Skepticism On The Search For The Truth Of Our Knowledge
Skepticism in the Search for the Truth of Our Knowledge
How many times have you said, No way, I do not believe it! It is our natural tendency not to believe in
something that we have not seen with our own eyes or experienced it personally. There is a saying,
seeing is believing which has led us to a world full of skeptics. We want proof so we are not gullible
fools. Skepticism, or scepticism, as it was spelled back in the ancient times, was pondered by
philosophers who tried unsuccessfully to figure out the thought process and how we gain knowledge.
Philosophers gave deep thought to determine how we arrive at such true beliefs and knowledge of the
external world. Three such philosophers were Rene Descartes, David Hume and Christopher Grau.
Rene Descartes was a French philosopher in the early 1600 s; David Hume was a Scottish Philosopher
in the 1700 s, and Grau an American philosopher Professor born in 1970. The timeline s important
because philosophical views have evolved over time. All three men were from different eras, but they
each explored, argued, and addressed the topic of skepticism from their philosophical view. This
proves that they take the subject of skepticism seriously, just as we should too. There is good reason to
believe that a human s knowledge of the external world results from both a posteriori knowledge
acquired through sensory experience and a priori knowledge which is innate. Descartes, Hume, and
Grau through their personal views and skeptical

Historical And Medical Background Of Agnosia
Historical and Medical Background of Agnosia
Agnosia is a rare neurological disorder that affects one s capability to recognize people or objects
based on the affected sense (Coslett, 2007; National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke,
2014). There are three observed types of agnosia: Visual, Auditory, and Tactile (Coslett, 2007; Marotta
Behrmann 2002). Visual agnosia is the most common type because the brain devotes the most energy
and resources to visual processing than processing of any of the other senses (Coslett, 2007). Since it
is the most common, and therefore has the most research available, visual agnosia will be the primary
focus of this paper.
Sigmund Freud coined the term agnosia which means without knowledge and although the term
stands today, it is now known that those with agnosia actually have knowledge of what they are seeing
but do not have the ability to connect perception to knowledge. As Marotta and Behrmann observed in
two case studies, those with visual agnosia are able to identify and recognize object through sound,
touch or a description of function or appearance (Marotta Behrmann, 2002; Coslett, 2007), proving
that knowledge of the object is present.
Heinrich Lissauer, a German neurologist, divided visual agnosia into two subcategories: apperceptive
and associative agnosia. Apperceptive agnosia is when a perceptual representation cannot even be
derived from vision, meaning everything can be seen, the visual acuity and physical

King Alfred the Great as One of the Greatest Rulers of...
King Alfred the Great as One of the Greatest Rulers of English History King Alfred the Great can, in
many ways, be considered one of the greatest rulers of England. His defeat of the Danes, unification
of England, many successful reforms and insistence upon the restoration of ecclesiastical culture are
the result of his superior leadership and command. The epithet, The Great, attached to his name by
writers of the sixteenth century and given to no other English king is another reflection of the kind of
ruler he was.1 A twelfth century writer notes the prestige that was given to Alfred when he wrote, He
reigned for twenty and eight years; there are few such men living: for he was wise and a good ... Show

In 853 he played his first role in politics and diplomacy. At the age of four, Alfred was sent to Rome
by his father to represent him at a papal court. Even at such a young age, Alfred was taking part in the
politics of his country. At four years old Alfred took part in a legal ceremony at his father s court and
at age five he was a witness to a series of charters given to churches by his father.4 Alfred took part in
many of the political activities in his father s court. Because of Alfred s active role in the diplomacy of
his father s kingdom, he had a different education than one would expect a future king to have. He
spent his youth taking part in his father s court and hunting. Through his hunting, he learned the land
of his father s kingdom, which would become an advantage against the Viking invaders during his
reign.5 Alfred did not have a literate education as a young boy. He remained illiterate in Anglo Saxon
until his teen years and in Latin until much later in his life.6 However, his literacy made no difference
in his ability to lead a country against attack. As the fourth son of a king, it is quite an oddity that
Alfred took the throne in 871. However, with the deaths of all of his brothers, Alfred was able to lead
his kingdom to victory over the Vikings. At a battle in 878 against the Viking leader Guthrum Alfred
was able to defeat the Vikings

Nokia was founded in 1865 in Nokia Finland as a timber and paper company. One could say Nokia
from the beginning was a communication company. On the turn of the century the company started
producing rubber. It was not until the 1960s when Nokia started the electronic venture. It was only in
1987 that with their major acquisition they brought the venture into reality and entered the electronic
competition. With a rapid growth Nokia became one the leading European electronic companies. To
increase profit Nokia was divided into five business groups which Nokia Mobile Phone is one of
them. According to the case in 1990, 68% of Nokia s sales came from electronics, compared with ...

A New York Police Department
Picture a woman standing in a subway station in New York City. Her purse is slung over her shoulder
as she reads the railway map. A thief approaches her from behind and snatches the leather handle of
her purse from her grip. He dashes away as she helplessly watches him go. The woman does not call
the police or even ask passersby for help. She knows no one will come to her aid, especially not the
NYPD. Such a scenario is shocking and not a little discomforting, especially when placed in the
jurisdiction of the nationally acclaimed New York Police Department. Unfortunately, such scenes of
distress began to proliferate in late December of 2014 as the NYPD dramatically reduced the number
of arrests made for petty crimes, such as purse theft. The police used the cutback as a response to a
multitude of policy blunders from the office of Mayor de Blasio, many of which the NYPD considered
offensive and inappropriate. Although the mayor s actions doubtless deserve more scrutiny, the police
of New York City were devastatingly blind to the ethical implications of their rash decisions. By
indulging in an egocentric worldview and morally disengaging from their decisions, the NYPD gave
reign to emotion and released their wrath by endangering the population of their city. According to the
New York Times, the NYPD s disrespect for Mayor de Blasio built gradually as errors and oversights
slighting the police accumulated. The mayor s staff hired a former aid to a prominent religious figure

Paper On Dyscalculia
Introduction Each day we come into contact with numbers in many different ways and do not even
think about. For someone who has trouble with the concepts of numbers, everyday life could be
frustrating. Each year a small number of 3 to 6% of children are diagnosed with Dyscalculia also
known as Math Dyslexia (Aster Kucien, 2014). A lot of people with Dyscalculia have never been
diagnosed or do not even realize they have it. At this time there no known cause of Dyscalculia.
Numerical skills play a large role in our everyday routines, for someone who continuously has
difficulty in this area it would be easy to become really discouraged. Because it is still uncommon, it

By giving the child graph paper it can help them to keep numbers lined up and organized in order to
complete the problem easier. Having the child read the problems aloud will benefit them by hearing
the problem in another way then just seeing it on paper. Allowing the child to use a calculator on their
math work will allow them to have some success and help them build their confidence in math.
Drawing out a math problem can benefit these children also because it is another way to look at it. If
the parent or teacher can incorporate something that the child is interested in such as frogs or spiders,
then they can draw the math problem out using pictures of those. This will keep the child interested
and more willing to participate. These strategies and interventions are also ideas that can help other
students who may not have Dyscalculia because they can be used for the whole class therefore one
child does not have to feel singled out. A child with Dyscalculia does not have to feel like they are
doomed, there are many interventions that teachers and parents can learn to help them have success in
math and eventually feel comfortable with the

New Zealand Foreign Policy
Within two days, Prime Minister Peter Fraser responded with a cable that transformed the trajectory of
New Zealand s foreign policy. The cable is not published in full, however, the published extracts
reveal that Fraser emphasised the deterioration in the Pacific theatre and the fact that His Majesty s
Government... do not perhaps fully understand the point of view that is being forced by circumstances
upon the Government and peoples of New Zealand . Further, the cable speaks of an intention to
establish the closest possible relations with the US, while always having regard to New Zealand s
primary connection with the British Commonwealth. In making his position clear, Fraser proposed
that the New Zealand government send to Washington a Minister of the Crown on special mission .
The importance of this cable as a whole, particularly the final proposal, cannot be understated and is
exemplified by the regard afforded to it by historians. Wood refers to this cable as the most important
single document in the formation of New Zealand foreign policy . McIntyre speaks of this moment as
when the phase of dual dependency began . Lissington looks at this proposal as a new phase in New
Zealand s foreign policy . The reason for its remarkable significance is that it was the first time New
Zealand looked beyond Britain for a formal security alliance. It must be recognised that New Zealand
had not yet formally severed its ties with Britain, had no overseas missions outside

Dirt Bikes Comparison
Street motorcycles and dirt bikes are not created equal. There are important differences to recognize
between street motorcycles and dirt bikes. They are both two wheeled vehicles but are designed and
intended for different purposes. Although, street motorcycles and dirt bikes can seem very similar they
have some major differences that affect their riding styles. Street motorcycles and dirt bike are
designed for different environments you can tell from the differences in the build what terrain each is
made for.
Environments that street bikes and dirt bikes are made for are very contrasting. A street motorcycle is
made for smooth or mostly smooth terrain like paved roads, highways, and some gravel roads. The
terrain a dirt bike is made for is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A street motorcycle usually has a larger frame and it is heavy and metal. The frame of a dirt bike is
typically lighter and smaller because it uses mostly hard plastic with minimal metal. The street
motorcycles larger heavier frame offers more stability to the rider and the dirt bikes smaller lighter
frame offers more agility. Dirt bikes also go off jumps so a lighter frame is better. Street motorcycle
and dirt bikes are not equipped with the same suspension. The suspension on a street motorcycle is
stiffer than the suspension of a dirt bike. The suspension on a street motorcycle is limited because it is
made for a heavy bike on smooth roads not taking much impact, enough to give a smooth ride but not
enough to take the jumps that a dirt bike would. On a dirt bike, the suspension is not as stiff and is
very good at taking impact as it is made to absorb the shock of the bike going over rough trails and
jumps. The tires of street motorcycles and dirt bikes are designed for different environments. Street
motorcycles have less aggressive, slick, and wide tires. The slicker and wider tires of a street
motorcycle provide more traction and stability on the smooth pavement they are made for. Dirt bikes
have a more aggressive tire design as they are narrower and have knobs. The narrower and knobby dirt
bike tire give traction and make maneuvering through loose dirt and sand

First Transcontinental Railroad Research Paper
The first transcontinental Railroad is being called one of the best civil engineering marvels of 19th
century.
We all know that Necessity is the mother of Invention. All was started in 1849, when gold was
discovered in California. After that many people moved to California searching for new opportunities.
The overland journey through plains, mountains, rivers and deserts was extremely hard and
dangerous. Many people choose to travel by sea and go around Cape Horn at the tip of South America
for six month journey rather than go through Isthmus of Panama and risk their life with yellow fever
and other diseases. At that time, Congress also wanted to protect gold and goods which was flowing
between east and west. During that era, America had a local rail network which connected many cities
on east coast. These all necessities had played main part in producing the idea of the first
transcontinental railroad.
In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the bill and the Pacific Railroad Act became the law,
which gave the contract to the Central Pacific (CP) and the Union Pacific (UP) Companies, and

Noah Vs Gilgamesh
Various culture around the world at various times have written myths about catastrophic floods. These
myths contain different reasons and purposes behind the flood and why it was sent. Two of the most
notable and strikingly different flood accounts are Noah and the great flood found in Genesis, and the
Sumerian flood found in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The differences in these flood accounts are who
started the flood, the way these two cultures related to the divine, and blank.
The first major difference in these two tales is who initiated the flood. In the genesis account the flood
is initiated by one God, because the Jewish people where monotheistic. This notion of one god also

family will repopulate the Earth. I will not again curse the ground any more for man s sake; for the

of humanities wickedness and sinfulness. The Jews interpreted these things as the mercy and
forgiveness of God. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim receives a very different reward then Noah
did in Genesis. He touched our forehead and, standing between us, he blessed us: Previously
Utnapishtim was a human being. But now let Utnapishtim and his wife become like us, the gods!
Utnapishtim and his wife were granted immortality, but the rest of the people received nothing. This
again is reflexive of the division that existed in the Mesopotamian region where what happened to one
person or city state did not extend to the others. But the jews in their unified culture believed that God

The Strategies For Multinational Corporation
Three strategies for multinational corporation to react to disruptive innovation
Disruptive innovation(DI) impacts the world and propels society to develop marvelously, Blackberries
were replaced by smartphones, Amazon ships various things to doors, and more people download
books in an instant to Kindles instead of buying books (Gilmartin, 2015). These disruptive innovation
are challenging multinational corporations, and MNCs have to survive by reacting strategically. This
essay are composed by four parts, first part explains definition and features of disruptive innovation,
and the following part states the importance of disruptive innovation. The third part concludes all the
challenges caused by DI, including MNCs face DI in every marketplace, DI is easy to be ignored, high
cost of DI, and MNCs internal barriers of leading DI. The last part criticises and states MNCs
strategies to react to DI, including identifying DI, articulating strategies to develop DI to satisfy
mainstream, and taking advantages of subsidiaries in developing countries to leading DI.
Disruptive innovation (DI) firstly defined by Bower and Christensen(1995) as a process by which a
new product created at the bottom of a market and then relentlessly moves up market, eventually takes
hold of existing market ultimately. According to the definition, disruptive innovation is more
threatening to dominant products and companies because it causes market disturbance and eliminate

Ethical Hedonism In Robert Nozick s The Experience Machine
Robert Nozick was a modern day American philosopher, who had a large variety of philosophical
questions regarding the workings of the modern world (Feser), in 1974 Nozick finished work on his
book which would give birth to the Experience Machine . In Anarchy, State, and Utopia (Nozick
1974), Nozick created the thought experiment The Experience Machine with which he attempts to
challenge the idea of ethical hedonism (42). The Experience Machine is a thought experiment, in
which a person is given the choice of entering a machine that would stimulate pleasure into a person s
brain using a machine, and that the person could not distinguish the differences between the machine
and reality, in some variations of the experiment, once a person enters the machine, that person cannot
leave. (Nozick 1974, 42 43) According to Nozick, a person should choose not to enter the Experience
Machine, Nozick expresses that it would be unethical to enter the Experience Machine due to none of
those experiences, and the memories that come from them, being real, and that since they are all
created in a man made reality, that they should hold no value to a person (43). Nozick s notion that
one should choose not to enter the Experience Machine is correct, while it allows people to experience
anything they ever wanted, a person should not enter the Experience Machine, because it creates a
false sense of reality due to how people cannot differentiate the two, it doesn t allow people to do

The Puritans and the Pilgrims: What made the Puritans different?
Many Americans are familiar with the two groups, Puritans and Pilgrims, but most don t know the
differences between them. The Puritans began a group of people that were members of the Anglican
Church. Their goals were to rid the church of any remaining influences from Catholicism. They were
mainly English Protestants of the 16th century who wanted to follow the Calvinist model of religion
rather than the ever present Catholicism. Several Puritans lost faith in the Anglican Church and felt it
could never be completely purified from all Catholic influence; as a result they abandoned the Church
and completely separated themselves from the Anglican religion. These Puritans where referred to as
Separatists. The remaining majority of Puritans inherited the title of non separating Puritans, over time
these two groups would become increasingly hostile toward each other.
The Puritans wanted to remain a part of the English establishment, and work toward reforming the
church from within. All the while they immigrating to New England, they still held onto their English
heritage, and their main emphasis in forming a new colony was to be a biblical witness so to say, the
city on a hill . Their objective was to set a shining example ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

REDUCING FALLS IN THE ELDERLY
Reducing Falls in the Elderly by Use of Multifactorial Assessments and Management Programs
Marney Belmore
Southeast Missouri State University
A fall is defined as an unanticipated occurrence where a person happens to lie on the ground, floor or a
surface that is below them from their prior standing, lying or sitting position. In the United States,
people over the age of 65 years of age is increasing at a rapid rate due to the increase in the average
life expectancy and our baby boomers advancing in years. In fact, the U.S. Census Bureau predicts
that the quantity of people aged 65 years or older will double by the year 2030 and the people 85 years
and older will grow by 5 times by the year 2050. With the increasing average age of Americans, the
escalation of falls in the elderly will increase tremendously because of many different risk factors that
affect our elderly population. (Michael et al., 2010).
Falls are triggered by multifaceted factors with numerous dangers that include either long or short
term influencing factors. The connections between these factors may be altered by the person?s age,
ailments, illnesses, diagnoses such as Parkinson?s, stroke, diabetes mellitus and arthritis, or their
surroundings. The major fall risk factors for elderly include their advancing age, loss of muscle
strength, unsteady gait, impaired balance, incontinence of bowel or bladder, depression, cognitive
impairment, due to

The idea of women gaining the right to vote was one such of a tale. Men, and women never thought
they would see the day where women were considered equal suffragists. Until August 18, 1920 when
the nineteenth amendment was ratified into the United States Constitution, granting women the right
to vote. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony died before they could see the day where
women would become equal. Carrie Chapman Catt worked hand in hand with Susan B. Anthony, and
served as the president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Alice Paul
served as a role model for women. She worked for women s suffrage while in jail, and proved to her
opponents, that the day where women could vote would come. Though these women did not always
work together, working towards the same cause allowed them to accomplish their true dream: women
s suffrage.
July 19th, 1848 the Seneca Falls Convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York. This was the first
women s rights gathering that addressed the issues and conditions for women. Elizabeth Cady Stanton
worked on the convention, and it began a bigger suffrage movement, than ever before. Elizabeth Cady
Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony not only were two leading suffragists, but together they edited and
published, the Revolution a radical women s newspaper (Harper). Working together didn t only
improve their belief of equal suffrage, but it helped for them to grow the knowledge of the issue.
Together, they formed

10 Things I Hate About You Speech
Figuring out who you are and what you want to be is a struggle everyone goes through. 10 Things I
Hate about You is a modern interpretation of the story Taming of The Shrew By William Shakespeare.
In the play, The Taming of the Shrew and the movie, 10 things I hate about You show how societal
pressures and deception overall shape people s identities.
In both mediums, the outliers of society conform for acceptance in others. In The Taming of the
Shrew, Katherine says, Why are our bodies soft, and weak, and smooth
But that our soft conditions and our hearts should well agree with our external parts? . Throughout the
story Katherine has been this very vivacious person, but now she is showing how she finally
conformed and is now bringing that exact conformity that she used to hate onto other girls because all
she really wanted was acceptance. In 10 Things I Hate about You this same idea is scene again, but

as the circuitry to program and communicate with the micro over USB. The input and output pins of
the micro are placed in an order for easy access. On the software side, Arduino provides a number of
libraries to make programming the micro easier. The simplest is to control and read the input and

Mutual Funds Mutual Funds have become increasingly popular in the last 20 years, with the number

Mass Extinction Of Dinosaurs
The mass extinction of the Dinosaurs has been a subject of interest and dispute for many scientists
over the years. There are many different theories on what happened to them: did some planetary
destruction happen, did they die out, were they wiped out, or was it the cause of something not of this
planet. This question and this need to solve the mysteries of the world has continued to draw scientists
in for the never ending search for the answer. Scientists have worked tirelessly in an attempt to
discover the truth, and their hard work has warranted some results. In Mexico in the Turquoise waters,
scientists have discovered a crater where they believe an asteroid or comet struck earth which helped
cause one of the largest mass extinctions in the history of our planet. They call it, Chicxulub, and they
know of it as the killer of dinosaurs. They found evidence of this event first in the layers of rock in the
earth. Scientists discovered that when you look at the different layers of rock that depict the history of
our planet certain fossils just stopped showing up. The discovery was that at some point certain living
creatures on this planet simply no longer lived to create fossils. A discovery made by scientists in the
1980s showed there were large deposits of Iridium in the earth during the time all these creatures
suddenly disappeared. Iridium is not that common on this earth, but it is common on asteroids; thus
the belief of the steroid hitting earth. Scientists believe

Briefly Dallas
Dallas is one of the largest and most developed cities in the state of Texas in the United States. Dallas
is the 4th largest city in the United States because of its downtown location, and is also the city with
the world s largest airport. Dallas, the largest city after Houston and San Antonio, is also one of the top
ten cities in the United States. The city is located in the middle of a desert and is literally revived.
Dallas, a Texas state, deserves more attention with its dynamic cityscape, recent history, and colorful
life with its cowboys, though many of Turk dig into the minds of the same name phenomenon TV
series. Dallas has a place for me if I receive a chance to make a trip to Texas. The first thing to notice
is the regular city of Dallas. As far as I am concerned as a Turkish that we ought to know these about
Dallas briefly.
When we call Dallas, the famous series, especially at middle aged people, is taken at the Southfork
Ranch in J.R, Sue Ellen, Bobby and Pamela Ranch. Southfork Ranch Farm is home to events such as
weddings, meetings and meals. It can also be visited like a museum.
Dallas is famous for its cowboys. The history of cowboys is quite interesting. The ancestors of
cowboys are not Americans, but Mexicans in North America. Even if we go back further, we see that
their ancestors are from Spain to North America.

The story of Gilgamesh, the King of Uruk who is two thirds god and one third human, is a interesting

constantly going into battle and going on long adventures to find answers that will better his city. He is

Gilgamesh knows this to be true because he tells his friend Enkidu before the battle that all the glory
will be theirs if they are to defeat this mighty foe. Another example of Gilgamesh s wisdom as an
intelligent leader is how he looks to others that are older and more experienced for advice throughout
the entire story. All the way through the story Gilgamesh looks up to his mother for counseling and
advice as to what he is suppose to do in different areas of his life. A leader who is consistently seeking
advice and wisdom from those who are older and more seasoned truly makes that person an intelligent
leader, and that is exactly what Gilgamesh does. Gilgamesh, being a religious man, knows that he
could not have accomplished the things that he did on his own. Consistently he is giving thanks to
other people or to the gods for his many feats. After Gilgamesh had slain the bull from heaven he was
quick to honor and give thanks to his god Shamash. They butchered and bled the bull and then cut out
it s heart to offer as a sacrifice before Shamash. Then Gilgamesh and Enkidu retreated from the altar
itself and stood afar in deep respect as they did pray. (pg. 27) And even before he fights the bull
Gilgamesh looks to Enkidu and says, Be unrelenting and hope that God gives us the strength. (pg. 26)
Both of these quotes demonstrate that Gilgamesh knew that he could not kill the beast Humbaba on
his own, and that he respects his god and knew that

Born in 551 B.C.E., Confucius is one of the well known philosophers. He lived in Lu and held no

were compiled to form Confucianism. On the other hand, Taoism was the belief that nature is the

other words, these philosophical principles and beliefs were part of Zhou s accomplishments. Other
accomplishments include: the iron plow, the well field system, a place for 0 in mathematics, irrigation

Marketing researchers work with probabilistic models of the form: y = f(x1)..(fx2)...f(xn)...
This reflects the fact that in order for a target market share to be reached some promotion (amount
unknown) is necessary but will not be sufficient, on its own, to achieve the target. Y is a function of a
number of variables and the interactions between them. The model is further complicated by the fact
that these interactions are themselves often not understood. It is for these reasons that marketing
researchers cannot guarantee that decisions based on their information will always prove successful .
Rather the best that a competent researcher and a well designed study will be able to offer is a
reduction in the amount of uncertainty surrounding the decision.
A definition of marketing research
Green and Tull1 have defined marketing research as follows:
Marketing research is the systematic and objective search for, and analysis of, information relevant to
the identification and solution of any problem in the field of marketing.
The key words in this definition are; systematic, objective and analysis. Marketing research seeks to
set about its task in a systematic and objective fashion. This means that a detailed and carefully
designed research plan is developed in which each stage of the research

what that means for society. To understand cyber warfare it is important to understand the distinction
between a cyber attack and cyber warfare. A cyber attack is within the cyber domain with an objective

same realm) but a cyber war is a state of armed conflict politically motivated with violent means with
violence, just like with regular conflict, with the regular war itself. However, this area of cyber
warfare is not something we can measure or separate like borders of a state because it is not very
tangible and it is a fairly new topic, so we don t know the jurisdictions of it. There are so many
questions regarding how to make sense of cyber warfare and an even more confusing legal conceptual
of a cyber war to fit into the established law of war.
Since the growing number of cyberattacks, the United States created a separate command called the
Cyber Command on June 23, 2009. The secretary of defense directed the commander of the US

  • 3. Skepticism On The Search For The Truth Of Our Knowledge Skepticism in the Search for the Truth of Our Knowledge How many times have you said, No way, I do not believe it! It is our natural tendency not to believe in something that we have not seen with our own eyes or experienced it personally. There is a saying, seeing is believing which has led us to a world full of skeptics. We want proof so we are not gullible fools. Skepticism, or scepticism, as it was spelled back in the ancient times, was pondered by philosophers who tried unsuccessfully to figure out the thought process and how we gain knowledge. Philosophers gave deep thought to determine how we arrive at such true beliefs and knowledge of the external world. Three such philosophers were Rene Descartes, David Hume and Christopher Grau. Rene Descartes was a French philosopher in the early 1600 s; David Hume was a Scottish Philosopher in the 1700 s, and Grau an American philosopher Professor born in 1970. The timeline s important because philosophical views have evolved over time. All three men were from different eras, but they each explored, argued, and addressed the topic of skepticism from their philosophical view. This proves that they take the subject of skepticism seriously, just as we should too. There is good reason to believe that a human s knowledge of the external world results from both a posteriori knowledge acquired through sensory experience and a priori knowledge which is innate. Descartes, Hume, and Grau through their personal views and skeptical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Historical And Medical Background Of Agnosia Historical and Medical Background of Agnosia Agnosia is a rare neurological disorder that affects one s capability to recognize people or objects based on the affected sense (Coslett, 2007; National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2014). There are three observed types of agnosia: Visual, Auditory, and Tactile (Coslett, 2007; Marotta Behrmann 2002). Visual agnosia is the most common type because the brain devotes the most energy and resources to visual processing than processing of any of the other senses (Coslett, 2007). Since it is the most common, and therefore has the most research available, visual agnosia will be the primary focus of this paper. Sigmund Freud coined the term agnosia which means without knowledge and although the term stands today, it is now known that those with agnosia actually have knowledge of what they are seeing but do not have the ability to connect perception to knowledge. As Marotta and Behrmann observed in two case studies, those with visual agnosia are able to identify and recognize object through sound, touch or a description of function or appearance (Marotta Behrmann, 2002; Coslett, 2007), proving that knowledge of the object is present. Heinrich Lissauer, a German neurologist, divided visual agnosia into two subcategories: apperceptive and associative agnosia. Apperceptive agnosia is when a perceptual representation cannot even be derived from vision, meaning everything can be seen, the visual acuity and physical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. King Alfred the Great as One of the Greatest Rulers of... King Alfred the Great as One of the Greatest Rulers of English History King Alfred the Great can, in many ways, be considered one of the greatest rulers of England. His defeat of the Danes, unification of England, many successful reforms and insistence upon the restoration of ecclesiastical culture are the result of his superior leadership and command. The epithet, The Great, attached to his name by writers of the sixteenth century and given to no other English king is another reflection of the kind of ruler he was.1 A twelfth century writer notes the prestige that was given to Alfred when he wrote, He reigned for twenty and eight years; there are few such men living: for he was wise and a good ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 853 he played his first role in politics and diplomacy. At the age of four, Alfred was sent to Rome by his father to represent him at a papal court. Even at such a young age, Alfred was taking part in the politics of his country. At four years old Alfred took part in a legal ceremony at his father s court and at age five he was a witness to a series of charters given to churches by his father.4 Alfred took part in many of the political activities in his father s court. Because of Alfred s active role in the diplomacy of his father s kingdom, he had a different education than one would expect a future king to have. He spent his youth taking part in his father s court and hunting. Through his hunting, he learned the land of his father s kingdom, which would become an advantage against the Viking invaders during his reign.5 Alfred did not have a literate education as a young boy. He remained illiterate in Anglo Saxon until his teen years and in Latin until much later in his life.6 However, his literacy made no difference in his ability to lead a country against attack. As the fourth son of a king, it is quite an oddity that Alfred took the throne in 871. However, with the deaths of all of his brothers, Alfred was able to lead his kingdom to victory over the Vikings. At a battle in 878 against the Viking leader Guthrum Alfred was able to defeat the Vikings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. A New York Police Department Picture a woman standing in a subway station in New York City. Her purse is slung over her shoulder as she reads the railway map. A thief approaches her from behind and snatches the leather handle of her purse from her grip. He dashes away as she helplessly watches him go. The woman does not call the police or even ask passersby for help. She knows no one will come to her aid, especially not the NYPD. Such a scenario is shocking and not a little discomforting, especially when placed in the jurisdiction of the nationally acclaimed New York Police Department. Unfortunately, such scenes of distress began to proliferate in late December of 2014 as the NYPD dramatically reduced the number of arrests made for petty crimes, such as purse theft. The police used the cutback as a response to a multitude of policy blunders from the office of Mayor de Blasio, many of which the NYPD considered offensive and inappropriate. Although the mayor s actions doubtless deserve more scrutiny, the police of New York City were devastatingly blind to the ethical implications of their rash decisions. By indulging in an egocentric worldview and morally disengaging from their decisions, the NYPD gave reign to emotion and released their wrath by endangering the population of their city. According to the New York Times, the NYPD s disrespect for Mayor de Blasio built gradually as errors and oversights slighting the police accumulated. The mayor s staff hired a former aid to a prominent religious figure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. New Zealand Foreign Policy Within two days, Prime Minister Peter Fraser responded with a cable that transformed the trajectory of New Zealand s foreign policy. The cable is not published in full, however, the published extracts reveal that Fraser emphasised the deterioration in the Pacific theatre and the fact that His Majesty s Government... do not perhaps fully understand the point of view that is being forced by circumstances upon the Government and peoples of New Zealand . Further, the cable speaks of an intention to establish the closest possible relations with the US, while always having regard to New Zealand s primary connection with the British Commonwealth. In making his position clear, Fraser proposed that the New Zealand government send to Washington a Minister of the Crown on special mission . The importance of this cable as a whole, particularly the final proposal, cannot be understated and is exemplified by the regard afforded to it by historians. Wood refers to this cable as the most important single document in the formation of New Zealand foreign policy . McIntyre speaks of this moment as when the phase of dual dependency began . Lissington looks at this proposal as a new phase in New Zealand s foreign policy . The reason for its remarkable significance is that it was the first time New Zealand looked beyond Britain for a formal security alliance. Street motorcycles and dirt bike are designed for different environments you can tell from the differences in the build what terrain each is made for. The frame of a dirt bike is typically lighter and smaller because it uses mostly hard plastic with minimal metal. The street motorcycles larger heavier frame offers more stability to the rider and the dirt bikes smaller lighter frame offers more agility. Dirt bikes also go off jumps so a lighter frame is better. Street motorcycle and dirt bikes are not equipped with the same suspension. The suspension on a street motorcycle is stiffer than the suspension of a dirt bike. The suspension on a street motorcycle is limited because it is made for a heavy bike on smooth roads not taking much impact, enough to give a smooth ride but not enough to take the jumps that a dirt bike would. On a dirt bike, the suspension is not as stiff and is very good at taking impact as it is made to absorb the shock of the bike going over rough trails and jumps. The tires of street motorcycles and dirt bikes are designed for different environments. Street motorcycles have less aggressive, slick, and wide tires. The slicker and wider tires of a street motorcycle provide more traction and stability on the smooth pavement they are made for. We all know that Necessity is the mother of Invention. All was started in 1849, when gold was discovered in California. After that many people moved to California searching for new opportunities. The overland journey through plains, mountains, rivers and deserts was extremely hard and dangerous. Many people choose to travel by sea and go around Cape Horn at the tip of South America for six month journey rather than go through Isthmus of Panama and risk their life with yellow fever and other diseases. At that time, Congress also wanted to protect gold and goods which was flowing between east and west. During that era, America had a local rail network which connected many cities on east coast. These all necessities had played main part in producing the idea of the first transcontinental railroad. These myths contain different reasons and purposes behind the flood and why it was sent. Two of the most notable and strikingly different flood accounts are Noah and the great flood found in Genesis, and the Sumerian flood found in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The differences in these flood accounts are who started the flood, the way these two cultures related to the divine, and blank. The first major difference in these two tales is who initiated the flood. In the genesis account the flood is initiated by one God, because the Jewish people where monotheistic. In the Genesis account, God s reward for Noah s justness, is that he will be allowed to live, and his family will repopulate the Earth. I will not again curse the ground any more for man s sake; for the imagination of man s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more everything living, as I have done. God s reward to all of humanity is to never destroy the world again regardless of humanities wickedness and sinfulness. The Jews interpreted these things as the mercy and forgiveness of God. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim receives a very different reward then Noah did in Genesis. He touched our forehead and, standing between us, he blessed us: Previously Utnapishtim was a human being. But now let Utnapishtim and his wife become like us, the gods! Ethical Hedonism In Robert Nozick s The Experience Machine Robert Nozick was a modern day American philosopher, who had a large variety of philosophical questions regarding the workings of the modern world (Feser), in 1974 Nozick finished work on his book which would give birth to the Experience Machine . In Anarchy, State, and Utopia (Nozick 1974), Nozick created the thought experiment The Experience Machine with which he attempts to challenge the idea of ethical hedonism (42). The Experience Machine is a thought experiment, in which a person is given the choice of entering a machine that would stimulate pleasure into a person s brain using a machine, and that the person could not distinguish the differences between the machine and reality, in some variations of the experiment, once a person enters the machine, that person cannot leave. (Nozick 1974, 42 43) According to Nozick, a person should choose not to enter the Experience Machine, Nozick expresses that it would be unethical to enter the Experience Machine due to none of those experiences, and the memories that come from them, being real, and that since they are all created in a man made reality, that they should hold no value to a person (43). Nozick s notion that one should choose not to enter the Experience Machine is correct, while it allows people to experience anything they ever wanted, a person should not enter the Experience Machine, because it creates a false sense of reality due to how people cannot differentiate the two, it doesn t allow people to do things ... Many Americans are familiar with the two groups, Puritans and Pilgrims, but most don t know the differences between them. The Puritans began a group of people that were members of the Anglican Church. Their goals were to rid the church of any remaining influences from Catholicism. They were mainly English Protestants of the 16th century who wanted to follow the Calvinist model of religion rather than the ever present Catholicism. Several Puritans lost faith in the Anglican Church and felt it could never be completely purified from all Catholic influence; as a result they abandoned the Church and completely separated themselves from the Anglican religion. These Puritans where referred to as Separatists. The remaining majority of Puritans inherited the title of non separating Puritans, over time these two groups would become increasingly hostile toward each other. The Puritans wanted to remain a part of the English establishment, and work toward reforming the church from within. Within 50 days U (VI) levels had declined below the prescribed treatment level of 0.18 micro M in some of the monitoring wells (Lovely et al, 2003). Acetate has been shown to stimulate growth of Geobacter species in situ (Rifle, CO). This was substantiated by the transcriptional activity of putative symporter genes (apII and apIII) at low levels of acetate. The study showed that apIII transcript activity was at its highest level when acetate was at its lowest concentrations. Although these experimental findings are not concrete evidence that acetate supports growth of Geobacter species it definitely suggests it (lovely et al, 2010). The Navajo Nation is plagued with the remnants of abandoned uranium mines. Over 500 mines exist within the Navajo nation (Navajo Uranium Report, 2013). According to the Navajo Uranium Report conducted in 2103 Of the 240 unregulated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Cyber Warfare And Global Affairs The rapid merging of telecommunications and digital infrastructure is extremely beneficial to limit human error, collect data, and create a more interdependent world. However, this merge also poses threats on computers, servers, and even machinery. The influx of hackers and keyloggers are taking advantage of our increasingly interdependent world can steal information. Even countries are using the cyber domain as a separate battlefield to fulfill their missions and acquire information. Cyberwar is relatively a new term to describe: an Internet based conflict involving politically motivated attacks on information and information systems. But the definition is constantly evolving with time and the more knowledge the public acquires about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before they are able to create these laws and regulations between countries there is a huge issue with classification. The problem with the issues that result from cyber warfare, and hacking within the cyber realm is that there is confusion within the public. In regards to what cyber warfare means, and what that means for society. To understand cyber warfare it is important to understand the distinction between a cyber attack and cyber warfare. A cyber attack is within the cyber domain with an objective of data theft, pranks, etc. While cyber warfare is still within the cyber domain, (they coexist in the same realm) but a cyber war is a state of armed conflict politically motivated with violent means with violence, just like with regular conflict, with the regular war itself. However, this area of cyber warfare is not something we can measure or separate like borders of a state because it is not very tangible and it is a fairly new topic, so we don t know the jurisdictions of it. There are so many questions regarding how to make sense of cyber warfare and an even more confusing legal conceptual of a cyber war to fit into the established law of war. Since the growing number of cyberattacks, the United States created a separate command called the Cyber Command on June 23, 2009. The secretary of defense directed the commander of the US Strategic Command to establish a sub unified command, US Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM). Full Operational Capability ...
