  TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Group work
  SKILLS: Speaking (pronunciation)


AIM
   •    To revise simple vocalic sounds by matching sounds with words.
   •    To revise the pronunciation of common words which are often
        mispronounced.
    .

PHONETIC AREA
  • Simple vocalic sounds (i:, ɪ, ʊ, u:, ɜ:, ə, e, ɑ:, ʌ, æ, ɔ:, ɒ).

TASK
  • Playing Snap! in groups (3 or 4 players).


PREPARATION AND MATERIALS
  • Make a copy of the word cards per group.
  • Make a copy of two sets of phonetic symbols per group (12+12).


TIMING
+ 15 minutes.


PROCEDURE

   •    Divide the class into groups of three or four students. Students sit in a circle.
   •    Give each group a pack of word cards and a pack of two sets of phonetic
        symbols. Each pack is shuffled.
   •    Students place the cards face down in two different piles: phonetic symbols
        are placed on the right and word cards on the left.
   •    Students take it in turns to pick up a word card and a phonetic symbol card
        for everybody in the group to see: if the word matches the sound represented
        by the symbol the students will race to slam the table and shout ‘Snap!’. The
        player who slams last takes the word card.
   •    If the word does not match the sound in the phonetic card, the word card will
        be placed in a new pile, and the phonetic card in its original pile.
   •    When all the word cards have been picked, the pile is shuffled again and the
        game continues until the teacher says.
   •     The player with fewer cards at the end will win the game.


              •   If a player shouts a wrong ‘Snap!’, they will keep the word card.

LEVEL: Intermediate (B1) TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Group work SKILLS: Speaking (pronunciation) AIM • To revise simple vocalic sounds by matching sounds with words. • To revise the pronunciation of common words which are often mispronounced. . PHONETIC AREA • Simple vocalic sounds (i:, ɪ, ʊ, u:, ɜ:, ə, e, ɑ:, ʌ, æ, ɔ:, ɒ). TASK • Playing Snap! in groups (3 or 4 players). PREPARATION AND MATERIALS • Make a copy of the word cards per group. • Make a copy of two sets of phonetic symbols per group (12+12). TIMING + 15 minutes. PROCEDURE • Divide the class into groups of three or four students. Students sit in a circle. • Give each group a pack of word cards and a pack of two sets of phonetic symbols. Each pack is shuffled. • Students place the cards face down in two different piles: phonetic symbols are placed on the right and word cards on the left. • Students take it in turns to pick up a word card and a phonetic symbol card for everybody in the group to see: if the word matches the sound represented by the symbol the students will race to slam the table and shout ‘Snap!’. The player who slams last takes the word card. • If the word does not match the sound in the phonetic card, the word card will be placed in a new pile, and the phonetic card in its original pile. • When all the word cards have been picked, the pile is shuffled again and the game continues until the teacher says. • The player with fewer cards at the end will win the game. • If a player shouts a wrong ‘Snap!’, they will keep the word card.
