BUILDING SECURITY
SECURITY & BUILDING SECURITY
• Security is freedom from, or
resilience against, potential
harm (or other unwanted
coercive change) from
external forces
• Home security is both the
security hardware in place on
a property as well as personal
security practices.
WHY DO WE NEED SECURITY
• With the increase in Urbanization, the influx of people into cities increased
drastically and since these people are from diverse backgrounds, we see
social disorganization in society
• It provides both motive and opportunity for various crimes like burglary,
assault and battery, murder, arson, vandalism etc.,
WHY DO WE NEED SECURITY
• The FBI reported that in the USA,
1.7 million homes were
burglarized in 2014.
• The same report shows that an
estimated loss of $3.9 billion was
suffered by the victims in the
same year.
• Overall, when the average value
was applied to the estimated
number of burglaries, the average
dollar loss per burglary offense
was $2,251
HOME SECURITY
Home security mainly involves 3 things
• Security systems (doors, lockers, lighting, fences etc.,)
• Alarm systems (motion sensors, heat sensors, smoke detectors etc.,)
• Personal security measures (ensuring fenestrations are closed, alarm
systems are active etc.,)
PHYSICAL SECURITY
Physical security systems for homes are generally intended to:
• Deter potential intruders (e.g. warning signs and perimeter markings)
• Detect intrusions and monitor/record intruders (e.g. intruder alarms and
CCTV systems); and
• Trigger appropriate incident responses (e.g. by security guards and police)
PHYSICAL SECURITY
• Physical barriers such as fences,
walls, and vehicle barriers act as the
outermost layer of security
• Tall fencing, topped with barbed
wire, razor wire or metal spikes are
often emplaced on the perimeter of
a property, generally with some
type of signage that warns people
not to attempt to enter
CPTED
• Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a multi-
disciplinary approach to deterring criminal behaviour through
environmental design
• CPTED strategies rely upon the ability to influence offender decisions that
precede criminal acts
• It has 3 main concepts
Prevention is better than cure - Desiderius Erasmus
NATURAL SURVEILLANCE
The purpose of natural surveillance is to show the potential offenders of the
risk of committing a crime. It involves:
• Designing streets to increase pedestrian and bicycle traffic
• Placing windows overlooking sidewalks and parking lots
• Utilizing curved streets with multiple view points to multiple houses'
entrances
NATURAL SURVEILLANCE
• Not using shrubbery taller than
1 M – an aesthetically appealing
way to provide security
• Create landscape designs that
provide surveillance, especially
in proximity to designated points
of entry and opportunistic points
of entry
NATURAL ACCESS CONTROL
• Use a single, clearly identifiable, point of entry
• Use structures to divert people to reception areas
• Restrict entries to sensitive areas like guard rooms and control rooms
• Eliminate design features that provide access to roofs or upper levels
NATURALTERRITORIAL REINFORCEMENT
• Maintained premises and landscaping such that it communicates an alert
and active presence occupying the space
• Motion sensor lights at all entry points into the residence
• Provide trees in residential areas (but take care they don’t allow a means of
access to upper floors of an adjacent building)
Intrusion detection and electronic surveillance
CPTED methods cannot guarantee security and this is where we need the help
of technology
• Alarm systems and sensors
• Video surveillance
• Mechanical and Electronic access control systems
• Identification systems and access policies
ALARM SYSTEMS AND SENSORS
• Alarm systems can be installed to alert
security personnel when unauthorized
access is attempted
• Alarm systems work in tandem with
physical barriers, mechanical systems,
and security guards, serving to trigger a
response when these other forms of
security have been breached
• They consist of sensors including
motion sensors, contact sensors, and
glass break detectors
VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
• Surveillance cameras can be a
deterrent when placed in highly
visible locations, and are also
useful for incident verification and
historical analysis
• A human must be monitoring the
situation in real time in order to
respond in a timely manner
CCTVTYPES
• Dome CCTV Camera
• Bullet CCTV Camera
• C-Mount CCTV Camera
• Day/Night CCTV Camera
• Infrared/NightVision CCTV Camera
• Network/IP CCTV Camera
• Wireless CCTV Camera
• High-Definition HD CCTV Camera
CCTVs USED IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS
• Bullet CCTV Camera
• Day/Night CCTV Camera
• Wireless CCTV Camera
• Network/IP CCTV Camera
VIDEO ANALYTICS
• Although the term closed-
circuit television (CCTV) is
common, it is quickly
becoming outdated
• Video content analysis is the
capability of automatically
analysing video to detect and
determine temporal and
spatial events
MECHANICAL ACCESS CONTROL
• Mechanical access control systems include turnstiles, gates, doors, and
locks
• If the usage is high, Keys quickly become unmanageable, often forcing the
adoption of electronic access control
SECURITY PERSONNEL
• However advanced the technologies are, the security guard cannot be done
away with. There always needs to be a guard in a guard post for the people
to feel safe
• All of the technological systems that are employed to enhance physical
security are useless without a security force that is trained in their use and
maintenance, and which knows how to properly respond to breaches in
security
SECURITY PERSONNEL
• Security personnel perform many
functions: as patrols and at
checkpoints, to administer electronic
access control, to respond to alarms,
and to monitor and analyse video
• Though using a guard dog seems an
old way, it is proven to be an excellent
deterrence factor for potential
offenders
SECURITY LIGHTING
• Intruders are less likely to enter well-
lit areas for fear of being seen
• When lighting the grounds of a
facility, widely distributed low-
intensity lighting is generally
superior to small patches of high-
intensity lighting, because the latter
can have a tendency to create blind
spots for security personnel and
CCTV cameras
EMERGENCY LIGHTING
• An emergency light is a battery-backed lighting device that switches on
automatically when a building experiences a power outage
• They are connected to the main supply where they are charged and kick into
action when needed. They usually work up to 90 minutes
EXIT LIGHTS
• An exit sign is a device in a public facility denoting the location of the closest
emergency exit in case of fire or other emergency
• Most relevant codes (fire, building, health, or safety) require exit signs to be
permanently lit
CAR PARKING LIGHTING
Things to consider when planning lighting for parking areas
• The appropriate lighting level
DIMMING AND CONTROL
• The use of LED light sources and intelligent lighting controls (from PIR to
video detection systems) can be used to trigger lighting level changes, when
combined with a Smart City System
• This will provide all-important energy savings and also ensures that the
scheme is not over-lit. Helping to avoid potentially obtrusive light during
hours of darkness
COLOUR OF LIGHT
• Make sure pedestrians can see and be seen
• The light source with neutral white light of 4000K or warmer being
preferred
GLARE
• Keep column numbers to a minimum. Bracket arms and luminaires with
zero degree inclinations and choose light sources with minimal upward light
• The use of fewer columns, but higher mounting heights, may help minimise
clutter and maintenance points

Security measures

  • 2. SECURITY & BUILDING SECURITY • Security is freedom from, or resilience against, potential harm (or other unwanted coercive change) from external forces • Home security is both the security hardware in place on a property as well as personal security practices.
  • 3. WHY DO WE NEED SECURITY • With the increase in Urbanization, the influx of people into cities increased drastically and since these people are from diverse backgrounds, we see social disorganization in society • It provides both motive and opportunity for various crimes like burglary, assault and battery, murder, arson, vandalism etc.,
  • 4. WHY DO WE NEED SECURITY • The FBI reported that in the USA, 1.7 million homes were burglarized in 2014. • The same report shows that an estimated loss of $3.9 billion was suffered by the victims in the same year. • Overall, when the average value was applied to the estimated number of burglaries, the average dollar loss per burglary offense was $2,251
  • 5. HOME SECURITY Home security mainly involves 3 things • Security systems (doors, lockers, lighting, fences etc.,) • Alarm systems (motion sensors, heat sensors, smoke detectors etc.,) • Personal security measures (ensuring fenestrations are closed, alarm systems are active etc.,)
  • 6. PHYSICAL SECURITY Physical security systems for homes are generally intended to: • Deter potential intruders (e.g. warning signs and perimeter markings) • Detect intrusions and monitor/record intruders (e.g. intruder alarms and CCTV systems); and • Trigger appropriate incident responses (e.g. by security guards and police)
  • 7. PHYSICAL SECURITY • Physical barriers such as fences, walls, and vehicle barriers act as the outermost layer of security • Tall fencing, topped with barbed wire, razor wire or metal spikes are often emplaced on the perimeter of a property, generally with some type of signage that warns people not to attempt to enter
  • 8. CPTED • Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a multi- disciplinary approach to deterring criminal behaviour through environmental design • CPTED strategies rely upon the ability to influence offender decisions that precede criminal acts • It has 3 main concepts Prevention is better than cure - Desiderius Erasmus
  • 9. NATURAL SURVEILLANCE The purpose of natural surveillance is to show the potential offenders of the risk of committing a crime. It involves: • Designing streets to increase pedestrian and bicycle traffic • Placing windows overlooking sidewalks and parking lots • Utilizing curved streets with multiple view points to multiple houses' entrances
  • 10. NATURAL SURVEILLANCE • Not using shrubbery taller than 1 M – an aesthetically appealing way to provide security • Create landscape designs that provide surveillance, especially in proximity to designated points of entry and opportunistic points of entry
  • 11. NATURAL ACCESS CONTROL • Use a single, clearly identifiable, point of entry • Use structures to divert people to reception areas • Restrict entries to sensitive areas like guard rooms and control rooms • Eliminate design features that provide access to roofs or upper levels
  • 12. NATURALTERRITORIAL REINFORCEMENT • Maintained premises and landscaping such that it communicates an alert and active presence occupying the space • Motion sensor lights at all entry points into the residence • Provide trees in residential areas (but take care they don’t allow a means of access to upper floors of an adjacent building)
  • 13. Intrusion detection and electronic surveillance CPTED methods cannot guarantee security and this is where we need the help of technology • Alarm systems and sensors • Video surveillance • Mechanical and Electronic access control systems • Identification systems and access policies
  • 14. ALARM SYSTEMS AND SENSORS • Alarm systems can be installed to alert security personnel when unauthorized access is attempted • Alarm systems work in tandem with physical barriers, mechanical systems, and security guards, serving to trigger a response when these other forms of security have been breached • They consist of sensors including motion sensors, contact sensors, and glass break detectors
  • 15. VIDEO SURVEILLANCE • Surveillance cameras can be a deterrent when placed in highly visible locations, and are also useful for incident verification and historical analysis • A human must be monitoring the situation in real time in order to respond in a timely manner
  • 16. CCTVTYPES • Dome CCTV Camera • Bullet CCTV Camera • C-Mount CCTV Camera • Day/Night CCTV Camera • Infrared/NightVision CCTV Camera • Network/IP CCTV Camera • Wireless CCTV Camera • High-Definition HD CCTV Camera
  • 17. CCTVs USED IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS • Bullet CCTV Camera • Day/Night CCTV Camera • Wireless CCTV Camera • Network/IP CCTV Camera
  • 18. VIDEO ANALYTICS • Although the term closed- circuit television (CCTV) is common, it is quickly becoming outdated • Video content analysis is the capability of automatically analysing video to detect and determine temporal and spatial events
  • 19. MECHANICAL ACCESS CONTROL • Mechanical access control systems include turnstiles, gates, doors, and locks • If the usage is high, Keys quickly become unmanageable, often forcing the adoption of electronic access control
  • 20. SECURITY PERSONNEL • However advanced the technologies are, the security guard cannot be done away with. There always needs to be a guard in a guard post for the people to feel safe • All of the technological systems that are employed to enhance physical security are useless without a security force that is trained in their use and maintenance, and which knows how to properly respond to breaches in security
  • 21. SECURITY PERSONNEL • Security personnel perform many functions: as patrols and at checkpoints, to administer electronic access control, to respond to alarms, and to monitor and analyse video • Though using a guard dog seems an old way, it is proven to be an excellent deterrence factor for potential offenders
  • 22. SECURITY LIGHTING • Intruders are less likely to enter well- lit areas for fear of being seen • When lighting the grounds of a facility, widely distributed low- intensity lighting is generally superior to small patches of high- intensity lighting, because the latter can have a tendency to create blind spots for security personnel and CCTV cameras
  • 23. EMERGENCY LIGHTING • An emergency light is a battery-backed lighting device that switches on automatically when a building experiences a power outage • They are connected to the main supply where they are charged and kick into action when needed. They usually work up to 90 minutes
  • 24. EXIT LIGHTS • An exit sign is a device in a public facility denoting the location of the closest emergency exit in case of fire or other emergency • Most relevant codes (fire, building, health, or safety) require exit signs to be permanently lit
  • 25. CAR PARKING LIGHTING Things to consider when planning lighting for parking areas • The appropriate lighting level
  • 26. DIMMING AND CONTROL • The use of LED light sources and intelligent lighting controls (from PIR to video detection systems) can be used to trigger lighting level changes, when combined with a Smart City System • This will provide all-important energy savings and also ensures that the scheme is not over-lit. Helping to avoid potentially obtrusive light during hours of darkness
  • 27. COLOUR OF LIGHT • Make sure pedestrians can see and be seen • The light source with neutral white light of 4000K or warmer being preferred
  • 28. GLARE • Keep column numbers to a minimum. Bracket arms and luminaires with zero degree inclinations and choose light sources with minimal upward light • The use of fewer columns, but higher mounting heights, may help minimise clutter and maintenance points
