 Animals, including humans, cannot synthesis
all the different amino acids need and thus
require them in their diet.
 These amino acids are called the essential
amino acids.
 proteins in food hydrolysed in the digestive
tract and the resulting amino acids are
reassembled into proteins within the animals
cells.
 All animals are ultimately dependent on plant
for proetin , as it is plant the create proetin by
combining inorganic nitrogen from the soil
with organic molecules derived from carbon
from the atmosphere (as CO2 )
Changing demands for dietary protein
 Increasing populations in some countries have
overstreteched food supplies , and so limited the
availability of foods.
 Crop production is dependent upon a suitable
climate and in most countries arable land is already
fully farmed.
 In countries where animal meat a high proporation
of dietary protein, there are controversies such as
whether or not the fats eaten with the protein are
helthy ,whether or not we are justified in keeping
animals in the unnatural conditions of some farms,
or whether or not we justified in killing animals for
Fish stock in the oceans are in danger of
becoming depleted. food at all.
 The term single cell protein was coined
in 1966 by carroll L. Wilson.
 Since ancient times , people near lake
chad, africa , and the Aztecs near lake
texcoco , mexico , harvested BlueGreen
algae, SPIRULINA , from the lake , dried
in sun and used as food.
 But the first industrial production of SCP
dates back to world war I when Torula
yeast (condida utilis) was produced in
Germany and used in soup and sausages.
WHY USE SCP ?
SAVING AGRICULTURAL SPACE
• SCP processes are efficient on space. SCP production
plants can be built on land unsuitable for agriculture
and so need not computer space with conventional
sources of protein.
• Also they are much more efficient in terms of
amount of protein produced per unit area.
• SCP may be used directly as human food
supplement.
• It may be used in animals feed to at least partially
replace the currently used protein rich soya been
meals and fish protein ,and even cereals, which can
be diverted for human consumption.
RAPID GROWTH
(MICRO – ORGANISMS )
 Micro-organism grow rapidly.
 Micro-organism grow much more
rapidly than plant or animals.
 Bacteria can grow with mean
generation times (doubling times )
as short as 20- 30 minutes.
 The mean generation times of
unicellular algae and fungi are
about 1 – 3 Hours.
Some SCPs…..
 Yeasts
 Saccharomyces cerevisiae ,
 Pichia pastoris ,
 Candida utilis = Torulopis and
 Geotrichum candidum (=oidium
lactis).
 Other fungi
 Aspergillus oryzae ,
 Fusarium venenatum ,
 Sclerotium rolfisii ,
 Polyporus and
 Trichoderma .
 Bacteria
 Rhodopseudomonas capsulata .
 Algae
 Chlorella and
 Spriulina
 The devlopment of SCP was really the beginning of biotechnology.
 Prior to this the industrial fermentation was mainly focused on
antibiotics and other products which did not have to compete.
 This was not the case with SCP was which had to compete with
similar products in the market.
 The devlopment was brought up by the oil companies rather than the
food companies , because they could take the risk of a highly costly
products out with no real expected profit.
 The efforts tried so far by adding dry SCP as s supplement to diets in
order to solve the problems of the hungry in the third world countries
, certainly have not given the expected results.
 Every new food which appears in the market should have not only high
nutritive quality but also satisfactory organolpetic supplementary
element.
