The Differences Of The Los Angeles Riots
African Americans in Los Angeles and throughout the United States have experienced racial
oppression for centuries. (Background about racial oppression by the LAPD). Rodney King was
an African American motorist who inspired positive police reforms after he had a brutal conflict
and was beaten by four members of the LAPD. Rodney Kings encounter resulted in a social and
legal compromise because the incident made people aware of police brutality, gave African
Americans a voice against policeabuse, and resulted in reforms to the way that the LAPD responds
to communities of color.
The Los Angeles Riots were the second riots to happen after the Watts Riots. The L.A Riots took
place on April 9, 1992. The riots broke out in less than a day and lasted five days and killed more
than 50 people and left more than 2,000 injured. On April 30, 1992, writers Richard A. Serrano
and Tracy Wilkinson wrote an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper saying hours after the
verdicts were announced, angry demonstrators torched buildings, looted stores and assaulted
passersby as civic leaders pleaded for calm. The riots started after the verdict was given, people
were filled with anger after they police officers were acquitted of all charges against them. Tensions
also arose with Korean store owners.
The riots helped bring a change to the community for the African Americans because before the
riots they didn t have a voice, any protest or march they did didn t receive attention. When the

Understanding Bronfenbrenner s Social Ecology Model of...
Abstract A number of important sociological and psychological models track the individual
across the lifespan, exploring how different aspects of life ebb and flow in importance as an
individual grows older. Other models focus on how an individual interacts with the microcosm
of their daily lives and how this in turn affects their interaction with all of the broader cycles of
their life. This paper explores the process of grieving and healing experience by a 56 year old
woman who has just lost her husband of 30 years through the lens of Bronfenbrenner s social
ecology model. This model allows for a multi dimensional analysis of change across both time
and psychosocial space. Healing after Loss Most women will outlive their husbands or male
partners. This fact arises from actuarial mathematics: Women tend to live longer than men. The
actuarial facts are exaggerated by the fact that women tend to marry (or partner with) men who
are older than they are, a trend that reflects cultural mores and economic dictates. Thus the
profile of grief described below must be acknowledged as a common one, a fact that itself is
relevant to the experience. Women know that they are likely to face a certain number of years
(even, perhaps, decades) and this foreknowledge helps mitigate the pain of the experience,
although of course it does not allow one to avoid the grief. Losses that we do not expect or that
run counter to our sense of how the world should work can be the hardest to

The Role Of Genius In Plato s Ion
The role and knowledge of the artist has been part of the philosophical discourse on art for a very
long time. There have been several philosophers who have contributed to the discussion. Plato, in
his piece Ion, provides an explanation of knowledge (technique) and inspiration, and how they
affect an artist. Platodoes this through the dialogue of Socrates and the rhapsode Ion, whom is an
expert in the poems of Homer. Although written long ago, when art wasn t as developed/diverse
as it has come to be, the basic concept of knowledge versus inspiration is one that paved the road
for future philosophers to further the discussion of the knowledge and role of the artist. From
the beginning of the dialogue, it is inferred that Ion is a great rhapsode because he won first
place in a contest. However, Ion admits early on that his skill as a rhapsode only apply to when
he is reciting the poems of Homer and not others . Socrates responds to Ion: No one can fail to
see that you speak of Homer without any art of knowledge. If you were able to speak of him by
rules of art, you would have been able to speak of all other poets; for poetry is a whole. (Ion,
Plato) This is the beginning of Plato establishing technique when a man has acquired a knowledge
of a whole art, the enquiry into good and bad is one and the same. (Ion,Plato) It is clear through this
dialogue that Socrates doesn t see Ion as having knowledge/technique due to his inability to
understand and perform anything other

Argument On Santa Clauses
Santa Claus was well known as a kind man who had a long white bread, wore big red white
clothes and carried children s gifts with his flying reindeers as a vehicle. Christians all around
the world have had Santa traditions since the 1820 s, which is lying children to believe in Santa,
hang a sock on the window, behave nicely and go to bed early so that Santa can come and give
them presents (Sleepypanda 2013). Until December 2016, psychologists claimed that Santa myth
could destroy children s trust to parents. All children will eventually find out they ve been
consistently lied to for years, and this might make them wonder what other lies they ve been told,
(Boyle McKay 2016)
Based on my experience, when I was in elementary school, I remember the time that my English
teacher asked us to write postcard, she said that she would send the most beautiful postcard in the
class to Santa Clause, so we put high effort to create an outstanding postcard. They also asked us to
behave nicely for all day because Santa would come to the room and gave good children a present.
In that time, the reason I believed what they lied because I thought that teacher always teach student
the true and right thing, so they must tell us the truth as well. But, as time goes ... Show more

harmfulness to children. Moreover, Dr. Matthew Lober, a child psychiatrist at Lenox Hill

where they have to fulfill. Ritz Carlton has a higher degree of job specialisation as each

As a result, Ritz Carlton has a wider span of control where one manager is in charge of greater
number of employees. Whereas Fraser Residence will have a narrow span of control as they have a
smaller team with lesser departments. Too wide of a span of control can decrease the effectiveness
of managers as they spend more time managing their subordinates instead of performing other
important duties. For example referring to the organisation chart in appendix I, the front office
manager in Ritz Carlton has 3 sub department managers that reports to him/her (Security manager,
reservation manager and chief concierge). On the other hand, the front office manager in Fraser
Residence has only 1 sub department manager that reports to him/ her (Reservation supervisor).

Transportation of the Civil War Before the Civil War there were things that the North and the South
needed to use to move things around the place. There are two things that were most important. The
train that was the most important was the R.R locomotive and the man that made that was Richard
Trevithick. They moved the steal and other things on the rail and the R.R was used in the North
more than the South. They also used boats. Since they did not have steam boats, they used row
boats. The guy that made the steam boats was John Fitch. They used the steam boats to carry cotton

It s A 3-D Language Summary
In When It Comes To Learning For The Deaf, It s A 3 D Language (NPR, June 28, 2015), Emma
Bowman says that leaders in the deaf community are trying to create learning tools for American
Sign Language. She begins the article by introducing Melissa Malzkuhn, a director of the Motion
Light Lab at Gallaudet University. She says that in English, there are many nursery rhymes, but
there are not many in ASL (American Sign Language). She also states that she is going to develop
nursery rhymes in ASL. The reason why there are not many nursery rhymes in ASL is that English
is mostly sound based language, so it is difficult to directly translate to motion based ASL. The
project is launched in 2009. By using high tech such as Motion Light Lab or ML2,

Narrative Essay On National History Day Washington Dc
The hardest thing I ve ever done was National History Day last year. This was difficult because I
procrastinated so much and was never assigned any projects like it before. I was able to get
through it however, and then I had to work with a group and we chose group performance and it
got easier from there. Here is the story of how I went to Washington DC because of NHD.
So when we were first assigned with NHD nobody wanted to do it in our class. After the teacher

to do it so much that when we were supposed to be working I didn t work because all I could think
was this is way too boring. Even when we were assigned homework, I wouldn t do that.
As each deadline passed for sources and rough drafts, I didn t have anything to turn in. Also as
each deadline passed I got more and more nervous knowing that I d get a horrible grade in the

Soliloquy Of The Spanish Cloister Essay
McKenzie Cramer
Dr. Eller
English 2002
13 October 2014
The Hypocritical Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister
In the dramatic monologue Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister by Robert Browning, the reader is
hurled into the psychotic ranting s of an unnamed friar. The protagonist of this poem is voicing
his hatred for his fellow monk, Brother Lawrence, as he absentmindedly works in the monastery s
garden. The tone of the poem is filled with disgust, hate, and bitterness, as the friar plays previous
encounters with Brother Lawrence over in his head, mocking his speech as well as his actions.
Although the only description that the reader receives about Brother Lawrence comes from the
ranting s of the friar, he actually does not seem all that terrible. The figures of speech that
Browning uses throughout the poem show the irony of the friar s way of thinking. Since the friar
is unaware of his psychotic thought process, he is unable to realize that the faults he associates with
Brother Lawrence are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The friar contemplates several ways to ensure that Brother Lawrence will receive eternal
damnation. His thoughts first wander to brown Dolores, whom is a seemingly beautiful woman;
hence the description the friar gives in the poem. In line thirty, the friar says that he can see his
dead eye glow. Although he imagines that Brother Lawrence will react to brown Dolores s beauty
in a lustful manner, it seems as though the speaker himself is the one who instead reacts this way.
Another example that shows the friar s hypocrisy, is when he plans to have Brother Lawrence
simply glace at his dirty French novel. The speaker believes that when he does, Brother Lawrence
will find himself hand and foot in Belial s gripe (60). If these methods will not work, the friar
knows twenty nine distinct damnations, one sure if another fails that will impact his eternal salvation

Comparing Poems Power Plant-Bops And The Seedling
The story s last paragraph and the poem s last stanza contribute to the development of each text s
theme because they sum up the idea of good fruit of the spirit and perfectness. For example, in
the last stanza, The Seedling tells how both sun and showers help you through hard times, much
like how people of good fruit and people of bad fruit influence and help a situation. It also say in
lines 31 and 32 you will rise to light and beauty. Virtue s fair, unfading flowers. Similar to how
when you rise to Heaven you rise to beauty and Heaven is one place flowers go unfaded. The last

In Power Plant Bots , the last paragraph contributes to the stories theme by going in depth about
the three types of Plant Bots, all while telling a life lesson. In The Seedling the last stanza had a
more hidden theme rather than out in the open. The story told how a seedling was in a dark
place, but was determined to do the best it could. Soon later it lifted a leaflet out of its darkness
and ito the light, but the last stanza says that the sun and showers will help you through
lonesome and struggling hours, till you raise to light abd beauty, virtue s fair unfading beauty. I
soon realized the story was refering to someone in a dark place in their life, but decided to not
let that stop them from doing their best. This person soon brought another person (leaflet) out of
their dark place and the leaflet called others, and the others heard and wanted to follow and so
the seedling showed them the way. To me, showed them the way were words that stuck out to
me, and I read it as they took them to a good place (church) away from the dark place and let
them see the light (God). I think the sun and showers refer to good fruit of the spirit(sun) and bad
fruit of the spirit as well (showers). Although I see the themes very similar, the way the theme was
presented in the last paragraph/stanza made me have a different perspective that made me reread the

Their Eyes Were Watching Janie Analysis
The Impact of the Society and Class theme on Janie In accordance with the turbulent time period it
was written in, Their Eyes Were Watching God comments on many issues within the society of the
1930 s through various themes such as love, nature, and societal standards. However, the theme of
societal standards and expectations is perhaps the most prominent in the story, furthering the main
character Janie s development the most. In the book, despite the standards and rules imposed on her
by society, Janie learns to overcome them, thereby attaining happiness and an emotionally rich life.
As a mixed womanin the southern United States, Janie had always had rules and others
expectations thrust upon her, under the guise of either love or judgement. For example, although
Nanny intended for Janie to find security and eventual happiness through an arranged marriage
as a result of her own tragic life experiences, this backfired, as Janie was only acquired those at
forty, after two failed marriages. Her late second husband Joe Starks imposed societal rules on her,
often expressing how women should stay in the background of matters. After accepting his position
as mayor of Eatonville, Joe quickly took away Janie s attempt at making her own comments on the
matter by saying [t]hank yuh fuh yo compliments, but mah wife don t know nothin bout no speech
makin . Ah never married her for nothin lak dat. She s uh woman and her place is in de home.

An Essential Cellular Communication Process Of...
IIntracellular trafficking is an essential cellular communication process in which membrane vesicles
carrying lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are taken up and transported through endosomes to
lysosomes (termed endocytosis) and vesicles carrying macromolecules are delivered to the plasma
membrane and outside of the cell(exocytosis) [1]. Uptake of external particles through endocytosis
is required for prolific growth and differentiation. For example, uptake of transferrin provides iron
necessary for growth and parasitism of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum [2]. In contrast, the
synaptic release of neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin exemplifies exocytosis. In

Pan1 homologs were identified from Candida species and Magnaporthe oryzae (Mo), but not Cn,
indicating that Pan1 mediated endocytic trafficking is not universal among fungi ([13], ZG Zhang

Cn is an encapsulated basidiomycetous fungus that infects both immunocompromised and healthy
individuals to cause life threatening meningoencephalitis [14]. Cn produces virulence factors
including melanin, the polysaccharide capsule, and extracellular ureases and phospholipases [15
17]. Previous studies showed that secretory transport is important for virulence [18] and that Cn
has proteins with conserved specific functions in exocytosis, such as Sav1, Sec6, and Sec14 [19
21]. Previously, we identified cryptococcal intersectin 1 (Cin1) as a novel endocytic adaptor protein
that is important not only in intracellular transport but also in growth and virulence [22]. Cin1
contains multiple domains including one EH domain, one CC region, an actin monomer binding
WH2 domain, two SH3 motifs, and a RhoGEF PH domain. Also, the Cin1 domain structure shares
more similarity with mammalian ITSN1 than Sc Pan1 (Fig. 1). Further studies suggested that Cin1

Characteristics Of Organized Crime
In the early 20th century, millions of Italians came to the United States as poor immigrants. Many
of these immigrants found their new home in New York City, New York. Thus began the
formation of the renowned New York Mafia. Defining characteristics of the New York Mafia give
insight into the formation, intention, and conservation thereof. A couple of sociological theories
can be used to describe the propagation of one of America s most renowned organized crime

Richard Scott describes this structure as Natural System , where members share a common
interest in the survival of the system but are not necessarily guided by the organization s goals.
The organized crime unit is more than an instrument for attaining defined goals; it is
fundamentally a social group attempting to adapt and survive in a dangerous environment
(Abadinsky 2016:46). Each member of the Mafia, called a Made Guy , is independent in that he
does not receive a salary from the group. Basically, each member is a franchise manager, who
engages in criminal activity with the support and protection of the Mafia.
When the Italians came to the United States in the late 1900 s, the economy was molded by the
likes of the Rockefellers, the Astors, and the Vanderbilts. This economical formation created
limited opportunities for the middle and, especially, the lower classes. The socioeconomic
disadvantage established upon the Italian immigrants leads many to seek success via illegal
means. This criminal behavior was exacerbated by the [reproduction of] the kind of illegal
groups they had belonged to in the old country (Abadinsky 2016:43). The New York Mafia s
formation was likely twofold: illegal behavior was vital to any semblance of financial success for
the Italian immigrants, and the immigrants were replicating the same kind of criminal groups that
they were familiar with back in Italy. The former can be tied to the Strain Theory. There is

Step 4 (Wrist Twist) was scored as a +1 because minimal twisting action were required. For step 5,
the precious scores were plotted in Table A of the RULA guide which resulted in an overall score
of 4. Step 6 and step 7 both resulted in a +1 score due to the repetitiveness of the process and the
weight of the objects handled by the employee. Step 8 consisted of adding the values of steps 5 7
(4+1+1 respectively) to indicate an overall wrist/arm score of 6. Step 9 (Neck Position) resulted in a
+2 because the employee s neck primarily stayed within the 0 20 degree range. Step 10 (Trunk

resulted in a +1 because the employee s legs were stable and supported. Using Table B (Trunk
Posture Score) resulted in a score of 4 for step 12. Steps 13 and 14 both resulted in a +1 score

Being An Idiot
Serena muttered a few inaudible words before nodding Okay, if you want Holby to lose its best
Consultant, then so be it, as she stood up to leave Ric grasped her hand only for her to pull away
and glare. This act of heroism had annoyed her greatly that she almost felt he should take the wrap
for being an idiot; the other part of her was beyond angry that arguing would have seemed
pointless. Furthermore, she felt it was something they would have to discuss in private and when
they did row, they both could go to town and really rock the boat.
With Serena out of sight, Ric took a seat, he hoped in doing this, things would not be so severe
for him; he hoped the old boys network would kick in and save him. He also knew he would be
given a lessened death sentence and run of embarrassment than Serena would have faced.
Clasping his hands together, Ric sighed. My personal relationship with Serena aside, I cannot let
her take the blame for an incident that she sought little part in. Her role today has been nothing but

Flannery O Connor s Short Fiction Essay examples
Flannery O Connor s Greenleaf, Everything that Rises Must Converge, and A Good Man is Hard to
Find
Introduction
To the uninitiated, the writing of Flannery O Connor can seem at once cold and dispassionate, as
well as almost absurdly stark and violent. Her short stories routinely end in horrendous, freak
fatalities or, at the very least, a character s emotional devastation. Working his way through
Greenleaf, Everything that Rises Must Converge, or A Good Man is Hard to Find, the new reader
feels an existential hollowness reminiscent of Camus The Stranger; O Connor s imagination
appears a barren, godless plane of meaninglessness, punctuated by pockets of random, mindless
cruelty.
In reality, her writing is filled with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Young Flannery attended St. Vincent s Grammar School and Sacred Heart Parochial School. In
1938 her father got a position as appraiser for the Federal Housing Administration, and the family
moved to North East Atlanta, then Milledgeville, where, three years later, Ed died from
complications arising from the chronic autoimmune disease lupus. Flannery attended Georgia State
College for Women (now Georgia College) and State University of Iowa, receiving her MFA from
the latter in 1947. In 1951, after complaining of a heaviness in her typing arms, she was diagnosed
with the same lupus that had killed her father. She went on, despite the disease, to write two novels
and thirty two short stories, winning awards and acclaim, going on speaking tours when her health
permitted, but spending most of her time on the family farm, Andalusia, in Milledgeville, with her
mother. She died of lupus on August third, 1964 at the age of thirty nine.
Flannery O Connor remained a devout Catholic throughout, and this fact, coupled with the constant
awareness of her own impending death, both filtered through an acute literary sensibility, gives us
valuable insight into just what went into those thirty two short stories and the two novels: cathartic
bitterness, a belief in grace as something devastating to the recipient, a gelid concept of salvation,
and violence as a force for good. At first it might seem that these aspects of her writing would
detract from,

Analysis Of Of Mice And Men And Death Of A Salesman
Julia Savu
Coursework question:
How does the writer Of Mice And Men and Death Of A Salesman present the theme of
hopelessness and failure of the American Dream? American Dream: Every women and men should
have the opportunity to achieve their goals and their dreams, no matter of their social class or their
ability.
Hopelessness: Having dreams/goals but knowing there s a small chance of them being
accomplished in future.
The writers of the books Of Mice And Men and Death Of A Salesmanhave a certain use of words
/phrases that demonstrate a clear use of the themes hopelessness and failure of the American Dream
.
To begin with, John Steinbeck has used the following quote: I could live so easy have a girl
maybe . This quote presents how one of the main characters George is feeling hopeless about his
dreams as he knows that taking care of Lennie would mean his dreams will be hard to achieve as
it is a big responsibility to be with Lennie due to his mental difficulties. Furthermore, the writer
has used the phrase: I could live so easy if I didn t have you on my tail gives us a clear
suggestion that George is directly telling Lennie how easy his life would be without him. John
Steinbeck is also directly telling us how George and Lennie present the theme of hopelessness in
the book by showing how Lennie has to be taken care of by George and how Lennie is and extra
advantage for George because of his strong physical ability.

The Police Powers of Search, Arrest, and Interrogation Essay
The Powers of Police
Individuals have civil rights; people are entitled to be allowed to move freely and to have their
person and their property respected. However the police must have sufficient powers to investigate
crimes. Therefore Parliament has given the police special powers that can be used in certain
circumstances. These powers include the rights to stop and search suspects, to arrest and interview
people when necessary and to take fingerprints and samples (blood samples) for scientific analysis.
Without the police having these certain powers then it would be nearly impossible to investigate
any crimes. But it is also important for the police to remember that, at the same time, they ... Show

To use this power under PACE the police officer must have reasonable grounds for suspecting that
the person is in possession of or the vehicle contains stolen goods or prohibited articles, such as
items of offensive weapons, and articles for use in connection with burglary or theft.
As these powers are very wide there are safeguards in that the police officer must give his name
and station and the reason for the search. If he or she fails to give reason for the search, then the
search is unlawful. This was shown in the case of Osman v DPP 1999, where the officers did not
give their names and station. The Queens Bench Divisional Court held that this made a search of
Mr. Osman unlawful and so he could not be guilty of assaulting the police in the execution of their
duty.
If the search is in public, the police can only request that the suspect removes his or her outer coat,
jacket and gloves.
The code of practice A contains details and guidance on when these powers should be used. In
particular it stresses that police officers must not act just because of a person s characteristics.
Paragraph 1.7 of code A says:
Reasonable suspicion can never be supported on the basis of personal factors alone. For example,
a person s colour, age, hairstyle or manner

Reflective Essay On The Writing Process
The writing process of pre writing, drafting, revising and publishing has helped me to become
proficient in my writing. After applying the writing process method, I can break down my writing
into manageable chunks and focus on delivering quality material. I believe that my writing
dramatically depends on my attitude, motivation and engagement as I have gathered that the writing
process takes these components into account by allowing me to plan my writing and create a
publishable, final draftof my work of which I can be satisfied. It addresses my need for a real
audience and to take the time to draft and redraft my work.
I have learned many things about the writing process. I ve learned how to recognise my mistakes
by revising texts and that sharing with other writers is rewarding and offers challenges. I ve
identified the high level of experienced and the quality writings achieved when following each
method, the simplicity of this process and that it takes time and patience to build a well structured
text. I have also learned that it is okay to make errors in a first draft and as beginner writers, these
errors teach us a lot as learners, and it improves our overall future writing abilities. To put it simply,
although I have the tools for creating well regulated writing content, I acknowledge that it will take
considerable practice before each writing method is approached positively and confidently in my
ability to produce writings with exceptional strength and achievement.
These learning attributes have been represented in my creative writing many times. Learning about
how simple the writing process makes for excellent writing allowed me to structure my response
without notable difficulty or confusion. It involved taking steps to brainstorm my ideas and
organising key points for the relevant subject addressed within my response. It also allowed me
to showcase ideas by the expansion of my writing efficiently. When I learned how sharing my
work with others can improve my writing by their use of proving me with quality feedback, I was
able to adjust my work according to my peers and tutors own critical review of my detailed
response. Following the editing of my response, I became aware of how many errors

The Gray Zone by Primo Levi Essay
The Gray Zone by Primo Levi In the chapter, the gray zone, the author Primo Levi describes the
human relationships inside the Lager. In describing the gray zone, Levi discusses the different
roles of prisoners assigned by the Nazi. The prisoners that did the work were seen as being more
privileged which at the end of the day helped them get more food and live better. Therefore, the
concept of the gray zone is analyzing the difference between the privileged and the non privileged
in the Lager. The difference can be seen by the tasks that the prisoners carried out, for example, one

Terrence Des Pres, The Survivor Summary The Survivor by Terrence Des Pres discusses how
prisoners survived in poor living conditions in the Warsaw Ghetto. He defines a survivor as,
...any man or women striving to keep life and spirit intact not only those who returned, but the
hundreds of thousands who stayed alive sometimes for years, only to die at the last minute. He
describes the experience in the Ghetto where it was possible to survive with the collective
efforts of others, which is the opposite of how Primo Levi described it. Survivors experienced
help from each other such as gifts of food from friends and family. People were willing to give
up their valuables for the better of others. With these little gestures people felt better and more
rich about their experience which helped lighten the mood in the Ghetto. However, thousands
still died every day at Treblinka, a concentration camp in Poland. At the peak of operations,
15,000 men, women and children died there each day. Death on that scale took enormous labor,
and towards the end, when the SS began to fear discovery, the mass graves were opened and the
rotting bodies burned. The Sonderkommando, a group of prisoners, were responsible of disposing
bodies of other prisoners. The purpose of surviving till the end was to tell the horrific stories of the
Warsaw Ghetto. Such as the filthy living conditions. In Nazi camps especially,

Men are always defined to be men to the extent they are not women; men are masculine,
independent, tough, aggressive, powerful, commanding, in control, rational and non emotional. On
the other side, real women are defined to be the opposite of real men, they should be vulnerable,
supportive, emotional and empathic. Consequently, men use these patriarchal separations of roles
to enforce their masculinity over women, they start issuing laws and regulations that can benefit
them and their supremacy, and at the same time would downgrade women and increase their
inferiority. In this same way, patriarchy has generated colonization that upon dividing humans
into different genders, different races, different classes and different nationality, colonization
gained its power from this division. We all know deep inside that patriarchy is a threat to all
humans and even if we are now privileged in our society for being men, we are still inferior to
other men of another race, color and class. I believe that for us to fight patriarchy we have to
choose different tools than those offered by the current system, I see that reforming patriarchy can t
be done with patriarchal tools because they will never generate anything but patriarchy. I see

Thomas Mofolo’s novel Chaka Essay
According to the English author and philosopher, Edmund Burke, The greater the power, the
more dangerous the abuse. (Burke) This often proves to be true in Thomas Mofolo s novel
Chaka. Power is a corruptive concept. If you do not have a genuinely selfless heart, you will
become corrupted by your own power, which often happened to those of power in this novel.
However, even though power is often seen as having influence over others, power can also be
distinctly self centered. Power can be expressed through controlling others, but it can also be
expressed by disabling others from controlling you. Powerlessness occurs when you lose the
determination to stop others from controlling you. Now, power is something that everyone can

However, while the powerful are portrayed as relatable, they are also portrayed as generally
unforgiving and often unmerciful characters, who usually place the value of power over the
value of humanity and relationships. Senzangakhona, the first king in this novel, wanted for his
companion s son, Dingiswayo, to be dead simply because he knew that he would serve as a
threat to the throne. He also decided to banish his son, Chaka, and his wife, Nandi, because he
knew that keeping them here would bring shame to them as well as himself, and would
endanger his kingship. However, he did face internal struggles when making the decision to do
this, which made him more humanistic. For example, On page 11, the author states that The
pain which Senzangakhona felt in his heart when he had to part with Chaka, his child, and
Nandi, his wife, was such that we are unable to describe it, for he loved them greatly. (Mofolo,
p.11) The battle between what is expected of you (in his case, to be king) and what your heart
yearns for (in his case, to be with his child and wife) is something that most people can relate to,
making him more personable. Chaka was portrayed as the most ruthless of all the kings,
murdering countless Zulus, as well as his own mother, wife, and child. In the beginning of the
novel, however, he was easy to relate to. As a young boy, he was rejected by his father, forced to

Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
Executive Summary
CIA Central Intelligence Agency
Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is centered on the same basic principles as the Office
of Strategic Services (OSS) in the 1940 s but with some significant changes, specifically in its
organization and methods. The OSS, the world s first global intelligence organization, was
organized and overseen by Wild Bill Donovan and expanded at an unprecedented pace throughout
World War II. The OSS was the foundation for today s CIA. It was because of the successes and
failures of the OSS that the CIA has been able to grow and develop.
As is made clear by the detailed descriptions of Bill Donovan s routine and procedures in the
biography Wild Bill Donovan by Douglas Waller, the leadership and management of the CIA today
is drastically different from the original OSS. Donovan was appointed by FDR, in the same way
the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency is today. Yet Donovan s duties were extremely vague
and up to interpretation, including performing unspecified supplementary activities for the
president. While the overall mission of the CIA today is open ended which means it needs only the

Analysis Of John Donne s Holy Sonnet Xiv
In Holy Sonnet XIV, John Donne directly addresses God using a desperate and forceful tone. The
formal structure of Donne s holy sonnet follows the basic Petrarchan sonnet form. The sonnet has
fourteen lines divided into an octave and a sestet. The rhyme scheme of the octave is abba abba.
The sestet has the rhyme scheme cdcdee. Donne expresses his spiritual turmoil and longing by
using this structure to present different metaphors that illustrate his condition, and he uses
Petrarchan conventions to further highlight his spiritual desires. The octave introduces and
illustrates the spiritual difficulty that Donne finds himself in trapped in, and wants Godto take him
out of. The first line starts with Donne s desperate and urgent command to God to batter or
violently beat his heart (1). Donne uses the metaphor of his heart as a metal object, and God as a
metal smith to support this command. Donne s heart is a broken object that the metal smith has
gently stroked, breathed on to shine, and polished, in order to fix the broken parts. However,
Donne claims that this is not enough. The metal smith needs to break, blow, burn in order to
make the object new (4). The metal smith must apply more force to shatter the object, and then
place it into the fire to melt, so the metal can be purified and new. Donne seems to be telling God

Satire in “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde...
A satire is a piece of work that is designed to ridicule or tease a group or organization, generally
for the purpose of being humorous. The Importance of Being Earnest, a play by Oscar Wilde, is
a satire, ridiculing class, gender, and marriage. This essay will describe some points from each
of these sections, as well as give a brief synopsis of the play these examples come from. The
Importance of being Earnest includes three acts, with seven major characters. In act one, we start
with a conversation between Jack (a notable bachelor) and Algernon (an in debt bachelor, with a
laid back temperament), in which we learn both have made up friends, who are often sick, as to
escape from wherever they live whenever they want. We also learn... Show more content on

Gwendolyn and Cecily act as friends until they learn that they are supposedly engaged to the same
person. Then they learn neither of them are engaged to anybody named Ernest, and are friends
again. In act three, we discover Jacks history, including that he is Algernon s elder brother. In the
end, despite several lies, arguments, and much turmoil, everybody gets married. There are many
examples of satire referring to class. One of the first is the fact that the side of the street you live
on affects how fashionable you are. This is an example of satire because it is not true, and is
ridiculing high class people by pointing out how shallow that they can be. Another example is
the statement that sugar is a low class food item. This is a satire for the same reason as the first
example. A third example of class related satire is that high class people always talk about other
peoples business. This ridicules high class people for being churlish and not allowing for other
peoples privacy. In all, Earnest points out how snobbish and shallow Mr. Wilde thought high
class people are. There are also many examples of gender based satire. The first of these is that
only men can have a Bunburry. This is not true and shows that men think themselves more
sophisticated than women. A second example of this type of satire is that women marry for a
name. This is a satire because it ridicules women for being shallow. A final example of gender
related satire is that women are

The Duty Of Journalists And The Public Interest
The duty of journalists is to tell the truth. Journalism means you go back to the actual facts, you
look at the documents, you discover what the record is, and you report it that way. Chomsky 2008
Working within the media industry, especially as a journalist. It can sometimes be difficult and
challenging as you are more than often finding yourself having to raid people s personal lives to
get a story. However, Is it in the public interest? that is the one question any journalist must ask
themselves if they are to publish a story that may contain an individual s private information.
Problems take place within the media when public interest is conflicted with human right and the
right to privacy. You can easily validate publishing privet information as a form of public interest,
but you however cannot justify the damages it may cause.
This is where the media tend to clash with people. Some journalist may argue and say that when
publishing privet information it is in the public interest but they must prove that. This is in
reference section4 which states, The defendant reasonably believed that publishing the statement
complained of was in the public interest. This is under the public interest defence, which was
created under the defamation act 2013. The law was set up to allow journalists the right to free
speech in reference to Article 10 stating Everyone has the right to freedom of expression.
Not respecting people s privacy is one of the most complained about

African Americans In Prison
There have been 100,000 African Americans in prison since Brown vs Board of education. The
article states that the trend will continue, 1 of every 3 African American males are apparently
born today can expect to go to prison in their time, 1 in 6 Latino males, compared to 1 in every
17 White males. But for women, it is much lower, but the ethnicity does not change: 1 out of 18
African Americans, 1 out of 45 Hispanics, and finally 1 of every 111 White females, are expected
to serve some time in prison. At any given day, 1 in every 13 African American
males between 30 to
39 will incarcerated in a state or federal prison on any given day. This compares to the
demographics of the group because in communities of color they are not affected only by
incarceration but by high... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prison wardens are not able to continue. There are three ways that the article wants to alleviate
racial biases. They are 1) leveling the playing field. This provides sentencing options for the courts
with a greater number of defendants court be sentenced in the community. This is then avoiding
incarceration while permitting offenders. 2) Invest in high school completion. There has been
studies that 68% of dropout students, end up in jail. If there is high school completion this will help
increase the off set of rate of improvement. 3) Adopt racial statement legislation. THis is
environmental impact and racial impact that requires police to consider any racial effects of
sentencing.
The racial disparities article also shares that even though the article focuses on adults, juvenile
justice cases often have extreme racial/ethnic disparities as well. Apparently, the raceand ethnic
disparities are often more noticeable in the beginning of Juvenile justice system. From other cases,
cases have accumulated and have noticed a high rate in African American

Analysis Of Louis Pasteur s Invention Of Pasteurization
Abstract
Wine has been consumed for a particularly long time, probably as early as around 6000 BC (
Evidence of ancient wine, 2015). Many people drink wine because of its health benefits such as
lowering the risk of heart diseases and type 2 diabetes, or simply because it tastes good (Quinlan,
n.d.). But several people do not know that wine can spoil and turn sour, which was a great concern
for the wine industry back in the 1900s. This problem led to Louis Pasteur s invention of
pasteurization. It does not only prevent the wine from spoiling, but also prevents many food borne
illness, such as tuberculosis. The history of pasteurization, its impacts on public health, and its
controversy will be discussed in this paper to answer the question, Should pasteurization be
continued?
Pasteurization: Should It Be Continued?
Louis Pasteur Louis Pasteur was born on December 27th, 1822 in Dole, France. He got a
Bachelor of Science degree in 1842 at the Royal College in Besancon. He then attended the
Ecole Normale in Paris in 1843, and got his Master of Science degree in 1845 (Lamont, 1991). In
1854, he went to the University of the Lille and became the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences there
( Louis Pasteur, 2016). Figure 2: Louis Pasteur. Source: Google Images

France and in 1856, a father of his student, M. Bigo, went to talk to him about the problem that

Leopold Von Ranke
Leopold von Ranke lays down a series of critiques against the philosophy of history. He outlines
several flaws in the methodology that he believes prevent it from accurately recreating the historical
development of ideas, events, etc. To a large degree, Ranke himself avoids the most fundamental of
these flaws while himself attempting to relate the historyof European politics from Louis XIV
through the fall of Napoleon. However, due largely to the complexity and demandingness of the
historical discipline, Ranke s work is itself open to some of his own objections, preventing it from
truly gaining a perfect portrayal of the development of the great European powers.
The core objection that Ranke raises against the philosophy of history, ... Show more content on

The objective historian therefore must take care to consider a vast range of sources indeed, he
contends that the ideal history requires sovereignty over an infinite sum of sources in order to
properly understand historical developments.
While it is difficult to evaluate Ranke s use of sources owing to his lack of footnotes, he clearly
focuses on a narrow genre of sources: political and military developments. Literature is hardly
treated, and advances in economics, philosophy, and technology receive none whatsoever. Surely
Ranke s neglect of the Enlightenment and the rise of international trade limit the accuracy of his
understanding of the 18th century. Ranke s biases also prevent his history from attaining the ideal
of objective analysis to which he subscribes. This is most glaring in his inexcusable shortchanging
of Napoleon, the reaction to whom dominated European politics for a century. Ranke aims to show
men shaping European political history, yet he only allots a few sentences to Napoleon, entirely
ignoring how he accomplished his conquests. More importantly, his impact on law, economics, and
even the political organization of Ranke s own Germany, find zero space in Ranke s essay.
While Ranke scores philosophy of history for ignoring the power of the individual, his history often
falls short as well, especially when discussing countries in which he is not particularly interested.
Too often he slips into generalities about how England

  • 2. The Differences Of The Los Angeles Riots African Americans in Los Angeles and throughout the United States have experienced racial oppression for centuries. (Background about racial oppression by the LAPD). Rodney King was an African American motorist who inspired positive police reforms after he had a brutal conflict and was beaten by four members of the LAPD. Rodney Kings encounter resulted in a social and legal compromise because the incident made people aware of police brutality, gave African Americans a voice against policeabuse, and resulted in reforms to the way that the LAPD responds to communities of color. The Los Angeles Riots were the second riots to happen after the Watts Riots. The L.A Riots took place on April 9, 1992. The riots broke out in less than a day and lasted five days and killed more than 50 people and left more than 2,000 injured. On April 30, 1992, writers Richard A. Serrano and Tracy Wilkinson wrote an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper saying hours after the verdicts were announced, angry demonstrators torched buildings, looted stores and assaulted passersby as civic leaders pleaded for calm. The riots started after the verdict was given, people were filled with anger after they police officers were acquitted of all charges against them. Tensions also arose with Korean store owners. The riots helped bring a change to the community for the African Americans because before the riots they didn t have a voice, any protest or march they did didn t receive attention. When the ... • 3. Understanding Bronfenbrenner s Social Ecology Model of... Abstract A number of important sociological and psychological models track the individual across the lifespan, exploring how different aspects of life ebb and flow in importance as an individual grows older. Other models focus on how an individual interacts with the microcosm of their daily lives and how this in turn affects their interaction with all of the broader cycles of their life. This paper explores the process of grieving and healing experience by a 56 year old woman who has just lost her husband of 30 years through the lens of Bronfenbrenner s social ecology model. This model allows for a multi dimensional analysis of change across both time and psychosocial space. Healing after Loss Most women will outlive their husbands or male partners. This fact arises from actuarial mathematics: Women tend to live longer than men. The actuarial facts are exaggerated by the fact that women tend to marry (or partner with) men who are older than they are, a trend that reflects cultural mores and economic dictates. Thus the profile of grief described below must be acknowledged as a common one, a fact that itself is relevant to the experience. Women know that they are likely to face a certain number of years (even, perhaps, decades) and this foreknowledge helps mitigate the pain of the experience, although of course it does not allow one to avoid the grief. Losses that we do not expect or that run counter to our sense of how the world should work can be the hardest to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Role Of Genius In Plato s Ion The role and knowledge of the artist has been part of the philosophical discourse on art for a very long time. There have been several philosophers who have contributed to the discussion. Plato, in his piece Ion, provides an explanation of knowledge (technique) and inspiration, and how they affect an artist. Platodoes this through the dialogue of Socrates and the rhapsode Ion, whom is an expert in the poems of Homer. Although written long ago, when art wasn t as developed/diverse as it has come to be, the basic concept of knowledge versus inspiration is one that paved the road for future philosophers to further the discussion of the knowledge and role of the artist. From the beginning of the dialogue, it is inferred that Ion is a great rhapsode because he won first place in a contest. However, Ion admits early on that his skill as a rhapsode only apply to when he is reciting the poems of Homer and not others . Socrates responds to Ion: No one can fail to see that you speak of Homer without any art of knowledge. If you were able to speak of him by rules of art, you would have been able to speak of all other poets; for poetry is a whole. (Ion, Plato) This is the beginning of Plato establishing technique when a man has acquired a knowledge of a whole art, the enquiry into good and bad is one and the same. (Ion,Plato) It is clear through this dialogue that Socrates doesn t see Ion as having knowledge/technique due to his inability to understand and perform anything other ... • 13. Soliloquy Of The Spanish Cloister Essay McKenzie Cramer Dr. Eller English 2002 13 October 2014 The Hypocritical Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister In the dramatic monologue Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister by Robert Browning, the reader is hurled into the psychotic ranting s of an unnamed friar. The protagonist of this poem is voicing his hatred for his fellow monk, Brother Lawrence, as he absentmindedly works in the monastery s garden. The tone of the poem is filled with disgust, hate, and bitterness, as the friar plays previous encounters with Brother Lawrence over in his head, mocking his speech as well as his actions. Although the only description that the reader receives about Brother Lawrence comes from the ranting s of the friar, he actually does not seem all that terrible. Although he imagines that Brother Lawrence will react to brown Dolores s beauty in a lustful manner, it seems as though the speaker himself is the one who instead reacts this way. Another example that shows the friar s hypocrisy, is when he plans to have Brother Lawrence simply glace at his dirty French novel. Their Eyes Were Watching Janie Analysis The Impact of the Society and Class theme on Janie In accordance with the turbulent time period it was written in, Their Eyes Were Watching God comments on many issues within the society of the 1930 s through various themes such as love, nature, and societal standards. However, the theme of societal standards and expectations is perhaps the most prominent in the story, furthering the main character Janie s development the most. In the book, despite the standards and rules imposed on her by society, Janie learns to overcome them, thereby attaining happiness and an emotionally rich life. As a mixed womanin the southern United States, Janie had always had rules and others expectations thrust upon her, under the guise of either love or judgement. For example, although Nanny intended for Janie to find security and eventual happiness through an arranged marriage as a result of her own tragic life experiences, this backfired, as Janie was only acquired those at forty, after two failed marriages. Her late second husband Joe Starks imposed societal rules on her, often expressing how women should stay in the background of matters. IIntracellular trafficking is an essential cellular communication process in which membrane vesicles carrying lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are taken up and transported through endosomes to lysosomes (termed endocytosis) and vesicles carrying macromolecules are delivered to the plasma membrane and outside of the cell(exocytosis) [1]. Uptake of external particles through endocytosis is required for prolific growth and differentiation. For example, uptake of transferrin provides iron necessary for growth and parasitism of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum [2]. Richard Scott describes this structure as Natural System , where members share a common interest in the survival of the system but are not necessarily guided by the organization s goals. The organized crime unit is more than an instrument for attaining defined goals; it is fundamentally a social group attempting to adapt and survive in a dangerous environment (Abadinsky 2016:46). Each member of the Mafia, called a Made Guy , is independent in that he does not receive a salary from the group. Basically, each member is a franchise manager, who engages in criminal activity with the support and protection of the Mafia. When the Italians came to the United States in the late 1900 s, the economy was molded by the likes of the Rockefellers, the Astors, and the Vanderbilts. This economical formation created limited opportunities for the middle and, especially, the lower classes. The socioeconomic disadvantage established upon the Italian immigrants leads many to seek success via illegal means. This criminal behavior was exacerbated by the [reproduction of] the kind of illegal groups they had belonged to in the old country (Abadinsky 2016:43). The workplace stressors related to this task includes, awkward postures, excessive force, repetition, and compression. Step 8 consisted of adding the values of steps 5 7 (4+1+1 respectively) to indicate an overall wrist/arm score of 6. Step 9 (Neck Position) resulted in a +2 because the employee s neck primarily stayed within the 0 20 degree range. Flannery O Connor s Short Fiction Essay examples Flannery O Connor s Greenleaf, Everything that Rises Must Converge, and A Good Man is Hard to Find Introduction To the uninitiated, the writing of Flannery O Connor can seem at once cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent. Her short stories routinely end in horrendous, freak fatalities or, at the very least, a character s emotional devastation. Working his way through Greenleaf, Everything that Rises Must Converge, or A Good Man is Hard to Find, the new reader feels an existential hollowness reminiscent of Camus The Stranger; O Connor s imagination appears a barren, godless plane of meaninglessness, punctuated by pockets of random, mindless cruelty. She died of lupus on August third, 1964 at the age of thirty nine. Flannery O Connor remained a devout Catholic throughout, and this fact, coupled with the constant awareness of her own impending death, both filtered through an acute literary sensibility, gives us valuable insight into just what went into those thirty two short stories and the two novels: cathartic bitterness, a belief in grace as something devastating to the recipient, a gelid concept of salvation, and violence as a force for good. These powers include the rights to stop and search suspects, to arrest and interview people when necessary and to take fingerprints and samples (blood samples) for scientific analysis. To use this power under PACE the police officer must have reasonable grounds for suspecting that the person is in possession of or the vehicle contains stolen goods or prohibited articles, such as items of offensive weapons, and articles for use in connection with burglary or theft. As these powers are very wide there are safeguards in that the police officer must give his name and station and the reason for the search. If he or she fails to give reason for the search, then the search is unlawful. This was shown in the case of Osman v DPP 1999, where the officers did not give their names and station. The Queens Bench Divisional Court held that this made a search of Mr. Osman unlawful and so he could not be guilty of assaulting the police in the execution of their duty. If the search is in public, the police can only request that the suspect removes his or her outer coat, jacket and gloves. The code of practice A contains details and guidance on when these powers should be used. In particular it stresses that police officers must not act just because of a person s characteristics. Paragraph 1.7 of code A says: Reasonable suspicion can never be supported on the basis of personal factors alone. For example, a person s colour, age, hairstyle or manner ... Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Executive Summary CIA Central Intelligence Agency Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is centered on the same basic principles as the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in the 1940 s but with some significant changes, specifically in its organization and methods. • 38. Analysis Of John Donne s Holy Sonnet Xiv In Holy Sonnet XIV, John Donne directly addresses God using a desperate and forceful tone. The formal structure of Donne s holy sonnet follows the basic Petrarchan sonnet form. The sonnet has fourteen lines divided into an octave and a sestet. The rhyme scheme of the octave is abba abba. The sestet has the rhyme scheme cdcdee. Donne expresses his spiritual turmoil and longing by using this structure to present different metaphors that illustrate his condition, and he uses Petrarchan conventions to further highlight his spiritual desires. The octave introduces and illustrates the spiritual difficulty that Donne finds himself in trapped in, and wants Godto take him out of. The first line starts with Donne s desperate and urgent command to God to batter or violently beat his heart (1). Donne uses the metaphor of his heart as a metal object, and God as a metal smith to support this command. Donne s heart is a broken object that the metal smith has gently stroked, breathed on to shine, and polished, in order to fix the broken parts. However, Donne claims that this is not enough. The metal smith needs to break, blow, burn in order to make the object new (4). The metal smith must apply more force to shatter the object, and then place it into the fire to melt, so the metal can be purified and new. • 39. Satire in “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde... A satire is a piece of work that is designed to ridicule or tease a group or organization, generally for the purpose of being humorous. The Importance of Being Earnest, a play by Oscar Wilde, is a satire, ridiculing class, gender, and marriage. This essay will describe some points from each of these sections, as well as give a brief synopsis of the play these examples come from. The Importance of being Earnest includes three acts, with seven major characters. In act one, we start with a conversation between Jack (a notable bachelor) and Algernon (an in debt bachelor, with a laid back temperament), in which we learn both have made up friends, who are often sick, as to escape from wherever they live whenever they want. We also learn... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gwendolyn and Cecily act as friends until they learn that they are supposedly engaged to the same person. Then they learn neither of them are engaged to anybody named Ernest, and are friends again. In act three, we discover Jacks history, including that he is Algernon s elder brother. In the end, despite several lies, arguments, and much turmoil, everybody gets married. There are many examples of satire referring to class. One of the first is the fact that the side of the street you live on affects how fashionable you are. This is an example of satire because it is not true, and is ridiculing high class people by pointing out how shallow that they can be. Another example is the statement that sugar is a low class food item. This is a satire for the same reason as the first example. A third example of class related satire is that high class people always talk about other peoples business. This ridicules high class people for being churlish and not allowing for other peoples privacy. In all, Earnest points out how snobbish and shallow Mr. Wilde thought high class people are. There are also many examples of gender based satire. The first of these is that only men can have a Bunburry. This is not true and shows that men think themselves more sophisticated than women. A second example of this type of satire is that women marry for a name. This is a satire because it ridicules women for being shallow. A final example of gender related satire is that women are ... • 40. The Duty Of Journalists And The Public Interest The duty of journalists is to tell the truth. Journalism means you go back to the actual facts, you look at the documents, you discover what the record is, and you report it that way. Chomsky 2008 Working within the media industry, especially as a journalist. It can sometimes be difficult and challenging as you are more than often finding yourself having to raid people s personal lives to get a story. However, Is it in the public interest? that is the one question any journalist must ask themselves if they are to publish a story that may contain an individual s private information. Problems take place within the media when public interest is conflicted with human right and the right to privacy. You can easily validate publishing privet information as a form of public interest, but you however cannot justify the damages it may cause. This is where the media tend to clash with people. Some journalist may argue and say that when publishing privet information it is in the public interest but they must prove that. This is in reference section4 which states, The defendant reasonably believed that publishing the statement complained of was in the public interest. This is under the public interest defence, which was created under the defamation act 2013. The law was set up to allow journalists the right to free speech in reference to Article 10 stating Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. • 42. Analysis Of Louis Pasteur s Invention Of Pasteurization Abstract Wine has been consumed for a particularly long time, probably as early as around 6000 BC ( Evidence of ancient wine, 2015). Many people drink wine because of its health benefits such as lowering the risk of heart diseases and type 2 diabetes, or simply because it tastes good (Quinlan, n.d.). But several people do not know that wine can spoil and turn sour, which was a great concern for the wine industry back in the 1900s. This problem led to Louis Pasteur s invention of pasteurization. It does not only prevent the wine from spoiling, but also prevents many food borne illness, such as tuberculosis. The history of pasteurization, its impacts on public health, and its controversy will be discussed in this paper to answer the question, Should pasteurization be continued? • 43. Leopold Von Ranke Leopold von Ranke lays down a series of critiques against the philosophy of history. He outlines several flaws in the methodology that he believes prevent it from accurately recreating the historical development of ideas, events, etc. To a large degree, Ranke himself avoids the most fundamental of these flaws while himself attempting to relate the historyof European politics from Louis XIV through the fall of Napoleon. However, due largely to the complexity and demandingness of the historical discipline, Ranke s work is itself open to some of his own objections, preventing it from truly gaining a perfect portrayal of the development of the great European powers. The core objection that Ranke raises against the philosophy of history, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The objective historian therefore must take care to consider a vast range of sources indeed, he contends that the ideal history requires sovereignty over an infinite sum of sources in order to properly understand historical developments. While it is difficult to evaluate Ranke s use of sources owing to his lack of footnotes, he clearly focuses on a narrow genre of sources: political and military developments. Literature is hardly treated, and advances in economics, philosophy, and technology receive none whatsoever. Surely Ranke s neglect of the Enlightenment and the rise of international trade limit the accuracy of his understanding of the 18th century. Ranke s biases also prevent his history from attaining the ideal of objective analysis to which he subscribes. This is most glaring in his inexcusable shortchanging of Napoleon, the reaction to whom dominated European politics for a century. Ranke aims to show men shaping European political history, yet he only allots a few sentences to Napoleon, entirely ignoring how he accomplished his conquests. More importantly, his impact on law, economics, and even the political organization of Ranke s own Germany, find zero space in Ranke s essay. While Ranke scores philosophy of history for ignoring the power of the individual, his history often falls short as well, especially when discussing countries in which he is not particularly interested. Too often he slips into generalities about how England ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
