Audrey Zibelman's presentation from America’s Sustainable Future: How U.S. Cities Are Making Energy Work, an invitational conference of public-private partnership efforts from U.S. cities pursuing innovative energy management and smart grid initiatives. The assembled leaders in industry, research and policy-making will explore the diverse energy strategies emerging in Philadelphia and across the United States.

A Smart Grid is an electrical grid that uses information and communications technology to gather and act on information, such as information about the behaviors of suppliers and consumers, in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of electricity production and distribution. Just as ICs were used to improve the bandwidth of copper cable, they can also be used to improve the bandwidth of electrical cables. These improvements enable a Smart Grid to more effectively purchase and distribute electricity and provide users with real-time prices including time of day prices.

Electrical Grid is one of the sophisticated systems humanity ever built. New technologies such as IEC 61850 and Europe-wide initiatives to create continent-wide SmartGrid systems makes it more and more complex.
Our latest research was devoted to the analysis of the threat landscape, architecture and implementation of the modern Smart Grid elements, including relay protection, wind and solar energy generation.
It may seem (not) surprising but the systems which manage huge turbine towers and household PhotoVoltaic plants are not only connected to the internet but also prone to many well known vulnerabilities and low-hanging 0-days. Even if these systems cannot be found via Shodan, fancy cloud technologies leave no chances for security.
In this talk, we summarize our practical experience in security assessment of different components of European SmartGrid technologies: from housekeeping and rooftop PV systems to digital substations. We will release new (but responsibly disclosed) vulnerabilities in SmartGrid components, Cloud SCADA technologies as well as new tools for security assessment of SmartGrid industrial protocols.

Smart Grid is an automated, widely distributed energy delivery network characterized by a two-way flow of electricity and information, capable of monitoring and responding to changes in everything from power plants to customer preferences to individual appliances.

Long-Term Fundamentals Intact Though Headwinds Persist
The “Smart Grid” is often described as the “Internet for Electricity” in which will
modernize our aging electricity distribution grids with the goals of reducing excess
energy and incorporating renewable energy sources. Numerous factors are forcing
the outdated energy distribution grids around the world to become ‘smarter’, from
rising energy costs to environmental concerns. That said, three challenges remain:
1) absence of bold incentives as utilities struggle with their return on investment
case, 2) unclear regulatory guidelines, and 3) a lack of standards and international
harmonization.

Direct communication between IoT devices works without central control. The use of expensive gateways is therefore not a prerequisite for IoT. Gateways are inflexible, limited in scaling and an ideal target for hacker attacks. Lemonbeat has reached with this presentation that direct device communication is taken into account in future standard "Web of Things (WoT)". WoT also needs to consider future developments. For example, the self-learning mechanism in the edge area, shown in this lecture.
