The youth of America face many hardships, and these hardships are often characterized by
intersectionality in the increase of difficulty when multiple factors play a role. In many instances
educators and the schools are often the first if not only advocate for a student therefore
recognizing issues in the student s lives is of the highest priority. Examples of hardships faced by
students are low socioeconomic status and its effect on educational achievement (Spring, 2016),
the personal development of the child including the effects by prejudices and racism on the ability

In recent years a discussion regarding education has increasingly emphasized teachers role in
promoting student academic growth through personalism. Phillippo explains personalism as,
policies that ask teachers to develop individual relationship with students at a presumed level for
student achievement (2012, p. 441). Urban schooldistricts have promoted these policies by
converting larges schools into smaller schools. Research on student teacher relationships generally
supports policies of personalism (Phillippo, 2012, p. 441). Students who have a professional
relationship with their teachers tend to be more successful in school. This challenges us to consider
how teachers practices directly influence what and how students learn, and what can be done to
support teachers contributions.
Summary of The Study Phillippo conducted this qualitative research study over a time span of a
year and thirty four months. She wanted to investigate how students from non dominant groups
responded to teacher personalism. Data shows that policies of personalism do promote student
teacher relationships, however; tension arose when the participants felt that teacher personalism
was threatening their privacy or agency (Phillippo, 2012, p. 441). Culture and social experiences
contributed to the way students perceived personalism and it constrained the participants trust
toward their teachers.

Article Review: The Rise and Fall of the Oslo Accords
According to an apocryphal story, Pope John Paul once said that he believes there are two possible
solutions to the Arab Israeli conflict, the realistic and the miraculous. The realistic being divine
intervention, and the miraculous being a voluntary agreement by both parties. On September 13th,
1993, it looked like the miraculous had happened when the Oslo Accords were signed by Prime
Minister Rabin and PLO Chairman Arafat on the White House South Lawn. However, the
objectives of the accords were never fully implemented and the Palestinians remain stateless.
Further steps toward peace, including Oslo II and Camp David, have fallen short of the goals of
both sides. In the book International Relations of the Middle East the chapter titled The Rise and
Fall of the Oslo Peace Process details the slow process of the formation of the Oslo accords, as
well as attempts at implementation and the fall of the Declaration of Principles. The author
outlines the events between 1990 and 2001 and makes the argument that Oslo failed because: (1)
it had a bad foundation, (2) the accords did not account for the core issues of the conflict, (3) Israel
did not complete of their side of the agreement, (4) Palestinian violence, (5) Israeli West Bank

The Violets by Gwen Harwood was written during the late 1960s and was published in the
anthology Selected Poems in 1975. As we know, Harwood s poems explore philosophical and

I split my food shopping between a suburban enclave in Franklin, TN and my parent s country
house in Columbia, TN. There are a multitude of lifestyle discrepancies between suburban and
country living, and I suspected that this would be evident in the retail food options offered.
Columbia grocery stores are either large big box grocers or small regional stores. These stores
historically service more conventional food options. Franklin s larger and more affluent
population allows for more diversity in alternative and health food stores. I chose to observe a
local Kroger Grocery Store in Columbia, and contrasted that shopping experience with Sprouts
Farmer s Market in Franklin. The separate shopping experiences elucidated that retail food
options are contingent on the expectations, comprehension and financial flexibility of the
customers and the stores. I visited the Kroger Grocery Store around eight on Sunday morning.
The patron demographic was primarily older than 55 and African American. The store has
provided groceries for the community for at least fifteen years. The store was clean and
organized, but there was a slight dingy appearance that comes with older stores. The store has
been remodeled and remerchandised, but the dark lighting and worn floors disclose the stores true

Oh, it has been a month. So much has happened. A couple hundred miles into our trip, we looked
