INTRODUCTION
 Microorganisms are very small organisms
which cannot be seen with the naked eye.
 They can be seen only with a magnifying glass
or high power microscope.
 Microorganisms are found in all kinds of
environment like ice cold climate, hot springs,
deserts, marshy lands etc.
 They are also found inside the bodies of other
organisms.
3
DEFINITION
Micro – It means very small which cannot be seen with
naked eyes.
Organisms – It is a living creature that may be small or
large present in our environment.
Microorganisms include :-
 Virus
 Bacteria
 Protozoa
 Fungi
 Algae
4
MICROORGANISMS USE IN DIFFERENT
FIELDS
1. Decomposition of organic wastes and residues.
2. Production of antibiotics and other bioactive
compounds.
3. Fixation of atmospheric nitrogen.
4. Suppression of soil-borne pathogens.
5. Recycling and increased availability of plant nutrients.
6. Degradation of toxicants including pesticides.
7. Production of food for all organisms.
8. Complexation of heavy metals to limit plant uptake.
9. Production of electricity.
10. Production of polysaccharides to improve soil
aggregation.
5
SOME MAIN PROCESS IN DIFFERENT FIELDS
 Decomposition of organic wastes
6
PRODUCTION OF ANTIBIOTICS
7
FOR FOOD PRODUCTION
8
DEGRADATION OF TOXICANTS
9
PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICITY.
10
CONTROL OF MICROORGANISMS
11
ADVANTAGES OF MICROORGANISMS
 Microorganisms like bacteria decomposes
organic waste into manure and increases
the fertility of the soil.
 Microorganisms help in fixing atmospheric
nitrogen into nitrogen compounds in the soil
and increases the fertility of the soil.
 Microorganisms are used for making curd
from milk, for making cheese, pickles,
bread, cakes, pastries, alcohol, wine,
vinegar (acetic acid) etc.
 Microorganisms are used for making
medicines. 12
DISADVANTAGES OF MICROORGANISMS
 Some microorganisms cause diseases in plants
and animals.
 Some microorganisms grow in food substances
and produce toxic substances and makes the
food poisonous.
 Some microorganisms spoil materials like
clothing, leather, wood etc.
 Some insects and animals act as carriers of
disease causing microbes.
Eg :- House fly, Female anopheles mosquito
(malaria), Female aedes mosquito (dengue
fever) etc.
13
CONCLUSION
 Our environment and ecosystem is partial
without microorganisms so this way micro-
organisms play very important role.
 Study of significance of microorganisms is
essential and important for proper
understanding of our environment i.e. how
microorganisms are useful in various field.
