ITC Ltd. has pioneered agroforestry practices in India through large-scale commercial plantations that integrate trees and agricultural crops. Their model plants eucalyptus trees in paired rows at high densities of 2000 trees/ha while still allocating 75% of land for crops. This doubles farmers' incomes compared to conventional block planting. Through 158,000 ha of social forestry since 1992, ITC meets its wood needs sustainably while creating rural employment and offsetting carbon emissions. Scaling this agroforestry model across India's 75M ha of rain-fed land could meet pulpwood demand and improve livelihoods through enhanced and stabilized production.
This presentation provides an overview of a field-based practical exercise that allows students in forestry, ecology and natural resources to develop their understanding of forest stand dynamics. The exercise involves measurement of key tree growth parameters in four even-aged, single-species plantation stands of different age but occupying sites with similar soil and environmental characteristics. The selected stands represent key stages in stand development, from establishment to rotation age for fibre production. In the field, students work in small teams to gather data from an equal number of plots within each stand. Tree parameters include top height, crown diameter, live crown ratio and diameter at breast height. In addition, information on stand density and understorey vegetation is collected. Plot size and number can be varied to suit the constraints of class size and available time, though circular plots of 100 m2 are recommended. In the classroom, data are pooled and analysis focuses on presenting tree and vegetation changes through time. The simplest way of interpreting the data is to prepare graphs and charts for each of the parameters, though more advanced statistical interpretations are possible. The project as outlined here can be modified to meet the needs of different groups, and has been successfully used in undergraduate teaching of silviculture and forest ecology, as well as in postgraduate courses in natural resources management.

KMDP has built up rich knowledge and experience as regards good practice forage production and preservation for smallholder, medium and large scale dairy farms (from seed to feed). In addition to that, it has successfully piloted commercialization of quality forages and of forage contracting services. This was achieved through the SPEN model and the concept of “maize train” (i.e. mechanized agricultural contracting services for maize production, harvesting and silage making), and by facilitating introduction of innovative machinery for making baled silages. Through replication and upscaling, this will ensure enhanced access of quality forages for small medium and large-scale dairy farms.
In 2018 KMDP-II also started a pilot on introduction of feed rationing software to help optimizing total rations and margin over feeds. KMDP participates in sector platforms that discuss forage availability in Kenya and supported the National Fodder Conference in Nakuru in December 2017 and the Animal Production Society in Nanyuki in March 2018

An increasing multitude of insect pests and pathogens is targeting indigenous trees of natural forests, agroforestry systems, and exotic trees in planted forests in Africa. This is raising major concerns for a continent already challenged by adaptations to climate change, as it threatens a vital resource for food security of rural communities, economic growth, and ecosystem conservation. The accidental introduction through trade of non‐native species in particular is accelerating, and it adds to the damage to tree‐based landscapes by native pests and diseases. Old‐time and new invaders heavily impact planted forests of exotic eucalypts, pines, and acacias, and are spreading quickly across African regions. But many non‐native pathogens are recently found affecting important indigenous trees.

With an extension of 2.1 million ha, the Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR) in Petén, Guatemala is the largest protected area in Central America. To reconcile forest conservation and socio-economic development, community forest concessions were created in its Multiple Use Zone (MUZ) in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Operated by a community forest enterprise (CFE), and with a cycle of 25 years, the concessions grant usufruct rights to local communities on an area of about 400,000 ha. Currently, nine concessions are active, while the contracts of two concessions were cancelled and the management plan of another suspended.

2. • World-over the common practice for growing tree plantation (Pulpwood) on
large scale is to plant with a single species.
• On the other hand, mixed and agro-forestry plantations are very rare in
occurrence (except for Coffee, Tea, Coconut, Areca nut, Palm oil plantation etc)
• A lot of research is done on planting geometry involving trees and crops
but large-scale commercial Agro-Forestry plantations are not common.
World scenario
3. ITC Plantation - A Case Study
• ITC Paperboards & Specialty Papers Division, Unit: Bhadrachalam, produces 320,000 tonnes
of pulp with 1200,000 tonnes of wood per annum
• To meet the wood requirement, the company embarked
on Social / Farm forestry programme.
• ITC’s strategy is to raise pulpwood plantations
commensurate with wood consumption.
• The Pioneering Tree Improvement Programme on Eucalyptus,
Casuarina and Leucaena was launched in 1989
which resulted into release of improved clones
- popularly known as “ITC Bhadrachalam clones”
• Selection and breeding along with
Root trainer technology was employed
for improving the productivity of plantations
in India.
• The survival percentage of clonal plantations is more than
95 compared to 40 to 60% of seedling based plantations.
• The productivity range from 20 to 58 t/ha/yr compared to
6 to 10 t/ha/yr from seedling origin plantations.
4. • 107 Eucalyptus , 12 Subabul and 15 Casuarina site specific and disease
resistant clones were developed.
• New generation hybrids were also developed with higher productivity and
adaptability.
• To ensure availability of high quality, genetically pure planting material to the
farmers a “State of the Art Sapling” production centre with Israeli technology
was established with a capacity of 25 Million saplings per year.

Thus, Agro-forestry with innovative planting geometry
will be a true sustainable model leading to best
sustainable practice in India.
