 Meeting the needs of a diverse group of students;
some struggling and some need enrichment
 Students dropping out of school

 Big class sizes = less small group instruction
 Lack of time to “get through curriculum”
 Need to narrow the digital divide and develop
21st Century Skills
 Providing "just in time" feedback on student
learning
 Blended learning is any formal
education program in which a student
learns at least in part through online
learning, with some element of
student control over time, place,
path, and/or pace.
 The student learns at least in part in a
supervised brick-and-mortar location
away from home.
 The modalities along each students’
learning path within a course are
connected to provide an integrated
learning experience.
Hiring Technology
Blended learning introduces technology in
a purposeful, strategic way, to help solve
(or at best assist with) some of these
problems. Michael Horn and Heather Staker
call this "hiring technology".
Technology can be "hired" to:
• deliver content (enrich and support)
• instant feedback
• additional practice
• collaborate and communicate with others
• locate information
• present learning in new ways
