This document discusses the use of computer simulation as an alternative to animal testing. It begins by introducing the 3Rs framework of replacement, reduction and refinement for more humane treatment of laboratory animals. Computer simulation is described as using algorithms and equations to model system behavior, as an alternative that provides advantages like reduction, refinement and replacement of animal use. Examples of computer simulation techniques are given in fields like education, biomedical research, behavioral research, and other areas like drug discovery, cell models, genetics and protein design. Limitations including biological complexity and lack of knowledge of all parameters are also noted.
