Soil erosion is a naturally occurring process that affects all landforms and can occur slowly over time or rapidly, causing serious topsoil loss. There are four main types of erosion: sheet erosion, gully erosion, channel erosion, and rill erosion. Soil erosion is caused by both natural processes like wind and water flowing downhill, as well as human activities such as overcropping, deforestation, and overgrazing. Problems from soil erosion include loss of topsoil, damage to fields, decreased plant productivity, and desertification. Remedies include avoiding overgrazing, conserving wetlands, terracing, and encouraging water infiltration.
