This document provides an overview of the course Forest Mensuration and Biometrics. It will be a 3 credit course offered in the 3rd semester of the B.Sc Forestry program at Purbanchal University College of Environment and Forestry. In the classroom, data are pooled and analysis focuses on presenting tree and vegetation changes through time. The simplest way of interpreting the data is to prepare graphs and charts for each of the parameters, though more advanced statistical interpretations are possible. The project as outlined here can be modified to meet the needs of different groups, and has been successfully used in undergraduate teaching of silviculture and forest ecology, as well as in postgraduate courses in natural resources management.

So we were tasked to write scientific papers about the five ecosystems which we have sampled namely: Forest, Grassland, Stream, Coastal Marine, and Mangrove Ecosystems. But then since it was such a handful assignment, our teacher agreed that we can pick only two of these ecosystems that we'll make a scientific paper about and I chose Grassland and Coastal Marine Ecosystems.

Pruning is a costly silvicultural operation and allows the production of high value timber. Effect of pruning on black pine and especially on Anatolian black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold subsp. pallasina) is not well known. The objective of the study was to evaluate pruning effects on diameter and height growth of Anatolian black pine. Pruned and the control treatments were carried out using 20 year old black pine plantation in Çorum providence of Turkey. Three pruning treatments were applied in 2004, 2009 and 2016 and diameter and height growths of trees were measured. Each pruning was done from the bottom to include one third of the crown. At the beginning of the study (first pruning) and after 5 years of the first pruning no difference was observed for DBH and height growth. However, diameter and height growth became important after 12 years of pruning between pruned and control stands. Results show that pruning could increase diameter growth and height of Anatolian black pine stands. To better understand, further detailed studies must be carried out investigating site effects, plant density and environmental variations.

➢ The word mensuration is derived from the Latin word mensura which means measure.
➢ It is an art and science of locating, measuring and calculating the length of lines, areas of
planes and volumes of solids.

6. 1.1 Definition of Forest Mensuration
➢ Forest mensuration deals with the determination of the volume of logs, trees and stands, and
with the study of increment and yield (Graves, 1906)
➢ Forest mensuration is that branch of forestry which deals with the determination of
dimensions (i.e. diameter, height, volume etc), form, age and increment of single trees, stands
or whole woods, either standing or after felling (Chaturvedi and Khanna, 1986).
➢ Forest mensuration is the determination of dimensions, form, weight, growth, and age of
trees individually or collectively, and of the dimensions of their products (Helms 1998)

➢ Forest mensuration involves all stakeholders i.e. Labors, buyers, sellers, contractors, planners,
managers/foresters and researchers.
➢ So, forest mensuration has a very wide scope.
➢ It comes into play every time the wood is sold, converted or used.
➢ Applicable to any forest measurement problems of wildlife management, watershed management,
insect and disease incidence, recreation, tourism and in fact, many of the mensurational aspects of
multiple use forestry.
➢ Forest Mensuration is the application of measurement principles to obtain quantifiable information
for forest management decision making.

• Accuracy of a measurement is a measure of how close the measured value is to the
true value of the quantity.
• Accuracy refers to how close an observations, are to being correct.

instruments and formula used.
