Buzz Words
Buzz Words provides a structure for
developing students’ receptive vocabulary
i.e. their understanding of words.
ACE Dictionary
ACE Aurally Coded English
Words are grouped together
according to the vowel sounds
heard at or near the beginning of
each word
To use the ACE dictionary you
need to:
(1)Listen to the first clear vowel sound
(2) Identify the initial letter
(3)Count how many syllables in the word
Getting Started
The index on pages ii and iii directs you to
the page you need
Step 1
• Identify the first clear vowel sound in the
spoken word
• Sixteen vowel sounds are listed down the
left hand side on the index with
picture/colour cues
NB If the first vowel in the syllable is neutral
go for the stronger vowel in the second
syllable eg balloon (long /oo/);
remarkable (/ar/)
Step 2
• Find what you think is the first letter
from the alphabet sequence along the
top of the pages
• Read across from the vowel sound and
down from the first letter to find the
page you need
Step 3
• Turn to the given page number
• Identify the number of syllables in each
word (taps or chin test) and choose the
correct column
• Number of stars = number of syllables
Have a Go!
1. First strong vowel sound
2. First letter
3. Number of syllables
