This document discusses seven segment displays and decoders. Seven segment displays use 7 LEDs labeled a-h to display digits 0-9 by turning on different combinations of LEDs. There are two types of displays - common anode and common cathode - depending on how the LEDs are connected. Seven segment decoder ICs like the 7446 and 7448 are used to drive the displays. They convert binary coded decimal (BCD) input to activate the correct LEDs to display a number. The 7446 is for common anode displays and the 7448 is for common cathode displays.
