The number nine bus, packed full of students eager to get home, pulled into the bus
lane at Lion s Park train station. Halfway there, I thought, happy to be done with
another stressful day of classes. After most of the other passengers disembark to
board the train, those of us which stay on the buseach have our own seats.
The bus driver steps off the bus, as he does each day, to smoke a cigarette. Each
day I contemplate how the complex interplay of individuals can become simple
routine, reduced to the same exhausted ride to school every morning, matched to
the seemingly endless ride home every afternoon. I wouldn t be able to cope with
the chaos that some people enjoy, I prefer my simple, reliable routines.
Nevertheless, every day I contemplate the paths each of the passengers had to follow
for this scene to play out as it does each day. The path that inevitably leads to me
sitting on the bus and watching the driver smoke his cigarette at the same time, in the
same place, five out of seven days a week.
I look up to another familiar scene playing out beyond the Plexiglas windows of the
bus: a group of homeless men passing their days exposed to the elements. Some are
splayed out across the lawns of an adjacent office building, others are digging in the
cracks of the pavement for cigarette butts. Nothing special, the same group of men

For this assignment, I went to the Ohio State University Hillel Center and was able
to experience on campus religious life. Throughout the experience, there was
definitely a feeling of community and inclusiveness. Even though the congregation
separated into different groups for the actual service, they began the ceremony
together and ended it together. Before the groups separated for their respective
services, everyone congregated for the lighting of the candles in the lobby and after
each service, everyone congregated for kiddush before going to dinner. Despite the
fact that there were two separate services occurring at the same time, Conservative
and Reform, there did not seem to be any disdain towards the other, as was the case...
For example, those leading singing prayers could switch the tune in which the
prayer was sung to. One of the singing prayers had the tune changed in the middle.
The last prayer of the service was sung to the tune of Carmen Ohio. In several of
the clips of Shabbat services that we watched in class, we noticed that men and
women were separated. However, at the Hillel center, there was no separation;
men and women could sit together. However, in the service I went to, there were
more men than women in the congregation, but after reconvening at the end of the
services, it seemed to me that there were more men in overall attendance than
women. In observing clips in class, we also noted that in many cases, women were
dressed very conservatively and some men wore religious garb. All of the men at
the services were dressed on the dressier side of everyday clothing; most wore
yarmulke during the service, and some took it off afterwards, while some left it on. I
m assuming this has to do with differences between different sects of their religion, or
perhaps the way they were raised. The women were also dressed on the dressier
side of everyday clothing, and many were for the most part, modestly dressed. The
people at the Hillel center were also very welcoming of new people who may not

INTRODUCTION: The energy to perform exercise for periods of more than 10
minutes comes mainly from aerobic metabolism (1). VO2max is a reproducible
measure of an individual s cardiovascular system s ability to deliver the required
oxygenated blood to a large muscle mass involved in exercise (1). The determination
of an individual s VO2max is commonly used to assess levels of physical fitness, as
well as develop and monitor training programs for athletes. The submaximal tests
have an error of plus or minus 10% which makes them invalid for the purpose of
long term training studies. For clinical screening purposes the use of submaximal
prediction tests is a viable option. There are three main advantages to using
submaximal testing. Submaximal testing does not take and individual to his or her
maximal limits, which greatly reduces the chance of a cardiovascular accident,
especially in older subjects. In addition expensive laboratory equipment is not
needed, and more subjects can be screened in a given period of time.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this laboratory #3 it to acquaint the class with different
methods to estimate VO2max, and to see how these predictions compare to VO2max
values acquired during Lab #2. Laboratory #2 was canceled due to inoperative
equipment, so those comparisons cannot be made.

Justification Of Hester Prynne
The Puritans Are Justifiable In D.H. Lawrence s writing The Scarlet Letter by,
Nathaniel Hawthorne, Lawrence shares his beliefs that Hester Prynne is fully guilty
in the Puritan society for committing the sin of adultery. Lawrence believes that all
women have the ultimate goal of seducing men. He feels very strongly that Hester s
character should not have any heroic praise, and he finds ways of justifying the way
the Puritans beliefs. Lawrence uses methods of brief repetition, direct syntax, and
complacent tone to convey that Hester Prynneis guilty. D.H. Lawrence uses brief
repetition to represent that Hester is guilty of sin. Lawrence finds ways of writing
repetition in the attempt to get his point across without hesitation when he states,
Adulteress, Alpha, Abel, Adam, America (Lawrence). He is able to fully convey
that Hester is sinful with negatively connotated words that are organized in a
repetitive way. Relating Hester to Abel represents his dislike towards her as well
as shows her sin because it represents how low he views her. Abel was not an
innocent character, to say the least. Lawrence uses this comparison in a way that
flips their roles in a sense, and it draws a huge impact. Lawrence finds ways of
camouflaging the ways he uses repetition as well, Worship her there. The Woman, the
Magna Mater (Lawrence). By saying that she is a women and then writing that she is
just a fertility mother, he concludes her guilt as sinful for committing her actions and
