  • 1. What are they, and how do we use them? Social Networks
  • 2. What is a social network?  Any assembly of 2 or more people with a common interest or need  Offline: Can be a church, civic organization, class  Online: Connected via technology, seemingly endless possibilities
  • 3. Today’s presentation compares:  Facebook  Twitter  LinkedIn  Pinterest  Instagram  YouTube  Google plus  Blogs
  • 4. Facebook  Informal  Posts, friends, likes  Good for stories, pictures, communications  Gives insight into your life
  • 5. Twitter  Tweets limited to 140 characters  Can be personal or professional  Allows networking among similar interests  Allows individual audiences for tweets  Includes “hash tags” which perform specialized search of tweets and “lists” which lets you follow relevant people.
  • 6. LinkedIn  Job and Industry related  Good for looking for jobs, researching companies  Networking  Includes “groups” where you can comment with others who have similar professional interests  Gives you an opportunity to become an “expert”
  • 7. Pinterest  Informal, photo based  Easy to share links, photos, websites  Allows you to find others with similar interests  Create boards with specific topics  Boards can be public, allow for repinning by others
  • 8. Instagram  Informal, photo based  Limits photos to a square shape  Includes “hashtags” sharing content  Takes ordinary photo and makes it dazzling  Can easily share photos through Facebook or Twitter as well as own Instagram account
  • 9. YouTube  Online videos, usually 10 min or less in length  Easy to search and share on the site  Free to upload and store videos with account  Can follow others with common interests
  • 10. Google Plus  Posts can be sent to limited audience using “circles”  Easy integration with other Google based products  Includes hangouts, which allow for video conferences for up to 10 users, as well as On Air, which allows unlimited viewers and archiving
  • 11. Blogs  Online journaling  Best way to promote your strengths to an audience  Dynamic, allows for comments and easy updates  Can provide subscriptions so notifications can be sent with new posts
  • 12. Bottom line on social networks  There are many, many social networks  Identify your needs and interests, and find the network which helps you to communicate this  Maintain separate identities for different networks  Separate public from private life
