Valentine Carol Ann Duffy Essay
Writing an essay on the topic "Valentine" by Carol Ann Duffy can be quite challenging for
several reasons. Firstly, the poem itself is rich in symbolism and imagery, requiring careful
analysis to fully understand its deeper meanings. Unpacking Duffy's use of language, metaphors,
and structure demands a keen eye for detail and critical thinking skills.
Additionally, crafting an original and insightful essay on this topic requires more than just
summarizing the poem or regurgitating common interpretations. It necessitates the ability to
engage with the text on a profound level, exploring themes such as love, relationships, and the
human condition in a way that offers fresh insights and perspectives.
Moreover, considering the popularity of "Valentine" as a study text, there is a wealth of existing
scholarship and analysis available, making it essential for the essay writer to contribute something
new to the discourse. This requires extensive research and a thorough understanding of existing
interpretations to avoid redundancy and ensure originality.
Furthermore, interpreting poetry is inherently subjective, meaning there is often no single correct
interpretation. This ambiguity can make it challenging to formulate a coherent argument and
support it effectively with evidence from the text.
In conclusion, while writing an essay on "Valentine" by Carol Ann Duffy presents numerous
difficulties, it also offers an opportunity for intellectual growth and creative expression. By
approaching the poem with diligence, critical insight, and originality, one can produce a
compelling analysis that contributes meaningfully to the ongoing conversation surrounding this
celebrated work.

Conducting clinical research can help many patients; this is the powerful driving
force behind my compassion to pursue clinical research as my career.
I received my first residency training in medicine in China, where I obtained my
medical degree. After immigrated to the U.S with my parents, I completed my
USMLE exams while working as a medical extern in Lenox Hill Hospital with Dr.
Kirk Garratt in cardiology research and Dr. Yiming Yang, an interventional
cardiologist, and later as an intern in cardiac nuclear stress lab in the Heart
Vascular Hospital at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center in Huston. Witnessing
cardiac patients suffered from post cardiac event depression, I decided to play an
active role in bridging the clinical gap between cardiology and psychiatry. I
completed my psychiatry residency training and geriatric psychiatry training at the
New York Presbyterian Hospital /Columbia University Medical Center, and became

As more advanced EEG developed and in combined use of computational techniques,
they become the ideal non invasive and cost effective research instruments for
investigation of brain signals and autonomic reactivity in response to stimulation of
the brain. I am interested in obtaining additional research training in utilizing EEG
and ECG to conduct clinical trials in Alzheimer s disease, and applying computational
skills to analyze EEG and ECG data to unfold the functional and neural mechanisms
underpinning the neuropathology of the brain. My long term research goal is to
develop novel treatment interventions targeting these functional and neural
mechanisms. I feel fortunate that two established research mentors I identified, Dr.
D.P Devanand and Dr. Willman Fifer, who will devote their time and resources to
help me to develop the expertise and skills necessary to become an independent

Achieving Fit for Corporate Social Responsibility
Achieving Fit for Corporate Social Responsibility Evaluating the measure of
corporate social responsibility (CSR) is as much an attempt to ascertain ethical
conduct of interactions with stakeholders, as it is a management tool of to limit
liability. A research summary of Corporate Responsibility Best Practices, notes that
72% of NYSE Euronext traded firms surveyed have a formal corporate
responsibility programs in place (Corporate Responsibility Officer Association,
2011, p. 6). Just 20% of the surveyed firms did not view corporate responsibility as a
priority, while many firms believed that ethical corporate responsibility was ingrained
throughout their culture and functions. Realizing added value from CSR is best
achieved by fitting actions with motivations to concern both internal and external
stakeholders. Ronald Hill and Karen Becker Olsen find that CSR projects deliver
benefits to firms if there is a similarity between the corporate mission and the social
initiative, perceived motivations aimed at the good, and proactive timing (Hill
Becker Olsen, 2005). Poor fitting CSR initiatives are those the public perceives as
implying that the firm bears fault and is reactive. Press releases by British Petroleum
regarding their commitment to the Gulf demonstrate both a reactive and poorly fitted
motivation initiative that is unlikely to merit praise from the community harmed (BP
p.l.c., 2012). Additionally, measuring the success of a CSR initiative that is reactive

ISDN internet service is simply a telephone based network system that operates by a
circuit switch, or dedicated line. It can transmit data and phone conversations
digitally over normal telephone wires. This makes it both faster and of higher quality

Advantages of IP Telephony
Decreased costs : As the investment for VoIP service is maximized, the University of
Florida will realize a significant cost savings in its total costs of ownership and
operation. The immediate cost savings benefits will include:
1.Single cable and backbone infrastructure supporting both Voice and Data
2.Decreased cost of telephone moves 3.Reduced Centrex services line costs.
Long distance savings As IP Telephony deployment matures across the country and
into various business enterprises, there will be some savings in long distance
services, especially for our international calling users.
Mobility : When someone moves offices today, there is a corresponding change in
the cabling path to reach their telephone set in its new location. With IP Telephony,
in many cases you will be able to simply move your phone from one place to another.
Without any additional changes your telephone number will move with the
telephone. This is part of the expected significant savings the University will realize

Impact Bumpers On Truck Trailers
Currently, rear impact guards on truck trailers are effective at up to 30 mph. These
bumpers are also known as ICC bumpers or underride guards. That speed was set
because the crash protection standards that must protect occupants of passenger
vehicles is set at 30 mph. However, because passenger vehicles how must protect
occupants that are involved in frontal impact crashes at up to 35 mph, the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a notice of proposed
rule making that requires ICC bumpers to be withstand a crash at up to 35 mph.
The ICC bumpers are required on most trailers and semitrailers so that should a
vehicle hit the trailer from the rear, the guards keep the vehicle from going under the
trailer. According to the NHTSA, many newer trailers already meet this regulation. If
the regulation is put in place, it would affect Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards

Any time a smaller vehicle, especially a compact vehicle, runs into the back of a
large trailer, it has the potential to go so far under the trailer that the bottom of the
trailer could decapitate or otherwise harm those in the passenger vehicle. ICC
bumpers prevent this from happening at speeds under 35 or 30 mph.
Trucks Without Underride Guards or ICC Bumpers
Some trucks, such as dump trucks, are not required to have ICC bumpers. Although
the ICC bumpers don t protect vehicles that hit the trailer or trucks at the outer
edges, the bumpers have saved many lives in crashes where the vehicle struck a
truck or trailer from the inner edges to the center. Because they do work, the
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has asked the NHTSA to require that
rear impact guards are installed on dump trucks and other trucks that are not required
to have them.

Individuality In The Giving Tree By Shel Silverstein
One similarity that subsists between humans and trees is that of their sense of
individuality. In diverse ways, each human and tree display their unique sense of
character. No two trees display the same characteristics, just as no two humans ever
display the same personality. Both humans and trees are a source of their roots.
However, the branch of similarity between humans and trees doesn t only extend
between their source of individuality. Throughout the story The Giving Tree, written
by Shel Silverstein, both a humanand a tree display similarity as they neglect the
Categorical Imperative devised by Immanuel Kant.
Within Kant s Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals, the Categorical Imperative

Two Fundamental Differences Between Medical Doctors
And...
Chiropractic Myths
When it comes to chiropractic, the general public have come a long way with their
basic understanding of what they actually do, but there are still some myths and
mystery which continue to surround this profession. There are two fundamental
differences between medical doctors and doctors of chiropractic. A standard doctor is
a general practitioner (GP) who applies medical knowledge to treat patients when a
symptom presents itself. A chiropractor is a specialist who corrects spinal alignment
with highly specialised manipulation techniques, encouraging the body s well being,
with a holistic philosophy. Here are a couple of common misconceptions.
Myth 1 Is a Chiropractor a REAL Doctor?
Once a doctor of chiropractic achieves their degree, their learning institution grants
them a DC or Doctor of Chiropractic degree. This takes several years and requires
lengthy study. They are licensed health care providers and follow a similarly fierce
and gruelling medical curricula to that of a degree in medicine. In fact, they spend
more hours in the classroom than their medical counterparts. As with medical doctors,
prior to graduation, supervised residency work is required with real patients and these
are undertaken in a clinical environment.
Chiropractors are subject to government standards and national peer review boards
and in many countries, including Australia, are included in compensation
programmes such as Medicare. The main difference between medical doctors
Fuzzy Logic Is a Way to Deal with Imprecise Concepts Essay
As I sit down to write this paper, I am also waiting for my laundry to finish. I set
the machine to auto load size and dumped my clothes in, oblivious to the actual
size of the load. The machine can calculate the size of the load for me, and assure
that my clothes are washed at the proper temperature for the proper amount of
time. This is accomplished through the use of what is referred to as soft
computing, pioneered by a man named Lofti Zadeh (Peterson). Lofti Zadeh was
born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1921. The son of an Iranian journalist and a Russian
physician, Zadeh s early life was spent under the influence of Soviet ideas. In an
interview with Betty Blair, Zadeh speaks of how the Soviet schools of his childhood

The choice is no longer just zero or one. Fuzzy logic allows for fuzzy sets, which do
not rigidly follow a yes or no logic when attempting to determine the elements of such
a set. Fuzzy sets can include partial elements; elements that may or may not belong to
the set depending on other circumstances (Peterson). Because of this flexibility, fuzzy
sets are used in soft computing, a process engineers now use in many modern home
appliances. Prior to the 1970 s, fuzzy logic had not been put into practical, real world
use. This changed when many Japanese manufacturers began to implement simple
fuzzy systems in their household products, leading to the vast amount of items which
make use of soft computing today (Zadeh).
To go back to a previous example, my washing machine determines which type of
cycle to use based on the weight of the clothing. A small load or a medium load is
not rigidly defined, but the fuzzy logic allows the washing machine to approximate
the type of cycle it should use. An amount of clothes on the cusp of both small and
medium could be placed in either category, depending on other variables such as
fabric mix and the amount of detergent ( Fuzzy logic ). In this specific example
fuzzy logic and soft computing can lead to errors, such as a wash cycle erroneously
stopping after the clothes become heavier due to

crucial impact that fast food restaurants have in today s nation s youth causing them
to be over weight and have type 2ndiabetes. Throughout Zinczenko s argument he
makes the reader view the consumer as a victim yet on the other hand, what he is
trying to persuade us to believe by using logos, pathos, and ethos in his argument is
that the food industry is the one making the nation s youth to increase obesity. The

The personal experience Zinczenko s includes in his text many people can relate
who have been or are going through a similar situation. At this stage we can view
imagery in the text as the reader I can picture a young boy being lazy, laying in bed
which is perhaps gaining weight constantly and many dangerous diseases on the
long run. The author is a very smart intiligual writer that acquires the reader to have
trust in him by sharing his experience and how he overcame his struggles and why
he believes fast food restaurants are the main reason the nation youth suffers from
over weight and diabetes. Hidalgo 3 The examles of ethos that Zinczenko uses in
his writing are when he talks about how any calories you are eating when you eat at
a fats food restauant which he makes a remark comment about the government as
well. The author tends to use this to sway the reader emotion and attention to use
such detailed ideas and examples all of this makes the reader think and emotions.
Zinczenko also tells us how he over came his eating struggles by avoiding fast food
restaurant and staying occupied however he still has the mentality that what is
cuasimg individuals to be over weight is fast food restaurants which goes against his
claim. I find it very intriguing how he states that the responsibilities of asking the
right choices are your yet he argues that the restaurants

Sonnet 138 Analysis
The textual differences between the 1599 and 1609 renditions of Shakespeare s
Sonnet 138 subtly change the meaning and shift the focus of the poem. Most
notably, in the 1609 rendition, more emphasis is placed on their shared complicity
and Shakespeare more vividly paints his mistress as an individual opposed to a
third party construct. To begin, note the difference in lines 6 8 of both renditions:
Although I know my years be past the best, / I, smiling, credit her false speaking
tongue, / Outfacing faults in love with love s ill rest (1599) versus Although she
knows my days are past the best, / Simply I credit her false speaking tongue: / On
both sides thus is simple truth suppressed (1609). In the 1599 rendition, Shakespeare
admits to knowing he is old while in the 1609 rendition, his mistress is doing the
knowing. By changing the pronouns, Shakespeare makes their deceit seem more
mutual because she actively recognizes his age. Obviously, Shakespeare knows he is
old what matters is how much his mistress knows it. Allowing his mistress to do the
knowing heightens her deceit and by extension their mutual duplicity because the text
plainly conveys what she is lying about. Similarly, Shakespeare s complete rework of
line 8 in the 1609 rendition further shifts the focus by candidly admitting that On both
sides the ugly truth is being ignored. In the 1599 rendition, there is a very vague and
ineffective attempt at imagery instead due to the words outfacing and the
Beach Erosion in Southern California
Beach erosion is a serious issue today especially with human civilization building
cities near the coast and disrupting the natural distribution of sediment deposition for
our own convenience. Especially in southern California, beach erosion has some
serious social, economic and environmental impacts on our society as a whole.
Along with the rise of our sea levels due to global warming melting our polar ice
caps, this erosionis having profound effects on coastal societies and has damaging
effects on infrastructure worldwide. With human ingenuity, we have come up with
various methods such as hard and soft engineering in order to both prevent and
mitigate the effects of beach erosion.
Introduction
There are 2 types of beaches. One is erosion dominant and the other is deposition
dominant. The erosion dominant one has more erosion than deposition so the
beaches shrink.
In the other case, if there is more deposition than erosion, then the beaches grow due
to more sand being deposited upon it. The only reason why beaches shrink is due to
erosion and this can happen for a variety of reasons. One reason being that if a shore
tends to receive more destructive waves than constructive waves, then the beach will
erode over time. This is because destructive waves erode and constructive waves
deposit sediment. A very relevant example is that the beaches in southern California
are naturally shrinking right now because they aren t receiving enough sediment from

Health Care Administrator Of A Hospital
Disasters as we know it comes on suddenly without warning, it can happen
anywhere, anytime or at any hour. In order to regain control of an event is to be
prepared at all times. Often, danger occurs, leaving many lives unprepared for
catastrophes or misfortunes. As a Health Care Administrator of a hospital it is
important to be prepared at all times, not only is it a duty, but it is the job of the
Administrator to ensure the safety of its patients at all times. Therefore, it is the
Administrator s duty to ensure their team is prepared at all times for any and all
disasters. Being prepared for each and every incident that arises saves that many
more lives. A conversation about Disaster Preparedness led me to speak with Artie
Salter. Mr. Salter is a Fireman/Emergency Medical Technician, who has been an
active for the more than 17 years at the Charleston County Fire Department, as the
Rank of a Lieutenant. His duty is to respond to emergency calls daily, however his
task as a Fireman/EMT is to be prepared to respond to any type of emergency. As a
result, some days he responds as a Fireman and on other days as an Emergency
Medical Technician. With years of experience, knowledge and understanding of
Disaster Planning, Artie has helped to open my eyes to the untold preparation a
fireman must endure to protect the community in which we live. There are many
days of training and drills that each fireman must attend and pass in order to be
prepared for any and every

Although the new guidelines were implemented to ensure better health outcomes
for donors, the changes put new strains on a system that sees a small portion of
Canadians donating. In 2014 reports showed than only 3.7% of eligible donators
donated blood, which resulted in the Canadian Blood supply to hit a record 5 year
low (McGinn, 2014) .As a result of low percentage of Canadian donating blood the
CBS has indicated over the past 16 weeks there has been a shortage of 10, 00 units
of blood, as the optimal level is noted to be between 20, 000 and 30, 000 units
(Canadian Blood Services, 2017c). Again, this indication shows that there is a
shortage of donators, and readily accessible units of blood if needed in a potential
emergency, or occurrence, such as weather, which prevented new donations.

Tennessee Williams s Tragic Comedy
Once Williams made a name for himself, during his time at school, he rose in
popularity rather fast. While he was at the start of his career, he would become so
full of energy [h]e probably needed some of those boosters to help maintain that
fast paced, energetic level of performance (Herbert 65). Even though he was
energetic enough and look as if to have unlimited jokes, he was said to have stolen
other comedian jokes. Many other comedians would not perform in front of
Williams in case he decided to steal their work. Ultimately, he began staying outside
whichever club he was performing at that night so one could blame him for stealing
jokes but, there [appeared to be] some professional jealousy going on (Herbert 67).

Chapter 1
The Problem and its Background
Introduction
An internship program in St. jude College takes one year to complete, 1st semester
as a junior intern and second semester as a senior intern. Rad tech interns are very
much prone to a lot of stress in the x ray department which obviously has either a
mild or an adverse effect on their performance. In being a 4th year student in the
course Bachelor of Science Radiologic Technology, at St. Jude College and any
other schools, everyone must take the internship programs being offered to the
students, in order for them to accomplish and fulfill the course. And be able to take
the board exam and be a registered Radiologic Technologist.
Stress can be defined as the sum of physical and mental responses to an unacceptable
disparity between real and imagined personal experience and personal expectation.
Hence, stress is a response that which includes both physical and mental components.
Stress is not a new issue. However, in recent years it has become more apparent. It
can be defined as environmental factors which exert undue strain or pressure on a
person and can be caused by numerous factors either at home or in the workplace.

Overview
Arthritis is a disease that is affecting a larger population and the healing depends on
whether an individual takes it seriously or neglects it. When arthritis is treated at is
early stages the joints may totally heal with the simple remedies. At the chronic stage
the home remedies will only help to reduce inflammation and the pain but the
condition may come back later. Arthritis occurs when the immune systemtreats the
joints as bacteria that can cause infection. Under normal circumstance, the immune
system attacks the bacteria that are a threat to the body. It therefore attacks the joints
causing inflammation. Most people like natural things that do not have negative ...

Biblical Allusions In The Poisonwood Bible
While reading The Poisonwood Bible by Kingsolver we understand the biblical
influence in the Prices family and the overall book, however upon closer
examination one finds many biblical allusions. Yet, rather than simply portraying
the story and message in an attempt to convey it to the world, it seems as if
Kingsolver desires that those who analyze her seemingly complex book through
these allusions will understand her characters on a deeper level and experience
what they re going through personally. As read in How to Read Literature Like a
Professor s sixth chapter ... Or The Bible; biblical allusions are meant to provide in
depth analysis of a story or character. The reason these biblical references are used,

Internal Audit Of The California Department Of Public...
INTRODUCTION
In compliance with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
(CDPHE) Internal Audit Charter, we have completed an audit of the internal controls
on sole source contracting throughout the department. Our audit was conducted in
accordance with the Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.
Sole Source purchases are defined as those purchases where only one vendor for the
good or service being acquired is available. State Procurement Rules R 24 103 205,
allows a Sole Source declaration to be made by the Purchasing Agent on a purchase
when one or more of the following conditions are met: (i) where the compatibility of
equipment, accessories, or replacement parts is the paramount consideration;
(ii) where a sole supplier s item is needed for trial use or testing;
(iii) where public utility services are to be procured.
PURPOSE
Our overall audit objective was to ascertain whether the department has sufficient
controls to ensure that sole source contracts are used in compliance with the State
Procurement Code.
Within the overall audit objective, specific goals included determining whether:
Divisions have proper procedures in place to determine if a vendor is the only vendor
available to provide the goods or services.
Divisions are properly documenting their research and results for contract files.
SCOPE AND METHODOLOGY
Our study and evaluation were conducted in accordance with the International

Baroque Er The Baroque Period
The Baroque period spanned from 1600 to 1750. It was a time where new ideas
were discovered and original boundaries were broken to reveal completely different
aspects to architecture. Seen as an artistic style, Baroque was a powerful period, full
of flamboyant concepts, derived to create drama. The Baroqueperiod produced many
magnificent buildings, every one extremely detailed.
The catholic church started the Baroque movement through their bid to reclaim their
crowd. The church attempted to do this through the use of art, in the hope that it
would attract people, often done through detailed buildings, but also through the use
of dramatic sculptures and paintings.
The Baroque period is full of compelling new ides; architects began to experiment
with their buildings in many ways, one of which was their ability to theoretically
captivate spaces through the movement of the facade, becoming the first movement
to not build the buildings right along the boundary of the plot.
Another futuristic technique used by the baroque was publicly display the buildings
staircases as a key element of a building. Previous styles tended to conceal the
staircases, Baroque decided to use the movement between stories of a building as a
feature element; not only did they display them, they brought them to the fore front
of buildings to create a powerful statement.
Buildings built in the movement were symmetrical, this was a continued trait from
the renaissance period. In addition to this, the
Literary Analysis Of Once More To The Lake
Literary Analysis: Once More to the Lake and Forgetfulness The poem
Forgetfulness by Billy Collins and the passage Once More to the Lake by E.B
White, both use devices to develop a similar theme of time. The poem Forgetfulness
uses figurative language and describing words to develop a theme of forgetfulness,
while Once More to the Lake uses flashbacks and sensory details to develop a theme
of accepting aging. In the passageOnce More to the Lake , a man struggles with his
identity while at the lake with his son. The two passagesOnce more to the Lake and
Forgetfulness both use devices to develop the common theme that of, time is the
greatest enemy.
First and foremost, Once More to the Lake by E.B White develops the theme by
applying amazing flashbacks and outstanding sensory details. In the passage White
struggles with his identity and accepting reality which leads to a huge problem that
developed, man vs self. By returning to the lake with his son, White remembers all
the memories he had built in the years before when he went with his father, I guess
I remembered clearest of all the early mornings, when the lake was cool and motion
less, remembered how the bedroom smelled of the lumber it was made of and of the
wet woods whose scent entered through the screen (White page 1). The sensory detail
in that line helped the readers picture the surroundings and to show how much love
White has for the lake and the memories he created in the past. During the

Introduction: This essay will focus on one of Rome s most well preserved
monuments. A monument which stood the test of time, ever since reflecting an
important part of Rome s military history in a well preserved state, the Trajan s
Column. In this essay I will discuss who Trajan, the man who gave the Trajan s
Column its name, was and why he decided to build such a complex monument for
himself. What he was trying to tell the people and visitors of Rome with this
monument and look into the initial construction history. It will also be debated if
the Trajan s Column was a work of propaganda, or if there is after all more to it. A

Awake of the Civil War
In the wake of the Civil War, Congress acceded to pressure to have the federal
government intercede to secure African Americans rights. What were some of the
long range effects of that government posture? The Union Victory in the Civil War
in 1865 granted freedom to approximately 4 million slaves, however, the process of
rebuilding the South during the Reconstruction period 1865 1877 brought a lot of
challenges. In 1865 and 1866 under the supervision of President Andrew Johnson,
new Southern state legislatives passed the black codes to control the labor and
behavior of former slaves and other African Americans. During the Radical

Although freedom to become citizens took longer and the fight more difficult, a
great number of African Americans steadily gained various rights which
accumulated over time. It is important to note that racial segregations momentum
dissipated over time as more and more blacks held positions of authority and
congressional approval overwhelmingly supported more rights for blacks.
Nonetheless, it is also imperative to consider how white supremacists such as the
KKK fought to undo the important developments. Till this day, both the executive
legislative and judiciary wings of government are constantly battling instances of
racial segregation. However, the long range effects of federal government struggle
to secure equal rights for African Americans has been significant successes in the
rise of African American entrepreneurship. The proliferation of blacks in both
government and civil society, the rise of blacks in academia, sports and liberal arts
are long effects of the fight for African American rights. This has progressively
opened up American society and in a way, levelled the playing field. Also this
federal government action to intervene in the affairs of the state has lived on
throughout the 21st century. Reference Carson, C., Lapsansky Werner, E. J. amp;

Ancient Egyptian Civilization
The ancient Egyptian civilization is arguably the oldest civilization in the world. It
is believed to have emerged around 5,500 years ago, although some scholars have
estimated an even earlier date. During the predynastic period the Egyptians were not
united, but as the Sahara desert expanded many people began moving their
settlements around the Nile River. These settlements started coming together to form
towns. As these towns progressed they developed many new ideas to help the
society run smoother. However the total unification and start of the ancient Egyptian
civilization did not happen, until Hierakonpolis expanded and conquered Naqada.
The ancient Egyptian civilization was now created. Since this civilization was one
of the first in the world, there was no structure to start with. In order to function as a
thriving civilization, the Egyptians had to accomplish agricultural, architectural,
medical, and educational advancements. The ancient Egyptian s advancements in
agriculture is one of the driving forces that lead to the success of their empire. The
Egyptian civilization came together because of the need for fertile soil and a
constant supply of water. Although the Nile was a constant supply of water, the
Egyptians still needed to find a way to bring the water to their crops. Murray shows
the reason why irrigation was needed, In Egypt, 6000 years ago, when the latest rainy
interlude began to wane, neolithic tribesmen from both sides flocked into the Nile

Argumentative Essay On Learning And Learning
Children can learn about the world through reading material, whether that instruction
is intended or not by the author, and whether the instruction is overt or relatively
hidden. From cautionary, moral tales of old to modern problem novels and books for
children about life issues, authors show and explain the world to the next generation.
Matilda grew up in a family, where they did not value education or learning. While
her parents went to work, she stayed home and was expected to watch TV or do
nothing. Instead, she walked to the library and read books everyday. She learned
many things from reading and begged her father if she could attend school like
other kids her age. She read about history, law and many other educational topics
that she could be learning if she was in school. Children are sponges for information
around them. Children gather this information from a variety of sources, such as
family, peers, and experience. In Matilda s case, she learned the most from literature
and Miss Honey. Her parents did not encourage learning and her headmaster was
cruel to all the students, ...children can develop understanding of themselves and

The Success Of The American Revolution
The thirteen American colonies wanted to be free from rule by Great Britain.
Freedom would make it possible to create a new kind of government without a king.
In the democracy envisioned by the country s earliest leaders, Americans would
govern themselves based on certain principles or ideals. Few people at the time
thought that the American Revolutionwould succeed and the Americans could win a
war against the world s greatest empire. At the beginning of the war, there was no
regular American army, just a militia made up of civilians and most of them were
farmers. Naturally, they were not used to long campaigns or battles with British
Regulars, and thousands quit. General Washington begged the Continental
Congress to provide a regular army of men enlisted for a long term, but Congress
felt that step would violate civil liberties. It was only after so many American
defeats threatened the war effort that Congress agreed to offer extra pay to
officers and privates and pledged to see the war to an end. By 1775, tension
between the colonies and the mother country had reached the breaking point.
British troops in Boston learned that the colonists had hidden a large collection of
weapons in nearby Concord. Sons of Liberty Paul Revere and William Dawes rode
to warn of the impending British attack by way of the Charles River; the most direct
route. Just as the sun was rising on April 19, 1775, British soldiers reached
Lexington. Eight Minutemen were killed and several others
Career Counseling, And Super s Development Theory
Career counseling theories are as diverse as the counselors who practice them and the
clients who experience them. Understanding and applying the appropriate theory for
each unique client is imperative. Many career counselors use a variety of theories and
techniques when working with students through their exploration and career
commitment process. Career theories I will describe in this piece include, Social
Cognitive Career Theory, Solution Focused Career Counseling, and Super s
Development Theory. Additionally, theories I do not see using in my practice

Three significant foundational themes of this theory are, self efficacy, outcome
expectations, and goals (Brown, 2016). Self efficacy is an individual s personal
beliefs about their ability to perform specific behaviors or tasks. Outcome
expectations refer to beliefs related to the valued outcomes or consequences
produced from executing behaviors. Goals are defined as the decision making
process to engage in a task or activity. How these variables interact with other
aspects of the persons environment, (gender, race, outcome hopes, personal goals,
and genetically determined characteristics), help in the career and academic
decision making process. It is also believed that individuals efficacy development is
influenced and altered when interacting with theses environments (Brown, 2016). In
short, individuals will mainly be interested in activities seen as possible and
achievable, and where they will experience positive results. SCCT is an appropriate
theory to apply with college students who choose a major based off a topic they did
well in during their undergraduate year. For example, a student who excelled in a
statistics class, might think they should become an accountant because they
achieved a high grade. On the contrary, college students may stay clear of certain
majors and careers because they did not do well academically. For example, a
student may want to be a doctor, but does not perform well in biology class, and

INFLUENZA Essay
INFLUENZA
Introduction
One can claim that influenza is an infection that has victimized people from just
about every generation that we have known. The term Influenza comes from the
Latin word influentia , first used by the Italians in the 1600 s. It is a highly
contagious infection particulary of the respiratory tract. In addition to us humans,
influenza can occur in pigs, horses, and several other mammals as well as in certain
wild and birds. It can also jump from specie to specie as observed in late 1997
when influenza from chickens was having its effects on people in Hong Kong.
Because influenza is highly contagious and spreads easily, it has appeared in our

Hemagglutinin is very important for the virus to bind to animal cells, for example, a
human red blood cell. This causes agglutination which is the clumping of the red
blood cells. Tests based on this simple clumping of the red blood cells is useful to
determine if one has influenza. The neuraminidase is used to cut off the viruses
hemagglutinin receptors when new viruses are produced and start budding off. It also
degrades the mucosal surfaces of the lungs and the throat to prevent being ejected.
This hampers the ability of the antibodies of getting into the lungs.
Spreading Multiplication
As soon as the virus is in the body, it uses the hemagglutinin to bind to the cell
surface. The membranes of the virus and the cell fuse togather and the capsid that
contains the single stranded RNA is released into the cytoplasm. The protein coat of
the virus dissassembles and then starts making viral proteins and viral RNA
copies. The new virus proteins are put togather near the cell membrane and then
bud off from the membrance. Influenza has a rapid onset and pronounced
symptoms. After the influenza virus invades a person s body, an incubation period
of one to two days passes before symptoms appear. For most people flu symptoms
begin to subside after two to three days and disappear in seven to ten days. However,
symptoms like coughing and fatigue may persist for two
Incorporation of Natural Capital into Mainstream Policies
Executive Summary
This paper objectively advocates a paradigm shift that incorporates natural capital into
mainstream policies, and businesses practices, at all levels. It sheds light on the role
and importance of valuing natural capital; reasons why it has not been properly
integrated into everyday decision making process; the risks associated with
negligence; and the benefits of integration. A few examples were enlisted to help
outline the opportunities that lie within the ecosystem, if only we can implement
practices to utilize it sustainably. Individuals, corporations, and governments, must
understand and account for their use of natural capital and be aware of the accurate
cost of human and economic security.
1.0 Introduction
Virgil (October 15, 70 BC September 21, 19 BC), a classical Roman poet once
quoted the greatest wealth is health . In the quest for wealth, human beings degrade
their health through actions such as sleep deprivation and stress from prolonged
work just to make so much wealth which we ultimately spend on replenishing health.
Depending on the level of damage done, we might not be able to sustain good health
and die. The above statement, even though blinkered, is an opening for our broader
focus of natural capital, which in spite of its utmost importance, is not appropriately
implemented in modern day decision making process. Natural capital refers to
environmental health and its primary function is life support. As human economic

How To Build An Arch In Roman Architecture
During the Roman era, architecture and building styles took many leaps forward.
This was partly due to the development of two key technologies: the arch and
concrete. These technologies, and others, gave the Romans new capabilities in both
domestic and public architecture, as well as the creation of infrastructure. In their
furthering the development of the arch, the Romans took inspiration from the
architectural achievements of their Greek neighbors (wikipedia). The arch was
often used in the construction of grand monuments, as a centerpiece of it s own.
These massive structures were constructed as a celebration by leaders, often to
celebrate victory in battle. Bas relief, featuring scenes of religion, warfare, and
ancestors, were carved into the arches. One well kept example is the Arch of
Septimius Severus at the Forum, erected AD 203 to celebrate his victories over the

Writing 2
Yijia Chen
In the article, The self in the age of Information, Kenneth Gergen argues that under
the information era, technology leads people to lose the self and reflect this lost on
the writing. Discussing the same period, Jeremy Rifkin in the chapter A Postmodern
Stage showed a more positive perspective about the change.
To support his argument, Gergen elaborates damages in the community and
institution that nurtured independent self, the direct erosion to solitary self. In the pre
modern world, people due to the lack of communication and transportation tools,
have fewer opportunities to get in touch with various people outside. Therefore,
people form consistent relationships with others, which derive a strong sense of
being somebody everyone is familiar with. However, the advances in
communication enable people to move household often and be in contact with a
wider range of friends leading to average weakening bonds with more and fast
changing friends. As a result of the decrease in deep relationships, in Gergen s
notion, people receive less sense of identification. Moreover, the multi voices raised
today and the suspicions over speakers motivations confuse people from faith to
distrust.
Other than environmental factors, Gergen addresses the erosion of the essential self
directly undermine the intelligibility of the tradition self. People can t make
independent and rational decision because of the conflicting stands they held in the

Realism, Liberalism, And Social Constructivism
Because global politics guarantees only anarchy and interaction, scholars must
analyze the international system using a variety of theories. Realism, liberalism, and
social constructivism are only a handful of lenses through which we view global
affairs. Realism suggests that anarchy causes states to fight for survival and the
balance of power. Liberalismsuggests that while states do fight to survive, anarchy
creates an environment conducive to cooperation. On the other hand, constructivism
suggests that people constructed this system of international relationsand anarchy is
what states make of it. Although each theory is different, they still seek to explain
both history and the contemporary world.
The realist approach to anarchy treats it as the main mode of the international system.
Realist theory states that because the international system is anarchic, survival acts as
a state s primary interest. Without a higher authority to regulate the actions of states,
much like a government regulates the actions of its citizens; states are free to do
whatever they please. Realism suggests that given this amount of power, along with
the primal and violent nature of humans, states must constantly fight to survive. The
self interest of the state comes before anything else, so conflict is always possible.
States only gain relative to other states because there can be no absolute winnings for
all states; a zero sum approach to power. Also, in the anarchic system states strive to

Robert Smithson s Spiral Jetty
In 1970, Robert Smithson created the Spiral Jetty with dump trucks, front loaders,
and a tractor to move the basalt stones and sand. The Spiral Jetty is located near the
Great Salt Lake of Utah. Smithson created this piece so that the land and the water
could meet. This artwork is supposed to change over time in response to the
environment. Robert Smithson represents the idea of entropy in the Spiral Jetty.
Therefore, this landscape looks different than whenever it was first established. The
Spiral Jetty is located at a terminal basin, which is a freshwater place with no outlet.
Whenever it is done flowing it will evaporate. So the water is dense with minerals
causing the high amount of basalt and sand. For this reason, not many plants
Ee Cummings Poetic Devices
People express their strong feelings in many ways, through actions, verbal or written
words. American poet, E.E. Cummings found his way of conveying his feelings to
the world through poems at a young age. Throughout his life, Cummings experienced
many ups and downs; from affairs to wars. Cummings unique style of poetry, filled
with broken rules, strong emotions and literary elements communicates true feelings
from the heart of Cummings from all that he experienced. His poem, I Have Found
What You Are Like , explores many of the poetic devices found in Cummings style,
interesting use of capitalization, punctuation and metaphors, that help to convey his
feelings to his readers.
Throughout his work, E.E. Cummings uses the visual effect of ... Show more content

Cummings often used metaphors in his poems to cleverly express his feelings of
both good and bad. Comparisons, metaphors or extended metaphors are seen
throughout his work, most commonly comparing Cummings subjects to nature.
By using metaphors throughout his poem, Cummings helps the reader understand
what he is truly meaning, and how he may see things, as they differ for each
person. In his poem I Have Found What You Are Like , an extended metaphor is
explored throughout his work, as Cummings compares this special someone to
certain aspects in nature. He starts off his poem comparing the person as a whole,
to a specific part of nature, i have found what you are like/the rain . Though this
statement could have been confusing, throughout the poem, he further elaborates
his true intentions of comparing her to rain. After a subject change in the poem,
Cummings specifically compares his feelings when his subject smiles as an
stirringofbirds between his arms . Hence more specifically explaining his heart
beating fast by the coolness of her smile. This also makes the poem interesting as it
keeps his theme of nature. In a separate poem, he again relates his subject to nature,
stating, it s you are whatever a moon has always meant/and whatever a sun will
always sing is you . These two lines of his poem [i carry your heart with me(i carry
it in] explains to whoever this is written to that he is the light in his life,
Reflection Paper On Time Management
DESCRIPTION
Time management is a tool that will aid in becoming a successful student. Time
management starts with setting SMART goals. A SMART goal is Specific,
Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time based. Once SMART goals are in
place use calendars to get organized. Keep a monthly calendar somewhere it can
easily be seen to write down goals or deadlines. A whiteboard is one suggestion for a
monthly calendar. Colors or symbols can be used on the calendars to quickly show
what is urgent and what can be delegated. Use a weekly calendar and schedule
class, study, work, and social time. When making a weekly calendar follow the rule
one hour of lecture time equals 2 hours of study. Following this rule would give a
person with 5 classes 30 hours of study time. The calendar created with the schedule
will help to create a task list. A task list consists of things that need to be done now
and things that can again be delegated. Setting small goals by month, week and then
by the task are the main tools to get organized using time management.
IMPACT
Learning about time management in EPS class was very informative and helped me
immensely. I now better understand exactly what time management is and how it
affects me as a student. I thought that I was an organized individual, but discovered
through this assignment I need some work on my discipline and organization skills.
Going through the steps that are needed to manage time and trying to put them to
work in real life was a
Analysis Of The Movie Miracle
Miracle review
During the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980. USA, a team that consisted of college
kids defeated the heavily favorite Soviet Union in hockey. Eventually, team USA
won the gold medal against Finland. USA s first gold medal since 1960 in hockey.
The 1980 USA hockey gold medal victory is arguably the greatest moment in U.S.
sports history. The 2003 film Miracleis about the events that led USA to victory.
Also, the film exemplifies that an underdog can truly win. In my opinion, the film
Miracle is the best well made and most influential sports movie. I give it 10 out 10
stars, based on the realistic action scenes, inspirational quotes and underdog story.
The first piece of criteria I used was Inspirational quotes. Quotes that have a deeper
meaning in them. In the movie, legendary head coach Herb brooks of team USA said,
Great moments are born from great opportunities . I find this quote inspirational
because it s a huge opportunity to represent your country and do something that
hasn t been in 20 years, which was winning the gold medal. Russia was going
through the Cold war. In addition, another memorable quote is, Mike Eurzione
Winthrop, Massachusetts! . Who do you play for? . I play for the United states of
America! . That s all gentlemen . This quote happened right after when the U.SA tied
the subpar Norwegian team 3 3. During the game, some of the players were
distracting themselves away from the
Green Marketing, Environmental Marketing And
Ecological...
Numerous individuals trust that green marketing alludes exclusively to the
advancement or publicizing of items with ecological qualities. Accordingly green
promoting consolidates an expansive scope of exercises, including bundling changes,
changes to the generation process, item adjustment and in addition changing or
altering publicizing.
Almost all the governing institutes and regimes around the world have concerned
about green marketing activities that they have endeavored to regulate them. For
example, in the United States (US) the Federal Trade Commission and the
National Association of Attorneys General have created broad records looking at
green advertising. There has been little try to scholastically inspect ecological or
green advertising. Be that as it may, to characterize green marketing is not a basic
undertaking. The phrasing utilized as a part of this range has fluctuated, it
incorporates: Green Marketing, Environmental Marketing and Ecological
Marketing. While green advertising became a force to be reckoned with in the late
1980s and mid 1990s, it was initially talked about much before. The American
Marketing Association (AMA) held the first workshop on Biological Marketing in
1975. The procedures of this workshop brought about one of the first books on
green advertising entitled Ecological Marketing . Green marketing is defined as
Environmental or Green Marketing comprises of all exercises intended to create and
encourage any trades proposed to fulfill

Achieving Fit for Corporate Social Responsibility Achieving Fit for Corporate Social Responsibility Evaluating the measure of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is as much an attempt to ascertain ethical conduct of interactions with stakeholders, as it is a management tool of to limit liability. A research summary of Corporate Responsibility Best Practices, notes that 72% of NYSE Euronext traded firms surveyed have a formal corporate responsibility programs in place (Corporate Responsibility Officer Association, 2011, p. 6). Just 20% of the surveyed firms did not view corporate responsibility as a priority, while many firms believed that ethical corporate responsibility was ingrained throughout their culture and functions. Realizing added value from CSR is best achieved by fitting actions with motivations to concern both internal and external stakeholders. Ronald Hill and Karen Becker Olsen find that CSR projects deliver benefits to firms if there is a similarity between the corporate mission and the social initiative, perceived motivations aimed at the good, and proactive timing (Hill Becker Olsen, 2005). Poor fitting CSR initiatives are those the public perceives as implying that the firm bears fault and is reactive. Press releases by British Petroleum regarding their commitment to the Gulf demonstrate both a reactive and poorly fitted motivation initiative that is unlikely to merit praise from the community harmed (BP p.l.c., 2012). Additionally, measuring the success of a CSR initiative that is reactive

Chiropractic Myths When it comes to chiropractic, the general public have come a long way with their basic understanding of what they actually do, but there are still some myths and mystery which continue to surround this profession. There are two fundamental differences between medical doctors and doctors of chiropractic. A standard doctor is a general practitioner (GP) who applies medical knowledge to treat patients when a symptom presents itself. A chiropractor is a specialist who corrects spinal alignment with highly specialised manipulation techniques, encouraging the body s well being, with a holistic philosophy. Here are a couple of common misconceptions. Myth 1 Is a Chiropractor a REAL Doctor? Once a doctor of chiropractic achieves their degree, their learning institution grants them a DC or Doctor of Chiropractic degree. This takes several years and requires lengthy study. They are licensed health care providers and follow a similarly fierce and gruelling medical curricula to that of a degree in medicine. In fact, they spend more hours in the classroom than their medical counterparts. As with medical doctors, prior to graduation, supervised residency work is required with real patients and these are undertaken in a clinical environment. Chiropractors are subject to government standards and national peer review boards and in many countries, including Australia, are included in compensation programmes such as Medicare. Because of this flexibility, fuzzy sets are used in soft computing, a process engineers now use in many modern home appliances. Prior to the 1970 s, fuzzy logic had not been put into practical, real world use. This changed when many Japanese manufacturers began to implement simple fuzzy systems in their household products, leading to the vast amount of items which make use of soft computing today (Zadeh). • 14. Sonnet 138 Analysis The textual differences between the 1599 and 1609 renditions of Shakespeare s Sonnet 138 subtly change the meaning and shift the focus of the poem. Most notably, in the 1609 rendition, more emphasis is placed on their shared complicity and Shakespeare more vividly paints his mistress as an individual opposed to a third party construct. To begin, note the difference in lines 6 8 of both renditions: Although I know my years be past the best, / I, smiling, credit her false speaking tongue, / Outfacing faults in love with love s ill rest (1599) versus Although she knows my days are past the best, / Simply I credit her false speaking tongue: / On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed (1609). In the 1599 rendition, Shakespeare admits to knowing he is old while in the 1609 rendition, his mistress is doing the knowing. By changing the pronouns, Shakespeare makes their deceit seem more mutual because she actively recognizes his age. Obviously, Shakespeare knows he is old what matters is how much his mistress knows it. Allowing his mistress to do the knowing heightens her deceit and by extension their mutual duplicity because the text plainly conveys what she is lying about. Similarly, Shakespeare s complete rework of line 8 in the 1609 rendition further shifts the focus by candidly admitting that On both sides the ugly truth is being ignored. In the 1599 rendition, there is a very vague and ineffective attempt at imagery instead due to the words outfacing and the

Beach Erosion in Southern California Beach erosion is a serious issue today especially with human civilization building cities near the coast and disrupting the natural distribution of sediment deposition for our own convenience. Especially in southern California, beach erosion has some serious social, economic and environmental impacts on our society as a whole. Along with the rise of our sea levels due to global warming melting our polar ice caps, this erosionis having profound effects on coastal societies and has damaging effects on infrastructure worldwide. With human ingenuity, we have come up with various methods such as hard and soft engineering in order to both prevent and mitigate the effects of beach erosion. Introduction There are 2 types of beaches. One is erosion dominant and the other is deposition dominant. The erosion dominant one has more erosion than deposition so the beaches shrink. In the other case, if there is more deposition than erosion, then the beaches grow due to more sand being deposited upon it. The only reason why beaches shrink is due to erosion and this can happen for a variety of reasons. One reason being that if a shore tends to receive more destructive waves than constructive waves, then the beach will erode over time. This is because destructive waves erode and constructive waves deposit sediment. A very relevant example is that the beaches in southern California are naturally shrinking right now because they aren t receiving enough sediment from the San

  • 25. Baroque Er The Baroque Period The Baroque period spanned from 1600 to 1750. It was a time where new ideas were discovered and original boundaries were broken to reveal completely different aspects to architecture. Seen as an artistic style, Baroque was a powerful period, full of flamboyant concepts, derived to create drama. The Baroqueperiod produced many magnificent buildings, every one extremely detailed. The catholic church started the Baroque movement through their bid to reclaim their crowd. The church attempted to do this through the use of art, in the hope that it would attract people, often done through detailed buildings, but also through the use of dramatic sculptures and paintings. The Baroque period is full of compelling new ides; architects began to experiment with their buildings in many ways, one of which was their ability to theoretically captivate spaces through the movement of the facade, becoming the first movement to not build the buildings right along the boundary of the plot. Another futuristic technique used by the baroque was publicly display the buildings staircases as a key element of a building. Previous styles tended to conceal the staircases, Baroque decided to use the movement between stories of a building as a feature element; not only did they display them, they brought them to the fore front of buildings to create a powerful statement. Buildings built in the movement were symmetrical, this was a continued trait from the renaissance period. In addition to this, the

The poem Forgetfulness uses figurative language and describing words to develop a theme of forgetfulness, while Once More to the Lake uses flashbacks and sensory details to develop a theme of accepting aging. In the passageOnce More to the Lake , a man struggles with his identity while at the lake with his son. The two passagesOnce more to the Lake and Forgetfulness both use devices to develop the common theme that of, time is the greatest enemy. First and foremost, Once More to the Lake by E.B White develops the theme by applying amazing flashbacks and outstanding sensory details. In the passage White struggles with his identity and accepting reality which leads to a huge problem that developed, man vs self. By returning to the lake with his son, White remembers all the memories he had built in the years before when he went with his father, I guess I remembered clearest of all the early mornings, when the lake was cool and motion less, remembered how the bedroom smelled of the lumber it was made of and of the wet woods whose scent entered through the screen (White page 1). The sensory detail in that line helped the readers picture the surroundings and to show how much love White has for the lake and the memories he created in the past. During the

It is important to note that racial segregations momentum dissipated over time as more and more blacks held positions of authority and congressional approval overwhelmingly supported more rights for blacks. Nonetheless, it is also imperative to consider how white supremacists such as the KKK fought to undo the important developments. Till this day, both the executive legislative and judiciary wings of government are constantly battling instances of racial segregation. It is believed to have emerged around 5,500 years ago, although some scholars have estimated an even earlier date. During the predynastic period the Egyptians were not united, but as the Sahara desert expanded many people began moving their settlements around the Nile River. These settlements started coming together to form towns. As these towns progressed they developed many new ideas to help the society run smoother. However the total unification and start of the ancient Egyptian civilization did not happen, until Hierakonpolis expanded and conquered Naqada. The ancient Egyptian civilization was now created. Since this civilization was one of the first in the world, there was no structure to start with. In order to function as a thriving civilization, the Egyptians had to accomplish agricultural, architectural, medical, and educational advancements. The ancient Egyptian s advancements in agriculture is one of the driving forces that lead to the success of their empire. The Egyptian civilization came together because of the need for fertile soil and a constant supply of water. Although the Nile was a constant supply of water, the Egyptians still needed to find a way to bring the water to their crops. Murray shows the reason why irrigation was needed, In Egypt, 6000 years ago, when the latest rainy interlude began to wane, neolithic tribesmen from both sides flocked into the Nile Valley

From cautionary, moral tales of old to modern problem novels and books for children about life issues, authors show and explain the world to the next generation. Matilda grew up in a family, where they did not value education or learning. While her parents went to work, she stayed home and was expected to watch TV or do nothing. Instead, she walked to the library and read books everyday. She learned many things from reading and begged her father if she could attend school like other kids her age. She read about history, law and many other educational topics that she could be learning if she was in school. Children are sponges for information around them. Children gather this information from a variety of sources, such as family, peers, and experience. In Matilda s case, she learned the most from literature and Miss Honey. Freedom would make it possible to create a new kind of government without a king. In the democracy envisioned by the country s earliest leaders, Americans would govern themselves based on certain principles or ideals. Few people at the time thought that the American Revolutionwould succeed and the Americans could win a war against the world s greatest empire. At the beginning of the war, there was no regular American army, just a militia made up of civilians and most of them were farmers. Naturally, they were not used to long campaigns or battles with British Regulars, and thousands quit. General Washington begged the Continental Congress to provide a regular army of men enlisted for a long term, but Congress felt that step would violate civil liberties. It was only after so many American defeats threatened the war effort that Congress agreed to offer extra pay to officers and privates and pledged to see the war to an end. Three significant foundational themes of this theory are, self efficacy, outcome expectations, and goals (Brown, 2016). Self efficacy is an individual s personal beliefs about their ability to perform specific behaviors or tasks. Outcome expectations refer to beliefs related to the valued outcomes or consequences produced from executing behaviors. Goals are defined as the decision making process to engage in a task or activity. How these variables interact with other aspects of the persons environment, (gender, race, outcome hopes, personal goals, and genetically determined characteristics), help in the career and academic decision making process. It is also believed that individuals efficacy development is influenced and altered when interacting with theses environments (Brown, 2016). In short, individuals will mainly be interested in activities seen as possible and achievable, and where they will experience positive results. Incorporation of Natural Capital into Mainstream Policies Executive Summary This paper objectively advocates a paradigm shift that incorporates natural capital into mainstream policies, and businesses practices, at all levels. It sheds light on the role and importance of valuing natural capital; reasons why it has not been properly integrated into everyday decision making process; the risks associated with negligence; and the benefits of integration. A few examples were enlisted to help outline the opportunities that lie within the ecosystem, if only we can implement practices to utilize it sustainably. Individuals, corporations, and governments, must understand and account for their use of natural capital and be aware of the accurate cost of human and economic security. 1.0 Introduction Virgil (October 15, 70 BC September 21, 19 BC), a classical Roman poet once quoted the greatest wealth is health . In the quest for wealth, human beings degrade their health through actions such as sleep deprivation and stress from prolonged work just to make so much wealth which we ultimately spend on replenishing health. Depending on the level of damage done, we might not be able to sustain good health and die. The above statement, even though blinkered, is an opening for our broader focus of natural capital, which in spite of its utmost importance, is not appropriately implemented in modern day decision making process. Natural capital refers to environmental health and its primary function is life support. As human economic activities

  • 40. How To Build An Arch In Roman Architecture During the Roman era, architecture and building styles took many leaps forward. This was partly due to the development of two key technologies: the arch and concrete. These technologies, and others, gave the Romans new capabilities in both domestic and public architecture, as well as the creation of infrastructure. In their furthering the development of the arch, the Romans took inspiration from the architectural achievements of their Greek neighbors (wikipedia). The arch was often used in the construction of grand monuments, as a centerpiece of it s own. These massive structures were constructed as a celebration by leaders, often to celebrate victory in battle. Bas relief, featuring scenes of religion, warfare, and ancestors, were carved into the arches. Discussing the same period, Jeremy Rifkin in the chapter A Postmodern Stage showed a more positive perspective about the change. To support his argument, Gergen elaborates damages in the community and institution that nurtured independent self, the direct erosion to solitary self. In the pre modern world, people due to the lack of communication and transportation tools, have fewer opportunities to get in touch with various people outside. Therefore, people form consistent relationships with others, which derive a strong sense of being somebody everyone is familiar with. However, the advances in communication enable people to move household often and be in contact with a wider range of friends leading to average weakening bonds with more and fast changing friends. As a result of the decrease in deep relationships, in Gergen s notion, people receive less sense of identification. Moreover, the multi voices raised today and the suspicions over speakers motivations confuse people from faith to distrust. Realism, liberalism, and social constructivism are only a handful of lenses through which we view global affairs. Realism suggests that anarchy causes states to fight for survival and the balance of power. Liberalismsuggests that while states do fight to survive, anarchy creates an environment conducive to cooperation. On the other hand, constructivism suggests that people constructed this system of international relationsand anarchy is what states make of it. Although each theory is different, they still seek to explain both history and the contemporary world. The realist approach to anarchy treats it as the main mode of the international system. Realist theory states that because the international system is anarchic, survival acts as a state s primary interest. Without a higher authority to regulate the actions of states, much like a government regulates the actions of its citizens; states are free to do whatever they please. Realism suggests that given this amount of power, along with the primal and violent nature of humans, states must constantly fight to survive. The self interest of the state comes before anything else, so conflict is always possible. States only gain relative to other states because there can be no absolute winnings for all states; a zero sum approach to power. Also, in the anarchic system states strive to put

A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time based. Once SMART goals are in place use calendars to get organized. Keep a monthly calendar somewhere it can easily be seen to write down goals or deadlines. A whiteboard is one suggestion for a monthly calendar. Colors or symbols can be used on the calendars to quickly show what is urgent and what can be delegated. Use a weekly calendar and schedule class, study, work, and social time.
