be a spot where these labels have been detrimental on a person s view of themselves. Labeling or
stigmatizing is when someone uses a label or nickname to degrade someone who is considered
different. Insults and jokes can enforce these labels. People who are different can be labeled
something which may make them feel more insignificant about themselves, and if these labels are

In order to diagnose a child with ADHD, the child must exhibit at least 6 core symptoms and these
symptoms must cause some impairments in at least 2 setting (such as home and school), although
severe impairment in one setting may suffice (Parens and Johnston). Core symptoms of ADHD are
broken up into two categories: impulse hyperactivity and inattention. Impulse hyperactivity
symptoms include fidgeting, not staying in their seat, blurting out words, and impatience.
Inattentive symptoms include frequent careless mistakes, difficulty paying attention in activities,
and not listening when being directly spoken to. Diagnosis can occur all throughout school years
but most hyperactive children are referred for assessment in the first three grades of school (Weiss
and Hechtman). Along with the diagnosis of ADHD, certain other conditions may be diagnosed at
the same time. These are called co morbid conditions and are often found to correlate with attention
deficit. Depression and epilepsy are two of these conditions, although not everyone with ADHD

A fact touched on by author Arlie Hochschild(1979), who uses an interactionist perspective to
explain that focusing on external impressions, such as body demeanor and appearances takes
away from inner reactions at a deeper level. Here direct management of feelings challenges the
concept of acting. Therefore, while we do ultimately react in accordance to our roles and do so
with poise, how we manage to control the self to do this is followed by our feelings, which is an

that we react in these ways because of norms. Norms can be defined as expectations of right
behavior (Henslin 2015). Norms such as these can be shaped by society, government or culture.
