HARMFUL ACTIVITIES OF
BACTERIA
Some harmful activities of bacteria
* Pathogenic activities
* Food poisoning
* Spoilage of food
* Pollution
* Reduction of soil fertility
* Biowar/Bioterrorism
1. PATHOGENIC ACTIVITIES
*The bacteria cause great losses to
plant and animal popula tion by
causing several diseases. Some
important bacterial diseases of plants
and animals, including human beings
is given next
2. FOOD POISONING
Bacterial toxins present in food causes
food poisoning. This leads into nausea,
vomiting, abdominal discomfort
diarrhea and even death. The food
poisoning bacteria are Clostridium
botulinum, Salmonella enteritis,
Staphylococcus aureus etc.
3. FOOD SPOILAGE
* In favourable temperature and
humidity, bacteria can grow
luxuriantly in many food materials.
They change the flavour, appearance
and smell of food.
4. POLLUTION
Some bacteria pollute water and make
It unsuitable for drinking. Diseases like
Cholera (Vibrio cholerae), typhoid fever
Salmonellaa typhi) and bacillus
Dysentery (Shigella dysenteriae) are
Commonly transmitted by drinking
water.
5. REDUCTION OF SOIL FERTILITY
Denitrifying bacteria like Thiobacillus
denitrificans, Micrococcus denitrificans,
Pseudomonas aeroginosa convert soil
nitrates and ammonia into free
Nitrogen and thus reduce the soil
fertility.
6. BIOWAR/ BIOTERRORISM
The improved variety of infective agents
(bioweapons) are widely been used as an agent
of effective weapon of bioterrorism. The
antibiotic resistant microorganisms like Bacillus
anthracis are being produced at large scale and
when these are released at strategic locations It
leads to spread of communicable diseases like
anthrax and plague etc.
