CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM
CLASS V
• Circulatory system is
made up of the heart,
blood vessels and
blood.
• It carries oxygen and
nutrients to the cell and
removes waste products
like carbon dioxide.
Heart is located in the middle of the chest cavity and protected
by rib cage. In humans, it is about the size of a clenched fist.
HEART
• The Heart is one of the most
important organs in the human
body. It is made up of special
muscles called cardiac muscles.
• The right side of the heart
receives the blood from the
body and pumps it to the lungs.
• The left side of the heart
receives blood from the lungs
and pumps it all the parts of the
body
The heart and the circulatory system together are known as the
cardiovascular system.

Pulse Rate or Heart Rate
• The number of times the heart
beats in a minute is called Pulse rate
or Heart rate.
• Unit to measure heart rate is beats
per minute (BPM)
• Doctors use stethoscope to listen to
the heart beat.
• A normal resting heart rate for
adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats
per minute (for children: 70-100
beats per minute).
There are three major types of
blood vessels:
✘ Arteries
✘ Veins
✘ Capillaries
BLOOD VESSELS
Blood vessels are a network
of hollow tubes that
transport blood all over our
body.
ARTERIES
• Arteries carry oxygenated blood from
the heart to the various parts of the
body.
• Arteries carry oxygenated blood
away from heart.
• They have thick elastic wall.
• Pulmonary artery is the only artery
which carry deoxygenated blood.
• Valves are not present
VEINS
• Veins bring deoxygenated blood
from the various parts of the
body to the heart.
• Veins carry deoxygenated blood
towards heart.
• They have thin walls
• Pulmonary vein is the only vein
that carry oxygenated blood.
• Valves are present.
Capillaries
• Capillaries are the smallest blood
vessel.
• They connect veins to arteries.
• They have walls thinner than veins.
• They allow nutrients from digested
food, oxygen and water to pass easily
into the cells.
• Carbon dioxide and other waste
materials are also exchanged
through the thin walls of the
capillaries.
• Blood makes up about 8% of
our weight. It performs many
functions of our body.
• One of the main functions is to
supply oxygen and nutrients to
the cells in our body.
• It also removes waste such as
carbon dioxide from them.
• Blood lacking in oxygen is dark
red in colour.

Functions of blood

2. Removal of wastes

3. Carries oxygen

4. Regulation of body temperature
ARTERIOSCLEROSIS
• Arteriosclerosis occurs when fat,
cholesterol and other substances build up
in the walls of the arteries and form hard
structures called plaque.
• Over time, plaque build-up narrows the
arteries and makes them stiff. This makes
it harder for blood to flow through them.
• This blockage prevents tissue from
receiving blood and oxygen.
• This can cause a person to suffer from
chest pain, breathlessness or more
seriously, heart attacks and strokes.
Treatment of ARTERIOSCLEROSIS
• Follow a healthy life
style by eating a well-
balanced meal with
many servings of
fruits and vegetables.
• Exercising at least 30
minutes a day help
reduce the risk of
heart diseases.

To control the blood flow around the body
To supply blood to the body
To help us to breathe
We should take care of our heart by eating right
food and doing regular exercise.

SCIENCE - CIRCULATORY SYSTEM (CLASS V - IGCSE)

  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 3.
  • 5. • Circulatory system is made up of the heart, blood vessels and blood. • It carries oxygen and nutrients to the cell and removes waste products like carbon dioxide.
  • 6. Heart is located in the middle of the chest cavity and protected by rib cage. In humans, it is about the size of a clenched fist. HEART
  • 7. • The Heart is one of the most important organs in the human body. It is made up of special muscles called cardiac muscles. • The right side of the heart receives the blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. • The left side of the heart receives blood from the lungs and pumps it all the parts of the body
  • 8.
  • 9.
  • 10.
  • 11.
  • 12.
  • 13. The heart and the circulatory system together are known as the cardiovascular system.
  • 14. superior vena cava right atrium Inferior vena cava right ventricle Cardiac muscle left ventricle left atrium aorta Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein
  • 15. Pulse Rate or Heart Rate • The number of times the heart beats in a minute is called Pulse rate or Heart rate. • Unit to measure heart rate is beats per minute (BPM) • Doctors use stethoscope to listen to the heart beat. • A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute (for children: 70-100 beats per minute).
  • 16. There are three major types of blood vessels: ✘ Arteries ✘ Veins ✘ Capillaries BLOOD VESSELS Blood vessels are a network of hollow tubes that transport blood all over our body.
  • 17. ARTERIES • Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the various parts of the body. • Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from heart. • They have thick elastic wall. • Pulmonary artery is the only artery which carry deoxygenated blood. • Valves are not present
  • 18. VEINS • Veins bring deoxygenated blood from the various parts of the body to the heart. • Veins carry deoxygenated blood towards heart. • They have thin walls • Pulmonary vein is the only vein that carry oxygenated blood. • Valves are present.
  • 19. Capillaries • Capillaries are the smallest blood vessel. • They connect veins to arteries. • They have walls thinner than veins. • They allow nutrients from digested food, oxygen and water to pass easily into the cells. • Carbon dioxide and other waste materials are also exchanged through the thin walls of the capillaries.
  • 20.
  • 21.
  • 22.
  • 23. • Blood makes up about 8% of our weight. It performs many functions of our body. • One of the main functions is to supply oxygen and nutrients to the cells in our body. • It also removes waste such as carbon dioxide from them. • Blood lacking in oxygen is dark red in colour. BLOOD
  • 24. Functions of blood 1. Transportation of digested part
  • 25. Functions of blood 2. Removal of wastes
  • 26. Functions of blood 3. Carries oxygen to the other parts
  • 27. Functions of blood 4. Regulation of body temperature
  • 28. ARTERIOSCLEROSIS • Arteriosclerosis occurs when fat, cholesterol and other substances build up in the walls of the arteries and form hard structures called plaque. • Over time, plaque build-up narrows the arteries and makes them stiff. This makes it harder for blood to flow through them. • This blockage prevents tissue from receiving blood and oxygen. • This can cause a person to suffer from chest pain, breathlessness or more seriously, heart attacks and strokes.
  • 29. Treatment of ARTERIOSCLEROSIS • Follow a healthy life style by eating a well- balanced meal with many servings of fruits and vegetables. • Exercising at least 30 minutes a day help reduce the risk of heart diseases.
  • 30. the body’s breathing system the body’s food-processing system the body’s blood-transporting system
  • 31. To control the blood flow around the body To supply blood to the body To help us to breathe
  • 32. We should take care of our heart by eating right food and doing regular exercise.
  • 33. • Heart is the muscular organ that pumps blood to the various parts of the body. • The heart and the circulatory system together are known as the cardiovascular system. • Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the various parts of the body.

  • 35. MEMORY MAP The circulatory system is made up of Heart and blood vessels The heart keeps pumping the blood Blood vessels carry oxygen, nutrients and When we run or play pump blood throughout the body carbon dioxide the heart beat increases even when we are sleeping the heart and blood vessels
