ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION
Environmental pollution
is defined as the un
desired spread of toxic
chemicals in to the
aquatic and terrestrial
habits of the world
WATER POLLUTION
AIR POLLUTION
SOIL POLLUTION
NOISE POLLUTION
It means addition of
some excess
materials or heat to
water bodies making
it harmful for all
living beings
OR
Water pollution
occurs when water is
contaminated with
some hazardous
chemicals and foreign
substances that are
harmful to humans,
plants and animals.
HOW TO
IDENTIFY IT ?
 Water has a bad taste or odor
 Reduction in number of aquatic
lives
 Growth of aquatic weeds in water
bodies
 Oil or grease floating on water
surface
 Out break of an epidemic
FRESH WATER
POLLUTION
It occurs when pollutants enter water
bodies such as ponds , rivers , lake etc
It may occur either naturally or through
man made process
eg :- 1.Silt formed in rivers
2. Industrial effluents
Marine water is easily polluted by
contaminants carried by rivers and also
by oil spills, radio active and industrial
wastes
Eg:- Oil spills from ships
Mining of poly metalicnodules
SOURCES OF WATER
POLLUTION
When the source and place of
pollution is readily identifiable , it is
knows as point source of water
pollution.
Eg:- municipal and industrial
discharge pipes
When a source of pollution can not be
readily identifiable , It is known as non
point source of water pollution.
Eg:- acid rain , mining
How to avoid water pollution ?
 Rivers should not be used for washing
clothes or bathing animals
 Harvesting of water to meet water
requirements
 Dams and embankments must be created
 The rivers must not be contaminated
 In rivers the dead bodies should not
thrown
