Western Influence In The Film Chilsu And Mansu
After watching Chilsu and Mansu (1988), the first thing that I ve noticed apart from
this film being in color was the economic development that took place in Seoul
compared to the previous films that we have seen. The image of Seoul in this film was
more recognizable to today. I also found this film to be relative modern. The filmmain
female character Jina worked at Burger King (American establishment) and is a college
student. I think she is the first female character that we ve seen in college and educated.
There was also a lot of Western influence in this film. When Chilsu and Jina went to the
movie, they went to see an American film. When they went to the club, there was
American music playing in the background. Jina takes a contemporary... Show more

affluent class. In the film, Chilsu and Mansu were both working class men in the
painting industry. They would paint buildings and billboards. Unfortunately, their job
wasn t stable and they would have difficulty finding work. Throughout the film, Chilsu
seems to never have any money and Mansu and his living situation was not the best. I
felt that Chilsu was aspiring to be apart of the affluent class. He essentially was living
a double life. When he was with Jina he was an art student that was going to America
to study continue his art studies. He would spend money that he didn t have on taking
Jina to the movies, club, etc. When Chilsu was with Mansu, he was a painting
assistant that never has money. In one scene, Chilsu needed to go pee while working
and he happened to see Jina and her mother shopping. When they were looking at
jewelry, he envisions himself in a suit introducing himself to Jina s mother. In reality,
he didn t go in to the jewelry store and when a man asks him what he was doing there
he just ran off. Towards the end of the film, Chilsu and Mansu went on top of the
billboard to vent at their frustration about being in the working class. The social realism
of this film is worth discussing. This film highlights the struggles that the working
classes had to go through. It showed the daily struggle on the common men in Korea in
the 80 s with no
The Giver, By Lois Lowry
Would you like to live in a society where anger, greed, hate and pain are eliminated? A
society where differences are nonexistent and the feelings of envy and jealousy are
extinct? It sounds wonderful, but what does this society cost its citizens? Lois Lowry
wrote The Giver, and when it adapted into the film, it is directed by Phillip Noyce. The
film takes place in a society that has eliminated the differences within people. They have
little emotion, cannot see colors, and have no memory of all the past events like war,
pain, animals, and emotions. They are all assigned jobs at a young age and Jonas is
assigned as the receiver of memory. He keeps all the memories of the past to provide
wisdom for the future. Once the current receiver of memory (the giver) gives him all of
these memories and emotions he realizes that keeping all of these things from the
community is wrong. He sees his father releasing (killing) babies and his father did not
realize he was killing them. Jonas family was caring for a child that was not mature
enough to be in the nurturing center and is eventually scheduled to be released. Jonas
took the baby out of the community, crossed the boundary and restores all the emotions
and memories to the entire population. Is a perfect, predictable, systematic society worth
sacrificing personal choice and emotional individuality? No, emotions and personal
choices give our lives purpose, drives us to become more; these things make us human.

The Marketing Strategy Of Mcdonalds
Mc Donald s Marketing Strategy McDonalds marketing strategy is aimed at the fact that
their focus is not so much on being the biggest fast food restaurant chain. It is more
focused on being the best fast food restaurant chain. Their biggest marketing factor is the
promise of being fast and convenience . Here, there are four marketingthat are used by
McDonalds which is marketing mix or also known as 4P :
1.Products marketing
McDonald s places considerable emphasis on developing a menu which customer
wants. For example, its breakfast menu, salads, Chicken McNuggets, and the McLean
Deluxe sandwich were all the examples of how the company tried to appeals to a wider
range of consumers. The perceived secret of McDonald s success is the willingness to
innovate. Typically, many ideas for new menu items come from franchisees responding
to customer demand. Filet o Fish, Drive Thrus and Playlands were all products or
concepts developed by franchisees.
Another strategy McDonalds used in product marketing is tries a few concepts
simultaneous in different parts of country. For example, McDonald s offer Halal food in
Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan and Bangladesh. ...

This is also a central part of the image building process. Sponsorship of the 1998 football
World Cup, the Premier League and the European Championships increases awareness of
McDonald s brand. However, McDonald s still follow Ray Kroc s community beliefs

community activities. According to McDonald s has become a known community
partner with Ronald McDonald Houses across the nation for the use of families whose
children are hospitalized and getting treatment far from home. This organization has

My First 13 Years Of My Life
For the first 13 years of my life I was the prototypical Christian child. I sat quietly in
church listening carefully to everything the pastor said, trying hard to follow the
guidelines set by my family and the bible, even if it was hard for me to believe what I
was being told. Not even knowing what any of it really meant, I went on following
anything and everything my ears caught. Blinded by my own fears of burning in a
fiery pit for all eternity, I became very apprehensive about what I really wanted. Those
fears caused me to keep feelings in that I desperately wanted to let out. The only
problem was I couldn t let them out because that wouldn t be the Christian thing to do. I
was to be a good Christian boy that followed the bible and not... Show more content on

I eventually became very sad I thought I would never be able to live in peace if I was gay,
but at the same time it was killing me to keep my real self bottled up every minute of
every day. It even got to a point where I thought it would just be better if I was gone.
Sometimes I would sit in my room on the floor with a bottle of pills in my hand,
contemplating whether or not I should take a hand full of them and be done with it.
Until one day I was tired of being sad and scared so I decided it was time for me to make
a change.
I went into my bathroom turned on the lights, stood in front of the mirror, looked
myself on the eyes, took a deep breath and said I m gay. I told myself there s no
denying it, there s no changing it, there s no hiding it and it s completely okay. After
finally coming to terms with my sexuality I felt a lot better it was like I was carrying
these heavy bags for a long time and one of them was lifted off my shoulders. It was a
small victory for me, but, I knew there was still more things I had to do. Over the next
few weeks, I slowly began to come out to friends and surprisingly was well received even
by the ones that were religious. I knew coming out to friends would be a lot different
than coming out to my parents so I hesitated and next thing I knew three years had gone
by. I always wanted to tell them, but I was so afraid I let it get away from me

Severtseen (1990) cited by Duxbury (2000) applies the term therapeutic communication
as the dialogue between nurse and patient to achieve goals tailored exclusively to the
patients needs. In this case dialogue is used by Mr. Comer in the form of body language
and noise to communicate his needs because of speech loss.
Nelson Jones (1990) states that facial expressions are an intrinsic way to express
emotions and eye contact is one way to show interest. The avoidance in eye contact
displayed by Mr. Comer showed his distinct lack of interest. Compounding these factors
was his facial paralysis, which made it especially difficult for me to ascertain the exact
nature of his feelings.
The nurse must be the sender and more importantly the receiver of clear information.
Patients with speech impairment or loss have a more difficult task sending the messages
they want and are sometimes unsuccessful in making themselves understood. (Arnold
Boggs 1995).
It appeared to me that Mr. Comer s cough was not only a physiological disorder caused
by his condition, but a way for him to communicate, in this case, his displeasure.
Critical analysis of this experience has pointed to the fact that I have inadequacies in my
skills, to identify covert and overt clues provided by Mr. Comer to his needs. I had
focussed too much on the presenting task to feed him,

Examples Of Relationships In The Great Gatsby
Love and Relationships the Great Gatsby
In the social jungle of human existence, there is no feeling of being alive without a
sense of identity. (Erik Erikson). Your identity is who you are, it is how you got here
and it defines where you re going. Identity can be change or manipulated by many factors
including your career, social status and relationships. Just remember that all the people in
this world haven t had the advantages that you ve had. (Great Gatsby, pg1), In the Great
Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the readers see many of the main characters undergoing a
change of identity. One of the main causes of this change in identity of these characters
is the age old trap of love.
In the first chapter of the book the reader is introduced to Nick Caraway the narrator of
the book. Through his eyes we see the change in identity of many of the characters. We
also witness the change of his identity as he starts to mix with his cousin (daisy) and her
husband (Tom). While Nick dabbles in the old money scene he notices just how vibrant a

Comparing Machiavelli And Sun Tzu s The Art Of War
Sun Tzu s work is the most powerful as it requires one to evaluate a plethora of
conditions in warfare. I will first discuss the antithesis, between Machiavelli and Sun
Tzu s arguments, followed by the changes that have influenced warfare. I believe the
controversies between the different political views of power as well as the technological
changes are important as they change and affect the way in which security has played
out. San Tzu s The Art of Warwas written under the premise of prevailing in conflict,
whereas Machiavelli wrote on ruling and maintaining power. The reason I believe San
Tzu s work to be the stronger one out of the two is because there is an emphasis on
knowing. Sun Tzubases waron knowing when and who to fight, he only believes in
participating in a fight you are capable of winning. Sun Tzu effectively uses
intelligence in his work as he evaluates the five different conditions that affect the way
one fights a war (Tzu, p. 42). These five conditions are crucial to the text as the explain
the strategic way of understanding not only one s enemy, but also the playing field (Tzu,
p. 42)1.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Machiavelli saw the leader as strong and said that men will love at their free will
however they show their fear at the will of the Prince (Machiavelli, p.71)2.
Machiavelli believed in his own power and saw every great leader to have a hero and
he wanted to be that hero for many people. However, he saw this concept of fear as a
manipulation tactic in order to have a cohesive and strong military. This is
contradictory to Tzu s work, as he saw his military as strong by force but he wanted
trust without fear (Tzu, p. 43)1. Sun Tzu saw fear as a force that could cause distrust
between the leader and his people, he states that the people need to have the same goal
as the leader and they will together share life and death (Tzu, p. 43)1. This is very
important because like the book states,
How Did The Second Industrial Revolution Change American...
In post Civil War America, the Second Industrial Revolution changed society in all
aspects. Technological innovation, particularly, allowed for aggressive westward
expansion and the creation of the American millionaire encouraged American settlers
further. Expansionism was merciless, destroying local environments and causing
sporadic negotiation with the Amerian Indian groups that were the first to experience the
negative effects of industrialization. A combination of government corruption, changing
policies, and aggressive expansionism led to conflicts between white settlers and
American Indian groups. American Indian policy in the US had been ever changing but
as westward expansion began the reservation system, rather than cohabitation, was the
most popular method for the theoretical protection of native groups. Disregarding the
shortcomings of the reservation system, American Indians could live and practice their
beliefs as they always... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It did, however, further exacerbate already existing issues. The flawed reservation system
did more than frustrate American Indians; many died from lack of resources that were
promised to them. The treaties that allowed whites to take native homelands often
assured that on reservations, American Indians would be provided with resources and
money. The reality, however, was that federal agents tasked with overseeing reservations
often pocketed the funds and didn t care to ensure other resources were provided. As a
result, many American Indian groups were forced to leave the reservations or face
starvation, but the damage wrought by expansionism often meant depleted resources
even off reserved land. The conditions on reservations and aggressive expansionism
encouraged the Ghost Dance movement, which was a spiritual practice that sought to
resurrect bison populations and push whites back to

Richards, D et all (2007) Furthermore there are many reasons why people first start
using drugs, but most are centered around pleasure or the expectation of increased
efficiency or creativity. Initially most substance produce an effect such as euphoria or
relief from anxiety, sadness and tension. This may be intensified by social
circumstances that the individual confronts and many of the substances allow him to
forget adverse life circumstances. In addition alcohol or the use of drugs can also
give self confidence and access to a new group of friends. In time many substances
create new problems, difficulties are ignored, minimized or wrongly attributed to

disadvantage of continuing to use them. The addicts often describe their drug or
alcohol use to uncontrollable urges and cravings , craving is a desire for the substance
and an urge is the internal drive or the stimulus to act on the desire, if a craving cannot
be satisfied, for example understanding , an individual may turn to another such as
substance use. Richards, D et all (2007) The psychological approaches to addiction are
based on behavioural factors, which suggest the frequency of a behaviour is influenced
by its consequences or reinforces, and the likelihood of behaviour being reinforced
depends on the balance between rewards and punishments. Family and social
King David Accomplishments
Introduction According to the New Living Translation (1996) King David lived
halfway between the lives of Abraham and Jesus, in addition to becoming one of the
most important leaders for Israel and a man after God s own heart ( 1 Samuel 13:14).
David s place of birth was Bethlehem, City of DavidJerusalem where he grew up as a
shepherd, but he is better known for his youthful triumph over Goliath, as well as
being a poet, musician, soldier, and a king (Holy Bible, NLT, 1996). King David died
at the age of seventy after ruling for forty years. King David wrestled with sin, such as
adultery, family disorder, and rebellion on a national level, however he also
experienced great accomplishments as well. One great achievement was the unification
of Israel. Then all the tribes of Israel went to David at Hebron and told him, We are all
members of your family. For a long time, even while Saulwas our King, you were the one
who really led Israel. And the Lord has told you, You will be the shepherd of my people
Israel. You will be their leader (2 Samuel 5:3). It is here that David makes a covenant

David then led his troops to Jerusalem to fight against the Jebusites (2 Samuel 5:6).
Jerusalem becomes a historical and archaeological site when David captured the city
and made it the capital of Israel. Archaeological evidence was located by a Hebrew
University professor Yosef Garfinkel that authenticated the rule of King David. Objects
were located in a ruin called Khirbet Qeiyafa, a fortified border city in the Kingdom of
Judah adjacent to the Valley of Elah, less than twenty miles southwest of Jerusalem and
five miles west of Gush Etzion (Gedalyaha, para 2, 2012). It is here that items such as,
pottery, stone, metal tools, art, and ritual objects were located (Gedalyaha, para3,
Wal Mart s Core Competencies Essay
There is a growing body of literature that recognises the importance of Resource Based
View (RBV) in strategic management. This paper attempts to identify Wal Mart s
core competencies, applying RBV literature such as VRIO framework with supporting
evidence from Wal Mart Stores in 2003 case study. RBV suggests that each firm
acquires a collection of capabilities, which can be mobilised by strategists to gain
competitive advantage (McGee et al., 2005). In other words, a firm can be viewed as
a bundle of resources, which are the drivers of strategy and growth in a firm. When
creating a unique product, a firm also develops a unique competence (Mintzberg et al.,
2009). Prahalad and Hamel (1990) ascertained that three tests could be used to
determine a core competence. Foremost, a core competence should provide a promising
access to a variety of markets. Second, a core competence would make a substantial
contribution to the end product in view of customers. Lastly, a core competence should
be unique, hard to imitate. In fulfilling the three tests, a resource would be a core
competence of a firm. Moreover, to be a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA),
Barney (1991) stated that a corporation s resources should consist of four characteristics:
(i) valuable, in adding value creating strategy to the product, not in the monetary sense,
(ii) rare, in view of the business current market position, (iii) imperfectly imitable and (iv)
non substitutable. Furthermore, a firm s
Healthcare Leadership Challenges
The healthcare system is an ever expanding, dynamic and complex industry that requires
strong leadership to steer and direct employees performances by utilizing flexible, strong
and transformational planning system and management of staff strengths, core values
and talents (Reeves et al, 2013). These leaders are often faced with enormous challenge
of creating culture, strategies, modes of operation and tweaking the status quo in order to
meet the Institute of Medicines goals and expectations of providing quality, and effective
patient centered cost effective care on time. Human resource challenges in the healthcare
industry are numerous and require a lot of time and money to tackle effectively in order
to bring about the desired healthcare delivery service (Arnold, 2010). From the 2010
National Center for Healthcare LeadershipReport, it was discovered that lack of talent
managementand continuous professional training and development constitute 25 percent
of chief nursing officers leaving their positions, with 62 percent planning to do so in the
near future. Evidence from the same report also show that there was a significant
increase to 18 percent of chief executive officers in healthcare who left their positions in
2009 compared to previous years. This challenge can, however, be addressed if healthcare

The Canadian Senior Housing Market
The Canadian senior housing market is very broad, both economically and physically.
Financial and medical needs have shaped the various different types of senior housing,
resulting in benefits and disadvantages of each type. The senior housing market has
had many changes over the past few years, due to the influx of baby boomers retiring.
These retired baby boomers have started to rapidly shape the housing market not only
for seniors, but for society in general. Senior housing choices influence the activity of
the housing market, affecting both supply and demand. There are various types of
senior housing options available to the different financial and medical needs of
seniors. The various types of housing include ageing at home, senior s apartments,
long term care/nursing homes, and retirement homes (ORCA, 2013). All of these
different options have varying degrees of care offered to seniors, depending on their
needs. The first is called standard space, where seniors receive a low level of care
approximately 1.5 hours of care per day and costing an average $1,995 per month.
Contrary to standard spaces, heavy care spaces provide the resident with extra care
every day but, they pay a premium for this luxury costing $3,477 per month. Heavy
care is usually reserved for seniors with Alzheimer s, Dementia or mobility restrictions.
The most popular form of care for seniors is 24 hour call bell, accounting for
approximately 93.9% in senior housing. This type of care allows
Types of Head Gear
Types of Head Gear Implemented/ Effectiveness
Within the game of baseball, only select players are required to wear headgear. These
include batters and back catchers. The proposal for new pitching caps will be explored
within the next section, while the effectiveness of batting helmets and catcher helmets
/masks is the focal point of this section.
We will begin with a brief overview of the rationale of the helmet. Helmets are ultimately
designed to lessen the energy resulting from a massive impact and to disperse the force
over a larger surface area.(21) The features that govern effective helmet functioning
include, the liner foam, its thickness and density, and the outer shell stiffness.(21)
Batting Helmets
Goldsmith and Kabo conducted an experiment to establish the success of available
batting headgear in 1982, as there was no conclusive understanding concerning the
protective ability of these proposed safety mechanisms at that point in time. When
running a liner test, they observed that the present materials being used only slightly
contributed to the dissipation of energy (at most 10% dissipation of the original energy
value).(22) In further tests, they discovered that in fact, it was the bending of the outer
shell that assisted in energy absorption through its ability to elastically deform. Inhibition
of elastic deformation caused acceleration levels placed on the head to be largely
increased. This study concluded that although the present day helmets had
The Meaningless Relationships In The Waste Land By T. S....
Abstract:
This paper explains the changing human relationships due to the changes that have
happened recently. I will utilize three types of relationships, love ,marriage and
homosexual relationship that T.S.Eliot mobilized in the poem The Waste land .It is
through the sections of the poem each particular episode delineates one fact about the
trivial and unsuccessful relationship .The representation of these relationships is
unproductive and unfruitful.

The Meaningless Relationship:
In the Modernized and materialistic societies that lack hope and a sense of significance,
various aspects of life have lost their meaning and have been reduced to trivial and

Beowulf Today Essay
Beowulf Today The Anglo Saxons were a group of Germanic people who were the
origins of Great Britain, back in the early 5th century, lasting until the 11th century,
until they evolved into a different peoples giving a foundation for Britain that is seen
later on in the following hundreds of years. These people were incredibly proud, and
held very strong beliefs relating to their religion, camaraderie, and strength. Anglo
Saxons were pagans, meaning that they had practiced a non Christian religion; usually
some form of polytheism, and this gave them a basis for their beliefs. They also had a
very strong sense of camaraderie, moreso seen in the idea of comitatus, which is a
strong sense of loyalty between a lady/lord and their subjects. There is also a strong
basis in strength, such as that a lord who has a very strong group of subjects beneath

how Grendel filled nights with horror and quickly commanded a boat fitted out,
proclaiming that he d go to that famous king, would sail across the sea to Hrothgar,
now when help was needed (Beowulf 3) This quote states that Beowulf is the strongest
of the Geats and stronger than anyone in the world, would take a boat and sail to Herot
and assist Hrothgar in killing Grendel. This idea and belief in the power of strength can
be seen with how the American military is considered one of if not the strongest
fighting force in the world, and can be shipped out at a moments notice to anywhere in
the world to assist a weak country, or beat back hostile actions from foreign countries or
terrorist

Comparing The Nile, Mesopotamia, And Indus Civilizations
Comparing the Nile, Mesopotamia, and Indus Civilizations The civilizations of the Nile
River valley, the Mesopotamia valley, and Indus Valley marked human progress toward
fixed settlements and the development of a rich culture. These civilizations shared many
characteristics that contributed to their success. What made these civilizations unique
were the contributions that each one gave to the world. They contributed their own ideas
and accomplishments in the areas of religion, science, and mathematics. These
contributions defined each civilizationand how they would be remembered, as well as,
their importance to the world. These three civilizations created cultures that built
societies and people for future generations. Starting around 3100 BC they began. The
rule of King Menes began the Egyptian civilization by unifying the Upper and Lower
Egyptinto one kingdom (Duiker and Speilvogel 17). The Mesopotamian civilization
located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, began with the Sumerians people
(Duiker and Speilvogel 9). Also, in now what is modern day India, another civilization
began. It was located in the Indus River Valley with the Harappan people (Duiker and
Speilvogel 38). Three early civilizations laid the foundation for what would be the
progression of future civilizations, all of which would greatly influenced the world. All
of these places had consecutive civilizations that eventually collapsed, even though each
preceding civilization influenced
White Tailed Deer Research Paper
White tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have historical significance throughout the
state of Ohio. Ohio s ancient civilizations relied heavily on white tailed deer for food,
tools, and clothing. Deer were attracted to the region because of the agricultural practices
of Native Americans such as growing corn and the prevalence of hard mast . The
population of white tailed deerwas healthy prior to European settlement, as predators such
as the North American cougar (Puma concolor), eastern timber wolf (Canis lupus
lycaon), and native americans kept the population under control. There are an estimated
500,000 white tailed deer in Ohio, the species can be found in all 88 counties.
Populations today are managed by a regulated huntingseason. (Hulbert 1910) The
objective of the study is to determine the age, sex, and distinguishing characteristics of
white tailed deer that are in both areas... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The total amount of deer seen on camera one was twenty total. (Fig. 3) Camera one
was in a secluded area of the forest and captured two different bucks. One was believed to
be a couple years old with a small set of antlers while the second buck was much larger
both in body and antler size is believed to be older. The deer varied in size and all
stayed within a couple yards from one another. Both cameras experienced interference
from bypassers who noticed that the cameras were there.

Should Football Be Illegal Research Paper
Professional football should be made illegal because. . . Americas favorite pastime time
sport, is also known to be a killer. Football, at any given age level, has the potential to
seriously cause bodily harm to the individual participating in the sport. This has been
scientifically proven, yet Americans continually glorify this sport, and thousands of
parents enroll their children into youth leagues across the country. The portrayal of
masculinity within the sport gives our youth distasteful models, along with serious brain
trauma like CTE, and concussions all add up for the reasons this sport should be made
illegal. The National Football League, or the NFL, was established in 1920. Since then it
has become a world renown sport, and has grabbed millions of viewers attention on
the weekends. The likes of Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Vince Lombardi, Dan
Marino, and LaDainian Tomlinson are all household names that any given person
should and would know. One of the main attractions to the sport is the Super Bowl.
Thirty two teams fight for two spots, and the chance to take home the famous super
bowl ring. According to the LA Times, the 2017 Super Bowl, aired by FoxSports,
racked in 111.3 million viewers. Thats 111.3 million viewers watching full grown men,
hit each other as hard as possible for sixty minuets in order to claim dominance of that
season. The glorification of these athletes can bee seen with the attention they receive
from younger fans. Kids plaster life size
What Role Did Religion Play In The Civil Rights Movement...
What role did religion play in the civil rights movement? Were the African American
churches a provoking force in the call for equal rights or were they a calming eddy?
Most Americans in today s society have very little knowledge of what exactly occurred
during the civil rights movement or what sparked undeniable passion of African
Americans for change. In this paper, I will be analyzing the influences of black religion
on the civil rights movement through the themes of the three books; The Black Church
in the African American Experience, Black Church in the Sixties, and The Origins of the
Civil Rights Movement: Black Communities Organizing for Change. The first book I
analyzed, The Origins of the Civil Rights Movement: Black Communities... Show more

Through Morris s analyzation of the modern black condition, he argues that black
American s have always fought for the rights possessed by others that they believed were
due to them as well. He argues that churches played a critical role in the organization and
implementation of this belief within the civil rights movement. Morris argues that local
movement centers (the black church) were leading cause for the rapid development of
continuous struggles in southern communities. In Morris s view, the modern black
struggle for equality was made possible not by universal discontent among African
Americans but by black institutions, especially black churches. Morris also argues that
the movement s leaders benefited and were influenced by religious institutions such as
Highlander Folk School and The Fellowship of Reconciliation. Morris wrote that these
institutions funded and supported many of the movements leaders by helping organize
and plan protests. Furthermore, these institutions helped the movements leaders gain
publicity by helping spreading each of their messages across the

  • 1. The Challenge of Essay Writing: Overcoming the Struggle Essay writing can be a daunting task for many individuals, requiring a unique combination of skills, creativity, and time. Western Influence In The Film Chilsu And Mansu After watching Chilsu and Mansu (1988), the first thing that I ve noticed apart from this film being in color was the economic development that took place in Seoul compared to the previous films that we have seen. The image of Seoul in this film was more recognizable to today. I also found this film to be relative modern. I felt that Chilsu was aspiring to be apart of the affluent class. He essentially was living a double life. When he was with Jina he was an art student that was going to America to study continue his art studies. He would spend money that he didn t have on taking Jina to the movies, club, etc. When Chilsu was with Mansu, he was a painting assistant that never has money. • 3. The Giver, By Lois Lowry Would you like to live in a society where anger, greed, hate and pain are eliminated? A society where differences are nonexistent and the feelings of envy and jealousy are extinct? It sounds wonderful, but what does this society cost its citizens? Lois Lowry wrote The Giver, and when it adapted into the film, it is directed by Phillip Noyce. The film takes place in a society that has eliminated the differences within people. They have little emotion, cannot see colors, and have no memory of all the past events like war, pain, animals, and emotions. They are all assigned jobs at a young age and Jonas is assigned as the receiver of memory. He keeps all the memories of the past to provide wisdom for the future. Once the current receiver of memory (the giver) gives him all of these memories and emotions he realizes that keeping all of these things from the community is wrong. He sees his father releasing (killing) babies and his father did not realize he was killing them. Jonas family was caring for a child that was not mature enough to be in the nurturing center and is eventually scheduled to be released. Jonas took the baby out of the community, crossed the boundary and restores all the emotions and memories to the entire population. Is a perfect, predictable, systematic society worth sacrificing personal choice and emotional individuality? No, emotions and personal choices give our lives purpose, drives us to become more; these things make us human. The intended

I sat quietly in church listening carefully to everything the pastor said, trying hard to follow the guidelines set by my family and the bible, even if it was hard for me to believe what I was being told. Not even knowing what any of it really meant, I went on following anything and everything my ears caught. Blinded by my own fears of burning in a fiery pit for all eternity, I became very apprehensive about what I really wanted. Sometimes I would sit in my room on the floor with a bottle of pills in my hand, contemplating whether or not I should take a hand full of them and be done with it. Until one day I was tired of being sad and scared so I decided it was time for me to make a change. I went into my bathroom turned on the lights, stood in front of the mirror, looked myself on the eyes, took a deep breath and said I m gay. I told myself there s no denying it, there s no changing it, there s no hiding it and it s completely okay. It was a small victory for me, but, I knew there was still more things I had to do. Over the next few weeks, I slowly began to come out to friends and surprisingly was well received even by the ones that were religious. I knew coming out to friends would be a lot different than coming out to my parents so I hesitated and next thing I knew three years had gone by. I always wanted to tell them, but I was so afraid I let it get away from me

Severtseen (1990) cited by Duxbury (2000) applies the term therapeutic communication as the dialogue between nurse and patient to achieve goals tailored exclusively to the patients needs. In this case dialogue is used by Mr. Comer in the form of body language and noise to communicate his needs because of speech loss. Nelson Jones (1990) states that facial expressions are an intrinsic way to express emotions and eye contact is one way to show interest. The avoidance in eye contact displayed by Mr. Comer showed his distinct lack of interest. Compounding these factors was his facial paralysis, which made it especially difficult for me to ascertain the exact nature of his feelings. The nurse must be the sender and more importantly the receiver of clear information. Patients with speech impairment or loss have a more difficult task sending the messages they want and are sometimes unsuccessful in making themselves understood. (Arnold Boggs 1995). It appeared to me that Mr. Comer s cough was not only a physiological disorder caused by his condition, but a way for him to communicate, in this case, his displeasure. Critical analysis of this experience has pointed to the fact that I have inadequacies in my skills, to identify covert and overt clues provided by Mr. Comer to his needs. • 9. Comparing Machiavelli And Sun Tzu s The Art Of War Sun Tzu s work is the most powerful as it requires one to evaluate a plethora of conditions in warfare. I will first discuss the antithesis, between Machiavelli and Sun Tzu s arguments, followed by the changes that have influenced warfare. I believe the controversies between the different political views of power as well as the technological changes are important as they change and affect the way in which security has played out. San Tzu s The Art of Warwas written under the premise of prevailing in conflict, whereas Machiavelli wrote on ruling and maintaining power. The reason I believe San Tzu s work to be the stronger one out of the two is because there is an emphasis on knowing. Sun Tzubases waron knowing when and who to fight, he only believes in participating in a fight you are capable of winning. Sun Tzu effectively uses intelligence in his work as he evaluates the five different conditions that affect the way one fights a war (Tzu, p. 42). These five conditions are crucial to the text as the explain the strategic way of understanding not only one s enemy, but also the playing field (Tzu, p. 42)1.... Machiavelli believed in his own power and saw every great leader to have a hero and he wanted to be that hero for many people. However, he saw this concept of fear as a manipulation tactic in order to have a cohesive and strong military. This is contradictory to Tzu s work, as he saw his military as strong by force but he wanted trust without fear (Tzu, p. 43)1. Sun Tzu saw fear as a force that could cause distrust between the leader and his people, he states that the people need to have the same goal as the leader and they will together share life and death (Tzu, p. 43)1. This is very important because like the book states,

A combination of government corruption, changing policies, and aggressive expansionism led to conflicts between white settlers and American Indian groups. The treaties that allowed whites to take native homelands often assured that on reservations, American Indians would be provided with resources and money. The reality, however, was that federal agents tasked with overseeing reservations often pocketed the funds and didn t care to ensure other resources were provided. As a result, many American Indian groups were forced to leave the reservations or face starvation, but the damage wrought by expansionism often meant depleted resources even off reserved land. The conditions on reservations and aggressive expansionism encouraged the Ghost Dance movement, which was a spiritual practice that sought to resurrect bison populations and push whites back to

  • 13. Wal Mart s Core Competencies Essay There is a growing body of literature that recognises the importance of Resource Based View (RBV) in strategic management. This paper attempts to identify Wal Mart s core competencies, applying RBV literature such as VRIO framework with supporting evidence from Wal Mart Stores in 2003 case study. RBV suggests that each firm acquires a collection of capabilities, which can be mobilised by strategists to gain competitive advantage (McGee et al., 2005). In other words, a firm can be viewed as a bundle of resources, which are the drivers of strategy and growth in a firm. When creating a unique product, a firm also develops a unique competence (Mintzberg et al., 2009). Prahalad and Hamel (1990) ascertained that three tests could be used to determine a core competence. Foremost, a core competence should provide a promising access to a variety of markets. Second, a core competence would make a substantial contribution to the end product in view of customers. Lastly, a core competence should be unique, hard to imitate. In fulfilling the three tests, a resource would be a core competence of a firm. Moreover, to be a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA), Barney (1991) stated that a corporation s resources should consist of four characteristics: (i) valuable, in adding value creating strategy to the product, not in the monetary sense, (ii) rare, in view of the business current market position, (iii) imperfectly imitable and (iv) non substitutable. The proposal for new pitching caps will be explored within the next section, while the effectiveness of batting helmets and catcher helmets /masks is the focal point of this section. We will begin with a brief overview of the rationale of the helmet. Helmets are ultimately designed to lessen the energy resulting from a massive impact and to disperse the force over a larger surface area.(21) The features that govern effective helmet functioning include, the liner foam, its thickness and density, and the outer shell stiffness.(21) Batting Helmets Goldsmith and Kabo conducted an experiment to establish the success of available batting headgear in 1982, as there was no conclusive understanding concerning the protective ability of these proposed safety mechanisms at that point in time. When running a liner test, they observed that the present materials being used only slightly contributed to the dissipation of energy (at most 10% dissipation of the original energy value).(22) In further tests, they discovered that in fact, it was the bending of the outer shell that assisted in energy absorption through its ability to elastically deform. Inhibition of elastic deformation caused acceleration levels placed on the head to be largely increased. This study concluded that although the present day helmets had

Were the African American churches a provoking force in the call for equal rights or were they a calming eddy? Most Americans in today s society have very little knowledge of what exactly occurred during the civil rights movement or what sparked undeniable passion of African Americans for change. In this paper, I will be analyzing the influences of black religion on the civil rights movement through the themes of the three books; The Black Church in the African American Experience, Black Church in the Sixties, and The Origins of the Civil Rights Movement: Black Communities Organizing for Change.
