationships with no previous knowledge
of sex and were then thrown into situations with predetermined spouses. The terrifying experiences
these individuals were tossed into were detrimental to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bipolar depression, postpartum depression, or simply the unwillingness to bear a child frequently
required the remedy of this so called medication. The rest cure obliged the diagnosed female to stay in

constant solitude only added to their already ill mental state. This cycle of incurable craziness only

Orion Controls Case Essay
Orion Controls Case
Executive Summary
Faced with the challenge of continuing to remain the leader in industrial valve systems, Orion
Controls is required to decide whether or not to carry out product improvement redesigns. A
successful redesign will secure the company an initial level of sales of 50 or 90 units to two new
customers followed by the benefits of enjoying an innovator s reputation.
An expected profit of $262,900 resulting from a product redesign given the information available with
Orion and current commitments, the company is advised to carry out the redesign and sell to Avion
Chemicals and Kemikal. Orion can make a profit of up to $655,000 if successful in achieving
dramatic changes in its existing model SV44A 10 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Break even Analysis:
Currently, Orion produces the valve at a cost of $8,000 per unit and sells each unit for $10,000;
resulting in a 25% mark up. Orion has agreed to sell the modestly improved valve for $12,000 per unit
when the variable costs alone are $10,500; $8000 per unit manufacturing costs and $2,500 per unit
comprehensive test procedure costs. Orion has decreased its profit margin to 14% without even
considering fixed costs. If the short cut approach works, fixed costs would be $200,000, and Orion
needs to sell 133.33 units to breakeven. If the software design takes eight months, fixed cost could be
as high as $440,000 and Orion would need to sell 293.33 units to breakeven. However, with a
dramatically improved valve and fixed costs of $200,000 Orion will breakeven after selling 20 units
and with fixed costs of $440,000, Orion will breakeven at 46.3 units.
Risk Analysis:
o There is only a 10% chance the entire project will fail; therefore, Orion should take the risk in
developing the product. o Orion regularly takes calculated risks to improve profits. One of Orion s
biggest risks involves the software development. Using a short cut approach and developing the
software within three months, the software development phase of the project has a 75% chance of
being completed at a cost of $120,000. However, if they are unsuccessful, it will cost Orion three
times as much, i.e., $360,000

Hacking Lockheed Martin Coop
Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT) hacking This is a renowned USA government information technology
service provider yet it suffered a serious attack on its database that the management termed as
significant and tenacious (Daily Tech, 2011). This attack was majorly directed towards the enormous
Gaithersburg, Maryland center that is located close to the headquarters of the company in Bethesda.
The attack included the theft of customer information that would be used to manipulate the WoW
accounts. The nature of the attack was such that the hackers took advantage of the Virtual Private
Network (VPN) access system that makes it possible for clients to log in remotely through the use of
their RSA SecurID hardware tokens. These attackers are said to possess the seeds factory encoded
random keys that were used by the Lockheed s SecurID hardware fobs, they also possessed the serial
numbers and the algorithm that is used to secure the devices making it possible to hack into the system
and obtain the customer information from the system. It is the responsibility of the management to
hold secure the data and information that they hold on behalf of the clients that they host. This attack
was particularly worrying since the corporation is entrusted with highly sensitive government data and
the wealth of the American government military information which it should protect from intrusion
from external sources. There are also valuable projects for the organization that it protects like

College s Value By Eric Hoover
Hidden Benefits It has been a heavily debated topic over whether college is worth it or not. In College
s Value, college professor Eric Hoover explains his studies of college degrees and concludes that
attending college has greater benefits than we expect. Nowadays, when families think of college, they
think about the amount of financial burden instead of what they will gain from attending. In this
article, Hoover states, Yet the perceived benefits of attending college go well beyond the dollars
(Hoover 1). He writes how diplomas help receive better and higher paying jobs. Hoover is persuasive
by using statistics, interviews with undergraduates and graduates, and acknowledging the opposing
views as well as refuting them. Firstly, Hoover uses statistics to strengthen his argument. Statistics
have a way of changing a person s mind that if they see that most of the majority pick a response over
the other, they tend to lean towards the majority. In the Pew survey, 84 percent of those with degrees
said college had been a good investment: only 7 percent said it had not (Hoover 1). The survey
suggest that more people believed that college has been a good investment, which is something that
Hoover states in his argument. He included the results, but not just the positive, he included the
negative too. Secondly, Hoover interviews various ages of undergraduates and graduates. He uses
different age groups, to give the reader perspective on a younger individual s experience compared to
older individual s experiences. It shows that even the generation that started school in the 1970s
viewed a similar importance for making connections in college. The article would be lifeless if the
author interviewed all younger undergraduates and graduates, it wouldn t show the reader what the
older generation went through or thought. He builds a solid argument when he involves the older
generation. People that Hoover interviewed told different stories, but all implied that there are hidden
benefits in college. Evan Bloom, 25, talks about the power of making connections while attending
college. He talks about the out of class relationships that prepared him for his future. Bloom states, An
alumnus of his fraternity helped him

Theories And Theories Of An Observation On The Sacred Disease
Reasoning from observations has been important to scientific practice at least since the time of
Aristotle. This view is motivated by the assumption that the epistemic value of an observation report
depends upon its truth or accuracy. However, perception is imposed upon scientific thinkers by their
paradigm and theoretical commitments. Developmental ideas are consequently the result of theory and
technology ladenness of observations. Theories and technology have a corporate communication,
where technological development can generate new organizational theories and previous theories can
inspire new technologies or practices. This is evident in the medical writings of the Hippocratics,
Methodists, Erasistratus, and Aristotle.

The author does not dismiss the divine cause of a disease. It was believed that the gods and the forces
of nature were one in the same. In addition, the other presupposition was that body is related to and
affected by the environment. Consequently, the author observes that treatment was sustained by the
observation of the external signs . This leads the author to search for the physical mechanism that
occurs in the body to create the disease. In his observations, the author concludes that imbalances of
the elements in the body (like the environment) cause disease. While physical and rational
observations allow the author to properly treat a disease, the author s methods of allopathy are built
upon the theoretical presupposition that the gods have indefinite power over the human body.
Alternately, the Methodists develop a logical, simplified understanding of medicine base of the
teachings of Asclepiades and the Roman medical schools in the Hellenistic era. The Methodists hold
that the Art of Medicine consists of such observations; which they define as a sort of way, which they
name methodos, and maintain that medicine should examine those characteristics which diseases have
in common (Celsus, On Medicine, proem. 56). They conclude that medicine is no more than the
awareness of general, recurring features that manifest in a tangible way. They are not concerned with
the hidden causes of the disease, as the

Unrealistic Expectations Of Young Adolescents
When comparing this television show to other young adolescent programs this one is the most
realistic, in my opinion. But of course to keep the show entertaining for the audience they mix in
unrealistic expectations or situations they may face in real life. One example is Riley having her own
emergency credit card. The girls were wanting to sell their clothes but got conned into buying other
clothes instead. Riley simply pulled out her credit card to pay for the clothes .If a young adolescent
was watching this show they would start asking her parents for a credit card. This situation makes
young adolescents feel like they should be treated like grown ups , they want to be independent

Summary Of A Sick Day For Amos Mcgee

ENGL 3401 002

A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead A Sick Day for Amos McGee is about a friendly
zookeeper, who always goes to the zoo, on the number five bus every day to make time for his friends,
which are the elephant, the tortoise, the penguin, the rhinoceros, and the owl. He plays chess with the
elephant, runs races with the tortoise, sits with the penguin, always gives his handkerchief to the
rhinoceros, and reads to the owl. Then, one day the zookeeper gets sick and he is not able to go to the
zoo to his friends. So, his friends left the zoo on the number five bus and visited his best friend at
home to make him feel better. A Sick day for Amos McGee won the Caldecott Medal in 2011 for the
illustrations that were done by Erin E. Stead, who is the wife of the author, Philip C. Stead. She made
a speech on her winning, saying A picture book allows a child ownership of art even if it s just for the
two weeks they check it out of the library. That book is theirs. I m not sure any other art for replicates
that feeling. She is right, every picture book that a person picks up, buys, or checks out is a piece of art
because all picture book illustrations are different and unique.
Illustrations in pictures are meant to make the use of the book for entertainment. The illustrations that
Erin C. Stead uses in her all of her books are woodblock or also known as woodcut printing and then
she draws on the top of the prints in pencil to finish the illustration. This type of illustration was used
in A Sick Day for Amos McGee. Woodblock printing is a technique that is used to print text, images or
patterns. In an interview talking about the illustrations in her and her husband s book, with MacMillan
Children s on YouTube, the colors that are in the book are stamped onto the page by a piece of wood.
She carves each piece of wood into each of the animals that are in the book. After she does that, she
rolls the paint onto the piece of wood and presses it to the paper. The colors that the illustrator s use
was blue, yellow, green, gray/black, orange, red, brown, and white. Red, yellow, and oranges, are
colors used to make the book suggest it has warmth, cheerfulness,

The Battle Over The Marianas
America continued to push more airmen into the Pacific, and Japan could not keep up with America s
airpower. The battle over the Marianas demonstrated the true destructive force of American air power
to the Japanese, and American planes were also able to destroy a lot of Japanese ships during that
battle. The Japanese faced an uphill battle if they wanted to challenge American pilots in the air.
One of the most important part of the United States air power and superiority was their bombers and
bombing missions. American bombers ranged from all different types of planes and the missions
varied as well. Whether it was trying to destroy important factories in Germany, or destroying
Japanese ships in the Pacific, America was using bombers. Even with all of the successful bombing
missions, it was still costly, especially over Europe and Germany. Typically, American bombers
suffered the most losses when they had to fly out of the range of fighter escorts when going on deep
bombing missions. As American airplane technology was upgraded, American fighters were able to
escort the bombers deeper into enemy territory. Also, the American pilots were able to get the best of
the Luftwaffe because of some mistakes made by German pilots. The German pilots were ordered to
avoid Allied fighters and concentrate their attack on Allied bombers...Allied fighters were allowed to
take the offensive to pursue and destroy enemy fighters rather than to provide position defense.

Why Is The Fall Of Democracy In Aziile And Brazil
Why is the economy of Brazil extremely unstable when compared to that of Chile, even though the
two countries had very similar transitions to democracy? I will also examine whether there was a
drastic change in the economic policies of the government before and after democratization. Chile and
Brazil faced struggles while shifting from a dictatorship to a democracy. They faced a host of social
and economic issues, including corruption, inflation and internal political dispute, but Chile emerged
as the region s economic success story. Both of these countries are working towards a free market

Once wealthy, the population would always choose a democracy over a dictatorship. In fact, the
authors find the survival of a democracy is easy to predict based on the economic development of the
country. As I will further demonstrate, economic development and democracy do not have a causal
relationship. Economic stability is determined by the confidence of the majority population in the
institutions established by the government. The economic and legal framework put in place should
ensures strong property rights and provide credibility for people to invest in long term projects.
Institutions are relevant only if they impose constraints to the behavior of actors. They should
diminish: i) the discretion of the government in the administration and implementation of policy
objectives; and/or ii) the ability of the government to undertake unilateral changes in policies. These
conditions are similar to those stated by Levy and Spiller (1994) as the mechanisms that provide
credibility and effectiveness to a generic regulatory framework. Those who have the utmost
confidence in public institutions prefer flexibility as they believe they will pursue economic policies
that are beneficial for the majority population at any given time. However, the politician who actually
makes these policies prioritises their self preservation and maximises their own welfare function. The
transition to democracy in Brazil occurred in the 1970s. The regime change promised Brazil political

The Historical and Colonial Context of Brian Friel s Translations
Regarded by many as Brian Friel s theatrical masterpiece, Seamus Deane described Translations as a
sequence of events in history which are transformed by his writing into a parable of events in the
present day (Introduction 22). The play was first produced in Derry in 1980. It was the first production
by Field Day, a cultural arts group founded by Friel and the actor Stephen Rea, and associated with
Deane, Seamus Heaney and Tom Paulin.
As Deane asserts, the play is in many respects an intelligent and enlightening metaphor for the
situation in Northern Ireland. The aims of raising cultural awareness and dispelling socio political
apathy in the North were central to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This culminated in the Rebellion of 1798, lead by Wolfe Tone and the Society of United Irishmen, in
which Hugh and Jimmy participated: The road to Sligo. A spring morning. 1798. Going into battle
(445). But, as these characters soon discovered, the rebellion failed resulting in large executions and
the passing of the Act of Union in 1800. This piece of legislation, effective from 1 January 1801,
brought Ireland under the direct rule of the British Crown.
1823 saw the rise of Daniel O Connell (the only real person mentioned in the play), a disillusioned
veteran of 1798 who founded the Catholic Association. O Connell campaigned for better civil rights
and social conditions for the Irish people, hence Maire reporting that he said We should all be learning
to speak English (399). O Connell believed that it was necessary to use the English language in order
to allow Ireland to progress in a quickly modernising Western world. In 1829, due to his efforts in
Parliament, the Catholic Emancipation Act came into force overturning the penal laws.
It was at this juncture, when the play takes place, that Britain began to make deeper inroads to Irish
society and culture. An attempt to colonise the mind and the people as opposed to conquering land

Robert Frost develops a tone is his poem by expressing the way he thinks he sees vs what actually

(Frost, 19) he describes how girls that bend their knees and put there hands on them and pull their hair

how he is reminiscing about his childhood memories. For example , in (Frost, 3) he states, I like to
think some boy s been swinging them like if it was him. Frost talks about imagination and real life

People cannot control the community they are born into, but through strength and determination,
certain individuals can escape their community and find a place they belong in life. Author of A Small

economic difficulties and fought for successful careers as writers and professors during adulthood.
The values, symbols, ideas, experiences, and even places that surrounded both Kincaid and Eribon in

If it was not for his homosexuality, however, he would not have realized his shame for his

Paris, he found himself shut out of his new community through the means of his social class. Eribon
said, ...once I had arrived in Paris and started meeting people from such different class backgrounds I
would often find myself lying to them about my class origins, or feeling embarrassed when admitting
my background in front of them... (Eribon 25) He finally lived his life openly as a gay man, but his
background of coming from a lower social class kept him from feeling as though he belonged. The

The Fact Of Blackness By Frantz Fanon
Frantz Fanon s The Fact of Blackness, a chapter from Black Skin, White Masks describes the anxiety
felt while held in the gaze of the colonizer. A reading of Judith Butler s Gender Trouble in conjunction
with Fanon s work raises questions and possible strategies on how to reject neocolonialism and
contemporary white supremacy. Fanon s idea of blackness is performative but not for the gain of the
black man, rather for the white man. Butler suggests that regaining control of the black man s fate
comes from interpellation, the act, of interrupting the white man s claims or ideas, or rather their
misconceptions of the black man. A way of disregarding the white man s claims is a form of rejecting
that normativity, similar to Butler s analysis of drag where one rejects normativity altogether. The
black man s lack of interpellation enhances the white man s performativity furthering white
supremacy; a way of rejecting neocolonialism that disregards societal norms.
Performative utterances do not describe but perform the action they designate (Culler 96), and the
repetitive assertions from the white man placed upon the black man results in him being inferior. The

playing a passive role.

Social networking is the process of communicating and sharing information with others within online
services based on cloud computing technologies. Nowadays, there are more than 200 social networks
[8], not including social networks, which created internally by organizations to serve their employees,
students, scientists, or members.
Nowadays, people has the opportunity to communicate and sharing information through various
applications and services: social networking sites(SNS), wikis, blogs and microblogging services,
News boards, rating platforms, newsfeeds, video platforms. These services and platforms go far
beyond the old text based web pages. As it offers a variety of opportunities for people [9].
In addition, participating in these networks requires two steps. The first one is to sign up for your own
account. The second step is to create your profile and fill it with your personal information, interests,
hobbies, work history, and educational background. This will help you find people with common
experiences or histories.

Capri Sun Ad Essay Example
Before I analyze my ad, let me give you a quick rundown. In the ad, there is an image of a girl aged 9
12 dancing with an older 50 or so woman. They are supposedly grandma and granddaughter. The
photo is candid and neither are looking into the camera. To the right is the following text, Release
Your Inner Child With Capri Sun Organic. Below that the smaller text reads, New Capri Sun Organic
Healthier, Tastier, and Better Than Ever. Now Containing One Serving of Fruit. This text is wrapped
around a pouch of Capri Sun Organic. Below this, in the even smaller text, there is a clarification that
reads, Each pouch provides ½ cup of fruit which is one serving of fruit according to the U.S. Dietary
Guidelines. At the top of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lastly, there s pathos. Pathos appeals to emotion. Most of this ad is in an attempt to create a certain
mood. First of all, both the models in the ad are happy supposedly because of Capri Sun Organic.
Also, the slogan Unleash Your Inner Child, is an illusion to happier and less stressful times when all
we were doing was having fun. All the allusions to health also make the consumer feel good about
their choice to drink the product. Plus, if people feel good about the product they re more likely to buy
it. In short, everything in this ad is used to create an association between Capri Sun Organic and health
and happiness.
The first advertising technique use is transfer. Transfer is everywhere from the smiling faces of the
models to the use of words like, Organic, Healthier, Tastier, Better, and New. All these words have
positive connotations and images associated with them, which helps give consumers a positive
outlook on the product. Another technique used is weasel words. New Capri Sun Organic Healthier,
Tastier, and Better Than Ever, is misleading. For one it s subjective. While someone may think it s
healthier or tastier, another person may disagree. Also, there is no proof that it is actually tastier or
healthier. Another technique used is facts and figures. Facts and figures can be seen in the 1 serving of

In Vitro Fertilization Research Papers
Human reproduction is as ancient a topic as any on the plant, and has been around since time began.
Childlessness has plagued mankind for years, it has risen from 1 in 10 (1970) couples were childless
to 1 in 5 (2010) as reported by the Pew Research Center. Adoption was once the only answer for a
childless couple but with methods such as artificial insemination and other fertility treatments, which
the scientific community has developed a couple now has more options to choose from. Artificial
insemination was first used in 1884, and impregnating a woman through what is known as artificial
insemination, was first used in 1884 (The Medical World: 163 164). Fertility treatments continued to
be developed. In 1906 Surgeon Robert Tuttle Morris witnessed the only successful ovarian
transplantation from healthy women to infertile women. In vitro fertilization (IVF) produced the world
s first test tube baby born on July 25, 1978 (The Medical World:, pg. 223). This procedure is done by
removing the egg(s) from a woman and placing them with sperm and a fluid medium to fertilize in a
laboratory 2 6 days then transferred to a woman s uterus to establish a successful pregnancy. In 2010,
the physiologist, Robert G. Edwards, who developed the IVF treatment, was awarded the Nobel Prize
in Physiology or Medicine. Concerns about the possibility of women being used as baby factories was
raised by Pope John Paul but He also refused to condemn the parents of the child (Prospettive nel

NFL Leadership Case Study
The league had a culture that looked the other way when it came to players improprieties. There was
history of giving personal conduct violators a mere slap on wrist. According to the San Diego Union
Tribune, of the 32 teams that make up the NFL, 21 employed players who had domestic or sexual
violence charges last year. Since 200, more than 700 NFL players found themselves arrested. The NFL
s responses were either a brief suspension or no suspension at all. Those players who the NFL released
from contracts were benchwarmers who most likely had no impact on the team winning. The ostrich
manager syndrome was present. The league did not accept blame but rather made domestic violence a
societal issue, and therefore, not their problem. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beau Buckley (2001) argue that when there is a lack of accountability in an organization s leadership,
there is an antecedent of unethical behavior within the organization (as cited in Hoogervorst De
Cremer, 2010). The Ivey Business Journal states Without Accountability leaders don t commit to, or
own, the decisions they make, and cannot get others to do so. They blame others for poor outcomes
and in doing so create a culture of fear and disengagement. People stop caring, with potentially
disastrous consequences (Crossan Seijts, 2012). Initially the league offered no solutions that caused a
loss of credibility. Following the arrest of Ray Rice, the Baltimore Ravens team owner stated I ve been
on record of saying my definition of character is repeating offenses. If we re all one strike and you re
out, then we re all in trouble. It s how you respond to adversity. (Mink, 2014) . It was not until a video
emerged that the NFL decided to mandate discipline, albeit weak discipline. The league suspended
Rice for two games. After public outcry, the league went in the opposite direction. This showed
inconsistency in leadership, which can cause inconsistencies in team members. If leaders are
consistent in what they pay attention to, measure, and control, employees receive clear signals about
what is important in the organization. If, however, leaders are

  • 2. The Anxiety Of Lithium Chloride Causes Mild Illness Introduction Animals can be conditioned to display or not display a variety of behaviors and emotions, including taste preference. This form of conditioning has even been successfully done in humans by using rotation induced motion sickness after consuming either a familiar or unfamiliar flavored beverage to create a distaste for the beverage (especially the unfamiliar flavored one) (Arwas, Rolnick, Lubow, 1989). A very common way to teach rats to dislike a certain taste is to give them injection(s) of lithium chloride (LiCl) directly after consuming a taste stimulus. The lithium chloride causes mild illness, which the rats connect to the taste stimulus, essentially because they believe the food/drink they consumed caused the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For best results, LiCl should be measured as an absolute quantity, not as a volume or concentration (Nachman Ashe 1973). These studies (among others) show that LiCl is an effective unconditioned stimulus for taste aversion when administered in correct dosages. Though many studies have observed the effects of taste aversion, fewer studies have focused on the influence of feeding on this conditioned aversion. In essence, conditioning is a form of learning, and learning requires memory. One study used the pond snail Lymnaea to show that food deprivation lowers blood glucose levels and levels of insulin circulating; therefore, it decreases the animal s ability to remember the pairing of taste stimulus and the noxious stimulus (Mita Koichi 2014). This study manipulates the preference for sucrose by administering lithium chloride (LiCl) to the rats after consumption of sucrose. The researchers sought to determine whether rats given access to free feeding would display more or less taste aversion than rats who were deprived of food after the LiCl injection. Methods Materials This study used eight adult male Long Evans rats of average size. Rats were housed separately, each in his own cage on a nocturnal light dark cycle (lights off at 7:00 AM, lights on at 7:00 PM). Each rat was given 1 hour of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The use of images in early Christianity played an important role especially in spreading the religion .Most of the target converts were the Greco Romans who had the culture of art from the beginning . The influence that Greco Roman culture had on the converts continued . The converts continued to practice burial cultures such as use of catacombs to bury the dead . • 4. The Social Factors Of Public Interest In Public... Public interest refers to the social factors or influence decision making by administrators in public administration. Public interest in public administration falls in four broad categories. Firstly is the perfectionist point of view. Under this, public interest is viewed from the point of excellence promotion in social activities. According to this view, public resources should be spent in a manner that most of the society members benefit fully from. Herring, E. P. (1936). Public administration and the public interest. Secondly is the intuitionist category. Under this category in case of conflicting situations, the administration chooses an option by intuition. This is to say that an organization chooses an intuitionist solution that seems the right course of action to be undertaken in given circumstances. Herring, E. P. (1936). Public administration and the public interest. Another on is derived from the theory of justice. This is as pronounced by the philosopher John Rawls. He suggests that two basic principles of justice to be followed in testing public interest n public administration . Actually, one of this is that every individual ought to have equal right to the most extensive basic liberty that is compatible with another liberty for others. Finally, is the utilitarianism category. According to this particular category public interest is served when a given public policy makes one a little better off even though it may make some individuals somehow worse. In public ... Brain plasticity is an area with a substantial amount of research. Brain plasticity is the brains ability to change and reorganize the components of it s structures and mechanism (Mikadze, 2014). This is an extraordinary ability that the brain has. It is even more amazing to consider how the brain does this after brain damage in stroke patients. • 6. My Passion For Reading My passion for reading is an aspect of me that has never failed to go unnoticed it is hardly a surprise for those around me to see a book in my hand wherever I go, absorbed by a world that was not invented by me. As a result of this, I was recognised within school as my picture was placed on the wall in the English Department praising how much I read. As a child I wanted to become an author so the ability to enter somebody s thoughts through words on a page has always filled me with a genuine excitement. There is no doubt that an English degree at University is for me, I want to continue my love for the subject in depth and take this further to become a Secondary Teacher of English. Through studying English at University I will be able to study modules that truly fascinate me and encourage me to read books more imaginatively and critically. Recently in the news it has been said that due to Brexit there is the possibility that a new language could be forming Euro English. Developments in the English language never fail to intrigue me as teaching English at a secondary school is the career I am working towards and this ultimately changes the future of teaching. At A level I study English Literature, Psychology and Biology all of which are essay based. Essay based subjects are beneficial to me as this is how I am most comfortable working. • 7. Gender Roles In The Battle Of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg was a short lived battle with tremendously tragic amounts of bloodshed and casualties. The physical battle, lasting the short span from July 1st to July 3rd 1863, is considered by many, the most significant and important battle of the American Civil War. Unfortunately what many consider the most significant battle of the American War was also indeed the bloodiest battle fought on American soil. Confidence can be to blame for the outset of this battle and how it began. In May of 1863, the Confederate army leader, Robert E. Lee was fortunate enough in Chancellorsville, Virginia when he and his army claimed the victory against the Army of the Potomac. Lee experienced a high of confidence from the victory, which ultimately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Common domestic tasks that women were faced and limited to for a large time frame of history, but specifically during The Battle of Gettysburg were ideally tasks involving the home. A Harvard study on gender roles, specifically women s gender roles throughout history states, Men tended to work outside the home in the fields, while women specialized in activities within the home. This division of labor then generated norms about the appropriate role of women in society. Societies characterized by plough agriculture, and the resulting gender based division of labor, developed the belief that the natural place for women is within the home. Because women were limited to the home and family, society had tunnel vision as to what women were capable of. The capability of a women was underestimated because of societal standards at the time, but the argument of women physically being smaller and not as strong as men was also a reason as to why women were not allowed near a battlefield. Some women did not accept this role they were so strictly given. When roles are applied to societal members, rebellion is to be expected, especially when roles are not fitting to every single ... • 8. Analysis Of The Film The Basement Of The Grand Cafe Des... Cinematograph story began on December 28, 1895 in the basement of the Grand Cafe des Capucines Boulevard in Paris. The creators of this invention were Gustav and Antoine Lumiere. The film uses the illusion of the human eye, the reading sequence in rapid succession, still images, in which subjects slightly change shape and position, as a single image showing the change in location or shape of these objects. In the same time Freud started his new movement in psychology by publication Studies in hysteria . The film is a kind of delusion hung on between the real world and the illusion just like a dream. Therefore, this form of artistic expression has been linked immediately with psychoanalysis. Cinema and psychoanalysis had a huge influence on the development of perception and view of the contemporary artistic expression, science and technology. Through close to human awareness as its recipient and participant featured content of these two types of expression of human emotions merged towards the end of the nineteenth century. Multitasking Affects Student Success Multitasking In the Internet Age: How Multitasking Affects Student Success The growth and subsequent expansion of communication technology have resulted to a tendency of doing more than one activity at a time creating a generation of students who think that they are using more time in effective ways through the indulgence into more than one tasks at the same time or simultaneously. Multitasking is used to refer to the concurrent procession of more than one tasks (preferably more than two) through a process of switching contexts. He begins by mentioning that it cannot be denied that concentrating on a single task often produces high quality in that particular task. It is a never ending quest to evolve, fuelled by the constant hope for survival. Once natural growth halts, man s focus shifts to the growth within. The coming of age, associates itself with this transformation from child to man, the step of letting go of childish ways and moving on to more mature things. The need for such a dramatic transformation is questioned by Miguel de Cervantes and Lewis Carroll in their texts, Don Quixote and Alice s Adventures in Wonderland. • 14. Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston Essay In her short story Sweat , Zora Neale Hurston details the troubled lives of a married African American couple in the deep south. Born and raised in Florida herself, Huston had an excellent perspective on the culture of that time and area. She no doubt saw the situations and heard the strong dialect that she presents in the short story, in which Sykes constantly beats and demeans his wife Delia, who keeps her retorts minimal as to not provoke him further. Sykes is openly dating another woman, yet Delia takes no action, instead focusing on her work and religion. Delia retains her indifference when Sykes is in a dire situation, allowing him to suffer just as she had. Though her actions may seem justified, they present a major irony when considering her devoutness to religion. Delia s refusal to modify her calm lifestyle despite Sykes s constant torment reflects her cultural and religious backgrounds and is influenced by Hurston s own experiences. The culture that Zora Neale Hurston grew up around gave her insight into the setting and culture that Sweat explores. Born in Eatonville, Florida, Hurston remembered Eatonville as a place of great peace and happiness (Hemenway 10), though she was not oblivious to the difficulties surrounding them. In fact, she embraced her place as an African American woman; Hurston was quoted as saying that she was not tragically colored. • 16. Frost At Midnight Critical Analysis Coleridge frequently explores the relationship and interactions between humanity and nature in his poetry. His poems, particularly his conversation poem Frost at Midnight , allows the reader into his internal thoughts between the two groups. Coleridge shows how the thinking of the mind is mirrored in nature and how patterns repeat to reveal universal aspects in poetry, thoughts, and nature. Coleridge uses nature to capture the mind s movement. Frost is the means that begins the poem and is how the structure of the poem is assembled. The poem contains organic, repeating fractal patterns with small variations within them similar to how frost is propagated. These patterns exist throughout nature in honeycombs, mountains, clouds, and leaves. Repetition is also seen between the speaker of the poem, Coleridge, and his infant son, Hartley. Repetition exists here as Harley is, in some way, a replica of Coleridge as children can be seen as versions of their parents. But Coleridge also points out how he and his son are different as well. Coleridge wants his son to be intimately familiar with nature by saying With tender gladness, thus to look at thee, / And think that thou shalt learn far other lore / And in far other scenes! (lines 49 51). Coleridge is going to make sure that his son will enjoy nature and not have the experience he had in the city. • 23. Importance and Relevance of Cultural Stories Cultural Stories Cultural narratives reveal aspects of their indigenous culture while at the same time reflecting universal truths. This paper examines three stories that are germane to their native culture while also dealing with the universal theme of individuation, the process by which one becomes aware of oneself, distinct from other people. Each of the stories were written by authors from different cultures: Hansel and Gretel was written by The Brother s Grimm in Germany, The Wolf and The Lamb is an Aesop s Fable from Greece, and The Jungle Book is a set of stories written by Rudyard Kipling in England. Although The Wolf and The Lamb and The Jungle Book each feature animal characters, they are anthropomorphized to the extent that they still incorporate the individuation process as a prominent trope. In each of the stories, the main character undertakes the journey from innocence to experience and must learn how to assert and defend himself in the face of danger and adversity. Although Hansel and Gretel features two (eponymous) main characters rather than one, the story still addresses the need for children to undertake the process of individuation and fend for themselves rather than relying on one s elders. At the beginning of the story, Hansel and Gretel are na 誰ve; they rely on their parents, neither of whom can adequately care for them (they are cold and underfed), yet the two children are also unable to adequately care for themselves. The maltreatment of women has played a key role in society since the conception of humankind. The Victorian age, however, is what particularly peaks my interest. The treatment of women in that era was entirely centralized around the understanding that women were subordinate to men. With their deeply embedded concepts of misogyny, we have thus arrived at the current roles women play in society today. It is because of the role this era still plays in the evaluation of women, that I would choose to teach of the Victorian Era oppression of women during Reed s Paideia education week. The fundamental function of a woman in the 19th century was childbirth. Believing firmly in the lifelong energy levels a human contained, women were not allowed to focus on much except childbirth. Reproduction was their key purpose of existing. Education was minimal, due to the fact that learning might decrease their focus on multiplying. • 27. College s Value By Eric Hoover Hidden Benefits It has been a heavily debated topic over whether college is worth it or not. In College s Value, college professor Eric Hoover explains his studies of college degrees and concludes that attending college has greater benefits than we expect. Nowadays, when families think of college, they think about the amount of financial burden instead of what they will gain from attending. In this article, Hoover states, Yet the perceived benefits of attending college go well beyond the dollars (Hoover 1). He writes how diplomas help receive better and higher paying jobs. Hoover is persuasive by using statistics, interviews with undergraduates and graduates, and acknowledging the opposing views as well as refuting them. Firstly, Hoover uses statistics to strengthen his argument. Statistics have a way of changing a person s mind that if they see that most of the majority pick a response over the other, they tend to lean towards the majority. In the Pew survey, 84 percent of those with degrees said college had been a good investment: only 7 percent said it had not (Hoover 1). The survey suggest that more people believed that college has been a good investment, which is something that Hoover states in his argument. He included the results, but not just the positive, he included the negative too. Secondly, Hoover interviews various ages of undergraduates and graduates. He uses different age groups, to give the reader perspective on a younger individual s experience compared to older individual s experiences. It shows that even the generation that started school in the 1970s viewed a similar importance for making connections in college. The article would be lifeless if the author interviewed all younger undergraduates and graduates, it wouldn t show the reader what the older generation went through or thought. He builds a solid argument when he involves the older generation. People that Hoover interviewed told different stories, but all implied that there are hidden benefits in college. Evan Bloom, 25, talks about the power of making connections while attending college. He talks about the out of class relationships that prepared him for his future. Developmental ideas are consequently the result of theory and technology ladenness of observations. A Sick day for Amos McGee won the Caldecott Medal in 2011 for the illustrations that were done by Erin E. Stead, who is the wife of the author, Philip C. Stead. She made a speech on her winning, saying A picture book allows a child ownership of art even if it s just for the two weeks they check it out of the library. That book is theirs. I m not sure any other art for replicates that feeling. She is right, every picture book that a person picks up, buys, or checks out is a piece of art because all picture book illustrations are different and unique. Illustrations in pictures are meant to make the use of the book for entertainment. The illustrations that Erin C. Stead uses in her all of her books are woodblock or also known as woodcut printing and then she draws on the top of the prints in pencil to finish the illustration. This type of illustration was used in A Sick Day for Amos McGee. Woodblock printing is a technique that is used to print text, images or patterns. In an interview talking about the illustrations in her and her husband s book, with MacMillan Children s on YouTube, the colors that are in the book are stamped onto the page by a piece of wood. She carves each piece of wood into each of the animals that are in the book. After she does that, she rolls the paint onto the piece of wood and presses it to the paper. The battle over the Marianas demonstrated the true destructive force of American air power to the Japanese, and American planes were also able to destroy a lot of Japanese ships during that battle. The Japanese faced an uphill battle if they wanted to challenge American pilots in the air. One of the most important part of the United States air power and superiority was their bombers and bombing missions. American bombers ranged from all different types of planes and the missions varied as well. Whether it was trying to destroy important factories in Germany, or destroying Japanese ships in the Pacific, America was using bombers. Even with all of the successful bombing missions, it was still costly, especially over Europe and Germany. Typically, American bombers suffered the most losses when they had to fly out of the range of fighter escorts when going on deep bombing missions. As American airplane technology was upgraded, American fighters were able to escort the bombers deeper into enemy territory. Also, the American pilots were able to get the best of the Luftwaffe because of some mistakes made by German pilots. As I will further demonstrate, economic development and democracy do not have a causal relationship. Economic stability is determined by the confidence of the majority population in the institutions established by the government. The economic and legal framework put in place should ensures strong property rights and provide credibility for people to invest in long term projects. Institutions are relevant only if they impose constraints to the behavior of actors. They should diminish: i) the discretion of the government in the administration and implementation of policy objectives; and/or ii) the ability of the government to undertake unilateral changes in policies. These conditions are similar to those stated by Levy and Spiller (1994) as the mechanisms that provide credibility and effectiveness to a generic regulatory framework. Those who have the utmost confidence in public institutions prefer flexibility as they believe they will pursue economic policies that are beneficial for the majority population at any given time. It was the first production by Field Day, a cultural arts group founded by Friel and the actor Stephen Rea, and associated with Deane, Seamus Heaney and Tom Paulin. • 42. The Fact Of Blackness By Frantz Fanon Frantz Fanon s The Fact of Blackness, a chapter from Black Skin, White Masks describes the anxiety felt while held in the gaze of the colonizer. A reading of Judith Butler s Gender Trouble in conjunction with Fanon s work raises questions and possible strategies on how to reject neocolonialism and contemporary white supremacy. Fanon s idea of blackness is performative but not for the gain of the black man, rather for the white man. Butler suggests that regaining control of the black man s fate comes from interpellation, the act, of interrupting the white man s claims or ideas, or rather their misconceptions of the black man. A way of disregarding the white man s claims is a form of rejecting that normativity, similar to Butler s analysis of drag where one rejects normativity altogether. The black man s lack of interpellation enhances the white man s performativity furthering white supremacy; a way of rejecting neocolonialism that disregards societal norms. Performative utterances do not describe but perform the action they designate (Culler 96), and the repetitive assertions from the white man placed upon the black man results in him being inferior.
