Heritage Differences In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
Heritage Differences
In the short story Everyday Use , by Alice Walker she represents the conflicts and struggles of the
African American culture in rural Georgia around the early 1970 s. Alice Walker introduced 4
main characters; Mama and her two daughters, Maggie and Dee as well as Dee s boyfriend
Hakim a barber. Mama is the narrator of the story, she is both a mother and father to her
daughters as she is uneducated but worked years of physical labor and lives in poverty. Maggie
is the youngest daughter who s shy and lives with Mama, she lacks confidence and is unable to be
open nor make eye contact with the people talking to her. Mama s older daughter, Dee who
renamed herself as Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo is educated, determined, and confident. She
declares that she is the one who is looking at the important aspects of her family history and Mama
and Maggie aren t aware of it. Everyday Use carries many different meanings that highlight the
issue of how things are used on an everyday basis. Understanding their family African heritage
was a big concept for Dee. As Mama and Dee had two different opinions about heritage which
caused conflict about whom should keep the quilts from Maggie and Dee. Everyday Use is a
focus on the bonds women have between different generations and legacies for example, the Quilts.
Mama and Maggie see a different usefulness to the quilts compared to Dee, the quits represent
matters such as reading, race and class, among others.
Quilting in Everyday Use symbolizes family heritage. They are a history of papers in fabric that
vary over generations. They symbolize the family s history of pride, poverty and struggle. Mama
and Dee have different perspectives on what the quilts mean to the family heritage. As to Mama,
the quilts have a special significance; when she goes to touch them, she is feeling the people who
represented them, the ones who worked on them in her family. It represents the bond between
women of different generations in their family. The quilts to Mama don t only represent her
understanding of heritage but also shows how she s connected to them with her family. I took it
for a moment in my hands. You didn t even have to look close to see where hands

The Importance Of Conflict Resolution
The term conflict resolution implies that the purpose of interventions is to resolve the conflict
(Barsky, 2017, p. 4). Conflict resolution was significant in my childhood, upbringing, and origin.
Conflicts were resolved through varied approaches including prayers, counselling, and
confrontations. Currently, these practices have influenced the way I handled conflictboth at a
professional and a personal level.
Resolving Conflicts Through Prayer
Last school year, one of my students, continued to be disruptive in one of the core classes. Many
forms of interventions were employed including meeting the counselor, allowing time for de
escalation, and meeting with the social worker twice per week. None of these interventions seemed
to be effective. I realized that the student needed divine intervention. One of my colleagues and
myself, decided to pray consistently for improvement in the student s behavior. Through prayer, we
identified that the student s poor social skills were because of low self esteem. With praise and
affirmation, the student s negative behaviors soon diminished and the student started to exhibit
appropriate mannerisms. Thus, prayer changes things; my parents benefited from this practice and I
am still a beneficiary of divine intervention for conflict resolution.
Resolving Conflicts Through Counseling Resolving conflicts through counseling was also
prevalent in my upbringing. Counseling involved a mediator of a reputable character. Barsky

In 2007, the ministry of Women and Child development released a study report on on child abuse.
The report discusses incidence of child abuse nationwide. It is estimated that 150 million girls
and 73 million boys under 18 have been subjected to forced sexual intercourse or other forms of
sexual violence .[4] In 2013, India s Hell Holes: Child Sexual Assault in Juvenile Justice Homes,
the Asian Centre for Human Rights said that sexual offences against children in India have reached
epidemic proportion. [5] The report stated that more than 48,000 child rape cases were recorded
from 2001 to 2011 and that India saw an increase of 336% of child rape cases from 2001 (2,113
cases) to 2011 (7,112 cases).[6]

My Indian Culture
I am an Indian who was born and raised in America. This means that I have been affected by both
American and Indian cultures. One of the biggest lesson imparted on me from Indian culture
was about language. In Indian culture, a person shows respect to everyone. We call adults not
related to us uncle and auntie as a sign of respect towards our elders. We even call kids older
than us Chetan and Chachi in the part of India that my family comes from since they are
technically our elders as well. Since the use of expletives would be considered disrespectful, it was
forbidden in my family. In fact, when I was a kid, the word stupid was considered taboo. To the
young me, saying stupid would be the same as saying f***. I remember one time when I was really
young, I was really mad. It was so insignificant that I don t even remember what I got so angry
over. So I said the word stupid while my dad. It was one of the less wise decisions I made my life.
Something you should know about my dad is that he very strict and takes showing respect to
everyone very seriously. So when I said stupid , he got really mad. He punished me by taking away
my privileges like watching TV which was already limited because my dad believed that I
should only be studying on school days. I was so sad when he limited my privileges that I even
cried. From then on, I learned to control my language for fear of losing those privileges. Even if
those privileges were pretty trivial, back then, those were

The first legal consideration in this case is related to corporate liability. The hospital itself is
negligent under this doctrine. Corporate negligence is the failure to provide the equipment,
facilities, and staff to carry out the duties of the corporation in accordance with the established
standard of conduct (Showalter, 2007). Corporate negligence is evident in this case in regard to the
failure to ensure that sufficient healthcare personnel were available to provide the established
standard of care to the patients in the facility. Moreover, the personnel that were required to remain

shortage.
Identify and explain three ethical considerations. Leaders in healthcare organizations are often
faced with a variety of ethical issues. Ethical considerations will be discussed from a leadership
perspective. The ethical considerations related to this case are the responsibility to patients,
responsibility to employees, and responsibility to the organization. Responsibilities to patients
includes providing quality care that meets established standards, ensuring there are mechanisms in
place to monitor and evaluate the performance of healthcare personnel, hiring and retaining
competent professional staff that meet licensing and accreditation standards, and consistently
reviewing, researching, and implementing evidence based practices. This case fails to demonstrate
ethical conduct in terms of responsibilities to patients specifically in regard to staffing, which, in
turn affects quality of care. Responsibilities to employees include providing an adequate and safe
work environment, ensuring that employees are equipped with equipment, facilities, and sufficient
staff to perform their duties within the established standards of care, promoting the appropriate use
of employee s knowledge and skills, and providing a mechanism for employees to voice ethical
concerns. This case fails to meet this ethical standard as evidenced by not providing sufficient

Humanism the Gateway to Individualism
The greatest and most influential intellectual movement of Renaissance Italy was humanism. The
humanists believed that the Greek and Latin classics contained all the lessons one needed to lead
a moral and effective life and were the best models for a person to live by. They developed a new
kind of classical scholarship, with which they corrected and tried to understand the works of the
Greeks and Romans, which was important to them. Both the republic elites of Florenceand Venice,
and the ruling families of Milan, Ferrara, and Urbino hired humanists to teach their children
classical morality and to write elegant, classical letters, histories, and propaganda. The quest for
education of this society allowed the concept of individuality to... Show more content on

Francesco Petrarch, the great Renaissance humanist, noted other humanists, and innumerable
others like them, signifying the popularity classical literature had in the then recent past. Pico della
Mirandola, a Florentine writer, stated in his On the Dignity of Man, that there are no limits placed
on what man can accomplish. His rationalization was that man was not subject to the fate of God or
predestination, rather that he controls his own destiny, and that his accomplishments were limitless
within the range of achievements available to man. Leonardo da Vinci may have been known at his
time as a great painter, but he may also have been one of the greatest mathematicians of that era.
Renaissance artists, such as Michelangelo and Raphael, writers and philosophers such as Petrarch
and Machiavelli, the great composers like Mozart and Bach, athletes who revived ancient Roman
athletics such as discus and javelin competitions, and even the Popes, who, unfortunately, were
sometimes no more than successful businessmen before fulfilling their holy duties, were, in all
groups, somewhat of a peasant heritage. Never before had society s greatest thinkers come from
the peasant class. Humanism spreads the idea of society away from rigid systems of classes built
on economic wealth, but rather opportunities were open for the people of lower classes. This was

Brainology By Carol Dweck

dweck s article brainology speaks about christopher situation and aspects regarding his fixed and
growth mindset. By providing example from the text and carol dweck s article, this essay will
further support his growth or fixed mindset, and thoroughly analyze the article itself. One of the
most basic beliefs we carry about ourselves, Dweck found in her research, has to do with how we
view and inhabit what we consider to be our personality. A fixed mindset is that we assumes that
our intelligence, character, and creativity are static traits givens which we can t change in any
way, and success is the allegation of that inborn intelligence, an estimate of how those givens
measure up against an equally fixed standard; aiming for prosperity and dodging failure becomes a
way of claiming the sense of being smart or skilled. A growth mindset, on the other hand, emphasis
on challenge and sees failure as evidence of unintelligence but as a positive bounce... Show more

David Guetta Meaning
Titanium , by David Guetta, is a song that describes a super woman that can withstand any abuse
given to her. David Guetta is able to enhance the lyrics of this song by including several loud
breaks within this song. During these breaks, Ratliff describes how the loud bass drum beats away
all the white noise. I found it interesting how uncomfortable the white noise sounded, and I think
the song would sound terrible if this loud bass drum was taken out. Additionally, I think that if the
bass drum was taken out, the song would not contain such a double meaning. The white noise
seems to represent all the abuse put onto this woman, and the bass drum seems to be her fighting it
off. If she were truly bullet proof, she would not need to fight this... Show more content on

These preexisting sounds make this song sound alien to the music from today; as a result, the
music ends up reminding the listener of similar music from the 1960s. For instance, the drum beat
throughout the song Be My Baby hits only on the fourth beat which is primarily heard in Latin
music. This gives the beat more pull whenever the snare beat finally comes around, as opposed to
the snare being hit on the second and fourth beat. Furthermore, the castanets played throughout this
song sound very Latin. In our age of electronic music, we typically use other electronic sounds in
the background take the place of castanets. On the other hand, the background vocals sung in Be
My Baby sound like the 1960s. For example, the background singers continue to sing parts of the
chorus throughout the song a lot louder than most of the music heard today. As a result, music from
the 1960s seems to always contain a clear message that is hammered in by the repetitive backup
vocalists and the highly anticipated snare drum. This music fits within a time period, since music
continues to adapt and change to meet the tastes of its listeners. For this reason, this music sounds
alien, since our generation is very different from people in the

The Importance Of Objectivity In Art
As Gombrich describes, objectivity is the ability to represent something exactly as it is seen in
nature without any influence. According to Gombrich, the objectivity of the representation in a
work of art does not define how correct or real the art is. On the contrary, realism is defined by the
information conveyed from the art. If the information is correct, the work is realistic. Gombrich
believes this because there are multiple limits to representing objectively. One of the most
prominent limits is style because as much as any artist would like to recreate nature objectively,
style overrules. Every artist has a unique temperament which is represented in their work, making it
a limit to representing an objectobjectively. Furthermore, the style itself is a limit to objectivity
as well. Style includes but is not limited to the method of recreation or technique. The choice of
technique restricts the artist freedom of choice as the artist can only render what his technique is
capable of rendering. Not only is the limit to objectivity seen in the work of art itself, but it is
also present in viewing nature itself with the eyes. The artist will see certain aspects of nature that
others will not see based on his technique. For example, an artist drawing a scene will focus on the
scene in terms of lines. Another limit to objectivity is the preference of an artist. An artist will only
paint what he likes, which is what he can paint.
Answer 2:
I agree with all of Gombrich s

Management Theories In Classroom Management
2.4 Behaviour management theories While classroom management theory is constantly evolving.
There are many types of behaviour management and discipline strategies for the classroom. Some of
the theories are directly applicable and some theories can use with our own personal mix.
Understanding these theories can help educators define their own classroom management methods
and make decisions about how to best approach interactions with students (Hussung, 2016). 2.4.1
The Assertive Discipline Model This theory, proposed by Lee Canter (1976), suggests that students
positive behaviours should be recognized and encouraged. As per his theory, teachers should inform
students about expectations they have as well as rules they have set. Once they inform students,
they will closely monitor who follow these guidelines. According to his theory, teachers should be
entrusted with the right to teach without any intervention, while students should learn without any
interruption (Edu excellence organisation, 2016). Most important thing in this model is teacher
always reinforced positive more than negative. However, if the student violates the rules
persistently, then he or she is punished. This include five steps namely; warning the student, giving
10 minute time out in isolation, giving the student a 15 minute time out in isolation, calling the
student s parents and finally, sending the student to the principal s office. However, this approach is
not practicable for the teenagers. Because

The Big Sleep- the Depiction of Marlowe as a Modern-Day...
The Big Sleep The depiction of Marlowe as a modern day knight
The novel The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler was published in 1939 during the heart of the
Great Depression. The novel is written in a very sinister, dark and kind of a gangster tone and
carries much of the cynicism of 1930s America. The Big Sleep is a story of intrigue, corruption,
delinquency and obliquity with a rather complex plot which can be very confusing. The main
character in the Big Sleep is the private detective Philip Marlow who is very masculine man with
values and a good moral. His strong moral is often evidenced throughout the novel. Marlowe is the
only one in this complex world who cannot be corrupted because the other characters are all
described as sleazy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is another passage where he is looking down at a chess board saying: I looked down at the
chess board. The move with the knight was wrong. I put it back where I have moved it from.
Knights had no meaning in this game (95). It is clear that he depicts himself as the knight and he
is referring to his cold case and the mistakes he has made so far in solving the crime. The sentence
knights had no meaning in this game refers to his chivalrous behavior and that this has not been
helpful so far in solving the crime and that frustrates him. Furthermore, his behavior has no meaning
or value for the other characters that are included in this crime and he is instantly reminded that he
is the only one in this game who is faithful and morally. However, the description of chivalry is not
only portrayed through the imagery in the novel but moreover through the behavior of Philip
Marlowe. For hundreds of years, the knight is one of the most fascinating figures or motives of
the history which has not lost his symbolic brightness and power. If one is looking for a
definition of a knight it always includes certain terms like strong, noble, chivalrous, morally
straight or protector of the weak as well as the existence of a certain code. According to this code it
is the duty of a knight to protect women, children and to have faithfulness. This is exactly the
behavior that Marlowe displays throughout the novel. Within the novel there are several passages

Assesment of Level of English Proficiency
CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Because English is so
widely spoken, it has often been referred to as a world language , the lingua franca of the modern
era, and while it is not an official language in most countries, it is currently the language most often
taught as a foreign language. English is widely spoken in the Philippines. It is used as the business

Also, youth is now affected by this low proficiency. Sadly, some methods scare if not bore
students or fail to spark their enthusiasm that they end up sitting in the classroom simply staring
at teachers who do all the talking. The quality of education according to Dela Rosa (2000) has to
start going up or we can call the whole deal off. Government owes us the services of good
teachers, especially language mentors. The researcher, in her seven years of teaching the English
language , is saddened by the students lack of confidence in communicating in English. Many
students prefer to keep quiet in class for fear that when they speak, they might commit errors in
grammar pronunciation, and that their classmates might laugh at them. This is alarming most
especially when a student is in an Oral Communication class and the whole quarter slips away
without a word from a very shy student. With these, the researcher was motivated to assess the
level of English proficiency of the grade 7 students at Payapa National High School which she
believes would be a great basis on designing an action plan in order to further enhance the English
proficiency among students. Conceptual Framework In an attempt to validate the viewpoint that

information through the news media, which includes print based media such as newspapers,
magazines, books, and audio visual such as films, television, and lastly, Internet. Their main
purpose is to deliver news to the general public. A legitimate news story aims to do all of the
following inform, educate, and entertain its audience. Thus, it should be mainly concerned with
high level of conflict and be relevant to its readers. Only very recently though, the news became

There were a lot of interesting articles on The Huffington Post, under a section named The Death of

called Here s How The Way We Read Newspapers Has Changed , Bad News for Newspapers , and
Twitter Is the 21st Century Newspaper . Based on their titles, it can be assured that technology has
shaped the journalism industry in the 21st Century.
Technology has become a very common device to own and utilize nowadays, whether it is a
public/private computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. It became very affordable and
approachable as well, and has had the most influence on the 21st Century, or better described as
the Digital Age. The use of media technologies has influenced in different fields in life from

It is part of Disney HK s rationale in creating a unique experience of Disney s magic and Chinese
culture to position itself as a premium theme park in Hong Kong and the Asian region, a theme park
that would come to mind for international tourists and to engage potential mainland Chinese visitors

Disney HK has failed to reach its target number of 5.6 million visitors in the first year of
operation, achieving a total of slightly over 5 million visitors well under its expectation. In the
second and third year of operation, the park visitors were recorded at 4.17 and 4.5 million
respectively (Tai and Lau, 2009). This led to a loss in profit incurred by Disney HK over three
years of operation despite its effort on integrating to Chinese culture and attempt to create a high
value and unique customer s experience to the Disney magic. As a result of the loss, Walt Disney
and the creditors of Disney HK had eased the pressure on payments over management fees and
royalties, performance targets on its commercial loan were also removed (HK SAR, 1999). In the
following year, an opportunity presented itself as Walt Disney had cleared its commercial loans,
where Walt Disney was relieved from a major obstacle from realising

Wineburg, Ohio Essay
Wineburg, Ohio
Winesburg, Ohio, also known as the Book of Grotesque is a modern American classic by
Sherwood Anderson. He came to be known as the Father of Realism , as he left his mark on
literature, being the first one to portray authentic moments in American life. He tells the stories of
many faces he saw in his dreams, describing their deeply moving lives filled with secrets. The
twenty one stories in the novel are united through the setting, Winesburg, and the main character,
George Willard. The novel is character driven, and the stories have very weak plots. Winesburg is a
small town, full of lonely characters whom Anderson calls grotesques because of their inability to
express themselves and communicate with others. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A major part of my role is the development and delivery of training materials. This involves a

The Ethics Of The Bhopal Disaster
In the Business Ethics Foundation Terms class (September 2nd 2014), we discussed the ethical
implications of the Bhopal disaster on December 2nd and 3rd, 1983. A plant that belonged to
Union Carbide subsidiary had a chemical explosion, killing 10,000 lives (conservatively) and
affecting the livelihood of local and their descendants. Although many reasons have been offered up
to try to explain this disaster such as the poor establishment of the manufacturing plant, less
stringent labor laws, non exist environment laws, as well as the negligence in educating the public
and medical facilities in Bhopalabout the fatality of the pesticide. It is my opinion that the
government should also have placed strict boundary rules to limit populations moving into the
possible disaster zone. The government of Indias negligence lies in one or both of the following:
not assessing the risk of building a manufacturing plant close to a populated city, ignoring the
assessed risk inherent in the chemicals being manufactured, and jeopardizing the environment and
population of Bhopal. This is not to say that the Union Carbide and its subsidiary were blameless,
however the Government of India s lack of responsibility for its citizens can be proved when they
underrepresented the victims in the UCC s settlement actions in 1989. Due to these reasons, I will
argue in the following paragraphs that the Government of India has more responsibility than Union
Carbide in not only the tragedy but also for

During the Second World War there were atrocities so profound, that current vocabulary was not

The Legacy Of Abraham Cahan
Jews have been lashed out on, time and time again throughout history, but one man who saw this
hatred for Jews first hand and tried turning the tables, was a man by the name of Abraham Cahan.
He is known as being the first prominent writer to emerge from the biggest wave of Jewish
immigration from Russia, but he was much more than just a writer. He was an editor and critic of
several New York newspapers, a sociologists reformer, and a teacher of English to many Jewish
immigrants following in his footsteps. Cahan valued his Jewish religion, but not only that, he
valued language and in particular English and Yiddish which he wrote in. He believed in telling the
story of immigration through fiction which he did in his literature, by taking... Show more content

This is just one battle in a continuous war against maintaining his religion, but he had a
changing world around him tearing him apart from it. In this constant war, he ends up having to
flee Europe in particular Russia, because he gets tangled in a mess involving an assassination
attempt of the Czar. This journey leads him to America, where he is first greeted by the Statue
of Liberty at Ellis Island. When Cahan came to America many things changed for him, he was
forced to leave behind his old life and try his hardest to assimilate himself into American culture.
He left behind many aspects of his culture, but was still able to continue on with many of them.
One piece of his life that was hardest to maintain was his language. Although he held onto
Yiddish, Russian, and Hebrew, he immediately had to learn English which soon became a large
part of his career and what made him so astounding.America is said to be the home of the free, and
this is what so many immigrants desired when coming to America, and Cahan was no exception.
He was a tremendous aid to those immigrants by devoting the first years of his life in America to
teaching English. While doing this, he also lectured and wrote articles on Jewish life in the city for
countless New York magazines. Within these articles he answers many questions on tough
arguments, mostly circled around religion. An example of one

Essay on Alcoholism
Alcoholism Alcohol consumption was initiated on reservations when traders in the nineteenth
century started to offer it to oppressed and depressed Native Americans. Natives represent, in fact,
the ethnic group with the highest degree of alcohol consumption in the United States. Confinement
on reservations after displacement brought for Native Americans identity conflicts and assimilation
problems. This situation promoted the abuse of liquor to mitigate the psychological pain inflicted
by the dispossession of the land and enclosure in a limited and controlled space. Both the
stereotype of the Noble Savageand the drunken Indian are recurrent figures in mainstream literature
of the US.

characteristics as assimilated and alienated Indians: they have lost their Indianess as a result of
their mixed blood inheritance. Abel s alcoholism makes him react violently to tribal ways and,
thus it takes him to prison, charged with murder: For him (Abel) alcohol is no tranquilizer, but a

discovering his legacy and feeling tribal rejection in a pattern started by his mother, a Laguna

The Effects Of Self Deception In Macbeth
Throughout Macbeth, things are never what they appear to be. Macbeth, similar to other works of
Shakespeare, is a story of pain and tragedy. At the start, King Duncan has a brave and loyal Thane
called Macbeth. After three witches prophesize that Macbeth is destined to become king himself,
Macbeth is overwhelmed with ambition and greed. Reinforced by the prophecy and his wife s
encouragement, he takes the throne by murdering King Duncan. Eventually, Macbeths paranoia, and
guilt lead him to conduct multiple murders to maintain his power. His trust in the witches results in
his defeat and overthrow as he is murdered by those he has wronged. In this play Shakespeare uses
language, conflict, and the supernatural to illustrate deception and the effects of self deception.
Shakespeare s use of language in select scenes reveals Lady Macbeth s characters intentions. Lady
Macbeth is devious when it comes to persuading others, like her husband, into believing things that
are not true. This is shown through the lines, Your hand, your tongue. Look like th innocent flower,
/ But be the serpent under t. (I.v. 56 57). This is spoken to Macbeth and shows how she is
manipulating him into something he is not by telling him he must act innocent but be corrupt on
the inside. Lady Macbeth later decides that she can use this manipulation to push her husband s
ambition to be king. Shakespeare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Beliefs And Beliefs Of Different Religions On Death
Nature of Death
With a beginning of life there is an end, but the nature of death and how it is view can affect how
we live. Death is understood to be that one s biological function cease to function and the body
no longer is capable of anything (Pence, 2011). The nature of death is viewed by each one of us
differently and this paper is going to discuss the values and beliefs of different religions on death.
This paper is going to look at Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Shinto religion
discussing what the nature of death virtues and values are. Finally discussing the overall understand
of the nature of death within all these religions.
Hinduism is a religion that follows concepts of the Upanishads, which includes the Brahman,
Atman, Maya, Karma, Samsara, and Moksha. The concepts provide guidance throughout life and
are key to a final death. The Brahman is something one believes in and is experience in the world
that surround him. The Atman is who we are the identity of our soul, an understanding we are not
just a body we are more. The term Brahman refers to the experience of the sacred within nature
and the external universe, while Atman refers to the experience of the sacred within oneself
(Molloy, 2013, p. 83). Along with understanding the spiritual aspect of nature and one s soul is
understanding how this effects every living thing. The Maya which can be referred to as magic or

The Use of Selective Exposition in The Lottery, by Shirley...
A typical story is littered with details, explaining the history of the world the story takes place in,
who the characters in the story are, all the while remaining correlated to the plot and subplots
that drive the story forward. The story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson however does not follow
these conditions, as the reader is left to interpret a majority of the story on their own as it
progresses. Jackson is not the only writer to incorporate a style of selective exposition in their
work; Raymond Carver is widely recognized for his rejection of explanation and the use of
characters that do not always communicate with one another, both of which are elements which
Jackson incorporates into her own story. Initially, a lack of exposition... Show more content on

Accordingly the reader has had ample time to form whatever interpretations they may have about
the lottery, even given the sparse information that the story provides. What is certain about the
story leading up to the very end, is that everyone in the town takes place in the lottery regardless
of age, that there s been a lottery for as long as anyone can remember, that this village is not the
only one that keeps this practice, and that it is a declining practice (Jackson 239). Despite
whatever conceptions the reader may draw about the mystery of the lottery, the truth is so
unexpected that it perfectly demonstrates how something can possess immense and startling
power (May 48). The reader discovers that the lottery is actually a public stoning. The exact
process is that everyone draws a piece of paper from a box, and whoever draws the paper marked
with a black spot, is stoned to death. An important thing to note is that in the beginning of the story,
the villagers made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square (Jackson 235). These stones are
not mentioned until the very end, where the villagers proceed to bludgeon the unlucky winner of
the lottery. This brutal image is enough to shatter any preconceived notions the reader may have
formed, thus raising another mystery: what is the purpose of the lottery?
Despite the many blanks that the reader is left to fill in, all of them

The Theme Of Fate In I Am Mordred
Fate in I Am Mordred
The idea that fate is inevitable manifests itself throughout the Arthurian legend I am Mordred. Fate
s a predestined fortune that is supposedly inevitable. (fate) The question of changing fate prevails
as an underlying theme in the book. Characters lives and choices revolve around the idea of their
predetermined destiny. It proves difficult to decide whether fate is escapable or not.
From the beginning of the book Mordred s fate plays a key factor in characters actions. The king s
advisor Merlin prophesied Mordred to kill his father, King Arthur, when he reaches the age of
seventeen. When the prologue starts King Arthur s sacrificing all the male babies in the
kingdom who were born on May Day, including Mordred. This will supposedly change the fate
prophesized for them according to his advisor Merlin. But Merlin had spoken: Let all male
babies of the nobility born on May Day be brought to the shore. That was the sort of thing that
happened when the King did wrong (Springer Vii). King Arthur thought by doing this he had
managed to avoid his predestined doom. As soon as chapter one starts, it reveals one baby out
of the forty brought to sea managed to survive. That one baby was King Arthur s son, Mordred.
He was saved by a couple who lived by the sea. They raise him as their own and he becomes a part
of their fisher family. At this point Mordred has not managed to escape his fate and King Arthur
hasn t either.

English has now become the Lingua Franca of the business world. In the business world, partners
and companies belonging to different nations and cultures conduct operations in either one of the
languages of the involved or in a neutral language, known as the Lingua Franca. Lingua Franca
signifies the common language or the common language for speakers of different first languages
and can also be referred to as the; bridge, working, vehicular or trade language.
The term linguistic imperialism and linguistic relativism are key in understanding a language as a
Lingua Franca. Linguistic imperialism stands for a dominant nation s practice of transferring it s
cultural, social, political and, even, economic features and ideologies by transferring its language to
other nations and according to Phillipson (1992), the dominance of English needs to be asserted
and maintained with continuous reconstruction of cultural inequalities between English and other
languages . Phillipson claims that English achieved its dominant position as the principal world
language because it has been actively promoted as an instrument of foreign policy of the major
English speaking states (Phillipson 1992:1). Linguistic relativism, on

The Characters of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest in Film...
The Characters of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest in Film and Novel One Flew Over the
Cuckoo s Nest was a critically acclaimed novel written by Ken Kesey and later on a movie
adaptation, directed by Milos Forman, which was similarly critically acclaimed earning itself an
extremely high 96% on rotten tomatoes. However said appraisal of both works, does not excuse
the gleaming errors and artistic licensing seen throughout the entirety of the film. Granted there
were no major plot holes and alterations present, the physical descriptions of the various characters
within the story as well as their behavior differed quite a bit from their silver screen counterparts.
The most critical physical and behavioral differences can be seen quite clearly... Show more content

5) Kesey throughout the novel repeatedly gives the character of Nurse Ratched a almost robotic
feel, but Forman felt that a different take on her character was appropriate so, The Nurse
Ratched that the viewer is greeted with on the big screen, became one of the typical dime a
dozen, strict and over bearing evil stepmother stereotype popularized by many Disney movies
(such as snow white s evil stepmother), Forman s portrayal of the Nurse although was different
than the book both physically the mentally, her actress Louise Fletcher still did a exemplary job
portraying the dark bitter women that the Nurse (at the core) really is. Forman gave the audience
a more relatable antagonist while taking away elements of cruelty. Yet the Nurse was not alone
on this metamorphosis of traits, the protagonist s McMurphy as well has been subjected to
extreme artistic licensing and differs quite a lot from his novel counterparts. In the novel
McMurphy is described as being large bobbling , obnoxious, overly social/talkative redhead. The
McMurphy of the film, however, is about average in size, and even though he is shown to be a
blabbermouth at time, he does not give of the impression of being

Reflection Paper On Dietetics
This fall semester I had the pleasure of taking NHM 195 and fascinating and exciting is probably
an understatement about the class. From day one I was intrigued by the new ideas and facts about
dietetics. I liked the real life lectures we had a chance of watching and the medical dictionary
exercises that have absolutely sharpened my medical vocabulary immensely. In this class we
learned about the three different types of dietetic programs: Didactic Program in Dietetics(DPD,
Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CP), and Dietetic technician program (DT). The DPD is the
educational requirements all students wanting a career in dietetics. The program usually takes four
years to complete and contains classroom work along with lab work. The program has classes that
deals with clinical nutrition, chemistry, microbiology,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
RD s could work in so many different places such as long term care facilities, public health, food
service management for schools, hospitals, colleges, universities, and private practice. An RD
median salary is about $58,000 a year. This is under what I believe it should be but it is a good
living for someone who loves what they do. There are many ways to make a great living being a
RD because of the vast pool of jobs that are needed. For those who do not join the DPD program
to become a licensed RD, there are great opportunities to further education and there is a wide
variety of skill sets that can be learned and joined by having a dietetic degree. If you choose to go
to graduate school you can apply for medical school , dental school, physical therapy schools just
to name a few. From what I have learned in this class is what I expected when making the
decision to attain this degree. This degree gives the student many options to find out form of health
service they love and it allows you to harness and fine tune your passion into a precision

The Giver And Caitlin Comparison Essay
Is Caitlin from dreamland and Jonas from The Giver really all that different? Caitlin is a girl
who is hidden in her sister s shadow, her sister runs away and she meets this boy Rogerson. She
dates him because he makes her feel different and she wants to be someone other than her sister.
Jonas lives in a community with lots of restrictions that are not as the eye could see. He wants to
try and find new things besides his community because he feels that people shouldn t live like they
were living. They both have secrets that could cause serious consequences if they tell anyone.
Caitlin from dreamland and Jonasfrom The Giverhave similarities and differences. Jonas and
Caitlin are similar because they both want to be different from everyone else. For example,
Caitlin does not want to live in her sister s shadow and wants to be known as her own person. I
can relate her to Jonas when he does not want to live in the Community s shadow because he does
not think what they are doing is right. In addition, Caitlin and Jonas are similar because they both
have a secret that they can... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One has a secret that is bad and one has a secret that is good. Jonas s secret has to do with how
he has memories from the past which is not necessarily bad. Rogerson is abusing Caitlin and she
can t say anything because he will hurt her anymore. Sarah dessen wrote, He slapped me hard
across the other cheek, and it felt like part of my face was shattering into tiny pieces... What
happened to you, Caitlin? I fell, I said quickly, even as she leaned in close, brushing my hair off
my forehead . Jonas cannot say to anyone that he has memories of the past, but he feels different
and has never experienced anything like it. In the Giver it states 4. Do not discuss your training
with any other member of the community, including parents and elders . Jonas and Caitlin have
many secrets that they can not

  • 2. Heritage Differences In Everyday Use By Alice Walker Heritage Differences In the short story Everyday Use , by Alice Walker she represents the conflicts and struggles of the African American culture in rural Georgia around the early 1970 s. Alice Walker introduced 4 main characters; Mama and her two daughters, Maggie and Dee as well as Dee s boyfriend Hakim a barber. Mama is the narrator of the story, she is both a mother and father to her daughters as she is uneducated but worked years of physical labor and lives in poverty. Maggie is the youngest daughter who s shy and lives with Mama, she lacks confidence and is unable to be open nor make eye contact with the people talking to her. Mama s older daughter, Dee who renamed herself as Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo is educated, determined, and confident. She declares that she is the one who is looking at the important aspects of her family history and Mama and Maggie aren t aware of it. Everyday Use carries many different meanings that highlight the issue of how things are used on an everyday basis. Understanding their family African heritage was a big concept for Dee. As Mama and Dee had two different opinions about heritage which caused conflict about whom should keep the quilts from Maggie and Dee. Everyday Use is a focus on the bonds women have between different generations and legacies for example, the Quilts. Mama and Maggie see a different usefulness to the quilts compared to Dee, the quits represent matters such as reading, race and class, among others. Quilting in Everyday Use symbolizes family heritage. They are a history of papers in fabric that vary over generations. They symbolize the family s history of pride, poverty and struggle. Mama and Dee have different perspectives on what the quilts mean to the family heritage. As to Mama, the quilts have a special significance; when she goes to touch them, she is feeling the people who represented them, the ones who worked on them in her family. It represents the bond between women of different generations in their family. The quilts to Mama don t only represent her understanding of heritage but also shows how she s connected to them with her family. I took it for a moment in my hands. • 5. The Importance Of Conflict Resolution The term conflict resolution implies that the purpose of interventions is to resolve the conflict (Barsky, 2017, p. 4). Conflict resolution was significant in my childhood, upbringing, and origin. Conflicts were resolved through varied approaches including prayers, counselling, and confrontations. Currently, these practices have influenced the way I handled conflictboth at a professional and a personal level. Resolving Conflicts Through Prayer Last school year, one of my students, continued to be disruptive in one of the core classes. Many forms of interventions were employed including meeting the counselor, allowing time for de escalation, and meeting with the social worker twice per week. None of these interventions seemed to be effective. I realized that the student needed divine intervention. One of my colleagues and myself, decided to pray consistently for improvement in the student s behavior. Through prayer, we identified that the student s poor social skills were because of low self esteem. With praise and affirmation, the student s negative behaviors soon diminished and the student started to exhibit appropriate mannerisms. Thus, prayer changes things; my parents benefited from this practice and I am still a beneficiary of divine intervention for conflict resolution. Resolving Conflicts Through Counseling Resolving conflicts through counseling was also prevalent in my upbringing. Counseling involved a mediator of a reputable character. One of the biggest lesson imparted on me from Indian culture was about language. In Indian culture, a person shows respect to everyone. We call adults not related to us uncle and auntie as a sign of respect towards our elders. We even call kids older than us Chetan and Chachi in the part of India that my family comes from since they are technically our elders as well. Since the use of expletives would be considered disrespectful, it was forbidden in my family. In fact, when I was a kid, the word stupid was considered taboo. It was so insignificant that I don t even remember what I got so angry over. So I said the word stupid while my dad. It was one of the less wise decisions I made my life. One of the most basic beliefs we carry about ourselves, Dweck found in her research, has to do with how we view and inhabit what we consider to be our personality. A fixed mindset is that we assumes that our intelligence, character, and creativity are static traits givens which we can t change in any way, and success is the allegation of that inborn intelligence, an estimate of how those givens measure up against an equally fixed standard; aiming for prosperity and dodging failure becomes a way of claiming the sense of being smart or skilled. David Guetta is able to enhance the lyrics of this song by including several loud breaks within this song. During these breaks, Ratliff describes how the loud bass drum beats away all the white noise. I found it interesting how uncomfortable the white noise sounded, and I think the song would sound terrible if this loud bass drum was taken out. Additionally, I think that if the bass drum was taken out, the song would not contain such a double meaning. These preexisting sounds make this song sound alien to the music from today; as a result, the music ends up reminding the listener of similar music from the 1960s. This gives the beat more pull whenever the snare beat finally comes around, as opposed to the snare being hit on the second and fourth beat. Furthermore, the castanets played throughout this song sound very Latin. In our age of electronic music, we typically use other electronic sounds in the background take the place of castanets. • 13. The Importance Of Objectivity In Art As Gombrich describes, objectivity is the ability to represent something exactly as it is seen in nature without any influence. According to Gombrich, the objectivity of the representation in a work of art does not define how correct or real the art is. On the contrary, realism is defined by the information conveyed from the art. If the information is correct, the work is realistic. Gombrich believes this because there are multiple limits to representing objectively. One of the most prominent limits is style because as much as any artist would like to recreate nature objectively, style overrules. Every artist has a unique temperament which is represented in their work, making it a limit to representing an objectobjectively. Furthermore, the style itself is a limit to objectivity as well. Style includes but is not limited to the method of recreation or technique. The choice of technique restricts the artist freedom of choice as the artist can only render what his technique is capable of rendering. Not only is the limit to objectivity seen in the work of art itself, but it is also present in viewing nature itself with the eyes. The artist will see certain aspects of nature that others will not see based on his technique. For example, an artist drawing a scene will focus on the scene in terms of lines. Another limit to objectivity is the preference of an artist. An artist will only paint what he likes, which is what he can paint. Answer 2: I agree with all of Gombrich s ... There are many types of behaviour management and discipline strategies for the classroom. Some of the theories are directly applicable and some theories can use with our own personal mix. Understanding these theories can help educators define their own classroom management methods and make decisions about how to best approach interactions with students (Hussung, 2016). 2.4.1 The Assertive Discipline Model This theory, proposed by Lee Canter (1976), suggests that students positive behaviours should be recognized and encouraged. As per his theory, teachers should inform students about expectations they have as well as rules they have set. Once they inform students, they will closely monitor who follow these guidelines. According to his theory, teachers should be entrusted with the right to teach without any intervention, while students should learn without any interruption (Edu excellence organisation, 2016). Most important thing in this model is teacher always reinforced positive more than negative. However, if the student violates the rules persistently, then he or she is punished. This include five steps namely; warning the student, giving 10 minute time out in isolation, giving the student a 15 minute time out in isolation, calling the student s parents and finally, sending the student to the principal s office. The Ethics Of The Bhopal Disaster In the Business Ethics Foundation Terms class (September 2nd 2014), we discussed the ethical implications of the Bhopal disaster on December 2nd and 3rd, 1983. A plant that belonged to Union Carbide subsidiary had a chemical explosion, killing 10,000 lives (conservatively) and affecting the livelihood of local and their descendants. Although many reasons have been offered up to try to explain this disaster such as the poor establishment of the manufacturing plant, less stringent labor laws, non exist environment laws, as well as the negligence in educating the public and medical facilities in Bhopalabout the fatality of the pesticide. It is my opinion that the government should also have placed strict boundary rules to limit populations moving into the possible disaster zone. The government of Indias negligence lies in one or both of the following: not assessing the risk of building a manufacturing plant close to a populated city, ignoring the assessed risk inherent in the chemicals being manufactured, and jeopardizing the environment and population of Bhopal. This is not to say that the Union Carbide and its subsidiary were blameless, however the Government of India s lack of responsibility for its citizens can be proved when they underrepresented the victims in the UCC s settlement actions in 1989. Due to these reasons, I will argue in the following paragraphs that the Government of India has more responsibility than Union Carbide in not only the tragedy but also for ... At the start, King Duncan has a brave and loyal Thane called Macbeth. After three witches prophesize that Macbeth is destined to become king himself, Macbeth is overwhelmed with ambition and greed. Reinforced by the prophecy and his wife s encouragement, he takes the throne by murdering King Duncan. Eventually, Macbeths paranoia, and guilt lead him to conduct multiple murders to maintain his power. His trust in the witches results in his defeat and overthrow as he is murdered by those he has wronged. In this play Shakespeare uses language, conflict, and the supernatural to illustrate deception and the effects of self deception. Shakespeare s use of language in select scenes reveals Lady Macbeth s characters intentions.
