The PIMS Multi-Speciality Hospital, designed by Gautam Shah and constructed by Larsen and Toubro, spans 56 acres in Jalandhar, Punjab, and includes a medical college, hospital, and various support facilities. The hospital features well-planned circulation, separate emergency access, ample parking for 460 cars, and an advanced air conditioning and plumbing system to meet modern healthcare standards.  In part one the labour and delivery with the gynecology department .
 The extreme right consist of the nursery and the aseptic gynecology

 The support facilities and the nurse station are strategically placed in

● Out of which the 2 OT’s are for future use.
● The whole complex is divided into three parts according to
the corridors :
1)the clean corridor;
2)the sterile corridor;
3)the dirty corridor.
● The visitors are not allowed to go beyond the sterile corridor.
● The clean corridor consist of patient holding where the
patient’s bed is prepared for the operation and then
taken to OT.
● It consists of anesthesia office and work room.
● The sterile corridor consists of OT’s.
● 2 OT’s shares the common scrub, trolley prep. And the soil.
● The dirty corridor is to take the soil from the OT to the
basement for the disposal.

38.  ENTRANCES:
PIMS has three entrances:
1)To emergency and hospital
2)To OPD
3)To institution, housing and hostels
A separate pedestrian entrance is provided to access and has no link to
the internal roads of the hospital complex.
 ROADS
The main approach roads are 12m wide, and some internal roads are
7.5m wide , with the service roads also of 12m wide, the roads accesses
the whole site all around.
 ROADS SECTION
The road side have lamps and good lighting in the parking area.
The trees are along the road sides and proper drains along the road for the
rain water disposal .
 Pedestrians
● Footpaths are made for the pedestrians of 2.5m and 3m wide along the
approach roads.
 Service related to site
Service roads and ramps are strategically placed which do not hinders
the main roads. Service ramps are made to approach the basement to
service yard for the trucks to work properly in the space ,keeping in mind
the turning radius and clear height .

39.  PARKING:
The parking is the main problem which is generally faced by the user of the building but
the parking space for 450 cars for the visitors are provided in the site. Different parking
space for the emergency and the staff are also provided.
The parking and entrance porches are very strategically placed and there is proper flow
of the traffic. This makes the space user friendly and resulted in the worked out and
efficient design.
Separate parking for the ambulance is provide for the provided , and is placed around
the entrance porch.

40. ● Separate roads have been provided for OPD and
emergency, which provides the complete segregation of
traffic.
● Total parking space for 450 cars of visitors have been
provided
● Parking of service yard has been strategically placed
such that it has direct access through service lane.
● There are total 9 stairs leading to different parts of the
building.
● CSSD does not has DIRTY DUMB WAITER, all the dirty
goods are carried manually.
● Wires have been laid on stainless steel trays.
● No refuse Shute has been provided in the hospital.
● Fire doors are lead coated to to make them fire-resistant.
● Water sprinklers and smoke detectors have been
provided after every 3m distance(approx.)
● CSSD has been provided near to emergency.
● Open able glass windows have been provided for
adequate ventilation.
INTERNAL

41.  Architectural form directly follows the functional
aspect in the straight line building façade.
 Façade comes out acc. To planning of spaces and
no special efforts have been made to design the
form of the building
 Entrance lobby of the OPD has quarter cylindrical
form, which is fully glazed, and breaks the
monotony of the whole structure. But this also
causes sharp western glare in the evening
 Overall building has been finished in stucco finish
 Glazing is done in bronze-grey aluminum frame,
with use of green tinted glass
 False-ceiling of metal sheets has been done.
 Marble has been used for flooring.
ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTER

42.  AIR CONDITIONING:
 A chill water system for the air conditioning is installed.
 4 no’s water cooled centrifugal chiller of 450 TR capacity each to
 provide chilled water supply to AHU. 3no’s hot water generator of 400 kw capacity
 each to supply the hot water for winter space heating . The plant room is
 located in the basement.
 Chiller (condenser) rejects heat to condenser water turn are cooled in 3 no’s cooling tower of 520 TR
capacity each located on the terrace.
 There are 4 (1 stand by ) no’s constant speed chilled water pumps for circulating chilled water to different
AHU’s.
 There are 4 no’s condenser water pumps and 3 no. shot water pumps located in the plant room.
 OPERATION THEATRES:
● Following low side system is used for the OT’s:
● All OT supply 100% outside conditioned air . There is one AHU supplying air to two OT’s however 2 no’s
OT’s have individual AHU. 2 NO’s OT’s on first floor and 2 no. OT on second floor are served by HRW
inbuilt TFA units.
● Aluminum ducts are used for supplying conditioned air and exhausting used from OT’s.
● Closed cell nitrite are used as insulating material on all supply air ducts for OT’s and exhaust air ducts
outside OT’s ; however up to heat recovery wheel s are isolated with glass wool as an insulating
material.
● High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are installed before supply air terminates in OT.
● Electric reheaters are provided in supply air after cooling coil for humidity control during high humidity
condition.
● Electric pan type of humidifier are used for humidification during counter space heating

43. Difference in the AC ducts used in
ICU’s and in the normal areas
● ICU AHU are provided with electric pan type of humidifier for humidification during winters space
heating. This area as in OT are also maintained at +ve pressure with respect to surrounding area.
● Conditioned area other than OT are taken from AHU through GI ducting.
● All AHU are double skinned type and provided with 2 way modulating control valve at the cooling
/heating coils with compatible thermostat.
 BASEMENT VENTILATION:
● The air exhausted out using ceiling mounted grills , GI ducting and centrifugal fans.
● The basement is ventilated @ 10-15 air change / hr . Fans are used for forced exhaust and
● forced fresh air supply.
● A/C plant room , laundry , boiler room and autopsy morgue are served through air washer.
 NOISE CRITERION:
● All air conditioning equipments and materials are selected , designed and installed in such a
manner that the system is free from vibration and disturbing sound.
● The noise level in conditioned space due to all air conditioning equipments will not exceed 50 db
at 125 Hz when measured at ant point in the occupied space less than 1.5 m above the ground
level and not closer than 1.5 m from any supply air register or 60 cm from any return air grill.

44. ● A TOTAL NUMBER OF 16 STAIRCASES AND 16 LIFTS HAVE BEEN
PROVIDED THROUGHOUT THE HOSPITAL AT EASILY ACCESSIBLE
DISTANCE.
● ALL FLOORS ARE CONNECTED VERTICALLY THROUGH CENTRALLY
LOCATED RAMP.

45. ● Leak proof plumbing system to match the high quality standard of the hospital
building.
● Piping systems are planned to prevent contamination hazards and are located in a
accessible pipe ducts to ensure easy access for repair and maintenance.
● Assured 24 hrs safe water is stored for uninterrupted water supply.
● SANITARY FIXTURE:
● Plumbing fixture are of the highest quality , indigenous make appropriate to the high
standards required in the hospital.
● Fixture and showers for the patient are specially designed hospital fixture are infrared
operated taps and flushing system for no touch operation and water saving.
● Conventional sanitary fixture are used for all public and staff
● toilet. Fixture have good water pressure for optimal functioning.
● DRAINAGE SYSTEM:
● Sanitary drainage system are of cast iron pipes .
● The entire system is provided with traps and fully ventilated.
● Drain lines from the kitchen , laundry , laboratory and special areas using
● radioactive wastes have separate stream for pre treatment / neutralization before
disposal in city sewage system.
● Separate rain water disposal system based on the local rainfall data is also provided.

46. ● Water supply to the hospital complex is safe and meets international standards for drinking water.
● The water is filtered and softened for general supply polishing softer (hardness commercial zero) is
done for water supply to sterilizer, autoclaves, boiler, and laundry and HVAC water.
● Supply to special equipments , labs, and other areas are deminerlised water or treated in the RO
plant.
● Estimated water requirement for 450 bedded + 1250 TR A.C plant
● Storage capacity for at least 24 hrs. Requirement and static fire storage.
 STEAM BOILERS:
● Steam boilers are provided to meet requirement of steam for sterilization , laundry, kitchen, winter
heating and hot water generation
● Boilers are oil filled and fully automatic.
● SCRUBBER:
● A wet scrubber is provided for reducing stack emission as per pollution control

WATER SUPPLY AND TREATMENT

47.  INCINERATOR/COMPACTOR:
● Specially designed oil fired incinerator to dispose off hospital waste are provided.
● Waster compactor units to crush waste for compaction and disposal in approved manner.
 CENTRALISED MEDICAL GASES SUPPLY SYSTEM:
● The hospital is provided with the centralized medical gases supply system with supply of oxygen ,
nitrous oxide ,
● vacuum and compound air.
● Oxygen and nitrous oxide supplied from gas banks.
● Vacuum and compound air is supplied from the vacuum pump and air compressor to meet the
hospital standards.

48. ● For electrical services architecturally electrical rooms and
electrical panels are provided in the whole building.
● P.V.C. conduit pipes were laid by chiseling of walls and after lying
of conduits, the walls are plastered flushed to wall surface.
● Ceiling fans and concealed light boxes at the time of roof slab
casting.
● Special boxes are also laid in the floors of labs in order to provide
electrical and networking conduits.
● For data and networking CAT 5 cable is laid in separate conduits
which is connected to the main server room.
● Lightning conductor is also mounted on the top of Academic
Block

49.  FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM:
● The fire suppression system will comprise of:
● Underground static water tank.
● Overhead secondary reservoir for sprinkler system (on building terrace).
● Electric fire , sprinklers , jockey pump and diesel engine pump.
 SYSTEMS WET RISER HYDRANT
● Fire main permanently charged with water under pressure to the fire pumps ,
external ring main with stand post hydrants and hydrant station with valve ,hose
reels and accessories.
 SPRINKLER STSTEM:
● Sprinkler system is provided in the entire hospital complex including basement
and all other areas except the electrical LT room etc.
● The system use quick response sprinkler in all patient areas , pendant/upright
sprinklers in exposed location basement ceiling and in void above false ceiling
and semi recessed type sprinklers under false ceiling.
 SPECIAL PROTECTION:
● Oil filled power transformer installed in basement requires
● high voltage deluge system. Graphite dry type transformer
● does not require the protection. Carbon dioxide flooding system
● for main power LT and HT panels.
 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS:
● Fire extinguishers for different classes for specific usage to be
● installed throughout the building.

50.  Emphasis has been laid on the mix use
of hard and soft areas for Landscaping.
 Soft areas are in the form of small
square boxes which has been formed in
between hard areas having provision of
a tree in the center along with up
lighting. On one side of this box sitting
is also provided which allow people to
sit in open with a tree shading above
them.
 Floor has been given a material
difference
 ( washed concrete finish and stone )
which sets the movement pattern of the
