What is sentences? 
A set of words that is complete 
in itself, typically containing a 
subject and predicate, 
conveying a statement.

SUBJECT PREDICATE 
Sana plays tennis.
Predicate 
What is Predicate ? 
The part of a sentence or 
clause containing a verb and 
stating something about the 
subject.
Simple Sentence 
A simple sentence, also called an 
independent clause, contains a 
subject and a verb, and it 
expresses a complete thought. 
Examples : 
 He runs. 
 Ali reads book.
Compound Sentence 
A compound sentence contains two 
independent clauses joined by a 
coordinator (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So) 
(Helpful hint: The first letter of each of the 
coordinators spells FANBOYS.) Except for 
very short sentences, coordinators are 
always preceded by a comma. 
Examples : 
 Ali reads book ,but Ahmad reads novel. 
 My friend gave me a lift ,because it was raining.
Complex Sentence 
A complex sentence has an independent 
clause joined by one or more dependent 
clauses. A complex sentence always has a 
subordinator (Because, Since, After, Although, 
When and many others) or a relative pronoun 
(That, Who, Which). 
Examples : 
 There are dreams ,that cannot die. 
 Although my friend invited me to a party, I do 
not want to go.
Compound complex Sentence 
A complex-compound sentence is made from 
two independent clauses and one or more 
dependent clauses. 
Examples : 
 After Ali eats breakfast, he goes to work 
or he goes shopping. 
 While Ali reads a book, he listens to the 
radio and he eats potato chips.
