The Devil In The White City Essay
The late 19th century, the Gilded Age, was seen as a prosperous and golden era for America. Yet,
underneath the gilded landscape, lay a foundation of corruption and violence. Europe saw America as
a wealthy nation lacking elegance and grace (PBS). However, the close of the 19th century and the
beginning of the 20th century would play host to the 1893 Chicago World s Fair (The Fair) or
otherwise known as, The Columbian Exposition. The Fair would prove the Europeans wrong; the
World s Fair would define America as a country rich in innovation and culture. The Exposition
utilized burgeoning technology, business ventures and societal reforms to create an utopia that would
captivate and influence the world for six months. Thus, to a larger extent, ... Show more content on

They became active in participating and forming charities as well as advocating for progressive
reforms. In addition, urbanization in the late 19th century allowed women to play a bigger role in
society. As evidenced in Larson s novel, The Devil In The White City, women contributed to the
economy and participated in the workforce. They sought work as typewriters, stenographers,
seamstresses, and weavers (Larson 11). No longer were young women relegated to the house. Women
began to advocate for ideas that they believed in: Elizabeth Cady Stanton argued in favor of divorce.
Clarence Darrow advocated free love (Larson 12). The Columbian Exposition took advantaged of the
flourishing role of women outside the home. A Board of Lady Managers governed alongside the
World s Columbian Commission. Furthermore, Burnham decided that the Woman s Building, which
was to be part of the Court of Honor, was to be designed by a woman. The job was given to twenty
one year old female architect Sophia Hayden (Larson 120). Hayden was chosen to design a building
that would be shown to the whole world. Moreover, she was not picked because of social connections
or money, she was chosen purely on merit. The Exposition showcased the burgeoning role of women
in society by allowing women to play a vital role in the

Engaging The Adult Learner For Adult Learners
Engaging the Adult Learner
Jeffery Collins

Dr. Gibson Engaging the Adult Learner
Engaging adults during the learning process is an action that encompasses the use of skills to conquer
their concentration and interest. The engagement is performed to ensure the adult learners will
immediately identify with the information and the objective of the teaching. Once the identification
and objectivity is formed learning is able to proceed. Therefore, the engagement process for adult
learners must be unique and display sensitivity in an effort to achieve learning. Moreover, it is
necessary for adults to know their efforts put towards lifelong learning will have meaningful value
later.
Engaging
The overreaching goal of engagement during the instructional process is to achieve learning (J.J Keller
Associates, n.d.). Learning is the process by which a new skillset or information is acquired through
review, practical exercise, and experience to name a few producing understanding or skillfulness
(Merriam Webster, n.d.). In an effort to facilitate learning during engagement of the adult learner,
considerations should be applied and adjusted if needed to the presentation of the material which
contributes to optimal learning. Optimal learning for the adult provides for engagement and allows
retention of knowledge to transpire which is impacted by the training approach of the instructor
(Kelly, 2006). The instructor s teaching

Pros And Cons Of South Carolina
South Carolina, a state with plenty of history and marshland was actually not discovered until a while
after North America had been founded. In fact, Virginia was colonized almost sixty years before South
Carolina was. However, European countries had beforehand attempted to colonize this area. In 1521
Francisco Gordillo, of Spain, sailed to the Carolina coast, he did not try to settle the area, but he did
attempt to enslave the natives and send them to the Caribbeans. To have settled the area, would mean
to have built a lasting community that can live on it s own. Soon after, Lucas Vasquez de Ayllón
brought 600 settlers to try and colonize the area. However they ran into many problems such as:
weather, sickness, low food supplies, and hostility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Notice how in Document B it mentions; The land of South Carolina for a hundred or a hundred and
fifty miles back is flat and woody; intersected with many large rivers, . Although, from this portion of
the document, South Carolina seems to be a nice place to settle, but this also had quite a few
disadvantages. The flat land in the Carolinas, offered no protection to the settlers., Ssure, the land
would be great for farming, but there is no protection for them from the natives or any animals. Just
like in the saying: In war, it s better to have the higher ground , tells that the land wouldn t offer
offensive assist either. Also, from the same quote, it states that there are many large rivers , these
rivers could easily have brought forth animals that posed a great threat to the settlers. Speaking about
animals, in Document C it is mentioned that there are endless Numbers of Panthers, Tygers, Wolves,
and other Beasts of Prey, . This shows that the animal life is always active, and that there are many
animals hunting Beasts of Prey such as deer. This was an advantage, because it allowed food, and a
disadvantage, because the vicious animal hunted in the night, keeping the settlers always on their

Comparison Of Genesis, The Gospel, And Theistic Evolution
Genesis, the Gospel, and Theistic Evolution
Introduction
Humans have asked questions about their origin and their purpose on earth for eons. The Bible tells
humans that God created them and explains their purpose. However, since the Renaissance, humanism
answers questions about origins by naturalistic means and science has been redefined in the process.
Most institutions of higher education and many individuals have adopted the naturalistic theory of
evolution to explain human origin without considering its effects on faith. In contrast to prevailing
thought at Goshen College, a literal six day creation is foundational to the Gospel message.
Combining evolution and Christianity makes one s faith less logical and opens one s ... Show more

Some theistic evolutionists prefer to be called evolutionary creationists. Most of the following
arguments against theistic evolution could also be applied to any combination of Christianity and
macroevolution (i.e. bacteria to human evolution), irregardless of its label.
Naturalism or Christianity as a Foundation for a System of Ethics
Theistic evolution meshes two worldviews, naturalism and Christianity, and each worldview lays a
foundation for a system of ethics and morality. Let us first examine more closely the foundation laid
by naturalism. Naturalism deifies chance. Random chance is responsible for life as we know it. In The
Beak of the Finch, evolutionist Jonathan Weiner writes, Natural selection leads to evolution. He
further explains that for natural selection to occur, the organisms most suited to their environment will
survive (1995, p. 128). The best adapted organisms are more likely to pass on their genetic
information while the less well adapted lose out in the great battle of life. Such a view of origins
establishes by extrapolation a moral and ethical foundation. If humans are only products of chance
evolution, they will naturally follow the instincts that have been ingrained in them for millions of
years. They will pass on their genetic information to as many offspring as possible. Because they have
gained great intelligence and

Why Did The Comanche Tribes Gain Their Power
The Comanche were one of the most powerful Indian tribes that America has ever seen. They stopped
the Spanish from expanding to the north and farther into America. However they weren t always that
way. S.W. Gwynne compared them to a young, bullied boy who grew into a strong, vengeful man.
There were quite a few different factors that made the Comanche evolve into this powerhouse in the
west. The Comanche were able to hold this power for some time, that is, until things took a turn for
the worse, and they were forced to surrender and their power was gone. Before exploring how the
Comanche gained their power, one must look into the history of the Comanche tribe. The word comes
from a Ute word meaning anyone who wants to fight me all the time. The Comanche were originally
part of the Shoshone group, but 10,000 members left after they were introduced to horses. They
moved to the Texas and Oklahoma region. They chose that land specifically for the buffalo population.
This land they settled in was called Comancheria. Part of that land included the Llano Estacado, a
plateau in Texas and New ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the most well known uses of the Comanche power is raiding. Over the time of their power,
there is an estimation of 20,000 captives taken by the Comanche tribes. The Comanche had a process
when it came to their raids. Adult males and newborns to the age of two would be killed. Children
from the age of three to ten would be taken as captives. Women would normally be raped and
sometimes killed. Once the Comanche realized they had low fertility rates, they started to take the
women as captives in order to raise their populations. The captives were also used as slaves to take
care of the livestock. The Comanche would do horrendous things to their captives and those they were
raiding. Examples are torture, gang rape, scalping,

Cannibalism And Ansazi Civilization Summary
The key or lead figure and researcher for the Cannibalism and Anasazi Civilization , was Dr. Christy
Turner (1933 2013). Dr. Turner was an anthropologist, who also taught classes at ASU (Arizona State
University). When Dr. Turner passed away in July of 2013 ASU made a touching statement on their
former employee, Turner was a prolific and influential researcher for more than 40 years. (ASU: In
memory) ASU also stated Dr. Turner had, His broad interests spanned the world and all four fields of
anthropology: physical anthropology, archaeology, linguistics and sociocultural anthropology. (ASU:

Dr. Christy Turner is known for unveiling the acts of cannibalism that had taken place in the Anasazi
civilization. According to an article in the LA Times, Dr. Turner had looked over 76 sites previously
excavated in 1893. These sites had shown signs of violence and possibly cannibalism. According to
Dr. Turner 38 out of the 76 sites, majority in the 90 mile radius from the Four Corners area,
approximately 286 people had been butchered and eaten. (LA Times:
http://articles.latimes.com/1998/dec/20/local/me 55814/2 ) Dr. Turner had a hard time due to the fact
that no one wants to believe that someone could do that to another person. Especially, from the Hopi
nation. The Hopi nation stated, arguing that the claim of cannibalism is a slanderous stain on their
ancestors. (LA Times:

This would have been a good money maker for him and his family, and making money was a big deal
in the culture of these families. Since this conflicted with the class meeting time on Saturday, he
thought about dropping out of the class. Mr. Escalante showed Pancho how he could go beyond
merely fixing cars. One of the ways this was done was through showing Pancho technology that
designed cars. Mr. Escalante told him that he could go to college and make more money designing
cars. Mr. Escalante also took Pancho on an eye opening drive. When Pancho had to make a decision
about which way to go, he yelled go right, go right . Mr. Escalante continued straight and replied all
you see is the turn; you don t see the road ahead . When Jaime Escalante first agreed to teach at the
school, he was expecting to teach computer science. He arrived on the first day of school to find that
there were no computers in the school due to lack of funding. Since he could not teach that class, he
ended up teaching math. Mr. Escalante himself had a struggle with the economical culture within his
family. He chose to teach, which was a low paying job in that neighborhood. He could have found a
better job which paid more, but he chose to teach these students because he believed in them.

To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis Essay
Racism is a part of human nature; everyone judges their surroundings and the people living in it
through a secret lens. Since the beginning of time racism has occurred, but during the Great
Depression this lens was most clear to all. This goes hand in hand with the story of To Kill a
Mockingbird , written by Harper Lee. This book is based on Lee s childhood during the Depression.
Some of the characters in the story are portrayed in her actual life; Atticus is based off her father who
was also a lawyer, Dill was in reference of her friend Truman Capote, and Jean Louise is referring to
Lee herself telling the story of her life experiences (Baddeley). Throughout the novel, Lee expresses
the events that went on around her during the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only do Lee s accomplishments for the book interpret ethos, within the novel there are quotes that
illustrate credibility. One speech, in particular, is the one Atticus gives in trail while talking to Mayella
Ewell about tempting a negro . Atticus stated, She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did
something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man (Lee 272). By stating this in front
of the jury, it shows his authority over the people to pull their attention to the situation at hand; along
with the ethos used in that statement, Atticus uses emotion to make the jury feel the pain. Pathos is yet
another appeal Harper Lee incorporated to allure the audience to understand what she went through
when she was younger.
Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird , Lee applies pathos to encourage the readers to feel the emotions
she faced during her childhood. Harper Lee tells the story through Jean Louise s standpoint, a young
girl living in the time of the Depression. By doing this, the readers see more of an innocent
perspective and observe the emotions Jean and the people withstand, midst the Depression to
emotionally provoke the reader to feel bad for what they went through. One event in particular that
draws in the reader is the final speech made by Atticus at the end of the trial against Tom Robinson.
Atticus mentions guilt and pity within this final hearing to expose to the people why the crime was
committed. He chooses to pull the jury and

I remember it like it was yesterday, running frantically down the worn streets of a city in France with
my friends Phil and Louise from the IYSO. I could feel the warm breeze hitting my face, the blur of
colors that were houses and shops, and the bright blue sky with a hot orange sun blinding me and
painting my skin with sweat. We were on a mission to find the nearest bathroom and quick. About an
hour before our mission began and we were scouring the streets of some city in France, we had been

needed toilets. Up a hill we found the magnificent yet disgusting bathroom that ,sadly, had only two
room/stalls. Louise and Phil went into each leaving me to wait outside in the boiling sun. I waited
outside forever until Louise finally got out of there. I rushed in the room right after her not reading the
warning sign that was in English saying to wait one minute before entering the stall. I was too busy to
worry about signs since my bladder was about to explode. SLAM! The large, metal door closed loudly
behind me making my jump. CLICK! A pipe on the floor turned on and began spraying cold water. I
decided that now was the perfect time to leave and turned to the door attempting to opening it but after
many tries at turning the handle, realizes that it was locked. I turned around once more to find that
three more pipes had begun spraying water. The room became dark as the lights shut off leaving me to

Benito Cereno
In her article entitled Black Masks: Melville s Benito Cereno , Jean Fagan Yellin says that when
Benito Cereno, Herman Melville s tale of slave revolt, appeared in 1855, it made use of Negro
stereotypes already standard in American fiction (Yellin 678). Captain Amasa Delano is characterized
as the typical Yankee man. Yellin elaborates on this by analyzing his self important, authoritarian
persona, observing that he is investigating the strange ship, self righteously expounding the doctrine of
work, officiously planning to manage affairs on the San Dominick, proudly resentful of any implied
social slight, and in no way averse, after helping the distressed Spaniard, to totting up the price he
expects to be paired for his trouble. He smugly believes himself the peculiarly favored child of
Providence (Yellin 682). When we view him in contrast with Cereno, an aristocratic European, Delano
can now be assessed as representation of the idealistic New World Man or the typical American white
man, meaning he is seen as democratic, compassionate, generous, capable of decisive action, although
blind to evil and unable to learn from his experience (Yellin 682). This is best exemplified in his views
of the black slaves on the San Dominick. His assumptive thinking is prevalent in the story because
throughout his initial exploration of the San Dominick, he buys into the illusion that what is happening
upon the ship is not deviating from reality. The presentation of black slaves as

Review Of Reconstruction And The Ride
Reconstruction and The Ride Media Journal by Nicholas Janković 8/10/14
In March 2008 and April 2012, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) released robust television
advertisements which investigated the welfare of motorcyclists on Australian roads. The directors of
these advertisements are stressing for motorcyclists to ride at the appropriate speed limit in order to
decrease the risks of a collision and to be aware of their vulnerability and the risks they face every
time they ride on the road. The directors also express the concern at the fact that some riders aren t
wearing the protective clothing while riding. The TAC addresses it perfectly fair that motorcyclists are
permitted to obey the speed limit. TAC also make it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This numerical data shows that 17% of the road toll in 2013 were caused by motorcycle collisions. As
promoted in the television advertisements, motorcycles are urged to decrease their speed. In 2013,
43% of motorcycle deaths occurred due to the driver exceeding the legal speed limit. Motorcyclists
are encouraged to reduce their travel speed by 5km per hour in order to reduce road trauma. Speeding
over a minor amount of speed of 5km per hour, can still determine the difference between a close call
and a serious accident.
These advertisement adopt a cautious and fearful tone when outlining the welfare of motorcyclists on
our roads. The aim of the advertisement is to increase the welfare of motorcyclists. The strong opinion
enforced by the directors, convinces a broad number of Australian motorcyclists that lowering their
travel speed can be the difference between life and death. Motorcyclists become aware of the fact that
obeying the legal speed limit is absolutely essential for their own welfare. In the advertisement The
Ride , riders aren t wearing the appropriate clothing needed when operating a motorcycle. Motorcycle
clothing manufactures will want to act immediately and decisively in order to advertise their products
to encourage those customers to purchase appropriate protective gear. The demand for motorcycle
clothing is a benefit for those manufactures as sales for protective gear are likely to increase.
The Reconstruction advertisement has placed a

How can a single family tame frankly very savage animals? No formal training, limited resources, and

they got the rope around the donkey s neck, he carelessly tried to dash away briskly because he was

With that in mind, it is apparent then that relying on the US for military assistance in the event of a

One extraordinary example is the incredible Jonas Salk who created a vaccine against influenza. He
didn t take advantage of his discovery, all the contrary; he made it available for everyone saving
countless human lives. In addition, there is the great Irena Sendler. She was a person who changed for
good the destiny of many people during War World II. She smuggled around 2500 Jewish children to a
safe place and provided them with all the necessary things for them to survive.

Rank s Analytical Tool for Advertising
1.) Rank s easy to use, analytical tool is called the intensify/downplay model, and its goal is to help
you to become more critical and analytical receivers. It defines and gives examples of four major
persuasive strategies and six associated tactics that are often used by persuaders today. (Larson, 2007
page 31) Ranks major strategy is to either intensify certain aspects of the product, cause or candidate.
His other strategy is to downplay certain aspects of their brand, cause or candidate. (Larson, 2007

intensify the weak points of the opposition, downplay their own weak points, and downplay the good
points of the opposition. The tactics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

3. Kenneth Burke is known for the knowledge of human symbolic behavior. He was associated with
many narrative theories. He focused on language as it is used to persuade people to an action, and
defined persuasion as the use of language as a symbolic means of inducing cooperation beings that by
nature respond to symbols. (Burke, 1970, Grammar, p. 43) This active cooperation is induced by what
he called identification which is very similar to Aristotle s common ground and our use of co creation
(Larson, 2007, p. 127) According to Burke, identification develops through the linguistic of sharing
what he called sub stances. He had divided the word into its prefix, sub meaning beneath and stances
meaning places. Burke noted that these sub stances or places emerge in the words we use to define
things, persons and issues. Kenneth Burke uses common ground by physical things like for example
branded clothing. According to Larson, Burke indicates that, all words have emotional shading and
reveal the feelings, attitudes, values, and judgment of the user. For example, he uses the word
manipulate which can potentially carry a negative meaning by changing people s minds.

Conference Reflection Paper
During the week of May 25, I had the privilege to attend a conference in Washington D.C. called
NCORE, the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity. Conference topics ranged from police
brutality, mass incarceration, Ferguson to moving towards identity after liberation. Since I am an
African American, I felt that it was expected of me to attend conferences that only relate to my people
and my identity. To stray away from the expected , I decided to dedicate one day to learning about

Before we go into this, we have to understand the difference between the foreigner and the American.
When Muslims immigrate to the US, they are faced with the constant stares of onlookers who are
confused of what they are, where they come from, and when are they leaving. As you can tell,
Americans have always seen Muslims as the other , but tensions intensified after the 9/11 attacks. The
9/11 attacks brought Muslim culture to the forefront. Many people started performing hate crimes
against Muslims and Islamic nations. The American government has sanctioned surveillance and
investigations into Islamic nations in order to prevent another 9/11 attack. The government has
perpetuated this hatred towards Muslims on the basis that since all terrorists are Muslims, all Muslims
must be terrorists. Furthermore, Americans have this idea that Muslims should apologize for the 9/11
attacks. The entire Muslim culture was not responsible for 9/11. Although it seems to be easy to point
the finger at one group of people, it becomes difficult when you are blaming a group of people on one
person s actions. If Americans expect an apology for Muslims, all whites should be prepared to
apologize to blacks for slavery. The apology concept is complete ludicrous. If you believe that all
Muslims are terrorists, this judgment makes the statement that all blacks are criminals true. If either
one are true, how do we explain Barack Obama and Farah Pandith. In addition, airport customs have
used the 9/11 attacks as an excuse for random security checks of Muslims. This promotes an almost
majority rule of widespread racial profiling of Muslims. On the airport, there are numerous customs
checkpoints for Homeland Security that takes a minimum of 2 hours to catch your plane. Americans

There has been talk about the decriminalization of marijuana for many years, and it is a very

this kind of trend. I consider myself one of the people that have been influenced by dieting. Before, I
am not having problems in eating any kind of food I like. But when I gained weight and when the time
comes that I m being teased by my friends that I m getting fat, I thought I really have to start dieting. I
realized that maybe being totally aware of what s in today is making me very conscious of my figure.
When it comes to buying accessories like bags, shoes, jewelries etc., I m trying to be more fashionable
but still applying my practicality as always. Though I know that branded things had always been the
center of attention of everybody, I believe that I can still have the things that are in today without

The Holy Quran, Containing the Written Word of the...
The holy Quran is the highest authority in Islam. It contains the exact words of god written by his
prophet mohammed. Muslims rely on the Sunnah, the saying and actions, of a prophet. This sunnah is
an idea, in the words of God written by Muhammad s deeds. They were recorded in what are called

said to his companions, in his teachings. Numbers 1 20 are from Volumes 1 2, and have been quoted
from Riyadh Us Saleheen. Volumes 3 4 were recorded by An Nawawi s Forty Hadith. The basic
message of Islam can be summed up in the arabic expression La ilaha illa Allah , which translates to
No god but Allah: Muhammad is the prophet of Allah. The word Islam means submission, a muslim is
someone who submits to God. In submitting to god, muslims must accept the 5 pillars, also known as
the five pillars of Islam. The first pillar is muslims have to proclaim their belief in one god. Further,
they accept that God has revealed his message to Mohammed. Muslims honor many prophets
including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. To the Muslims, Mohammed is their most important prophet,
even though they honor Muhammad, they do not worship him as a God. The second pillar is prayer.
Muslims are expected to pray 5 times a day and face toward the holy mecca. The third pillar of Islam

Structural Functionalist Theory Vs Conflict Theory
There are many, different sociological theories on how society works in America. Two of the major
theories are known as Structural Functionalism Theory and the Conflict Theory. The structural
functionalism theory states that society is a system filled with different subsections that provide
specific functions in keeping society in order. While the conflict theory implies that society is in a
state of conflict because of the competition for limited resources. Functionalists conclude that the
interconnected systems help maintain social equilibrium in society. Conflict theorists, however, view
society as a competition, and social conflicts are due to limited resources, inequality, and power. Both
theories provide different perspectives on how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Society is the human body and all the different subsections are the organs that keep the body running
smoothly. These subsections are believed to be necessary to keep society functioning properly.
Religion, education, family, the political system, and economy are just some of the larger parts of this
system that is working to keep society in order. It is believed that in times of social revolution the
social equilibrium is lost or becomes unbalanced. The theory of structural functionalism seems to
focus on more of the social order and stability in society, while Conflict theory focuses more on social
change and conflict itself. Conflict theorist use inequality of social class to explain phenomena like
wars, poverty, discrimination, and domestic violence. They say that people of power and wealth are
the ones that have attributed to the development of inequality over time. For example, a person of
power may suddenly realize their extent of power and do whatever it takes to maintain that power no
matter who or what group it affects in the long run, giving conflict theorist all the reason to believe
that social class is what can cause conflict. Now, even though both theories have different perspectives

The Two Accounts of Creation in Genesis
When God began to create heaven and earth, and the earth then was welter and waste and darkness
over the deep and God s breath hovering er the waters, God said, Let there be light (The Hebrew Bible
94). This is how readers have always started out studying the Bible. Little did they know there was an
entirely different account of creation just a little ways down from the first account they see in Genesis.
So, is there really two different accounts of God creating the Earth in the Bible? Some people believe
yes, others believe, no. Throughout this essay I will be taking a deeper look into the two accounts of
creation by comparing and contrasting the time periods, accounts of vegetation, and the animal life
that God created. The Bible can be a tricky piece of literature to read, but I am going to break it down
to view the accounts in a more in depth view.
In the beginning of Genesis we are introduced to God and he is beginning to make the Earth as we
know it today. The first book of Genesis discusses the way God just had to speak and his words would
bring life to the planet. Genesis 1 takes us on a journey through all six days of creation. Throughout
the six days God manages to create the heavens and the earth, the sky, land, stars, all the creatures that
live in the water, and all the creatures that inhabit the land. Genesis 2 starts out telling us about what

Bosnia was still trying to create a multiethnic state, but the political institutions already supported
ethnic partition in the government. As asserted by McMahon and Western, Although Bosnia professes
to seek the creation of a unified multi ethnic state, its political institutions support ethnic partition at

levels, but they were still trying to create a diverse society at the same time. Ethnic partition in the
government was also supported by the nationalist parties in Bosnia. As advocated by Black, The

wanted to maintain the ethnic partition of the country. The result of the election was a new three

Analysis Of Samuel Taylor Coleridge s Kubla Khan
Experts widely regard Samuel Taylor Coleridge as one of the few major leaders of British
Romanticism. His poems, both individual works and collaborations with another Romantic leader,
William Wordsworth, are proof of this. His works incorporated ideas that are often found in Romantic
poetry, such as a reverence for nature, emphasis on emotion and imagination over reason and logic,
and other themes that contradicted thinkers of the Age of Reason. Coleridge assisted in the change
from Enlightenment ideals favoring rationality and deduction to a thinking with your heart style.
Coleridge had a strange childhood as the last of ten children and largely isolated from the world, and
therefore had few companions other than the books he so loved to read. This exposed him to the ideas
that eventually made him into the renowned Romantic poet readers view him as today. Coleridge s
upbringing in 18th century England and close association with other poets, including the co authoring
of Lyrical Ballads with William Wordsworth, helped form his worldview and poetic style, evidenced
in his poem Kubla Khan, which in turn shaped English Romanticism and the way readers would look
at poetry forever.
One of the largest influences on Coleridge was his unusual adolescence and the people he met, as a
child and later on. It is said best as, For Coleridge, childhood is the shaper of adult destiny
(Gradesaver). The youngest child of ten, he had his father die when he was not even nine years

necessarily a good direction. Kyle Gunnars stated the following, If you simply remove the
unhealthiest carb sources from your diet, wheat (including whole wheat) and added sugars, then you ll

Lab Report
Physical Properties of Two Types of Solids
SCH3U0
Maggie Liu
Abstract
The purpose of this lab is to study some of the physical properties of two types of solids ionic and
molecular. The samples used are sodium chloride (ionic) and camphor (molecular). The physical
properties studied are odour, hardness, melting point, solubility in water and solubility in 2 propanol.
It is observed that some of the physical properties of sodium chloride are no odours, hard, a high
melting point, soluble in water and insoluble in 2 propanol; some of the physical properties of
camphor are a strong odour, soft, a low melting point, insoluble in water and soluble in 2 propanol. A
few conclusions can be drawn from these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Noted the observations for each solid in both water and 2 propanol.
Observations
|Physical property |Sodium chloride |camphor |
|Odour |No odour |Strong (mint) |
|Hardness |hard |soft |
|Melting point |high |low |
|Solubility in water |soluble |insoluble |
|Solubility in 2 propanol |insoluble |soluble |
Sodium chloride does not have any odours, whereas camphor has a strong mint like smell. It is found
that ionic compounds usually do not have odours because they are solids and the particles are all held
tightly which makes the gas nearly impossible to be released into air and make the smell, however,
many molecular solids do have odours because their particles are not held very tightly and there is
space between the particles. Vapor or gas can be produced and released into air which causes smell.
Sodium chloride is harder than camphor.

dozier hedging
Dozier Hedging Alternatives Forward Market Hedge: Dozier would purchase U.S. dollars under a
forward contract. The contract would obligate Dozier to pay £1,057,500 in exchange for £1,057,500 x
1.4198 $/£ = $1,501,438.50 assuming the transaction was at the quoted 3 month forward rate in
Exhibit 4. Relative to the value of the contract at the current exchange rate, £1,057,500 x 1.4370 $/£ =
$1,519,627.50 Dozier would accepting a reduction in the revenue from the contract of $1,519,627.50
$1,501,438.50 = $18,198.00 or $18,198 / $1,519,627.50 = 1.20% Money Market Hedge: In this case,

Think of this in general as X/Y. So, the money market formula is, in general, (X interest rate Y interest
rate) / (1. + Y interest rate) or, in shorthand, (X Y) /(1 + Y) So if you were using a yen/dollar quote for
the exchange rate, you would have yen rate minus dollar rate divided by one plus dollar rate. Note that
none of this really solves Dozier s problem; but there is a theory that in well functioning markets, the
results from the two formulas should be equal. In other words, it shouldn t make a difference whether
you hedge in the forward market or in the money market. However this theory is based on comparing
apples to apples. Here the apples are the financial instruments whose interest rates we are comparing.
Our interest rate calculation is based on the cost of a UK bank loan to Dozier compared to rate on a
bank CD. The theory works a bit better if you use the Eurodollar rate and the Europound rate in
Exhibit 4, but even these are not precisely similar instruments. However, there is another use for the
formulas. Banks use them in pricing forward contracts! Suppose that we set the two formulas equal to
each other and do some rearrangements using my X/Y approach to stay general and to remind us what
we are doing. We can get the following result, solving for the forward rate: Forward rate = Spot rate x
(1 + X interest rate) / (1 + Y interest rate) Remember the rule is X over Y. When

How is religious conflict at the center of American society? Religion is a vital part of American

lighting (). Although air conditioning is powered by electricity, many urban cities rely on the
combustion of coal for energy (). Combustion of coal emits CO2 and deadly gases into the atmosphere
which leads to Global Warming (). Buildings in urban areas use conventional roofs as their main
aesthetics. Conventional roofs are generally comprised of tar and gravel. On hot summer days,
conventional rooftops can be 27 50°C hotter than the surrounding air temperature. This happens
because the albedo of tar and gravel is extremely low which allows for the sun s energy to be absorbed
instead of reflected (). The increased temperature leads to urban heat islands (). Increasing higher
albedo surfaces on roofs will result in more reflection of solar energy away from the urban areas ().
Rooftops covered in plants, also known as Green Roofs have grown popular tremendously in the last
decade. These rooftops are covered in natural greenery like small trees, bushes, flowers, grass, etc.
Green roofs are cost effective way to solve many problems with global warming in urban areas ().

Analysis
The weaknesses of the story are just too long. It was too broad, and it will make you boring on some
pages. It makes you upset because there s a twist and some words that they used is hard to understand.
Even though there are weaknesses of the story, it will make you be a critical thinker. For the example,
on how s her parents could be find. It is exciting because your expected will not be the same as you
expect at the last part of the story. Although it is a true story, there is a doubt that can possibly form in
your mind because for me, some details are not possible. But all in all, it is beautiful to have read.
IV. Conclusion
Jody was very nice book, a true story life written by Jerry Hulse. This story, make you believe that
family is a family no matter what happen. They faced all the problems even though it is hard, it is
impossible to solve. It will teach you how to forgive someone who did wrong to you. It will make you

The Theme Of Death In The Boat By Alistair Macleod
The Boat is a short story written by Alistair MacLeod in 1968. The story is narrated by a boy when
after he has grown up and become a professor at Midwestern university in Cape Breton, east Canada.
The narrator reflects on how events in his childhood have shaped the man he is today. He speaks about
his family and the cold, frosty fishing community in Nova Scotia they belonged to. There is a somber
tone and a presence of sadness, dismay and death throughout the extract. It is told in the first person,
which allows for the emotions of characters to be expressed the most precise. This way, themes and
symbols of the short story are carried across to the reader better. The narrator recalls his youthful
teenage years as the only son, and youngest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

both father and son to places where they feel incomplete. For the father this place is his room of

Acute Respiratory Syndrome Research Paper
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome: A Lucky Evolution? Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS) was a viral disease that quickly spread China and the world in 2003 to 2004. The corona virus
targeted the respiratory system and killed 10% of people who caught it. By examining articles that
relate to this disease, I have come to the conclusion that SARS was just a One Hit Wonder that was the
result of a lucky evolution because of how and when it happened. The virus only lasted for 2 years,
evolved from bats, and is not likely to happen again in the same way. First of all, SARS was a lucky
evolution because it only lasted for about a year. The first case of SARS was documented on
November 16, 2002 and there have been no known cases since 2004. According to the EDU, a total of
8,098 people worldwide became sick ... Of these, 774 died. The virus disappeared after only about 2
years, and only a 10% fatality rate. If the virus was not a lucky evolution, and was designed to infect
people, then would it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Berkeley University, the ancestor of [SARS was] a bat virus ... SARS is actually divided
into 8 strains, with the 3rd and 4th strains, called SARS 3 and 4, infecting humans. Of the 6 other
strains, 5 of them are carried by bats. Berkley also says, Chinese horseshoe bats . . .are the [common]
carriers of the SARS virus The disease came to humans by way of live animal markets in China,
where the bats were kept in cages and handled by many people. All it took was one of the two human
infecting strains to jump from the bats to one of the handlers, and the disease was set to infect all
whom it came in contact with. Even though bats are a common source of infection, there are several
reasons why the infections rarely become epidemic. The ancestors of the SARS virus had evolved to
infect bats, and when one strain infected humans, it wasn t prepared to infect the human immune

Essay On Profession Of Arms
Human resource Sergeants responsibility for profession of arms is one of the most important values
we have. To better understand the importance of the profession of arms; I will explain the meaning of
profession of arms. The profession includes key factors which are expertise, trust, development,
values, and service. Each factor is what makes profession of arms attainable. One way to excel at the
profession of arms is to do what is best for the United States. We serve the people of the United States
and we are implementing services that we are trained and ready to provide them. Some of which
include protecting the United States and its allies from terrorists to national disasters. We are there for
them and we will support their decisions. The trust factor; not only must we look out for the interest of
the United States but earn their trust as well. Trust is not easily given and we have to put in the effort
to demonstrate that we are there for them.
Development factor involves training and education. Professionals are knowledgeable in their career
and focus on efficiency. We encourage our soldiers to advance in their MOS by going to BLC, ALC
and SLC. Army is also immense on civilian educations and receiving a college degree. Profession of
arms follows the values factor to establish unity and morals. Values ... Show more content on

Having the climate right provides the army to function successfully and effectively. Most units take a
command climate survey to see how the unit as a whole is doing. The soldiers can give their
comments on the actions of the unit to improve the climate overall. For instance, having an NCO who
is not willing to help their soldiers and always belittling them does not benefit the company. Having
those comments input to make effective decisions on how to fix problem to move onto our missions

Nurture Controversy
The biggest controversy in psychology today is whether genetics or one s environment plays a role in
the behavior of the individual. Psychologists have researched and developed different theories to
explain the reason for the way humans think and behave. The behavior of individuals is either
inherited or learned. In my opinion, I believe that nurture plays a big role in the individual s behavior.
Kendra Cherry states, Nurture refers to all the environmental variables that impact who we are,
including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised, our social relationships, and our
surrounding culture (1). People have become who there are because of the environment they were
exposed to in their childhood years. The behavior of people is influenced be the environment that
surrounds them and can changed many times through one s lifetime. People have different

Adults who were raised in a home with both parents usually have better relationships with their love
ones and tend to stay married for a long time. The trend of having both parents in a household most
likely will carry on with their children when they become adults. Some children grow up in abusive
environments and think it is fine to abuse someone or to be abused as a result they end up coming
violent person and commit a violent crime. Marisa Mauro says, In seeing the life patterns, I cannot
help but wonder if these men, now incarcerated, would have led productive lives if their environments
were different (2009). Without the help of counselling services, the abusive and violent behavior will
never end, even if they engage in new relationships. Counselling services may help because anything
that is learned can be modified.
In conclusion, the environment that children live will shape the person who they will become and
whatever is learned from a young age will stick with them for rest of their

  • 2. The Devil In The White City Essay The late 19th century, the Gilded Age, was seen as a prosperous and golden era for America. Yet, underneath the gilded landscape, lay a foundation of corruption and violence. Europe saw America as a wealthy nation lacking elegance and grace (PBS). However, the close of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century would play host to the 1893 Chicago World s Fair (The Fair) or otherwise known as, The Columbian Exposition. The Fair would prove the Europeans wrong; the World s Fair would define America as a country rich in innovation and culture. The Exposition utilized burgeoning technology, business ventures and societal reforms to create an utopia that would captivate and influence the world for six months. Thus, to a larger extent, ... In addition, urbanization in the late 19th century allowed women to play a bigger role in society. As evidenced in Larson s novel, The Devil In The White City, women contributed to the economy and participated in the workforce. They sought work as typewriters, stenographers, seamstresses, and weavers (Larson 11). No longer were young women relegated to the house. Women began to advocate for ideas that they believed in: Elizabeth Cady Stanton argued in favor of divorce. Clarence Darrow advocated free love (Larson 12). The Columbian Exposition took advantaged of the flourishing role of women outside the home. A Board of Lady Managers governed alongside the World s Columbian Commission. Furthermore, Burnham decided that the Woman s Building, which was to be part of the Court of Honor, was to be designed by a woman. The job was given to twenty one year old female architect Sophia Hayden (Larson 120). Hayden was chosen to design a building that would be shown to the whole world. Moreover, she was not picked because of social connections or money, she was chosen purely on merit. • 3. Engaging The Adult Learner For Adult Learners Engaging the Adult Learner Jeffery Collins COLL100 B100 Fall 14 American Military University Dr. Gibson Engaging the Adult Learner Engaging adults during the learning process is an action that encompasses the use of skills to conquer their concentration and interest. The engagement is performed to ensure the adult learners will immediately identify with the information and the objective of the teaching. Once the identification and objectivity is formed learning is able to proceed. Therefore, the engagement process for adult learners must be unique and display sensitivity in an effort to achieve learning. Moreover, it is necessary for adults to know their efforts put towards lifelong learning will have meaningful value later. Engaging The overreaching goal of engagement during the instructional process is to achieve learning (J.J Keller Associates, n.d.). Learning is the process by which a new skillset or information is acquired through review, practical exercise, and experience to name a few producing understanding or skillfulness (Merriam Webster, n.d.). In an effort to facilitate learning during engagement of the adult learner, considerations should be applied and adjusted if needed to the presentation of the material which contributes to optimal learning. Optimal learning for the adult provides for engagement and allows retention of knowledge to transpire which is impacted by the training approach of the instructor (Kelly, 2006). In fact, Virginia was colonized almost sixty years before South Carolina was. However, European countries had beforehand attempted to colonize this area. In 1521 Francisco Gordillo, of Spain, sailed to the Carolina coast, he did not try to settle the area, but he did attempt to enslave the natives and send them to the Caribbeans. To have settled the area, would mean to have built a lasting community that can live on it s own. Soon after, Lucas Vasquez de Ayllón brought 600 settlers to try and colonize the area. • 5. Comparison Of Genesis, The Gospel, And Theistic Evolution Genesis, the Gospel, and Theistic Evolution Introduction Humans have asked questions about their origin and their purpose on earth for eons. The Bible tells humans that God created them and explains their purpose. However, since the Renaissance, humanism answers questions about origins by naturalistic means and science has been redefined in the process. Most institutions of higher education and many individuals have adopted the naturalistic theory of evolution to explain human origin without considering its effects on faith. In contrast to prevailing thought at Goshen College, a literal six day creation is foundational to the Gospel message. Combining evolution and Christianity makes one s faith less logical and opens one s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some theistic evolutionists prefer to be called evolutionary creationists. Most of the following arguments against theistic evolution could also be applied to any combination of Christianity and macroevolution (i.e. bacteria to human evolution), irregardless of its label. Naturalism or Christianity as a Foundation for a System of Ethics Theistic evolution meshes two worldviews, naturalism and Christianity, and each worldview lays a foundation for a system of ethics and morality. Let us first examine more closely the foundation laid by naturalism. Naturalism deifies chance. Random chance is responsible for life as we know it. In The Beak of the Finch, evolutionist Jonathan Weiner writes, Natural selection leads to evolution. He further explains that for natural selection to occur, the organisms most suited to their environment will survive (1995, p. 128). The best adapted organisms are more likely to pass on their genetic information while the less well adapted lose out in the great battle of life. Such a view of origins establishes by extrapolation a moral and ethical foundation. If humans are only products of chance evolution, they will naturally follow the instincts that have been ingrained in them for millions of years. They will pass on their genetic information to as many offspring as possible. Because they have gained great intelligence and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They stopped the Spanish from expanding to the north and farther into America. However they weren t always that way. S.W. Gwynne compared them to a young, bullied boy who grew into a strong, vengeful man. There were quite a few different factors that made the Comanche evolve into this powerhouse in the west. The Comanche were able to hold this power for some time, that is, until things took a turn for the worse, and they were forced to surrender and their power was gone. Before exploring how the Comanche gained their power, one must look into the history of the Comanche tribe. The word comes from a Ute word meaning anyone who wants to fight me all the time. The Comanche were originally part of the Shoshone group, but 10,000 members left after they were introduced to horses. They moved to the Texas and Oklahoma region. • 9. To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis Essay Racism is a part of human nature; everyone judges their surroundings and the people living in it through a secret lens. Since the beginning of time racism has occurred, but during the Great Depression this lens was most clear to all. This goes hand in hand with the story of To Kill a Mockingbird , written by Harper Lee. This book is based on Lee s childhood during the Depression. Some of the characters in the story are portrayed in her actual life; Atticus is based off her father who was also a lawyer, Dill was in reference of her friend Truman Capote, and Jean Louise is referring to Lee herself telling the story of her life experiences (Baddeley). Throughout the novel, Lee expresses the events that went on around her during the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only do Lee s accomplishments for the book interpret ethos, within the novel there are quotes that illustrate credibility. One speech, in particular, is the one Atticus gives in trail while talking to Mayella Ewell about tempting a negro . Atticus stated, She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man (Lee 272). By stating this in front of the jury, it shows his authority over the people to pull their attention to the situation at hand; along with the ethos used in that statement, Atticus uses emotion to make the jury feel the pain. Pathos is yet another appeal Harper Lee incorporated to allure the audience to understand what she went through when she was younger. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird , Lee applies pathos to encourage the readers to feel the emotions she faced during her childhood. Harper Lee tells the story through Jean Louise s standpoint, a young girl living in the time of the Depression. By doing this, the readers see more of an innocent perspective and observe the emotions Jean and the people withstand, midst the Depression to emotionally provoke the reader to feel bad for what they went through. One event in particular that draws in the reader is the final speech made by Atticus at the end of the trial against Tom Robinson. • 12. Benito Cereno In her article entitled Black Masks: Melville s Benito Cereno , Jean Fagan Yellin says that when Benito Cereno, Herman Melville s tale of slave revolt, appeared in 1855, it made use of Negro stereotypes already standard in American fiction (Yellin 678). Captain Amasa Delano is characterized as the typical Yankee man. Yellin elaborates on this by analyzing his self important, authoritarian persona, observing that he is investigating the strange ship, self righteously expounding the doctrine of work, officiously planning to manage affairs on the San Dominick, proudly resentful of any implied social slight, and in no way averse, after helping the distressed Spaniard, to totting up the price he expects to be paired for his trouble. He smugly believes himself the peculiarly favored child of Providence (Yellin 682). When we view him in contrast with Cereno, an aristocratic European, Delano can now be assessed as representation of the idealistic New World Man or the typical American white man, meaning he is seen as democratic, compassionate, generous, capable of decisive action, although blind to evil and unable to learn from his experience (Yellin 682). This is best exemplified in his views of the black slaves on the San Dominick. His assumptive thinking is prevalent in the story because throughout his initial exploration of the San Dominick, he buys into the illusion that what is happening upon the ship is not deviating from reality. The presentation of black slaves as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He focused on language as it is used to persuade people to an action, and defined persuasion as the use of language as a symbolic means of inducing cooperation beings that by nature respond to symbols. (Burke, 1970, Grammar, p. 43) This active cooperation is induced by what he called identification which is very similar to Aristotle s common ground and our use of co creation (Larson, 2007, p. 127) According to Burke, identification develops through the linguistic of sharing what he called sub stances. He had divided the word into its prefix, sub meaning beneath and stances meaning places. Burke noted that these sub stances or places emerge in the words we use to define things, persons and issues. Kenneth Burke uses common ground by physical things like for example branded clothing. According to Larson, Burke indicates that, all words have emotional shading and reveal the feelings, attitudes, values, and judgment of the user. For example, he uses the word manipulate which can potentially carry a negative meaning by changing people s minds. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When Muslims immigrate to the US, they are faced with the constant stares of onlookers who are confused of what they are, where they come from, and when are they leaving. As you can tell, Americans have always seen Muslims as the other , but tensions intensified after the 9/11 attacks. The 9/11 attacks brought Muslim culture to the forefront. Many people started performing hate crimes against Muslims and Islamic nations. The American government has sanctioned surveillance and investigations into Islamic nations in order to prevent another 9/11 attack. The government has perpetuated this hatred towards Muslims on the basis that since all terrorists are Muslims, all Muslims must be terrorists. Furthermore, Americans have this idea that Muslims should apologize for the 9/11 attacks. The entire Muslim culture was not responsible for 9/11. Although it seems to be easy to point the finger at one group of people, it becomes difficult when you are blaming a group of people on one person s actions. If Americans expect an apology for Muslims, all whites should be prepared to apologize to blacks for slavery. The apology concept is complete ludicrous. If you believe that all Muslims are terrorists, this judgment makes the statement that all blacks are criminals true. If either one are true, how do we explain Barack Obama and Farah Pandith. In addition, airport customs have used the 9/11 attacks as an excuse for random security checks of Muslims. This promotes an almost majority rule of widespread racial profiling of Muslims. While the conflict theory implies that society is in a state of conflict because of the competition for limited resources. The Two Accounts Of Creation Melodie Waddell Professor Lydia Postell English 2111 01 7 July 2015 The Two Accounts of Creation in Genesis When God began to create heaven and earth, and the earth then was welter and waste and darkness over the deep and God s breath hovering er the waters, God said, Let there be light (The Hebrew Bible 94). This is how readers have always started out studying the Bible. Little did they know there was an entirely different account of creation just a little ways down from the first account they see in Genesis. So, is there really two different accounts of God creating the Earth in the Bible? Some people believe yes, others believe, no. Throughout this essay I will be taking a deeper look into the two accounts of creation by comparing and contrasting the time periods, accounts of vegetation, and the animal life that God created. The Bible can be a tricky piece of literature to read, but I am going to break it down to view the accounts in a more in depth view. In the beginning of Genesis we are introduced to God and he is beginning to make the Earth as we know it today. The first book of Genesis discusses the way God just had to speak and his words would bring life to the planet. Genesis 1 takes us on a journey through all six days of creation. Throughout the six days God manages to create the heavens and the earth, the sky, land, stars, all the creatures that live in the water, and all the creatures that inhabit the land. • 35. Analysis Of Samuel Taylor Coleridge s Kubla Khan Experts widely regard Samuel Taylor Coleridge as one of the few major leaders of British Romanticism. His poems, both individual works and collaborations with another Romantic leader, William Wordsworth, are proof of this. His works incorporated ideas that are often found in Romantic poetry, such as a reverence for nature, emphasis on emotion and imagination over reason and logic, and other themes that contradicted thinkers of the Age of Reason. Coleridge assisted in the change from Enlightenment ideals favoring rationality and deduction to a thinking with your heart style. Coleridge had a strange childhood as the last of ten children and largely isolated from the world, and therefore had few companions other than the books he so loved to read. This exposed him to the ideas that eventually made him into the renowned Romantic poet readers view him as today. Coleridge s upbringing in 18th century England and close association with other poets, including the co authoring of Lyrical Ballads with William Wordsworth, helped form his worldview and poetic style, evidenced in his poem Kubla Khan, which in turn shaped English Romanticism and the way readers would look at poetry forever. One of the largest influences on Coleridge was his unusual adolescence and the people he met, as a child and later on. Note that none of this really solves Dozier s problem; but there is a theory that in well functioning markets, the results from the two formulas should be equal. In other words, it shouldn t make a difference whether you hedge in the forward market or in the money market. However this theory is based on comparing apples to apples. • 42. Large Urban Cities In America Problem Statement Global Warming is quickly becoming a growing issue for large urban cities in America. As we expand our urban areas with the growing population, cities use more energy for air conditioning, water, and lighting (). Although air conditioning is powered by electricity, many urban cities rely on the combustion of coal for energy (). Combustion of coal emits CO2 and deadly gases into the atmosphere which leads to Global Warming (). Buildings in urban areas use conventional roofs as their main aesthetics. Conventional roofs are generally comprised of tar and gravel. On hot summer days, conventional rooftops can be 27 50°C hotter than the surrounding air temperature. This happens because the albedo of tar and gravel is extremely low which allows for the sun s energy to be absorbed instead of reflected (). The increased temperature leads to urban heat islands (). Increasing higher albedo surfaces on roofs will result in more reflection of solar energy away from the urban areas (). Rooftops covered in plants, also known as Green Roofs have grown popular tremendously in the last decade.
