Music In Western Europe Essay
Music Performance in Western Europe Seeing Europe and it s many treasures over sixteen days in
a life changing experience. Not everyone can say that they got to perform in four different
countries across Europe or that they have even been to Europe. From sightseeing in London to
performing in the mountains of Switzerland there was never a dull moment in our limited time
there. It was amazing how different each city is from each other and the cultural differences we
experienced. No matter how different each city was, however there was always at least this one
thing in common; their passion for music. Our journey first started in the busy city of London,
England. After landing, we set off to the village of Windsor to see the Windsor

The Tower of London has always played a prominent role in the English s history. Controlling the
Tower has always been important to controlling the country because of it s position on the River
Thames. Because it is so important it has been besieged several times. There is also a group of
at least six ravens that reside in the Tower of London. The ravens in the tower are there due to a
popular superstition that if the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall
and Britain with it . Some of the ravens were even bred in Somerset specifically for the tower.
The bird s flight feathers on one wing are clipped so that they cannot fly away. That same day
we visited Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard. The changing of the guard is
a colorful ceremony where the sentries are relieved and replaced by a new batch of sentries. The
ceremony is done every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday between January and March.
Buckingham Palace was built in 1703 and originally built for the Duke of Buckingham and was
called the Buckingham House. In 1761, King George III acquired the house and made it a private
residence for Queen Charlotte and was from then on known as The Queen s House. It was enlarged
twice in the 19th century and then once more in the 20th century. The next place we visited was the
Westminster Abbey. The Westminster Abbey is a large, Gothic abbey church in the

Skull Fracture Research Paper
Skull Fracture, Pediatric
A skull fracture is a break or crack in one of the bones that make up the skull. Skull fractures range
in severity. They are usually more serious if:
They happen with an injury to the brain, spine, nerves, or blood vessels.
The fractured bone has moved out of place. Bones that have moved can push into the brain or
nearby bones.
The fractured bone is at the back or bottom (base) of the skull.
Most children with a skull fracture make a full recovery.
CAUSES
This condition is usually caused by a forceful injury to the head. This can happen from:
A fall.

The Theory Of Innate Language Acquisition
A theorist who attempted to expand and explain Chomsky s original thoughts was Steven Pinker. In
the early nineties Pinker s debate of language acquisition became a popular notion due to the beliefs
within his book The Language Instinct (1994). The book describes the basic human instinct to learn
and acquire language as a means to communicate and understand situations. In a similar vein to
Chomsky he describes language as an instinct and not a skill that s dependant on acquisition. This
conceptsuggests that proof is merely the way that children can speak without formal rules being
explained and knowledge inessential in order to apply language, in a manner that would be
evolved through necessity dating back to hunter gatherer culture. The book suggests that a section
of the brain is specifically used to apply these skills and that it is an inbuilt commodity that we are
born with. However, no proof in within science has been found to agree or disagree with this idea.
A differing view that contrasts the Nativist theory of innate language acquisition is from the
theorists Sapir and Whorf. The two never wrote the hypothesis together, but due to similarities in
the thesis they are often cited together (Whorf was a student of Sapir). Their concept is based upon
an Empiricist approach in suggesting that language is acquired through circumstantial upbringing.

Comparing Martin Diamond And James Madison
Martin Diamond and James Madison would agree with David Truman s take on interest groups in
government affairs. Martin Diamond believed that to be scientific political science should focus on
facts and not value (Presentation: Human Nature, Politics, and Groups). This evidence proves that
Martin would support Truman s take on interest groups, because Martin is implying that as long as
the interest groups are so called balancing governmentby their existence, then they should be
accepted, despite if they lack values and moral integrity. Martin follows Aristotle s belief that man
is a political animal (Presentation: Human Nature, Politics, and Groups). This information provides
evidence that if Martin accepts Aristotle s belief that man

The Federal Government Of The United States Congress
The United States Congress, comprised of the House of Representatives and the Senate, composes
the Legislative Branch of the federal government of the United States. Congress is supposed to be
extremely effective at enacting legislation dealing with major national issues, both at the domestic
level and the foreign level. However, in recent years, members of Congress with differing views
have not been able to find middle ground and enact much needed legislation, although they often
did in the past. This inaction, or congressional gridlock, has existed for a while but has become an
extremely prevalent issue in recent years. In fact, according to a paper by Sarah Binder, a
researcher at the Brookings Institution, the frequency of legislative... Show more content on

In order for legislation to be enacted, it must pass both the House and the Senate. This means that it
is much more complicated to pass laws in bicameral bodies than unicameral bodies (Lenz and
Holman). Additionally, constitutional rules, such as needing a supermajority rather than a simple
majority, can cause gridlock (Smith). If Congress only needed a simple majority, as in only
needing fifty one percent of votes to be in favor of the bill, rather than a two thirds supermajority,
then Congress would be able to enact a much larger amount of legislation. In 2016, there was a
prime example of congressional gridlock. Senate Democrats blocked a bill that was intended to
fight the Zika virus, an infection that can cause birth defects in pregnant women, multiple times.
According to the New York Times, the reason they blocked the bill was because they wanted
Republicans to drop an effort to block Planned Parenthood from receiving money to combat the
mosquito borne disease (Huetteman and Tavernise). Historically, Republicans have typically gone
against Planned Parenthood, a reproductive health care provider, while Democrats have routinely
supported the organization. Since the organization would not receive money to combat the disease,
which although typically transmitted via mosquito bite can also be transmitted through sexual
activity, Democrats simply refused to pass the bill. The

Power Struggle In Macbeth
Power is a very common theme in many dramatic literary works and it is very apparent in
William Shakespeare s Macbeth. Known simply as the Scottish Play in the theatre community,
this tragedy perfectly encompasses the desire of a character to gain power over others and free
themselves from opposition. The power struggle that takes place within the play is not just a
struggle to obtain power, but a struggle with what the power does to those who hold it. The
message of the play is that unchecked ambition can be an extremely destructive force and can cause
the downfall of a character with a once very promising future. During the play, Macbethlearns a
prophecy about himself which includes becoming Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland in his

Cupcake Stands
Making a cupcake stand by yourself is not hard at all. They can be made from cardboard, plastic,
metal, or glass. Cardboard DIY cupcakes stands are probably the easiest and quickest to make so
that is the style we will use for this example. First, you must decide how many tiers you want for
your cupcakestand and decide what shape you would like them to be. Stands with circular tiers
are very common so we will use that as an example. Building your stand with, say, five tiers will
require five different size cardboard circles, with the largest circle at the base of the cupcake stand
and the smallest circle at the top. It s important to know that each tiers base should be small enough
compared to the next tier lower to allow the cupcakes enough room to sit on the ledge without their
tops being squashed by the next tier higher. Two inches should be sufficient, making each
succeeding tier four total inches smaller.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mark the undersides by centering you are straight edge on each tier and lightly scribe two
perpendicular lines, now measure two inches away from the center of the tier in each direction.
Mark these spots and measure 1/2 inch further. Mark these spots as well; the space in between
these two spots, once cut out, will serve as the stabilizing points for the braces of the tiers which
will fit snugly into these locations. Follow this step again to make eight stabilizing points in each
tier. Smaller top tiers may only require for bracing

Romeo and his cousin Benvolio from act one scene one of Romeo and Juliet and this is the

Diabetes is a very sensitive chronic condition that involves high levels of blood glucose in the
body due the lack of insulin or the body s failure to use insulin efficiently (U.S. National Library

affects the individual s insulin metabolism and causes glucose to build up in the blood stream (U.S.
National Library of Medicine). It is often caused by lifestyle choices and is rarely caused by
genetics (U.S. National Library of Medicine). Insulin plays a very big role in diabetes. Insulin is a

sensitivity is reduced to insulin (U.S. National Library of Medicine). Individuals who have
untreated type II diabetes are prone to other severe diseases such as atherosclerosis and
hypertension, therefore it is very important to stay active and eat healthy (U.S. National Library of
Medicine).
Prevalence of the disease: Incidence: this is statistical how many people get/have the disease in

Type II diabetes is often diagnosed later on in life so it is referred to as adult onset diabetes (U.S.
National Library of Medicine). In 2012, the World Health Organization reported that 1.5 million
deaths were directly caused by diabetes (World Health Organization, 2015). The WHO reported
that 90% of diagnosed diabetes results in type II diabetes (World Health Organization, 2015). In
2014, they also reported that in low and middle income families more than 80% of deaths occur
because of diabetes (World Health Organization, 2015). These deaths simply occurred because
people were not eating healthy and receiving enough nutrients as well as not getting enough
exercise (World Health Organization, 2015). Individuals who live in a community that lacks
healthy food sources such as grocery stores are more likely to develop type II diabetes (World
Health Organization, 2015). In the United States alone, over 9% of the total population have

The Effects And Effects Of The Industrial Revolution...
the Victorian years, some of the main characteristics we think of the industrial revolution and the
effects during the Victorian period. In this assignment I m going to explain the impact that the
industrial revolution had on people in
There are three main characteristics of the industrial revolution which most people would think of
first which are urbanization, suburb slums and agricultural revolution.
Urbanization is when people move from small towns and the countryside to live in cities for
more job opportunities. It developed to many people living in overcrowded houses, which lead to
social classes being organized into geographical zones. So, the working classes and under classes

For example, the seed drill which is a machine that was able to plant seeds deeper and in regular
rows, and using the method of a crop rotation which is when crops were rotated on three fields
instead of two this kept soil fertile, so more crops could grow.
There were many effects during the industrial revolution some were economic, and some were
social. One of the economic effects was the leisure industry. Using new technology and
transportation many people were able to travel more using the national railway networks, people
were able to travel for days out to the seaside for a cheap fare and so many business people
started to run hotels for mainly the middle class to go for holidays. There were many places
people could go for leisure like the Vauxhall pleasure gardens it was a place for all to go to
escape reality it had a small entrance fee, but it was a place for all social classes to mix and
socialise. With all these new places and businesses there was more opportunities for regular and full
time employment. Victorian leisure became a popular culture in Britain and its modernization
under the boost of the industrial revolution. As industrialism and urban growth began to grind
down traditional patterns of rural life. Music halls became very popular by the 1800 s and
succeeded as a prototype modern entertainment industry . The middle class had more options of

RenпїЅ Descartes, The Evil Demon Hypothesis, And The...
In the 1600s, RenГ© Descartes, through his written meditations, sought out to find what we can
be certain of as humans. His plan was to find any belief that could be doubted, and throw it away.
He would do this by weeding out all the beliefs that he was uncertain about, leaving him with the
beliefs that he was certain about. Then, he wished to use those beliefs he considered certain as
his foundation for further knowledge. He went through multiple steps to come to his final
conclusion. Finally, after every phase of his mediation, he created what is called the dream
hypothesis, the evil demon hypothesis, and the Cogito argument. The dream hypothesis, which
Descartes came up with through his first meditation, is based on the idea that there is no way to
tell whether one is living in reality or in a dream at any given moment. In Descartes first
meditation, he states that there are never any sure signs by means of which being awake can be
distinguished from being asleep (Descartes). He is trying to explain his point that it is
impossible to know whether reality is not just a dream because when one is sleeping, they do
not cognitively know that they are in a dream, therefore one cannot be assured that the reality
they are experiencing is not just a dream. Because some dreams feel so lifelike, it could be possible
that the life we know may just be a dream. For example, dreams are commonly day to day
experiences, like going to class, so if I have dreamed I have gone

Behind The Battle Of Berlin Wall Analysis
Freedom shakes the grounds of Berlin Germany as Ronald Reagan gives the best motivational
speech of all time. He has a goal set and he will not stop until he does just that. In Frost s work he
also has a goal and a battle that he is fighting, both of these men fight against a wall that does
nothing but cut relationships in half. I believe that the wall in both of these works should be
taken down. Every man deserves a chance at freedom, and with a wall being a constant reminder
of separation, that is not possible. Twelve foot high and 103 miles long, the wall that does
everything but good to the city of Berlin. The wall that stood amongst the city of Berlin had one
job and it served its purpose well, to separate. In Frost s poem he lived amongst the battle of
separation also as the wall between him and his neighbor has done nothing but cause pain and

The wall in Frost s poem is built between neighbors. Nature takes a tole on the health and
condition of the wall, over time each year after a long harsh winter the wall must be cared to and

neighbors go through so much hard work and heart ache so that there separation is not broken.
They go through battles each year mentally and physically fighting the wall, nature, and each
other, instead of making peace and love between the two. In Reagan s passage the wall is
separating not only angry neighbor, but family and two sides of a city. The Berlin wall was put

Literacy Narrative Essay example
At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward

the very basic posts on facebook expressing one s opinion on something or articles and threads

You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I m not
the same person that I was. I guess you could say it s part of growing up. It never really was
intentional but it s just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing
are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don t
personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the
most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally
and professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need
to write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to.
Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am
assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find
myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this
would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded
the majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course
and therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Being forced to write in such high
volume every week for an entire school year was not enjoyable for myself and as a result the

The Challenges Of Global Logistics
On Amazon s global site, people from around the world can purchase items, from clothes to toys to
food and have them shipped directly to their front door. While this can seem to be a great
opportunity, shipping logistics can be a nightmare for Amazon and take extensive amounts of time
for the buyer. One student, Xiao Bixue, from Beijing, Chinaexplained that the quality of goods from
Amazon are good, but the tariffs are expensive and shipping takes time (Bixue and Xinling). With
the differences in cultures and distance to consider, how can Amazon expect to compete globally?
The Challenges to global logistics
There are many challenges to Amazon when considering global logistics. Some processes must be
done through the U.S. Amazon website. Shipping costs can be high. And, because Amazon is
shipping products greater distances, time plays a large factor in receiving and returning products.
How to deal with these issues can be quite complex. Differences in expectations, such as quality
and price, should also be a consideration. Due to the variety of culture, how the customer should be
treated can differ as well.
Because most product descriptions and comments are written in English, non English speaking
people have a difficult time purchasing on Amazon s Global store. Only general descriptions are
translated and some translations can be confusing or completely wrong. Because Amazon has
global customers, they also have a wide variety of expectations from these customers. Areas

left Fraunhofer orphaned and forced him to start working as an apprentice for a harsh lens maker
named Philipp Anton Weichelsberger. This was appropriate because since the age of 10 Joseph
was already working in his familys workshop. Weichelsberger used Fraunhofer primarily as slave
labor, often driving him to near starvation and exhaustion. However, on July 21, 1801, the
workshop in which Fraunhofer was working in collapsed. Although it seemed like a tragic incident
at the time, in hindsight this changed Joseph von Fraunhofer s life for the better, and therefore
changed the course of astronomy. This collapse caused a rescue... Show more content on

He had been using a very thin slit to separate the light into its component colors, but discovered
that a wire mesh could be assembled in which the holes would act as hundreds of very thin slits.
This was effective because the wire mesh would split, then re split the passing light. Thus, in 1821
he constructed a diffracting grating involving 260 wires that would produce a widely dispersed
spectrum. Although revolutionary, it took forty years before advances were made on his work due
to the fact that extensive time and expensive equipment were needed to duplicate his work. With
his invention of the diffraction grating, he transformed spectroscopy from a qualitative art to a
quantitative science by demonstrating how to accurately measure the wavelength of light

Food Is The Highest Sign Of Igbo Hospitality
Food is a main part of our daily life that brings our families together at least once a day to
reconnect. It does not only keep us alive and functioning, but it helps us to learn and immerse
ourselves into other cultures. Food can symbolize different things in a certain culture, such as a
holiday or a celebration of some sort. An example is that on Jewish Passover each of the foods
during the Seder meal have a specific meaning, and is eaten to help with the remembrance of certain
events in their cultural history. Food can also show different cultures customs and their perceptions
of what good manners are.
In the Igbo culture, food is mentioned quite often, especially around times of celebration. It brings
people together to share one common thing, their desire for delicious foods. The different food each
have different meanings. Igbo people use their food to show gratitude, hospitality, and to express
certain customs. For example, the Kola Nut is the highest sign of Igbo hospitality. But, receiving a
Kola Nut was only a privilege for the men of the village, not the women. They would first bless the
Kola Nut, then break it, and lastly distribute it. Another food that is mentioned quite a bit
throughout Things Fall Apart and that has quite a significance is Palm wine. Palm wine is mostly
mentioned whenever one of the main characters has someone inside their home, during times of
celebration, and also during the time after Ikemefuna s death. An example of when the palm wine

Lily Relationships
Throughout the book Lily s relationship with her parents changes and we can see it evolve in four
different stages. First, Lily loves her mother and doesn t like her abusive father. Second, Lily now
hates T. Ray and doubts about her mother. Then, Lily doubts about her father and wonders about
giving him another chance, and now hates her mother. Finally, she forgives both of her parents and
accepts them. This is the way I think think the relationship between Lily and her parents changes
during the course of the novel
The first stage, Lily doesn t really like her dad and doesn t really know anything about her mother,

Visual Distraction Essay
Visual Distraction and its effects on reaction time in humans
Abstract
This research project explores the effects and consequences of visual distraction on reaction times
in adults. In this study we want to see if participants who are visually distracted have a slower pre
motor time than those who are not visually distracted. This is crucial in situations such as driving
as we believe there are many accidents that arise from distractions. In order to address the question,
we will collect sufficient participants and perform simple experiments to gather required results.
Our results will contain accurate measurements of reaction times which will be a critical factor for
gaining knowledge in this area.
This field of study caught our attention as we believe there are many on road accidents which
result from mainly visual and other sorts of distractions such as audio. Distractions are said to be a
fundamental factor which contributes to a slower pre motor time in traffic conditions(Holahan,
Culler et al. 1978). Similar studies have been done in this field(Triggs and Harris 1982, Consiglio,
Driscoll et al. 2003), However they mainly focus on a broad spectrum of distractions and don t go
into specific details of each type of distraction. Knowing this, we want to examine systematically
the effects of visual environmental distractions on reaction times of individuals.
A study performed in Great Britain states significant amount of deaths occur yearly which are

Catch 22 Dialectical Journal
1.Initially upon reading this book, I found it to be very strange. The progression of the story
doesn t follow an exactly linear path and the narrator often digresses and goes in circles. This
makes the story very hard to follow in the beginning. However once I had adjusted to this style of
writing, I found the book to be quite interesting. Despite the fact that this story is about war, it
manages to be humorous at times, and all of the characters are well written despite the fact that
they were very exaggerated. This story caused me to actually react emotionally at several points,
especially at points when certain characters like Mcwatt or Nately died in such tragic ways. I
remained interested in the story the entire way through, and was only disappointed by the fact that
not a single character who acted and an antagonist was punished in any way. 2.The story Catch 22

Orr was so small and ugly. Who would protect him if he lived. (Heller,387) This passage is right
after Yossarian returns from the hospital after being shot in the leg. He asks Dobbs to kill the
Colonel so that the missions won t be raised anymore, but Dobbs refuses since he has no more
missions to fly. When Yossarian returns to his tent, Orr is there working on the faucet for his
stove again. Yossarian tells him to stop, but Orr says he needs to finish before the winter so
Yossarian can have a warm tent even if he isn t around. After talking about how Orr had been
shot down every mission, Yosarian began to worry for Orr. He expresses a desire to protect a

Oppression In Jane Eyre
The Impression of Oppression in Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre by Charlotte BrontГ« depicts the rigid social structure and clear division between the
upper and lower classes of Victorian society, in which wealth and status determined one s beliefs,
career, and treatment from those surrounding them. Those of the upper class did not typically
converse or involve themselves with those viewed as beneath them; however, Jane Eyre fights the
separation between the classes to which she has fallen victim at both Gateshead and Lowood
school. Her refusal to conform to the hierarchy eventually leads to the meddling between the
Victorian era elite and peasant class, as seen through Jane Eyre s romantic relationship with Edward
Rochester, an upperclassman and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Reed family evidently still carries this grudge against Jane s side of the family, as they all
treat her as part of a lower class that is unworthy to live with them or be associated with them in
any way.
The only time that a member of the Reed family speaks to Jane is when they are belittling her,
hoping to further assert their elite dominance over the lower class. In one particular quarrel,
John Reed, the oppressive Roman emperor and slave driver, throws a book at Jane s head to
physically proclaim his dominance over her, to which Jane responds by verbally firing back at
his elitist oppression. (BrontГ« 13) The battle between the social classes concludes with Jane
being banished to the horrifying red room as punishment for attempting to overthrow the elite
power, John Reed, even though John was the clear instigator of the scuffle. Jane is later
condemned by the house servants for her attempt to overthrow her young master. Jane and John
are both children, but due to the wealth and status of his parents, John is allowed to rule over
Jane, making Jane, as the Gateshead servants would describe, less than a servant because she
does nothing for her keep. (BrontГ« 15) Jane continuously faces this maltreatment at Gateshead
until an outburst directed towards Mrs. Reed causes her to be sent away to Lowood school, a
place where Mrs. Reed hopes Jane will perhaps be taught to conform to the societal norm of how a
young girl like Jane should act in

Character s Name Jonah Character Analysis
Character s Name: Jonah Meaning(s): A dove, Promise
Analysis: Throughout the story, Jonah has shown many different attitudes and moods. He is
always faced with a devastating choice between one thing and another, and that is shown when he
sees Andrea/Virginia Dares tracer in the woods right when they are leaving. He before promised
Andrea that he would find her tracer and make history correct. When she joins her tracer however,
Andrea completely changes history by forcing her tracer to move and see her father, John White.
He has shown much promise to all of the characters throughout the series.

have read, it has been seen that there is not as much purity in Katherine. That doesn t mean she is
the worst person, but is at the most averaged right in the middle of being pure and not being pure.
This meanly goes with one part were Katherine is trying to calm Andrea down from all the mess
she has made. Then, when Jonah came in to chew Andrea for sabatoshing them, Katherine starts to

Weight Loss And Extreme Diets
How many time has someone started a popular weight loss diet and it either didn t work, or the
results didn t last long before the weight loss came right back? In America now, there are over 30
states that have 25% or more of the adults and children that are overweight or obese (Cleveland
State University, 2013, p. 217). Since the beginning of this obesity epidemic, the risk of
cardiovascular and metabolic diseases have increased over the years (Cordain, 2011, pp. 5 7). This
results in new fad dietsthat are introduced to the media every year and soon after, everyone is
trying it out to lose those pounds fast. These fad diets don t usually entail lifestyle changes, rather
they suggest a quick fix to a person s weight lossproblem. There are weight loss supplements and
extreme diets that cut out one or more food groups entirely. This can make it difficult for most
people to stick with. One of these diets suggests that if we pick up the eating lifestyle of our
Paleolithic ancestors, we could become as healthy and fit as they were millions of years ago
(Cordain, 2011, p. 6). This Paleo diet was first thought of by Dr. S. Boyd Eaton and Melvin
Konner in the mid 1980 s when they did primary research into what our ancestors ate and what
affects this diet would have on current Homo sapiens (Frassetto, Schloetter, Mietus Synder, Morris,
Sebastian, 2009). They found that the ideal diet [is] found in the nutritional practices of our Stone
Age ancestors (Cordain, 2011, p. 4). At

Sympathy For The Devil Summary
The scholarly article Sympathy For The Devil by Lin Haire Sargeant was a very informative and
persuasive article. This article focused on the evaluation of the movies of Wuthering Heights, and
the differences between the characters, more specifically Heathcliff. It talked about how most of
the movies made the viewer have sympathy for the devil, or sympathy for Heathcliff. In the first
movie that was spoken about, the 1939 adaption, they portray Heathcliff not as the one who is
sinning, but the one who has been sinned upon. She states that this movie almost makes it seem
that Heathcliff is really a good guy, but he has just had a streak of bad luck. Her evaluation of

In the next movie evaluation, the spanish adaption is mentioned from 1954. In this adaption, the
author of the article shows the sympathy for Heathcliff through the dislike of Edgar. In this
movie apparently, Edgar is displayed as a cruel man, and his symbolism through insects is a lot
harsher and worse than Heathcliff s symbolism of light. I agree with the author s evaluation in
the fact that this symbolism makes the viewer more sympathetic towards Heathcliff than Edgar.
In the 1970 version, Lin Haire Sargeant makes a point to evaluate the tidiness of not only the set,
but the cast and the clothing also. She says that this adaption has Heathcliff more as an Edgar
type, which could contribute to sympathy the viewers have for Heathcliff. I do agree with this. In
the more modern cinema, people like to see more clean, presentable people, and the cleaner and
cookie cutter they are, the more the viewers will like them. This was a very good and effective
point to bring up in this article, because I would not have previously thought of evaluating this type

A P , written by John Updike, is based on a moment in the life of a cashier. He was known as

during days when there are not so many customers.
His boss, Lengel is a symbol of authority to Sammy in this literary work. Sammy seemingly dreads
the sight of his manager. This is depicted when Sammy states:
Then everybody s luck begins to run out. Lengel comes in from haggling with a truck full of

hides all day when the girls touch his eye. Lengel s pretty dreary, teaches Sunday school and the

However, when the girls were embarrassed by Lengel Sammy s personality changed. He stood up
to his manager and quit his job. This is demonstrated in the dialogue between Sammy and Lengel
which states: The girls, and who d blame them are in a hurry to get out, so I say I quit .... Did you
say something, Sammy? I said I quit. I thought you did. You didn t have to embarrass them. (490)
This dialogue between the two characters exhibits Sammy standing up to authority. He no longer
wanted to witness this kind of behavior. Consequently, he had to quit his job. Initially, Sammy was

Implementing Compulsory Voting in Canada Essay example
A compulsory voting system similar to the one used in Australia is not a system Canada should
implement. Compulsory voting in the context of a democratic society can be a misleading term
(Lever, 2010). Canada practices the secret ballot process in voting, and so it is impossible to
verify if someone has cast a legally valid ballot. If countries have a singular goal of simply
increasing voter turnout, compulsory votingcould remedy this problem and it should be more
accurately defined as being compulsory voter turnout (Lever, 2010). The belief that compulsory
voting inherently improves democracyis misleading (Lever, 2010). Canada should not force its
citizen s to vote because other then increasing voter turnout, compulsory voting would... Show more

Implementing a similar system in Canada would be difficult and problematic because Canadian
citizens have become accustom to a system of individualized rights and freedoms. The Right to Not
Vote:
Abstaining from alienation occurs when a voter s utility for [their] favorite candidate fails to
exceed a certain positive threshold (Blomberg, 1995. Pg.1023). An alienated voter is someone
who with distinct purpose of mind avoids voting for the purpose of showing discontent often for
unqualified candidates (Blomberg, 1995). Implementing compulsory voting would force these
already alienated voters to vote regardless if they disagree with all the candidates involved and
those candidates platforms or beliefs. High rates of non voting citizens exercising their right to
not vote may also lure highly qualified individuals to run for public office (Blomberg, 1995.
Pg.1024 25). A return of qualified individuals would increase the alienated voter turnout, which
would supersede the need for a compulsory vote. Some in favor of compulsory voting suggest that
if people are dissatisfied with the candidate options that they can provide a write in vote, meaning
they put the name of someone they wish to vote for on the ballot themselves. However, the
problem with a write in vote is that you are not included in the percentage of nonvoters (Bloomberg,
1995). The percentage of nonvoters can be important data because it can be an indication to the
political community, and may

Sleepwalking Essay
Sleepwalking
Somnambulism, or sleepwalking, belongs to a group of parasomnias. This disorder of arousal is
characterized by complex motor behaviors initiated during stages 3 and 4 of non rapid eye
movement (NREM) sleep (slow wave sleep) (3). Behaviors during sleepwalking episodes can vary
greatly. Some episodes are limited to sitting up, fumbling and getting dressed, while others include
more complex behaviors such as walking, driving a car, or preparing a meal (2). After awakening,
the sleepwalker usually has no recollection of what has happened and may appear confused and
disoriented. The behaviors performed while sleepwalking are said to be autonomous automatisms.

This stage is believed to help people enter deeper stages of sleep (4). Stage 3 sleep consists of 20 50
percent delta activity and stage 4 sleep of more than 50 percents delta activity (4). Stages 3 and
4 are characterized as being slow wave sleep in addition to being the deepest levels of sleep.
Approximately 90 minutes after being asleep, people enter rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (4).
REM sleep consists of rapid eye movements, a desynchronized EEG, sensitivity to external
stimulation, muscle paralysis and dreaming (4).
Sleepwalking occurs during stages 3 and 4 of the sleep cycle, the deepest levels of sleep. This
slow wave sleep is normally characterized by synchronized EEG activity (4). This indicates that
mental activity is very low during these stages of sleep. However researchers have shown that the
EEG of a sleepwalker has diffuse, rhythmic, high voltage bursts of delta activity associated with
abrupt motor activity (1). This is very different from the EEG activity normally associated with
slow wave sleep. In addition to the EEG results, they found that there is a decrease in regional
cerebral blood flow in the frontopariental cortices during sleepwalking (1). This indicates that
sleepwalking is a dissociated state consisting of motor arousal and persisting mind sleep, which
seems to arise from the selective activation of thalamocingulate circuits and the persisting inhibition
of other thalamocortical arousal systems (3).

Throughout history, American society has famously taken advantage of non European cultures and

have famously exploited the cultures and stereotypes of Native American s and African Americans
for the sole purpose of profit and increased entertainment value. In American society, there has been
the era of Blaxploitation films in which African Americans society was shown through raunchy
and low budget films. Sports teams, colleges, and public schools have turned Native Americans
into an irresponsible excuse of a mascot the can offend and can be considered disrespectful by
those in their society while being called an honor by those who use it. In some cases though, it
can be seen that when members of the respective societies that are being depicted within the
media are allowed to have some creative decision with it, that some real issues can be addressed
and shown to an audience that otherwise would have never thought about it. This was popularly
down through Dave Chappelle s, Chappelle s Show, and through rap music. As seen in the

Pest Control In Silent Spring
Rachel Carson s Silent Spring is still today as controversial, groundbreaking, and relevant as it was
when it was first published in 1962. The book argues that uncontrolled and unexamined pesticide
use harms and even kills not only animals, but humans too. Carson documents the negative effects
of pesticides on the environment. The text includes strong accusations against the chemical industry
and a call to look at how the use of chemicals can cause damage and impact the world around us.
The book s intended audience is the general public because Carson wants to bring the problem of
harmful pesticideuse to everyone s attention. She also successfully demonstrates the fragility of the
biodiversity on the planet and emphasizes how chemical use can have large repercussions.
How could intelligent beings seek to control a few unwanted species by a method that contaminated
the entire environment and brought the threat of disease and death event to their own kind? (8)
Rachel Carson s question, asked in Silent Spring, requires the reader to take stock in the conditions
under which Americans at the time were dealing with pest control. The title, Silent Spring, comes
from the silence in many forests and meadows due to the poisoning of songbirds, insects and other
invertebrates, and even plants. This now historical account of the use of pesticides has raised
America s awareness of the dangers of agricultural chemicals that had become commonly accepted
during this time.

Joe stays loyal to him. When Joe goes out to visit Pip in London he soon realizes the difference in

generation, we are ones to come together through our views and opinions, rather than our raceor
ethnic background. Beforehand, if it was split, it was because of racism. But now that there are
examples for everyone, it is based on our beliefs. According to William Frey, racial diversity will
be the most defining and impactful characteristic of the millennial generation (Frey, 2016). Frey
mentions that millennials have the ability to assimilate, advocate and accept different races and
make the transition to a more racially diverse nation more successful (Frey, 2016).
Tatishe Nteta conducted a discussion where she analyzes the racial attitudes from adolescents in the
21st century compared to the racial attitudes from older generations. She found that as time went
on, the norm of racial equality was more widespread and that racial relations were not as
contentious as compared to earlier eras (Nteta,

China s Outbound Direct Investment
The type of China s outbound direct investment has also evolved over the years. In the 1980s and
1990s, China s ODI was largely undertaken by state owned enterprises (SOEs) which focused on
acquiring assets in natural resources, infrastructure and logistics (Rosen Hanemann, 2009). This
type of ODI was used to meet the demand of a growing China that needed commodities such as oil,
iron, timber, and cement to develop its infrastructure and provide the resources needed for its cities
to quickly urbanize (Rosen Hanemann, 2009). There are not ample amounts of these commodities
in China, thus Chinese resource firms turned abroad to secure supplies of these natural resources
through mining and other extraction investments (Rosen Hanemann, 2009).
In the past five years, however, China s outbound direct investment has entered a new era as
Chinese investment interest has shifted from targeting resource rich developing countries to
advanced economies (Hanemann Huotari, 2015). Though energy is still a targeted industry,
Chinese firms are eager to acquire advanced manufacturing assets that allow them to modernize
technology and move up the value chain (Hanemann Lysenko, 2013, p.1). This has led to increased
Chinese investment in developed economies, including the United States and Europe, in sectors like
high tech, modern service assets and infrastructure (Hanemann Lysenko, 2013). Chinese direct
investment in the United States

My Reflection Of A Trip To The Courtroom
I went to the Lindsey Flanigan Courthouse on Friday August 25, 2017. Before the visit, I
expected the courthouse to look like the courthouses I have visited in New York or Atlanta.
Inside the courtroom was different than expected and the rooms were smaller, but I think that is
because it was only a docket. I have never sit in on a docket case, but I assumed the courtroom
etiquette would be the same as all other cases. I expected there to be silence in the gallery, with
some hushed whispers if conversation was necessary. In the case that I watched, other lawyers
were having full conversations in the first row of the gallery, right behind the prosecutor. I also
expected the prosecutor and defense to address the judge and question the witness from the
same general area, but the prosecutor spoke from a podium closer to the judge while the defense
spoke from a podium right next to his desk. The docket case that I watched was about felony
menacing. I was unsure what felony menacing was prior to visiting court that day, but as the
case progressed the definition became a little bit clearer. The key players in the case were the
judge, prosecutor, defense and defendant, and the key witness was the arresting officer. The
defendant was arrested because the police received a call about a driver on the road waving his
gun around threatening other drivers. One of the officers responding to the call stayed with the
victim, while the other went to look for the car described in the call. Following a hint, the arresting
officer found the car in a parking lot and pulled in behind it. Upon seeing the officer exit his car, the
defendant walked out of a business with his hands in the air, saying I didn t do it. The officer had
the defendant walk toward him with his hands still in the air; when the defendant was close enough,
the officer handcuffed him. After the defendant was handcuffed through questioning the officer
determined that the defendant had weapons in the car and had an altercation with the victim that
his partner was with. The defense made a motion to suppress some of the defendant s statements
because he believed they were made during an unlawful interrogation. The defense believed that
because the

Business Model And How Their Succes Has Affected On The...
Nowadays there are many successful companies in the world, but the fact is that Walmart Inc. is
the most competent in their industry. Their strategies and business model have led them to achieve
success and make them the worlds largest retailer. In this essay I will analyze Walmarts business
model and how their succes has affected to the Corporate Social Responsibility.
First of all, what does Corporate Social Responsibility means? When we are talking about corporate
responsibility, we talk about active and voluntary social, economic and environmental improvement
contribution from companies, with the aim of improving their competitive position and their added
value.
Social responsibility is giving special attention to their workers and ... Show more content on

Its business concept is the convenience store low price and high volume, discount stores,
supermarkets and hypermarkets. Sam Walton, a leader with an innovative vision, started his own
company and became the leader in retail. Through understanding, and sometimes unusual practices
in business, led the company forward for thirty years. Walmart executives continue to rely on many
targets and traditional philosophies than its predecessor left behind while simultaneously always
one step ahead of technology and methods that changing environment. The organization has faced a
significant amount of controversy over various issues; however, none of these has made great effect
on the progress of this gigantic operation.
The future also looks bright for Walmart, especially if you can strike a comfortable balance
between increasing profits and recognition of its social responsibilities and ethical.
Walton had a reputation for caring about their customers, their employees and the community. To
maintain its market in the retail discount, Wal Mart executives continue to develop management
guidelines in accordance with the principles of Walton.
The word always can be seen in almost all the literature of Walmart. One of the deepest beliefs of
Walton was that the customer is always right, and shops are mainly produced by this philosophy.

The White House Observation
1. Activity period s time passes behind two solid oak doors. They lead to a beamingly lit room
packed with extended blacktop tables. The light source is a row of wide windows perched just
high enough to give off a view of the sky. Time here is devoted to studio aid tasks. The aroma of
ceramic glaze and brewing coffee encompass the room. Attached along the walls is numerous
wooden cupboards. The room is nearly empty besides a group of four girls who sit in the corner
carving sculptures out of clay. An outsider is able to exactly get the full conversation with just a
roaming ear. The clicking of kilns sings harmoniously concurrently to the draining of coffee into the
machine s slightly discolored pot. After the pot cease to brew the teacher... Show more content on

While entering the room students peering up can spot incandescent lighting suspending from the
highly elevated ceilings. The untouched blue and silver bleachers rest compacted to maximize
space. Posters, sponsors, and athlete banners cover the eggshell painted brick walls. A blue
curtain separates the different class space during the period. Students are ordered to perform
exhausting repetitive drills in a circuit while the critical teacher yells at their performance the
entire class. Heavily breathing, weak and weary students try to surpass fatigue. The room feels
clammy and grows bothersome. The sounds of top 40 tracks and the teacher s snarky comments
ring in everyone s ears. Irritability grows while counting along with the seconds passing on the
caged circular clock. This is until the period comes to a close and it is time to get changed and
journey back to the locker

Not everyone can say that they got to perform in four different countries across Europe or that they have even been to Europe. From sightseeing in London to performing in the mountains of Switzerland there was never a dull moment in our limited time there. It was amazing how different each city is from each other and the cultural differences we experienced. The ravens in the tower are there due to a popular superstition that if the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it . • 6. The Theory Of Innate Language Acquisition A theorist who attempted to expand and explain Chomsky s original thoughts was Steven Pinker. In the early nineties Pinker s debate of language acquisition became a popular notion due to the beliefs within his book The Language Instinct (1994). The book describes the basic human instinct to learn and acquire language as a means to communicate and understand situations. In a similar vein to Chomsky he describes language as an instinct and not a skill that s dependant on acquisition. This conceptsuggests that proof is merely the way that children can speak without formal rules being explained and knowledge inessential in order to apply language, in a manner that would be evolved through necessity dating back to hunter gatherer culture. The book suggests that a section of the brain is specifically used to apply these skills and that it is an inbuilt commodity that we are born with. However, no proof in within science has been found to agree or disagree with this idea. A differing view that contrasts the Nativist theory of innate language acquisition is from the theorists Sapir and Whorf. The two never wrote the hypothesis together, but due to similarities in the thesis they are often cited together (Whorf was a student of Sapir). Their concept is based upon an Empiricist approach in suggesting that language is acquired through circumstantial upbringing. The Federal Government Of The United States Congress The United States Congress, comprised of the House of Representatives and the Senate, composes the Legislative Branch of the federal government of the United States. Congress is supposed to be extremely effective at enacting legislation dealing with major national issues, both at the domestic level and the foreign level. However, in recent years, members of Congress with differing views have not been able to find middle ground and enact much needed legislation, although they often did in the past. This inaction, or congressional gridlock, has existed for a while but has become an extremely prevalent issue in recent years. In order for legislation to be enacted, it must pass both the House and the Senate. This means that it is much more complicated to pass laws in bicameral bodies than unicameral bodies (Lenz and Holman). Additionally, constitutional rules, such as needing a supermajority rather than a simple majority, can cause gridlock (Smith). If Congress only needed a simple majority, as in only needing fifty one percent of votes to be in favor of the bill, rather than a two thirds supermajority, then Congress would be able to enact a much larger amount of legislation. In 2016, there was a prime example of congressional gridlock. Senate Democrats blocked a bill that was intended to fight the Zika virus, an infection that can cause birth defects in pregnant women, multiple times. According to the New York Times, the reason they blocked the bill was because they wanted Republicans to drop an effort to block Planned Parenthood from receiving money to combat the mosquito borne disease (Huetteman and Tavernise). Historically, Republicans have typically gone against Planned Parenthood, a reproductive health care provider, while Democrats have routinely supported the organization. Since the organization would not receive money to combat the disease, which although typically transmitted via mosquito bite can also be transmitted through sexual activity, Democrats simply refused to pass the bill. Cardboard DIY cupcakes stands are probably the easiest and quickest to make so that is the style we will use for this example. First, you must decide how many tiers you want for your cupcakestand and decide what shape you would like them to be. Stands with circular tiers are very common so we will use that as an example. Building your stand with, say, five tiers will require five different size cardboard circles, with the largest circle at the base of the cupcake stand and the smallest circle at the top. Urbanization is when people move from small towns and the countryside to live in cities for more job opportunities. • 18. RenпїЅ Descartes, The Evil Demon Hypothesis, And The... In the 1600s, RenГ© Descartes, through his written meditations, sought out to find what we can be certain of as humans. His plan was to find any belief that could be doubted, and throw it away. He would do this by weeding out all the beliefs that he was uncertain about, leaving him with the beliefs that he was certain about. Then, he wished to use those beliefs he considered certain as his foundation for further knowledge. He went through multiple steps to come to his final conclusion. Finally, after every phase of his mediation, he created what is called the dream hypothesis, the evil demon hypothesis, and the Cogito argument. The dream hypothesis, which Descartes came up with through his first meditation, is based on the idea that there is no way to tell whether one is living in reality or in a dream at any given moment. In Descartes first meditation, he states that there are never any sure signs by means of which being awake can be distinguished from being asleep (Descartes). He is trying to explain his point that it is impossible to know whether reality is not just a dream because when one is sleeping, they do not cognitively know that they are in a dream, therefore one cannot be assured that the reality they are experiencing is not just a dream. Because some dreams feel so lifelike, it could be possible that the life we know may just be a dream. Joseph Von Faunhofer Research Paper Joseph von Fraunhofer was a German optician and physicist who discovered and influenced how astronomers view the dark line spectrum, the spectrum of the sun and the diffraction of light. On March 6, 1787 in Straubing, Bavaria, Joseph Ritter von Fraunhofer was born into a poor family where his father Franz Xaver Fraunhofer was a watch glass maker. At the age of 10, Joseph s mother, Maria Anna Frohlich passed away, and only a year after his father died. This left Fraunhofer orphaned and forced him to start working as an apprentice for a harsh lens maker named Philipp Anton Weichelsberger. This was appropriate because since the age of 10 Joseph was already working in his familys workshop. Weichelsberger used Fraunhofer primarily as slave labor, often driving him to near starvation and exhaustion. However, on July 21, 1801, the workshop in which Fraunhofer was working in collapsed. Food can symbolize different things in a certain culture, such as a holiday or a celebration of some sort. An example is that on Jewish Passover each of the foods during the Seder meal have a specific meaning, and is eaten to help with the remembrance of certain events in their cultural history. Food can also show different cultures customs and their perceptions of what good manners are. In the Igbo culture, food is mentioned quite often, especially around times of celebration. It brings people together to share one common thing, their desire for delicious foods. The different food each have different meanings. Igbo people use their food to show gratitude, hospitality, and to express certain customs. For example, the Kola Nut is the highest sign of Igbo hospitality. But, receiving a Kola Nut was only a privilege for the men of the village, not the women. They would first bless the Kola Nut, then break it, and lastly distribute it. Another food that is mentioned quite a bit throughout Things Fall Apart and that has quite a significance is Palm wine. Palm wine is mostly mentioned whenever one of the main characters has someone inside their home, during times of celebration, and also during the time after Ikemefuna s death. An example of when the palm wine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Visual Distraction Essay Visual Distraction and its effects on reaction time in humans Abstract This research project explores the effects and consequences of visual distraction on reaction times in adults. In this study we want to see if participants who are visually distracted have a slower pre motor time than those who are not visually distracted. This is crucial in situations such as driving as we believe there are many accidents that arise from distractions. In order to address the question, we will collect sufficient participants and perform simple experiments to gather required results. Our results will contain accurate measurements of reaction times which will be a critical factor for gaining knowledge in this area. This field of study caught our attention as we believe there are many on road accidents which result from mainly visual and other sorts of distractions such as audio. Distractions are said to be a fundamental factor which contributes to a slower pre motor time in traffic conditions(Holahan, Culler et al. 1978). Similar studies have been done in this field(Triggs and Harris 1982, Consiglio, Driscoll et al. 2003), However they mainly focus on a broad spectrum of distractions and don t go into specific details of each type of distraction. Knowing this, we want to examine systematically the effects of visual environmental distractions on reaction times of individuals. • 26. Catch 22 Dialectical Journal 1.Initially upon reading this book, I found it to be very strange. The progression of the story doesn t follow an exactly linear path and the narrator often digresses and goes in circles. This makes the story very hard to follow in the beginning. However once I had adjusted to this style of writing, I found the book to be quite interesting. Despite the fact that this story is about war, it manages to be humorous at times, and all of the characters are well written despite the fact that they were very exaggerated. This story caused me to actually react emotionally at several points, especially at points when certain characters like Mcwatt or Nately died in such tragic ways. I remained interested in the story the entire way through, and was only disappointed by the fact that not a single character who acted and an antagonist was punished in any way. 2.The story Catch 22 is written in... Oppression In Jane Eyre The Impression of Oppression in Jane Eyre Jane Eyre by Charlotte BrontГ« depicts the rigid social structure and clear division between the upper and lower classes of Victorian society, in which wealth and status determined one s beliefs, career, and treatment from those surrounding them. Those of the upper class did not typically converse or involve themselves with those viewed as beneath them; however, Jane Eyre fights the separation between the classes to which she has fallen victim at both Gateshead and Lowood school. The Reed family evidently still carries this grudge against Jane s side of the family, as they all treat her as part of a lower class that is unworthy to live with them or be associated with them in any way. The only time that a member of the Reed family speaks to Jane is when they are belittling her, hoping to further assert their elite dominance over the lower class. In one particular quarrel, John Reed, the oppressive Roman emperor and slave driver, throws a book at Jane s head to physically proclaim his dominance over her, to which Jane responds by verbally firing back at his elitist oppression. (BrontГ« 13) The battle between the social classes concludes with Jane being banished to the horrifying red room as punishment for attempting to overthrow the elite power, John Reed, even though John was the clear instigator of the scuffle. Jane is later condemned by the house servants for her attempt to overthrow her young master. Jane and John are both children, but due to the wealth and status of his parents, John is allowed to rule over Jane, making Jane, as the Gateshead servants would describe, less than a servant because she does nothing for her keep. (BrontГ« 15) Jane continuously faces this maltreatment at Gateshead until an outburst directed towards Mrs. Reed causes her to be sent away to Lowood school, a place where Mrs. Reed hopes Jane will perhaps be taught to conform to the societal norm of how a young girl like Jane should act in ... In America now, there are over 30 states that have 25% or more of the adults and children that are overweight or obese (Cleveland State University, 2013, p. 217). Since the beginning of this obesity epidemic, the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases have increased over the years (Cordain, 2011, pp. 5 7). This results in new fad dietsthat are introduced to the media every year and soon after, everyone is trying it out to lose those pounds fast. These fad diets don t usually entail lifestyle changes, rather they suggest a quick fix to a person s weight lossproblem. There are weight loss supplements and extreme diets that cut out one or more food groups entirely. This can make it difficult for most people to stick with. One of these diets suggests that if we pick up the eating lifestyle of our Paleolithic ancestors, we could become as healthy and fit as they were millions of years ago (Cordain, 2011, p. 6). This Paleo diet was first thought of by Dr. S. It talked about how most of the movies made the viewer have sympathy for the devil, or sympathy for Heathcliff. In the first movie that was spoken about, the 1939 adaption, they portray Heathcliff not as the one who is sinning, but the one who has been sinned upon. I agree with the author s evaluation in the fact that this symbolism makes the viewer more sympathetic towards Heathcliff than Edgar. In the 1970 version, Lin Haire Sargeant makes a point to evaluate the tidiness of not only the set, but the cast and the clothing also. She says that this adaption has Heathcliff more as an Edgar type, which could contribute to sympathy the viewers have for Heathcliff. I do agree with this. Compulsory voting in the context of a democratic society can be a misleading term (Lever, 2010). Canada practices the secret ballot process in voting, and so it is impossible to verify if someone has cast a legally valid ballot. If countries have a singular goal of simply increasing voter turnout, compulsory votingcould remedy this problem and it should be more accurately defined as being compulsory voter turnout (Lever, 2010). The Right to Not Vote: Abstaining from alienation occurs when a voter s utility for [their] favorite candidate fails to exceed a certain positive threshold (Blomberg, 1995. Pg.1023). An alienated voter is someone who with distinct purpose of mind avoids voting for the purpose of showing discontent often for unqualified candidates (Blomberg, 1995). Implementing compulsory voting would force these already alienated voters to vote regardless if they disagree with all the candidates involved and those candidates platforms or beliefs. High rates of non voting citizens exercising their right to not vote may also lure highly qualified individuals to run for public office (Blomberg, 1995. Pg.1024 25). A return of qualified individuals would increase the alienated voter turnout, which would supersede the need for a compulsory vote. Some in favor of compulsory voting suggest that if people are dissatisfied with the candidate options that they can provide a write in vote, meaning they put the name of someone they wish to vote for on the ballot themselves. Approximately 90 minutes after being asleep, people enter rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (4). REM sleep consists of rapid eye movements, a desynchronized EEG, sensitivity to external stimulation, muscle paralysis and dreaming (4). Sleepwalking occurs during stages 3 and 4 of the sleep cycle, the deepest levels of sleep. This slow wave sleep is normally characterized by synchronized EEG activity (4). This indicates that mental activity is very low during these stages of sleep. However researchers have shown that the EEG of a sleepwalker has diffuse, rhythmic, high voltage bursts of delta activity associated with abrupt motor activity (1). This is very different from the EEG activity normally associated with slow wave sleep. In addition to the EEG results, they found that there is a decrease in regional cerebral blood flow in the frontopariental cortices during sleepwalking (1). This indicates that sleepwalking is a dissociated state consisting of motor arousal and persisting mind sleep, which seems to arise from the selective activation of thalamocingulate circuits and the persisting inhibition of other thalamocortical arousal systems (3). Weekly Writing 3 Throughout history, American society has famously taken advantage of non European cultures and traditions for their own entertainment. Major media companies, colleges, and athletic organizations have famously exploited the cultures and stereotypes of Native American s and African Americans for the sole purpose of profit and increased entertainment value. In American society, there has been the era of Blaxploitation films in which African Americans society was shown through raunchy and low budget films. I feel that as a generation we are not uncomfortable when we are the only one who is a different race in a situation. While I was brainstorming where I was going to go for this project, I was conflicted. I did not understand why being a minority somewhere would make someone uncomfortable. In today s world, there are examples of all races at the top and at the bottom. That even though there are racial issues still, the protestors are filled with diversity. As a generation, we are ones to come together through our views and opinions, rather than our raceor ethnic background. Beforehand, if it was split, it was because of racism. But now that there are examples for everyone, it is based on our beliefs. According to William Frey, racial diversity will be the most defining and impactful characteristic of the millennial generation (Frey, 2016). Frey mentions that millennials have the ability to assimilate, advocate and accept different races and make the transition to a more racially diverse nation more successful (Frey, 2016). In the 1980s and 1990s, China s ODI was largely undertaken by state owned enterprises (SOEs) which focused on acquiring assets in natural resources, infrastructure and logistics (Rosen Hanemann, 2009). This type of ODI was used to meet the demand of a growing China that needed commodities such as oil, iron, timber, and cement to develop its infrastructure and provide the resources needed for its cities to quickly urbanize (Rosen Hanemann, 2009). There are not ample amounts of these commodities in China, thus Chinese resource firms turned abroad to secure supplies of these natural resources through mining and other extraction investments (Rosen Hanemann, 2009). In the past five years, however, China s outbound direct investment has entered a new era as Chinese investment interest has shifted from targeting resource rich developing countries to advanced economies (Hanemann Huotari, 2015). Though energy is still a targeted industry, Chinese firms are eager to acquire advanced manufacturing assets that allow them to modernize technology and move up the value chain (Hanemann Lysenko, 2013, p.1). Inside the courtroom was different than expected and the rooms were smaller, but I think that is because it was only a docket. I have never sit in on a docket case, but I assumed the courtroom etiquette would be the same as all other cases. I expected there to be silence in the gallery, with some hushed whispers if conversation was necessary. In the case that I watched, other lawyers were having full conversations in the first row of the gallery, right behind the prosecutor. I also expected the prosecutor and defense to address the judge and question the witness from the same general area, but the prosecutor spoke from a podium closer to the judge while the defense spoke from a podium right next to his desk. The key players in the case were the judge, prosecutor, defense and defendant, and the key witness was the arresting officer. The defendant was arrested because the police received a call about a driver on the road waving his gun around threatening other drivers. One of the officers responding to the call stayed with the victim, while the other went to look for the car described in the call. Following a hint, the arresting officer found the car in a parking lot and pulled in behind it. Upon seeing the officer exit his car, the defendant walked out of a business with his hands in the air, saying I didn t do it. The officer had the defendant walk toward him with his hands still in the air; when the defendant was close enough, the officer handcuffed him. After the defendant was handcuffed through questioning the officer determined that the defendant had weapons in the car and had an altercation with the victim that his partner was with. The defense made a motion to suppress some of the defendant s statements because he believed they were made during an unlawful interrogation. The defense believed that because the ... • 46. The White House Observation 1. Activity period s time passes behind two solid oak doors. They lead to a beamingly lit room packed with extended blacktop tables. The light source is a row of wide windows perched just high enough to give off a view of the sky. Time here is devoted to studio aid tasks. The aroma of ceramic glaze and brewing coffee encompass the room. Attached along the walls is numerous wooden cupboards. The room is nearly empty besides a group of four girls who sit in the corner carving sculptures out of clay. An outsider is able to exactly get the full conversation with just a roaming ear.
