What are simulations
and games?
Simulations and games are teaching and learn-
ing methods in which participants are directly
involved in making decisions and learning from
from their outcome.

Why use Games &
Simulations as a Tool?
Games have attributes that are associated
with how people learn-social research, prob-
lem solving, better understanding.
Simulation is the technique of representing
the real world scenario or situation through a
computer program.

interactive.

3 Types of simulations
Live Simulations - involves people and equip-
ment in an activity where they would operate for
real. For example - war games with soldiers in
the field.
Virtual Simulations - involves people and
equipment in a computer controlled environ-
ment. Example - flight simulator.
Constructive Simulations - do not involve
both people and equipment, but are driven by
proper sequencing of events. Example - antici-
pating the path of hurricane through application.

Simulations offer several
benefits

Advantages
•Simulations are often less expensive to
create than their real life counterparts. For
example, installing flight simulation software
is cheaper than buying a jet for a school.
•It can be paused and replayed at any time,
whereas real life cannot. Pausing allows more
time for students to assess each step which
helps them in getting their concept clear.
•Simulations act as motivators for learning.
Student involvement in the activity is so deep
that it enhances their attention span, leading
to in-depth learning about the activity or its
subject matter.

The teacher's role earlier used to be that of
a presenter of facts to students. The stu-
dents were mere listeners who had very little
or no opportunity to interact and relate the
subject to their experiences.
It is time to realize that roles have changed.
Simulations and Games add new dimension
to the learning experience and enhance the
teacher's role even further.

With an increase in expectations from students, the traditional learning methods are proving less attractive.   • 7. What are simulations and games? Simulations and games are teaching and learn- ing methods in which participants are directly involved in making decisions and learning from from their outcome. *Image Source: www.flickrcom/creative-commons
  • 8. Why use Games & Simulations as a Tool? Games have attributes that are associated with how people learn-social research, prob- lem solving, better understanding.   • 10. 3 Types of simulations Live Simulations - involves people and equip- ment in an activity where they would operate for real. For example - war games with soldiers in the field. Virtual Simulations - involves people and equipment in a computer controlled environ- ment. Example - flight simulator. Constructive Simulations - do not involve both people and equipment, but are driven by proper sequencing of events.   • 11. Interactive Simulations have six key structural elements Rules Goals & objectives Outcomes & feedbacks Conflicts/ competitions/ challenges/ oppositions Interactions Representations or stories *Image Source: www.pixabay.com
  • 13. Advantages •Simulations are often less expensive to create than their real life counterparts. For example, installing flight simulation software is cheaper than buying a jet for a school. •It can be paused and replayed at any time, whereas real life cannot. Pausing allows more time for students to assess each step which helps them in getting their concept clear. •Simulations act as motivators for learning. Student involvement in the activity is so deep that it enhances their attention span, leading to in-depth learning about the activity or its subject matter. *Image Source: www.pixabay.com
  • 14. The teacher's role earlier used to be that of a presenter of facts to students. The stu- dents were mere listeners who had very little or no opportunity to interact and relate the subject to their experiences. It is time to realize that roles have changed.
