Momentous Gender Selection
One of life s profound moments is that of a mother s caressing gaze into the eyes of her first born
child. Only a minority of mothers who conceive genetically impaired children face an alternative
world of heartbreak and melancholy.
It s a beautiful thing to conceive life s bundle of joy, and another to conceive a child suffering from
genetic disorders. Inheriting altered genes through autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X linked
dominant and X linked recessive are potential leads to genetic disorders in offspring (Health Direct
Australia, 2014).
Interventions such as Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) have opened up a diverse field of
scientific research, committed to overcoming this biological issue. Over decades of momentous ...

Imbalance of genders occur when one gender is outstanding in number to that of the other gender; for
example, if there were many more males to females. Gender imbalance is calculated by the sex ratio,
that is the ratio of males to females in a population (World Health Organisation, 2015). China and
India are evidence of where gender imbalance has occurred. In both countries, there are specific
customs and cultural stereotypes that are strictly adhered to. China perceive males to be more valuable
than female due to religious beliefs, labour, and financial support; The Chinese have traditionally
preferred sons because of their potential to financially support their parents, carry on the family name,
and lead ancestor worship (Hsu, 2008). India s ideology of male preference is based on the education
of women; women s education is the single most significant factor in reducing son preference (Rohini
Pande, 2006). It s clear that China and India have experienced gender imbalance due to cultural
gender preferences. The American Medical Association argues that gender imbalance is less likely to
happen in the Western world (American Medical Association, 2003

How The Apollo Missions Changed Space Travel
Space is something that we humans are never going to be able to comprehend and understand what it
is exactly. But knowing that still is not going to stop us from trying to know as much about space as
we possibly can. The Apollo missions took that step to reaching greater heights, and landing on our
moon to know more about what it is and what is on it. These missions changed our look on space
travel and what humans can accomplish if we put our minds to it.
The Apollo Program started in 1963 and went all the way through 1972. On January 27, 1967 there
was an accident during the preflight test for Apollo 1. The Astronauts on that flight were named Virgil
Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee. They all lost their lives in a fire on Apollo 1. What
started the fire was an electrical failure in the command module which ignited the inside of the ship
with the Astronauts trapped inside with no way out. (Loff, Sarah)

Robert Wise Essay
The film is named The Sound of music. Robert Wise is the director of the movie and it was released in
1965. It is a classic because it has lasted for many of years and its message will last. It has many
beautiful musical acts that sticks with the viewer. The technical features of the sound of music were
the usage of bright colors. It s opening scene included a lovely green landscape which leads you to the
main character showing that she will be lively. Then when you meet the kids you are greeted with a
dull staircase with and a whistle to show that they are obedient and do not bend the rules. The house is
dull, and the children clothes are also grey showing how out of place Maria is. The film is an

It shows how one person could change a situation in a family and find joy in bad situations. Points of
value would be that the dad should not hold their children back. The dad should let the kids sing.
Another point would be you may think you have your life all figured out but then someone may come
along and change it completely. It emphasized the scenery and beautiful mountains as if a painting

outstanding reviews from multiple sources. Stated by Whitney Williams The magic and charm of

is about feelings. The songs help delivers up beat moods and happiness. They also try to escape limits

highly recommend this movie. All the songs are great, and the viewers would know some of them

Essay about The Renaissance as a Distinct Period of Time
The Middle Ages was a time in history where everyone was faithful to religion as well as others. Also,
in the Middle Ages, people were encouraged to always try their best; they were encouraged to strive
for the highest achievement possible and to never give up. The Renaissance, however, was more
focused on becoming matured and finding a way to be successful at everything one does. During this
era, people strived to become all sided men, also known as; renaissance men. This means they are not
only successful in one type of art but in all types of art, as well as math, science, and literature. The
Renaissance was a distinct period in time that was separated from the Middle Ages and began a new
era.
The writers and thinkers of the fifteenth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They believed that the people of the Middle Ages used religion as an excuse to drink and gain money
and power (Document 5). The Middle Ages was a time where people were more conserved with
education and did not have the curiosities that fell upon those in the Renaissance.
Curiosity of the human body and deeper knowledge about art and literature became two popular areas
throughout the Renaissance. Leonardo daVinci drew beautiful pieces of art that depicted the natural
and realistic human body and it s internal muscle and bone structures. The drawings of the human
body by daVinci, show that he was not afraid to go the distance and have no limits as to how far he
will push himself to understand the human body (Document 6). Leonardo was a true Renaissance
man. In addition, another evidential person who leads a reader towards making the inference that the
Renaissance is a separate era from the Middle Ages, is Johannes Kepler. Johannes Kepler was an
astronomer from Germany that made an observation about people in the Middle Ages that tend to
follow and agree with everything the priests say. Johannes said that with the distinct knowledge of the
Renaissance, people now had their own education and had the power to question what others said or
thought (Document 7).
Education was always existent through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. However, the education
during the Renaissance was extremely different and more widely spread than the education that was

The World Is Changing And The Environment
Introduction
The world is changing and the environment we are living in is becoming very competitive by the day.
Considering the work environment of this changing world, both the employees and employers at the
workplace are facing a lot of risk issues, regarding this rapid change in the economy and society
followed by the overpowering competition. In order to sustain in the business market and meet the
consumer demands, the organizations and the employers are required to come up with new methods
and unbeatable prices of products. Moreover due to the emergence of globalisation, these
organizations are bound to apply cost cutting approach (lower wage approach), which influences the
shifts in workforce composition, labour utilization and labour demand. (Rani, 2000) This shift leads to
what can be defined as labour flexibility . According to Standing (1999), the term can be defined as a
rise in new technologies, development of more complex labour control structures, participation of
labours throughout the world with the help of globalisation.
The more complex definitions and theories of labour flexibility will be discussed later in this essay. I
am writing this essay to portray how labour flexibility has given rise to international human resource
management and how globalization plays a vital role in the emergence of the former two concepts. In
my essay I will first introduce globalization, since it has been a very important topic of discussion in
the international human

Observation In Early Childhood
Observation # 2: Notes: It was 9:45am on Tuesday, October 20th, 2015: The children were taking part
in an art activity. On the piece of paper, each child had a drawn out bubble lettered number one. They
were given each given four popsicle sticks and a small pile of glue. The teacher instructed them to use
the paint brush to spread the glue out inside the number one and then place the popsicle sticks on top.
One two and a half year old girl was working on the craft. She would take the paint brush with her
right hand and hold it with her hold hand. The toddlers held her pointer finger up and gentle put the
brush in the glue. Barely picking up any glue, she would then gently slide the brush inside one area of

Toddler A said excitedly, pointing to the picture of a cow, mooooooo. She giggled and looked at
toddler B. Toddler B pointed to another picture and said, piggeee! She turned the paged gently and
saw a picture of a cartoon horse having breakfast. Eatin caireal, she giggled, wadder. Toddler A spoke
in a high pitched voice, No...Dat no wadder. Mmilkkuh! They both studied the book, but after a few
seconds, Toddler A s attention turned towards me as I sat there observing. Uh, Toddler A said as she
closed the book and tossed it on the ground. She was about to stand up but noticed Toddler B s shoes.
She stood there for a second before becoming angry. She pointed to the shoes, Me mine shoes! Me

The Voices Against War By Thomas Hardy
The Voices Against Wars of Many The voicing of opinions against war was not made common until
around the eighteen hundreds. War was always considered an opportunity for glory and a chance to
prove one s self to his or her fellow soldier and his or her country. However, with the advancement in
technological warfare and physical battle becoming more gruesome, many felt the need to speak out
against the activity of war. Thomas Hardy voices his opinion on the second Boer War through poetry.
The second Boer War witnessed some of the beginnings of more accurate cannons and propelled
explosives, giving South Africa a strong resistance to Great Britain. Wilfred Owen witnessed first
hand of the horrors of World War I with a price of his life. He wrote poetry vividly describing his
treacherous experience on the battlefield. Also Randall Jarrell, served in World War II and used his
experience to write an anti war poem with the imagery of his experience. All of these anti war poems
most be analyzed properly to fully understand how their authors present their message. The
conventions used by Hardy, Owen and Jarrell in their respective anti war poems are the essence of
their messages against the activity of war, and the analysis of the anti war theme.
First, Thomas Hardy uses both imagery and a switch from first to second person to create an anti war
theme in The Man He Killed. By beginning with the imagery of a peaceful and humble setting, Hardy

Tracing Narrative Threads in Life of Pi Essay examples
Tracing Narrative Threads 1) Father s admonitions to stay away from the tiger in the zoo.
During this part of the novel, Pi s father is teaching him a lesson by letting a tiger brutally kill a goat
right in front of him. He is trying to teach Pi to not go near an animal such as tigers because they are
incredibly dangerous. I believe this thread represents the foreshadowing of what is to come for Pi.
When Pi and Ravi s father was telling them about staying away from tigers he said Tigers are very
dangerous. I want you to understand that you are never under any circumstances to touch a tiger, to pet
a tiger, to put your hands through the bars of a cage, even to get close to a cage. Is that clear? (37) This
evidence indicates that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The name Pi is also symbolic because as Pi stated: I was named after a swimming pool (8) The word
Piscine in French translate to swimming pool in English. The significance of his name is because he
spends 227 days in a huge swimming pool (the ocean) fighting for his life.
The thread develops during the novel because as the novel goes on and he s stuck on the lifeboat, Pi
starts to question who Pi really is. When he starts questioning who he is, he finds it hard to learn who
he truly wants to be. The message the author is trying to get across is be true to yourself. 3) Young Pi s
dedication to three religions
As explained in the book, Pi follows three different religions; Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Pi is
extremely interested in all three religions and tries to find himself through religion. Although, he does
not understand why he can t follow all three religions. But he can t be a Hindu, a Christian and a
Muslim. It s impossible. He must choose. (76) This thread represents that he dedicates himself to the
things he believes in and will fight for what he believes in. Even when his family disagreed with his
decision of following all three religions, he still fought for what he believed.
This thread develops during the novel because while he is on the lifeboat Pi starts questioning who
truly he is and wants to be. The young boy who was once dedicated to vegetarianism, which was
rooted in his religion, must make a life changing decision.

Theu.s. Roosevelt And Taft Administrations
Throughout the early 1900s the Marine Corps was becoming acquainted with the island of Hispaniola
that was split between two nations, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Both nations had a political
tradition that dictated office holding as a political right and economic requirement for the political
class known as the elite and the caudillos. Consequently, both governments acquired a considerable
amount of debt during this time period in order to sustain the habits of this tradition. The United States
developed an active interest in Hispaniola following the War with Spain and the construction of the
Panama Canal. The Roosevelt and Taft administrations were primarily focused with the traditional
tasks of protecting American lives and property. However, the US government shifted its focus to
economic and strategic concerns as the State and Navy Departments engaged in gunboat diplomacy, a
foreign policy that is supported by the use or threat of military force. Among these concerns was
European intervention and establishing bases throughout the Caribbean. The US would have to protect
Haiti and the Dominican Republic simultaneously by denying European activity in the American
sphere of interest and to preserve foreign investments for both the United States and Hispaniola.
While the State Department was exploring different options to manage Haiti s economy, there were
several other responsibilities that had to be addressed in the Dominican Republic. In 1911, the

background on this subject. The police officers had a lot of suspects and a lot of evidence and the

very many people knew that John Ramsey had got this exact same amount for a bonus. And Michael

Ramsey supporter Lou Smitt regarding the JonBenet case says, The whole ransom note is, in my

The Solar Of Solar Energy
Luke Schwartz Environmental ethics Final Paper Photovoltaic Panels Have you ever been to a house
or business that uses Solar? Solar power is a great way to save money as well as conserve energy.
Solar panels convert sunlight into usable energy for housing, businesses, sections of properties, and
even stuff like pool equipment. I want to discuss out the three important points about photovoltaic
panels starting with the history of solar panels to understanding panels and how they are built, and
finally the environmental aspects of photovoltaic panels. For those who don t know, solar energy is
radiant energy produced by the sun and can be captured through semi conductors to use the energy.
Solar energy is used in many parts of the world and has become very poplar today. The history of solar
energy goes back to the 1769 s when a Swiss scientist named Horace Benedict de Saussure created the
first solar collector which was an insulated box covered with three layers of glass to absorb heat
energy. Saussure s box became widely know as the first solar oven, reaching temperatures of 230
degrees fahrenheit. (7). This complex system of collecting sunlight to create power for all sorts of
things became extremely popular and the industry started to boom. An article from solar energy
history states that, In 1947 following the second World War, solar power equipment started being
popular among many people in the USA. There was a huge demand of solar equipment. (7). After this

Is King Lear A Tragic Hero Essay
King Lear, one of William Shakespeare s greatest tragedies, depicts a society in grim circumstances.
As with all tragedies, there exists a tragic hero [1] , one who possesses a fatal flaw that initiates the
tragedy and all the sufferings that follow. In this play, the tragic hero is undoubtedly the title character,
King Lear. The plot is driven by the power and consequence of losses, more specifically, the losses of
Lear. In the course the play, King Lear, because of his flaws, loses his authority as a king, his identity
as a father, and his sanity as a man. One loss builds on another, but moreover, his greatest loss, and
what distinguishes this tragedy from all others, is his chance of redemption. Unlike other tragedies,

Furthermore, Lear is infuriated when Kent objects and protests to his decision: Thy youngest daughter
does not love thee least, / Nor are those emptyhearted whose low sounds / Reverb no hollowness
(I.i.153 155). This fatal flaw of insecurity and egotism induces Lear to make error in his judgment,
resulting in the improper division of his kingdom and the loss of his two most loyal companions
Cordelia and Kent. The consequences of this error build up throughout the play, leading to Lear s
ultimate tragic fall.
Lear s lost royal authority now transfers to his two daughters, Goneril and Regan, and they deceitfully
use this power against him. Ironically, Lear also falls in status, to a level inferior to that of his own
children. Goneril no longer loves him beyond all manner and Regan no longer is an enemy to all other
joys as they have professed in the beginning (I.i. 61, 73). Instead, Goneril reprimands his father for the
way his servants and knights have infected her home (I.iv.237). Regan follows suit, and insist that The
old man and his people/ Cannot be well bestowed (II.iv.258). His daughters no longer even respect
him. Lear has now lost his identity as a father, since he even confesses that [He] should be false
persuaded / [He] had daughters (I.iv.227 228). Troubled and confused, Lear reveals his weakened
sense of identity when asking Who is it that can tell me who I am (I.iv.224). Stripped of authority as

Providing Your Puppy Or Dog With An Indoor Kennel Crate
Providing your puppy or dog with an indoor kennel crate can satisfy many dogs need for a den like
enclosure. Besides being an effective housebreaking tool (because it takes advantage of the dog s
natural reluctance to soil its sleeping place), it can also help to reduce separation anxiety, to prevent
destructive behavior (such as chewing furniture), to keep a puppy away from potentially dangerous
household items (i.e., poisons, electrical wires, etc.), and to serve as a mobile indoor dog house which
can be moved from room to room whenever necessary.
A kennel crate also serves as a travel cabin for your dog when traveling by car or plane. Additionally,
most hotels which accept dogs on their premises require them to be crated while in the room to
prevent damage to hotel furniture and rugs. Furnishing Your Puppy s Crate: Toys and Treats: Place
your puppy s favorite toys and dog treats at the far end opposite the door opening. These toys may
include the Tuffy , Billy , Kong , Nylabone or a ball. Toys and balls should always be inedible and
large enough to prevent their being swallowed. Any fragmented toys should be removed to prevent
choking and internal obstruction. You may also place a sterilized marrow bone filled with cheese or
dog treats in the crate. Bedding: Place a towel or blanket inside the crate to create a soft, comfortable
bed for the puppy. If the puppy chews the towel, remove it to prevent the pup from swallowing or
choking on the pieces. Although most

Counterpoint in Gerry Mulligan s Compositions and Arrangements
In 1952 Gerald Joseph Gerry Mulligan (1927 1996) started playing at a jazz club in Los Angeles
called The Haig. During that time he met a lot of the best jazz musicians on the West Coast, including
Kenneth Norville Red Norvo , Erroll Garner, Chesney Chet Baker, Milton Shorty Rogers, Foreststorn
Chico Hamilton, Clifford Bud Shank, Keith Red Mitchell, Robert Whitlock, and also some rising
talent of the area. At The Haig, Mulligan created his famous pianoless quartet with Chico Hamilton on
drums, Robert Whitlock on bass, and Chet Baker on trumpet. Mulligan s idea of having a rhythm
section without a chordal instrument (i.e., piano, guitar, vibraphone) was in part inspired by his desire
of using more counterpoint. Having gained a lot of experience as an arranger and composer with
previous projects with Stan Kenton, and Miles Davis, Mulligan wanted to create a counterpoint
oriented jazz group. His quartet became the first polyphonic jazz group with a contrapuntal style of

consistency. This principle applies when people try to appear consistent to whatever they have

Menarche And Menopause
INTRODUCTION
Women who were the most dormant segment of the Indian population have now become active
participants in all aspects of life (Gyan, 2015). She bear s a special gift of bearing, rearing children.
The major concern in woman s life is reproductive health and they need enormous attention.
Menarche and menopause are the two important phase of the reproductive cycle. The menopause is a
time in women s life when the reproductive capacity ceases. In menopause, the post menopausal stage
is the time next to menopause and peri menopausal is the stage during which menopausal changes
occur (Pillitteri,1999).
In early menopausal transition, estrogen levels are generally normal or even slightly increased; the
level of follicle stimulating hormone begins to elevate but is generally in the normal range (Deborah
Grady, 2006). The women, in the transition to menopause, may experience vasomotor, psychosomatic,
urogenital, psychological symptoms, and increased the tendency to obesity, as well as sexual

Informed Decision Making
Data is very important and critical to any organisation, so is in the telecommunication industries.
Information that can be easily used must be available so that the decisions makers within an industry
can make informed decisions based on visible facts projected by the data available. If this is not the
case, decision making processes can become extremely challenging and, in some cases, impossible.
The flow of information within an organization is critical to the success of that organization
(Davenport Prusak, 1998). Organizations struggle in collecting data, retrieving information and
making decisions based on the extracted information. A decision making process consists of making
judgments based on the qualitative data. There are several different types of systems like Customer
Relationship Management (CRM), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), which are being used by
organizations to make decision processes. These systems have progressed tremendously in the last few
years by making large amounts of information accessible using data marts and data warehouses
(Wixom Watson, 2001). The above mentioned systems and many more that are not mentioned above
allow managers to analyse data depending on the business requirements, to make better informed
decisions. These systems have made the decision making processes easy to a certain point, when used
properly. If this system are not used effectively, they can prevent optimization of the decision making
process. Humans are the once who make decisions in any organisation/industry and not ... Show more

Tokugawa Regime Research Paper
The Tokugawa regime controlled Japan by means of strict power and influence for an extended period
of time. Following the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Ieyasu is named shogun which marks the official
start of Tokugawa rule. The Tokugawa regime would last until 1868 and exercised its control in both
an authoritative and idealogical manner. The regime was strict and orderly relying heavily on Shi no
ko sho (social hierarchy). At the top of the social order were the lords and samurai s, which would be
followed by peasants, artisans, and merchants (SPAM). It was expected of those in the lower class s to
obey and follow the people of higher status and respect the current structure of the Tokugawa regime.
The Bakufu, was also put in place under the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The leaders of the Tokugawa regime were able to implement a variety of idealogical apparatuses for
controlling their people. First, is shi no ko sho which is the hierarchal system with the lords and
samurai s at the top and merchants and lower class civilians at the bottom. The idea of SPAM created
a disconnect between classes along with not allowing much of any social mobility at this time. The
five relationships governing the ruler and the subject, father and son, husband and wife, older brother
and younger brother, and friend and friend have been in existence from olden days to the present time.
Second, is Sankin Kotai, this was an alternate attendance system of the Tokugawa period that aimed at
strengthening central power over the damyo (dominal lords). The Sankin Kotai also benefited the
Tokugawa government and made it difficult for uprisings and rebellions to occur from dominal lords
over the pre existing government. And last, is the five house hold system. This system essentially
relied on neighbors and people of the community to make sure everyone was following the code of
Bakufu. These three ideologies display the manipulation and control that the Tokugawa regime were
able to implement over its people. The lower class feared the authority of samurai s and lords and
simply were obeying law because of their social positioning. These ideologies

Argumentative Essay On The 13th Amendment
By the time the sun barely peeks over the horizon, several others and I have been working the fields
for hours. We pick cotton until our fingers bleed. If my first strip isn t done before noon, the whip will
come slashing. If I complete my strip and take a break before moving on to the next section, the whip
will come slashing. If my legs give out and can no longer support my weight, the whip will come
slashing. When I was informed about the new amendment to the constitution tears welled up in my
eyes as I took a step towards freedom, or what I thought was freedom. The thirteenth amendment
brought forth the idea that slavery would be abolished. However, the congressmen left a loophole in
the amendment, allowing slavery to continue, but under another name. The thirteenth amendment was
the first to abolish slavery, or so people say. The thirteenth amendment reads, Neither slavery nor
involuntary servitude except as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly
convicted shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction, the
constitution. This amendment could easily fool people into believing that all was right within the
world. However, soon after this amendment was added to the constitution unjust laws started to pop
up within the states, When slavery was legally abolished. A new set of laws called Black Codes
emerged to criminalize legal activity for African Americans. Through the enforcement of these laws,
acts such as

Differences Of The First Language Acquisition
Since, the second language is an additional language after we acquire the first language, the L2
learning process can be influenced by the L1 learning process This essay will demonstrate the
similarities and differences in L1 and L2 acquisition by discussing various theories. Then, draw a
conclusion based on the evidence provided and my own experience. First Language Acquisition First
Language Acquisition or also known as the Child Language Acquisition is a process whereby children
from infancy through early school years acquire their first languages (Lightbown Spada, 2006). The

Skinner and his colleagues (Gass Larry, 2008), learning or a change of behaviour on the part of the
learner, is brought about by a process known as operant conditioning which is the result of repeated
training. Operant means voluntary behaviour which is the result of learner s own free will and is not
forced by any outsider or thing (Ortega, 2009). The learner will demonstrate the new behaviour first as
a response to a system of a reward or punishment, and finally it will become an automatic response.
Behaviourists believe that learning a language is no different from learning anything else. It becomes a
habit by the stimulus response reinforcement repetition process (Cook, 2001). The behaviourists also
claim that we learn by imitation and by association (Lightbown Spada, 2006). However,
psycholinguists argue that imitation is not enough because it is not only the mechanical repetition but
also natural exposure that children acquire language (Cook, 2001). Therefore, from the behaviourist
approach, language acquisition can be seen as a stimulus response process. Children learn language by
immitation and analogy. The roles of imitation, repetition, reinforcement, and motivation are essential
in learning the language. The First Language Acquisition is thus the result of nature which based on
practicing. Nativist or Innateness

Dracul Gothic Fiction In The Victorian Era
In the Victorian Era, Gothic fiction was an exceedingly popular literature genre among numerous
people because it was relatively new. Such elements as death, gloom, suspense, mystery, and terror
make up a Gothic novel in literature. The novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker, was the ideal Gothic
fiction in the 19th century and still is today because of its incorporation of vampires, castles, spine
chilling murders, and overpowering emotions which contribute to the Gothic atmosphere. Dracula is
set in Transylvania, during the Victorian Era. The setting is extremely significant in Dracula because it
contributes abundantly to the Gothic atmosphere the novel possesses. In this novel, the setting
includes wild Transylvanian landscapes, dreary buildings, secret hidden rooms, an asylum, and a
graveyard. Such setting contribute to the novel s gothic ambiance because they are places that usually
tend to reveal a perturbing feeling to those surrounding it. The most seen settings in the novel Dracula
is Dracula s castle, the graveyard by St. Mary s Church and Dr. Seward s asylum which all contain
gloomy features that contribute to the Gothic atmosphere in Dracula. Dracula s castle is described as It
contains all in all some twenty acres, quite surrounded by the solid wall above mentioned. There are
many trees on it, which makes it in places gloomy, and there is a deep, dark looking pond or small
lake... (Stoker 22). The castle s abundant amount of trees surrounding the castle and

The Geology Of Ontario Through Its Rocks
Minerals are what make up Rocks and rocks are what make up the geology of an area. In this report,
we will focus on the geology of Ontario through its rocks. We will look at ten difference rocks
samples that have been collected from several different places here in Windsor Ontario including the
beach, the river, gravel pits, along highways and roadways as well in parks and campsites. The rocks
that were collected are all rocks that have formed right here in Ontario.
Canada and especially Ontario have very interesting and much filled geologic pasts. Ontario has many
types of rocks and minerals that have formed and are still forming due to the geology. Ontario has
sedimentary rocks; igneous rock, and metamorphic rock as well as minerals such as gold, silver,
quartz, and many more. In this paper, we will begin by talking about ten rocks that were collected
right here in Windsor Ontario. The rocks were examined from the outside which tended to be
weathered and the inside which were fresh.
Description of rock types:
The collection of the rocks was based on just picking up the most amount of difference looking rocks
that was possible and bringing them home to analyze. This was done for about two months from many
difference locations including campgrounds, beaches, rivers, highways as well as construction sites.
After about two months there were many rocks so I started to analyze and take out the rocks that were
of the same kind. I found many granite, basalt and conglomerate rocks.

The Environmental Effects Of Plastic Shopping Bags
Originally patented in 1965, the single use plastic shopping bag has since become ubiquitous in
America and around the world. Plastic bags were first introduced in grocery stores in 1977, and by the
early 2000s they constituted 80% of the market for shopping bags (Laskow). These bags caught on
because they were stronger, lighter, waterproof, and many people found them easier to carry than
paper. Most importantly though, they were cheaper, meaning retail stores had strong incentives to
make them available to customers and promote their use (Petru). In other words, plastic bags became
popular, and remain so today, because they are convenient. However, this convenience does not take
into account the environmental effects associated with their production, distribution, and disposal.
Once these aspects of their use are considered, it is clear that the convenience of plastic shopping bags
do not justify the harms to the ecosystem caused by their existence.
Plastic bags are usually made out of high density polyethylene (HDPE), a strong, durable plastic made
from ethylene monomers (Clark). 134 million metric tons of ethylene are produced each year as of
2014, with 28% of that production going towards the manufacture of HDPE (Lazonby, Ethene ).
Ethylene is produced from oil and natural gas, and in the process has significant environmental
consequences. According to a 2013 study by Ghanta, Fahey, and Subramaniam published in the
journal Applied Petrochemical Research, For ethylene produced from naphtha and ethane [the two
main sources of ethylene], the energy expended during the extraction and ocean based transportation
of fossil fuel sources (crude oil and natural gas) contributes significantly to adverse environmental
impacts such as GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions, acidification, and eco toxicity. To make ethylene,
fossil fuels must be extracted, transported, and processed (Lazonby, Ethene ). Then the ethylene must
be processed to make HDPE (Lazonby, Poly(Ethene) ). HDPE, in the form of plastic pellets, is then
transported to the plastic bag manufacturer. The manufacturing process of Novolex, a maker of plastic
packaging products that sells bags under the brand name Hilex Poly ( Company Overview ), is
described

Age Of Reform Essay
Anti slavery, perfect societies, connections with nature, and less alcohol were just some of the issues
discussed and acted upon during the Age of Reform. The Age of Reform was a social reform, or an
attempt to improve upon issues in society, occurred in America during the mid 1800 s. Reform
movements such as public education and women s rights both made essential impacts on American
Society. One of the many changes in the Age of Reform was the reform of public education. The first
schools were built for religious purposes, but during this period, the reformers wanted better schools
to make sure that the future voters would be informed. Also, these schools would help immigrants
become part of the culture of American society. Massachusetts was ... Show more content on

Originally, the rights of American women were minor. Women could not vote, serve on juries, or
attend colleges among other restrictions. Women like Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton
fought long and hard for civil, religious, and social rights of American women. Stanton wrote the
Declaration of Sentiments which was modeled after the Declaration of Independence. This declaration
demanded equality of men and women. Women s suffrage, or the right to vote, was another struggle
for the women to overcome. These women did win some small victories such as convincing New York
to pass a law protecting women s property rights, and some states even began to allow married women
to keep their wages. Education also improved for women. American schools were focused on
educating boys, who would grow up to be voters, so Emma Willard started The Troy Female
Seminary. Eventually, Mary Lyon built Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, which was the first college
for women, although it was not called a college at the time. Even though education improved for
women, it would not be until 1920 that a constitutional amendment would be made to allow women to
vote. The Women s Rights Movement was a very major and important improvement for American

Relationship Between L2 And L2 On The Acquisition Of...
This chapter explains the methodology that was employed to answer research questions discussed in
Chapter 2. It includes a description of research design, how the instrument was developed, how the
subjects were selected, and how the data were collect analyzed. 3.1. Research design: The research
employed a qualitative research method that is concerned with developing explanations of social
phenomena, in other words, the goal is to help to understand the world and why things are the way
they are. Therefore, it seeks to answer questions of social aspects of our world such as why and how
(Weick, 1984). Similarly, this study attempted to understand the effect of L1 pragmatic transfer on the
acquisition of English by Saudi learners of English through investigating the relationship between L1
transfer and L2 proficiency which will help to fill the gap in the Saudi students pragmatics production,
comprehension, and development of L2 and poor communication with native speakers of English. 3.2.
Instrument: To answer the previous research questions, a multiple choice questionnaire was employed
to elicit the speech act behavior of expressions of Saudi learners of English at two different levels.
Questionnaires can be distributed to a large sample in a relatively short time, thus, offer an efficient
use of time. The instrument of this study consisted three parts; a letter of invitation for participants, a
demographic and background survey, and a multiple choice

A Short Account Of Destruction Of The Indies Analysis
The last element to take in consideration when comparing these two perspectives is the validity of
them. Often, when writing, personal opinions and biased inter the paper. According to the
introduction, Las Cases was a conquistador how converted to the priests hood after having a
revolution. When writing A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies he was trying to persuade
the monarch that something need to be done about the Spaniards treatment of the natives. To prove his
point Las Casas more than likely over exaggerated the truth to make the atrocities look worse than
they were. For instance, the mascara of Cholula was actually instigated by the Tlaxcala, another tribe
of natives, to prove the Spaniard loyalty and in return; they would

ABSTRACT
We report the effect of variation in concentration of calf thymus DNA on the fluorescence emission of
OM 73 and OM 120 in different media. Both intercalative and charge dependent binding may occur
between the OM 73 compound and DNA. Through fluorescence titrations the binding constant of OM
73 in a salt solution was estimated. Binding of OM 73 to ds DNA is not temperature dependent.
After one week of exposure to room temperature, both OM 73 and OM 120 solutions exhibit changes
in uv visible absorption spectra and fluoresce spectra. Additions of DNA to OM 73 yielded atypical
reductions in fluorescence intensity with low ds DNA BP additions [0 50 micromolar] to OM 73, and
significant typical increases in fluorescence signal with high ds DNA BP additions to OM 73 [above
100 micromolar].
OM 73 was titrated with low BP ds DNA additions at different NaCl concentrations in order to
investigate the presence of charge dependent binding. When titrating OM 73 at low BP concentrations
of ds DNA, the fluorescence decreases in the low BP concentration range was measured. Smaller
reductions in the fluorescence intensity were observed at larger concentrations of NaCl, indicative of
less binding, when comparable amounts of ds DNA were added. This indicates that the binding of OM
73 at the low BP range to ds DNA BP is almost entirely due to

  • 2. Momentous Gender Selection One of life s profound moments is that of a mother s caressing gaze into the eyes of her first born child. Only a minority of mothers who conceive genetically impaired children face an alternative world of heartbreak and melancholy. It s a beautiful thing to conceive life s bundle of joy, and another to conceive a child suffering from genetic disorders. Inheriting altered genes through autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X linked dominant and X linked recessive are potential leads to genetic disorders in offspring (Health Direct Australia, 2014). Interventions such as Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) have opened up a diverse field of scientific research, committed to overcoming this biological issue. Over decades of momentous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Imbalance of genders occur when one gender is outstanding in number to that of the other gender; for example, if there were many more males to females. Gender imbalance is calculated by the sex ratio, that is the ratio of males to females in a population (World Health Organisation, 2015). China and India are evidence of where gender imbalance has occurred. In both countries, there are specific customs and cultural stereotypes that are strictly adhered to. China perceive males to be more valuable than female due to religious beliefs, labour, and financial support; The Chinese have traditionally preferred sons because of their potential to financially support their parents, carry on the family name, and lead ancestor worship (Hsu, 2008). India s ideology of male preference is based on the education of women; women s education is the single most significant factor in reducing son preference (Rohini Pande, 2006). It s clear that China and India have experienced gender imbalance due to cultural gender preferences. The American Medical Association argues that gender imbalance is less likely to happen in the Western world (American Medical Association, 2003 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How The Apollo Missions Changed Space Travel Space is something that we humans are never going to be able to comprehend and understand what it is exactly. But knowing that still is not going to stop us from trying to know as much about space as we possibly can. The Apollo missions took that step to reaching greater heights, and landing on our moon to know more about what it is and what is on it. These missions changed our look on space travel and what humans can accomplish if we put our minds to it. The Apollo Program started in 1963 and went all the way through 1972. On January 27, 1967 there was an accident during the preflight test for Apollo 1. The Astronauts on that flight were named Virgil Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee. They all lost their lives in a fire on Apollo 1. What started the fire was an electrical failure in the command module which ignited the inside of the ship with the Astronauts trapped inside with no way out. It is a classic because it has lasted for many of years and its message will last. It has many beautiful musical acts that sticks with the viewer. The technical features of the sound of music were the usage of bright colors. It s opening scene included a lovely green landscape which leads you to the main character showing that she will be lively. Then when you meet the kids you are greeted with a dull staircase with and a whistle to show that they are obedient and do not bend the rules. • 5. Essay about The Renaissance as a Distinct Period of Time The Middle Ages was a time in history where everyone was faithful to religion as well as others. Also, in the Middle Ages, people were encouraged to always try their best; they were encouraged to strive for the highest achievement possible and to never give up. The Renaissance, however, was more focused on becoming matured and finding a way to be successful at everything one does. During this era, people strived to become all sided men, also known as; renaissance men. This means they are not only successful in one type of art but in all types of art, as well as math, science, and literature. The Renaissance was a distinct period in time that was separated from the Middle Ages and began a new era. The writers and thinkers of the fifteenth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They believed that the people of the Middle Ages used religion as an excuse to drink and gain money and power (Document 5). The Middle Ages was a time where people were more conserved with education and did not have the curiosities that fell upon those in the Renaissance. Curiosity of the human body and deeper knowledge about art and literature became two popular areas throughout the Renaissance. Leonardo daVinci drew beautiful pieces of art that depicted the natural and realistic human body and it s internal muscle and bone structures. The drawings of the human body by daVinci, show that he was not afraid to go the distance and have no limits as to how far he will push himself to understand the human body (Document 6). Leonardo was a true Renaissance man. In addition, another evidential person who leads a reader towards making the inference that the Renaissance is a separate era from the Middle Ages, is Johannes Kepler. Johannes Kepler was an astronomer from Germany that made an observation about people in the Middle Ages that tend to follow and agree with everything the priests say. Johannes said that with the distinct knowledge of the Renaissance, people now had their own education and had the power to question what others said or thought (Document 7). Education was always existent through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. However, the education during the Renaissance was extremely different and more widely spread than the education that was provided in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The World Is Changing And The Environment Introduction The world is changing and the environment we are living in is becoming very competitive by the day. Considering the work environment of this changing world, both the employees and employers at the workplace are facing a lot of risk issues, regarding this rapid change in the economy and society followed by the overpowering competition. In order to sustain in the business market and meet the consumer demands, the organizations and the employers are required to come up with new methods and unbeatable prices of products. Moreover due to the emergence of globalisation, these organizations are bound to apply cost cutting approach (lower wage approach), which influences the shifts in workforce composition, labour utilization and labour demand. (Rani, 2000) This shift leads to what can be defined as labour flexibility . According to Standing (1999), the term can be defined as a rise in new technologies, development of more complex labour control structures, participation of labours throughout the world with the help of globalisation. The more complex definitions and theories of labour flexibility will be discussed later in this essay. I am writing this essay to portray how labour flexibility has given rise to international human resource management and how globalization plays a vital role in the emergence of the former two concepts. In my essay I will first introduce globalization, since it has been a very important topic of discussion in the international human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Voices Against War By Thomas Hardy The Voices Against Wars of Many The voicing of opinions against war was not made common until around the eighteen hundreds. War was always considered an opportunity for glory and a chance to prove one s self to his or her fellow soldier and his or her country. However, with the advancement in technological warfare and physical battle becoming more gruesome, many felt the need to speak out against the activity of war. Thomas Hardy voices his opinion on the second Boer War through poetry. The second Boer War witnessed some of the beginnings of more accurate cannons and propelled explosives, giving South Africa a strong resistance to Great Britain. Wilfred Owen witnessed first hand of the horrors of World War I with a price of his life. He wrote poetry vividly describing his treacherous experience on the battlefield. Also Randall Jarrell, served in World War II and used his experience to write an anti war poem with the imagery of his experience. All of these anti war poems most be analyzed properly to fully understand how their authors present their message. The conventions used by Hardy, Owen and Jarrell in their respective anti war poems are the essence of their messages against the activity of war, and the analysis of the anti war theme. During this part of the novel, Pi s father is teaching him a lesson by letting a tiger brutally kill a goat right in front of him. He is trying to teach Pi to not go near an animal such as tigers because they are incredibly dangerous. I believe this thread represents the foreshadowing of what is to come for Pi. When Pi and Ravi s father was telling them about staying away from tigers he said Tigers are very dangerous. The significance of his name is because he spends 227 days in a huge swimming pool (the ocean) fighting for his life. The thread develops during the novel because as the novel goes on and he s stuck on the lifeboat, Pi starts to question who Pi really is. When he starts questioning who he is, he finds it hard to learn who he truly wants to be. The message the author is trying to get across is be true to yourself. 3) Young Pi s dedication to three religions As explained in the book, Pi follows three different religions; Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Pi is extremely interested in all three religions and tries to find himself through religion. Although, he does not understand why he can t follow all three religions. But he can t be a Hindu, a Christian and a Muslim. It s impossible. He must choose. (76) This thread represents that he dedicates himself to the things he believes in and will fight for what he believes in. Even when his family disagreed with his decision of following all three religions, he still fought for what he believed. This thread develops during the novel because while he is on the lifeboat Pi starts questioning who truly he is and wants to be. • 10. Theu.s. Roosevelt And Taft Administrations Throughout the early 1900s the Marine Corps was becoming acquainted with the island of Hispaniola that was split between two nations, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Both nations had a political tradition that dictated office holding as a political right and economic requirement for the political class known as the elite and the caudillos. Consequently, both governments acquired a considerable amount of debt during this time period in order to sustain the habits of this tradition. The United States developed an active interest in Hispaniola following the War with Spain and the construction of the Panama Canal. The Roosevelt and Taft administrations were primarily focused with the traditional tasks of protecting American lives and property. However, the US government shifted its focus to economic and strategic concerns as the State and Navy Departments engaged in gunboat diplomacy, a foreign policy that is supported by the use or threat of military force. Among these concerns was European intervention and establishing bases throughout the Caribbean. The US would have to protect Haiti and the Dominican Republic simultaneously by denying European activity in the American sphere of interest and to preserve foreign investments for both the United States and Hispaniola. While the State Department was exploring different options to manage Haiti s economy, there were several other responsibilities that had to be addressed in the Dominican Republic. Like the length of the ransom note it was really long so it would have took time to write it. Asking for $118,000 is a very specific amount and the other weird part is that not very many people knew that John Ramsey had got this exact same amount for a bonus. And Michael Baden, a board certified forensic pathologist with both former District Attorney Alex Hunter as well as Ramsey supporter Lou Smitt regarding the JonBenet case says, The whole ransom note is, in my experience of 60 years, not a usual ransom note. I don t think it was written by an outside stranger. And more so than the writing itself is how it was done: the pen, the paper, the length of time it took to do it without being discovered. Then there is the extremely unusual ransom request for $118,000: Only a very few people knew John Ramsey had [just] gotten a $118,000 bonus. (Bane, 2016). • 13. The Solar Of Solar Energy Luke Schwartz Environmental ethics Final Paper Photovoltaic Panels Have you ever been to a house or business that uses Solar? Solar power is a great way to save money as well as conserve energy. Solar panels convert sunlight into usable energy for housing, businesses, sections of properties, and even stuff like pool equipment. I want to discuss out the three important points about photovoltaic panels starting with the history of solar panels to understanding panels and how they are built, and finally the environmental aspects of photovoltaic panels. For those who don t know, solar energy is radiant energy produced by the sun and can be captured through semi conductors to use the energy. Solar energy is used in many parts of the world and has become very poplar today. The history of solar energy goes back to the 1769 s when a Swiss scientist named Horace Benedict de Saussure created the first solar collector which was an insulated box covered with three layers of glass to absorb heat energy. Saussure s box became widely know as the first solar oven, reaching temperatures of 230 degrees fahrenheit. (7). This complex system of collecting sunlight to create power for all sorts of things became extremely popular and the industry started to boom. An article from solar energy history states that, In 1947 following the second World War, solar power equipment started being popular among many people in the USA. There was a huge demand of solar equipment. (7). After this boom ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Is King Lear A Tragic Hero Essay King Lear, one of William Shakespeare s greatest tragedies, depicts a society in grim circumstances. As with all tragedies, there exists a tragic hero [1] , one who possesses a fatal flaw that initiates the tragedy and all the sufferings that follow. In this play, the tragic hero is undoubtedly the title character, King Lear. The plot is driven by the power and consequence of losses, more specifically, the losses of Lear. In the course the play, King Lear, because of his flaws, loses his authority as a king, his identity as a father, and his sanity as a man. One loss builds on another, but moreover, his greatest loss, and what distinguishes this tragedy from all others, is his chance of redemption. Unlike other tragedies, there is no ... Furthermore, Lear is infuriated when Kent objects and protests to his decision: Thy youngest daughter does not love thee least, / Nor are those emptyhearted whose low sounds / Reverb no hollowness (I.i.153 155). This fatal flaw of insecurity and egotism induces Lear to make error in his judgment, resulting in the improper division of his kingdom and the loss of his two most loyal companions Cordelia and Kent. The consequences of this error build up throughout the play, leading to Lear s ultimate tragic fall. Lear s lost royal authority now transfers to his two daughters, Goneril and Regan, and they deceitfully use this power against him. Ironically, Lear also falls in status, to a level inferior to that of his own children. Goneril no longer loves him beyond all manner and Regan no longer is an enemy to all other joys as they have professed in the beginning (I.i. 61, 73). Instead, Goneril reprimands his father for the way his servants and knights have infected her home (I.iv.237). Regan follows suit, and insist that The old man and his people/ Cannot be well bestowed (II.iv.258). His daughters no longer even respect him. Lear has now lost his identity as a father, since he even confesses that [He] should be false persuaded / [He] had daughters (I.iv.227 228). • 16. Providing Your Puppy Or Dog With An Indoor Kennel Crate Providing your puppy or dog with an indoor kennel crate can satisfy many dogs need for a den like enclosure. Besides being an effective housebreaking tool (because it takes advantage of the dog s natural reluctance to soil its sleeping place), it can also help to reduce separation anxiety, to prevent destructive behavior (such as chewing furniture), to keep a puppy away from potentially dangerous household items (i.e., poisons, electrical wires, etc.), and to serve as a mobile indoor dog house which can be moved from room to room whenever necessary. A kennel crate also serves as a travel cabin for your dog when traveling by car or plane. Additionally, most hotels which accept dogs on their premises require them to be crated while in the room to prevent damage to hotel furniture and rugs. Furnishing Your Puppy s Crate: Toys and Treats: Place your puppy s favorite toys and dog treats at the far end opposite the door opening. These toys may include the Tuffy , Billy , Kong , Nylabone or a ball. Toys and balls should always be inedible and large enough to prevent their being swallowed. Any fragmented toys should be removed to prevent choking and internal obstruction. You may also place a sterilized marrow bone filled with cheese or dog treats in the crate. • 17. Gerry Mulligan Essay Counterpoint in Gerry Mulligan s Compositions and Arrangements In 1952 Gerald Joseph Gerry Mulligan (1927 1996) started playing at a jazz club in Los Angeles called The Haig. During that time he met a lot of the best jazz musicians on the West Coast, including Kenneth Norville Red Norvo , Erroll Garner, Chesney Chet Baker, Milton Shorty Rogers, Foreststorn Chico Hamilton, Clifford Bud Shank, Keith Red Mitchell, Robert Whitlock, and also some rising talent of the area. At The Haig, Mulligan created his famous pianoless quartet with Chico Hamilton on drums, Robert Whitlock on bass, and Chet Baker on trumpet. Mulligan s idea of having a rhythm section without a chordal instrument (i.e., piano, guitar, vibraphone) was in part inspired by his desire of using more counterpoint. Having gained a lot of experience as an arranger and composer with previous projects with Stan Kenton, and Miles Davis, Mulligan wanted to create a counterpoint oriented jazz group. This passage is an example of how Mulligan was creating three voice counterpoint with the quartet; the trumpet played the standard melody, while the saxophone performed a contrapuntal written line. Menarche and menopause are the two important phase of the reproductive cycle. The menopause is a time in women s life when the reproductive capacity ceases. In menopause, the post menopausal stage is the time next to menopause and peri menopausal is the stage during which menopausal changes occur (Pillitteri,1999). In early menopausal transition, estrogen levels are generally normal or even slightly increased; the level of follicle stimulating hormone begins to elevate but is generally in the normal range (Deborah Grady, 2006). The women, in the transition to menopause, may experience vasomotor, psychosomatic, urogenital, psychological symptoms, and increased the tendency to obesity, as well as sexual dysfunction. Information that can be easily used must be available so that the decisions makers within an industry can make informed decisions based on visible facts projected by the data available. If this is not the case, decision making processes can become extremely challenging and, in some cases, impossible. The flow of information within an organization is critical to the success of that organization (Davenport Prusak, 1998). Organizations struggle in collecting data, retrieving information and making decisions based on the extracted information. A decision making process consists of making judgments based on the qualitative data. There are several different types of systems like Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), which are being used by organizations to make decision processes. These systems have progressed tremendously in the last few years by making large amounts of information accessible using data marts and data warehouses (Wixom Watson, 2001). The above mentioned systems and many more that are not mentioned above allow managers to analyse data depending on the business requirements, to make better informed decisions. These systems have made the decision making processes easy to a certain point, when used properly. If this system are not used effectively, they can prevent optimization of the decision making process. Humans are the once who make decisions in any organisation/industry and not ... First, is shi no ko sho which is the hierarchal system with the lords and samurai s at the top and merchants and lower class civilians at the bottom. The idea of SPAM created a disconnect between classes along with not allowing much of any social mobility at this time. The five relationships governing the ruler and the subject, father and son, husband and wife, older brother and younger brother, and friend and friend have been in existence from olden days to the present time. Second, is Sankin Kotai, this was an alternate attendance system of the Tokugawa period that aimed at strengthening central power over the damyo (dominal lords). The Sankin Kotai also benefited the Tokugawa government and made it difficult for uprisings and rebellions to occur from dominal lords over the pre existing government. And last, is the five house hold system. This system essentially relied on neighbors and people of the community to make sure everyone was following the code of Bakufu. Skinner and his colleagues (Gass Larry, 2008), learning or a change of behaviour on the part of the learner, is brought about by a process known as operant conditioning which is the result of repeated training. Operant means voluntary behaviour which is the result of learner s own free will and is not forced by any outsider or thing (Ortega, 2009). The learner will demonstrate the new behaviour first as a response to a system of a reward or punishment, and finally it will become an automatic response. Behaviourists believe that learning a language is no different from learning anything else. It becomes a habit by the stimulus response reinforcement repetition process (Cook, 2001). The behaviourists also claim that we learn by imitation and by association (Lightbown Spada, 2006). However, psycholinguists argue that imitation is not enough because it is not only the mechanical repetition but also natural exposure that children acquire language (Cook, 2001). Therefore, from the behaviourist approach, language acquisition can be seen as a stimulus response process. Children learn language by immitation and analogy. The roles of imitation, repetition, reinforcement, and motivation are essential in learning the language. The First Language Acquisition is thus the result of nature which based on practicing. • 26. The Environmental Effects Of Plastic Shopping Bags Originally patented in 1965, the single use plastic shopping bag has since become ubiquitous in America and around the world. Plastic bags were first introduced in grocery stores in 1977, and by the early 2000s they constituted 80% of the market for shopping bags (Laskow). These bags caught on because they were stronger, lighter, waterproof, and many people found them easier to carry than paper. Most importantly though, they were cheaper, meaning retail stores had strong incentives to make them available to customers and promote their use (Petru). In other words, plastic bags became popular, and remain so today, because they are convenient. However, this convenience does not take into account the environmental effects associated with their production, distribution, and disposal. Once these aspects of their use are considered, it is clear that the convenience of plastic shopping bags do not justify the harms to the ecosystem caused by their existence. Plastic bags are usually made out of high density polyethylene (HDPE), a strong, durable plastic made from ethylene monomers (Clark). 134 million metric tons of ethylene are produced each year as of 2014, with 28% of that production going towards the manufacture of HDPE (Lazonby, Ethene ). Ethylene is produced from oil and natural gas, and in the process has significant environmental consequences. According to a 2013 study by Ghanta, Fahey, and Subramaniam published in the journal Applied Petrochemical Research, For ethylene produced from naphtha and ethane [the two main sources of ethylene], the energy expended during the extraction and ocean based transportation of fossil fuel sources (crude oil and natural gas) contributes significantly to adverse environmental impacts such as GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions, acidification, and eco toxicity. To make ethylene, fossil fuels must be extracted, transported, and processed (Lazonby, Ethene ). Then the ethylene must be processed to make HDPE (Lazonby, Poly(Ethene) ). HDPE, in the form of plastic pellets, is then transported to the plastic bag manufacturer. Spectroscopic Studies Of A Ruthenium Spectroscopic Studies of a Ruthenium (II) Tris diimine Complex with a Cationic Ligand By: Akiva Raskind Mentor: Dr. Thomas Strekas ABSTRACT We report the effect of variation in concentration of calf thymus DNA on the fluorescence emission of OM 73 and OM 120 in different media. Both intercalative and charge dependent binding may occur between the OM 73 compound and DNA. Through fluorescence titrations the binding constant of OM 73 in a salt solution was estimated. Binding of OM 73 to ds DNA is not temperature dependent. After one week of exposure to room temperature, both OM 73 and OM 120 solutions exhibit changes in uv visible absorption spectra and fluoresce spectra. Additions of DNA to OM 73 yielded atypical reductions in fluorescence intensity with low ds DNA BP additions [0 50 micromolar] to OM 73, and significant typical increases in fluorescence signal with high ds DNA BP additions to OM 73 [above 100 micromolar]. OM 73 was titrated with low BP ds DNA additions at different NaCl concentrations in order to investigate the presence of charge dependent binding. When titrating OM 73 at low BP concentrations of ds DNA, the fluorescence decreases in the low BP concentration range was measured. Smaller reductions in the fluorescence intensity were observed at larger concentrations of NaCl, indicative of less binding, when comparable amounts of ds DNA were added. This indicates that the binding of OM 73 at the low BP range to ds DNA BP is almost entirely due to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
