How Does Mlk Use Figurative Language In Letter From...
On April 3rd, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr began the Birmingham Campaign. This was a nonviolent
campaign which consisted of coordinated marches and sit ins against racism and racial segregation in
Birmingham, Alabama. MLK Jr was arrested because of this campaign on April 12th. On the same day
that MLK was arrested he received a newspaper from an ally of his, this newspaper had an article
about a statement from 8 white clergymen. The statement made by this men said that MLK and his
methods were wrong which then provoked King to respond. King then responded on April 16th with
his Letter from Birmingham Jail defending his movement and showing what was truly wrong in
Birmingham. In this letter MLK applies figurative language to establish pathos to all of the races
within Birmingham. MLK uses figurative language to forge pathos for the people of Birmingham ...

An antithesis is a contrast between two things and is another way MLK creates emotions. MLK uses
the right words to create a strong effect on the readers. One quote that shows this is harried by day and
haunted by night (King). In this quote MLK uses this antithesis to show that they are harassed
constantly whether it be night or day. This quote is meant to show that African Americans never get
rest from harassment and are always treated terribly. Another quote that shows antithesis to create
pathos is inner fears and outer resentments . This antithesis shows how an African American feels
inside and outside due to racism and segregation. It is meant to show that inside they feel fear and
outside they are treated unfairly, overall this is meant to show that there is a lot more bad than good in
the life of an African American to create many feelings in the reader. The way that MLK uses
antitheses clearly show the unfair treatment of African Americans to the readers so they can feel what
African Americans have to feel

The Current Situation Of Customization Within The Fashion...
ntroduction.
The purpose of this report is to review the current situation of customization within the fashion
industry and to discuss how this may effect the industry as whole in the future.
By examining a range of recently written reports, aritcles and websites involving the customisation of
fashion the report will briefly describe the history of modern fashion as a whole, the evololution of the
consumer mindset towards customisation in fashion and the different types of customization in fashion

Begging in the early 1700 s with Rose Bertin, a french fashion designer empolyed by queen marie

the 18th century with the wealthy and elite who would travel to paris for customised and unique

It wasn t until the mid 1800 s with charles fredrick worth that dress making was truly revolutionised.
Worth made it so that dressmakers become artisans of garments: a fashion designer. Worth would

here, you can visit the courtyard and see the steel outline of the old house, built in 1976 by architect
Robert Venturi., You can also visit our underground museum, built in the same year. It contains many
of Franklin s inventions. There, you can also learn about the highly fascinating philosopher Benjamin
Franklin. The address is 322 Market Street, Philadelphia, P.A. If you would like to schedule a group

Enjoy your time at Franklin Court!
Back Panel (The House) Benjamin Franklin played a large role in designing his home in Franklin
court. Construction began in 1763, but the house was not finished until two years before Franklin died,
in 1788. The house was three stories high and had ten rooms. No historical evidence exists on what
the exterior looked like, so a steel ghost house was built by Robert Venturi in 1976 to represent where
the house used to be. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Marxist Approach On Social Classes
stratification is brought forth by Domhoff and it supports the idea that social classes themselves have
hierarchical layers determined status, power, and prestige. The critiques would most likely support the
idea of pluralism and that each group is represented in political institutions, but that s just not the case
in practical manners. A Marxist approach would argue that power is never not socially organized. The
reason why power matters is that power by Marxist definition, is the ability to force someone to
complete any action that goes against their best wishes and/or free will. Marx would also argue that
the state is not neutral, like the pluralists believe, but rather the state represents the elite s class
interest. Marx would also argue that the elitist seek to preserve themselves within the governmental
structure. Basically, Marx doesn t support that the government is neutral and that pluralist are correct.
His theories align with the Power Elite Theory by Wright Mills, but Marx would follow up solutions
to wealth inequality with a change in the state s systematic role or roles in society.

From Movements to Parties in Latin America. The Evolution...
The author analyzes how indigenous people s movements in Latin America transformed into viable
political parties. For her, these new parties are good for the democracy because they enrich and
enhance the legitimacy of the political and electoral system. She assumes that the primary link
between state and society are the parties and its accountability impact on the institutions. She proves
that the crisis of the traditional parties and the transformation of the historical electoral constrains
were determinant factors that contributed to ethnic party formation and consolidation. Van Cott
conclusions were based on the study of six countries: Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela as
successful cases, and Peru and Argentina as failed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the asked question is under which conditions ethnic parties tended to merge and to endure?
To untangle this question the book uses primary and secondary sources. The primary ones are the
result of several years of field work in situ in the mentioned countries, except Argentina; and the
secondary ones are an exhaustive review of the scholarly over democratic regimes and electoral
systems, political parties and ethnic parties, and social movements in the international and national
levels. While doing this, she builds her own basic category of analysis: the ethnic party. An ethnic
party is defined as any political organization with a strong ethnic component: ethnic leaders, majority
of ethnic members, or have ethnic or cultural related core demands. Within these strictures, she
explores intrinsic and external reasons for party formation. When the indigenous communities realize
that they could keep their traditions, their land, and basically, their autonomy, and at the same time be
politically independent not a convenient minority for the left or for the dominant parties; they were
internally ready to face the changes coming from the outside. This consolidation process takes
approximately four to ten years when the social movement shapes itself and recognizes its capacity
and political possibilities. The external circumstances got more attention from the author. The

How To Struggle In Laura Hillenbrand s Unbroken
The American olympian Gail Devers once said, Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stumble, but we
can t stay down. We can t allow life to beat us down. Everything happens for a reason, and it builds
character in us, and it tells us what we are about and how strong we really are when we didn t think we
could be that strong. In Laura Hillenbrand s biography Unbroken, the determination Louis Zamperini
possessed, personifies Gail Devers words when, Undoubtedly, Zamperini s will to survive helped him
reunite with his family after World War II, after he fought against the brutal and sadistic beatings he
endured in Japanese POW camps.
Quite an agitator in his adolescent years, Louie tried to find the proper path to success: He doled out

sooth their war torn minds and souls many veterans turned to alcohol for comfort;in fact, Louie was
one of those who turned to alcohol to ease his mind. Drinking made Louie violent and full of rage and
if life is going to get any better something had to change. Louie s determination like a presidential race
pushed him to overcome insurmountable obstacles and refused to admit defeat. One night Louie
attended a sermon and something clicked in Louie reminding him of a promise he made to God: If you
will save me, I will serve you forever (382). That night when Louie arrived home, He carried the
bottles to the kitchen sink, opened them, and poured their contents into the drain (383), this was the
beginning of the new and improved Louie. Later Louie created a camp to help young boys who ve
gone through the same experiences as him, such as getting into fist fights or creating trouble with the
law. When Louie wasn t with boys at camp he gave speeches of his experiences. As years passed

Leadership And Its Impact On Leadership
Let the light within you to shine brighter than the light shining on you. Dabo Swinney
This approach to life and leadership perfectly describes what my family has instilled within me from a
young age. Leadership has intrinsic value and yet seems foreign and intangible to the masses. Noticing
this, I have decided to do all I can to recognize and implement effective leadership. In my life,
learning how to become a leader by following has bolstered my leadership potential. Executing on
leadership and committing to success in the little moments means working the hardest when no one is
watching. Reproducing leaders, not just managing followers, is a mindset that I am dedicating my life
to, so that I can leave a lasting impact, a legacy on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Learning to follow is an invaluable asset that I have utilized in my life.
When a leader is remembered by the general populace, they are often remembered for one single
moment of greatness. George Washington Carver is remembered for his invention of peanut butter, but
an appreciation of what really cultivated his leadership is often neglected. Leading is not solely about
the moments when the spotlight is shining, but more often it is about working the hardest when no one
is watching. Carver spent nearly every waking hour researching a solution to poor returns on cotton in
the south. When he found that the peanut was a valuable candidate for crop rotation, and that peanuts
could be used in hundreds of different ways, including peanut butter, he shined. This relentless
dedication made him to be a leader in his community. Rising to positions of leadership in my life has
often been a result of tireless toil. As a student athlete on the football team in high school, I would stay
for extra drills each day after everyone left. Eventually more joined. This led to my being voted
defensive captain. By the end of my senior year, the whole defensive squad often stayed late to run my
drills alongside me. If I had not chosen to push myself and work when no one was around, I would not
have developed into the player or the leader I was by the end of my senior year. Working harder than
those you lead is a valuable mindset.
Although there are many areas I need to grow in

A Brief Note On Poultry Industry And Nepal
Abstract Poultry Industry in Nepal One of the most important aspects of livestock production is
ensuring producers have adequate biosecurity for their facilities. Biosecurity is procedures or
measures designed to protect the population against harmful biological or biochemical substances.
Whether it be small scale or large scale, the easiest way to maintain the cleanliness of a facility and
ensure the health of the animal is through proper sanitation. This is extremely important in Nepal as
the poultry industry accounts for 4% of the gross domestic product (GDP). In fact, there are over 50
billion chickens raised each year for both meat and eggs with a meat production of 42,180 metric
tonnes and an egg production of 8,74,194 (in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Terai is a flat region and is located to the south of Nepal. It is where most of Nepal s agriculture
occurs as it has fertile soils and has an elevation of 70 m above sea level.
Climate
Temperatures in Nepal range from 40℃ in the Himalayas, to 40℃ in the Terai. Spring lasts from
March to May, summer lasts from June to August, fall lasts from September to November and winter
lasts from December to February. Throughout the summer months, monsoon clouds cover most of
Nepal, raining almost every day and accounting for more than 1000 mm of rainfall each year.
Population
Nepal has a population of 28.7 million people. The most common religion practiced throughout Nepal
is Hinduism, followed by Buddhism. As they are a developing country, Nepal has to cope with
overpopulation. The capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, houses 1,442,271 people. The average age for
Nepalese is 21 years old, while the life expectancy is 66 years of age. Most of Nepal s population lies
between the ages of 25 to 54 which results in a large labour force. Since Nepal is dependant on
agriculture, and most of the population is involved with farming whether it be a backyard farm or an
industrial sized farm, 80% of the population lives in rural areas.
Government
Before Nepal officially became the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, there was a monarchy in
place. The last King of Nepal, Gyanendra Shah, was voted out in 2008. Now, like Canada, Nepal has a
prime minister: Sushil Koirala. He was elected

Government Intervention Within The Market Place
Why does the government feel the need to intervene in the market place especially when the economy
is always so hard to predict? The government intervenes within the market place because they believe
they know what is best for our economy. They attempt to address what is inefficient within the market
place in order to create a more efficient economy. There are many scenarios of government
intervention within the market place. Three great examples of when the government intervened within
the market place was the first income tax and Internal Revenue Act in 1862, the Specie Resumption
Act during the Panic of 1873, and the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
The first example of government intervention in the market place occurred during the American Civil
War. In 1862, the government realized that they would need a bit more revenue coming in to cover the
costs of the Civil War. Because of this, President Abraham Lincoln implemented a tax on household
income. A three percent tax was placed on incomes within the range of $600 and $10,000. A five
percent tax was placed on incomes more than $10,000. However, as the war kept dragging on, the
government realized that this income tax was not going to be enough to cover the expenses of the war.
Later in 1862, Congress passed the Internal Revenue Act. This placed a tax on various items. Things
like gunpowder, iron, leather, playing cards, whiskey, and telegrams were taxed as a result of this act.
The Internal Revenue Act also created a

Historical Context Of The Great Gatsby
The world was, and still is today, immensely seduced by the prosperity gained through the
achievement of the American Dream. Francis Scott Fitzgerald utilized the theme of the American
Dream in the novel The Great Gatsby to illustrate the nation s obsession with success in the eyes of
society. Fitzgerald achieved the theme through the comparison of his own life and love story to the
legendary tale of Jay Gatsby that he created. Furthermore, Fitzgerald draws from the historical time
period, the Jazz Age, to emphasize the population s lure to luxury. However, critics have discovered
the novel s inconsistencies through its several oxymorons that plague reader s interpretations of the

Fitzgerald utilized elements of the Jazz Age in The Great Gatsby to magnify the nation s addiction to
pleasure and prosperity. During the Jazz Age, a new, less restricted, outlook on life for women was
present( Historical Context: The Great Gatsby) . This was exemplified in the novel through the
character of Jordan Baker, a woman who was an athlete in a professional field. Nick Carraway, the
story s narrator, noted the following of Jordan s achievement s: At first I was flattered to go places
with her, because she was a golf champion, and everyone knew her name (Fitzgerald 57). Baker,
nonetheless of her dishonesty, was a successful woman that utilized her newfound freedom to produce
prosperity. Jordan Baker is not the only character in the novel to find prosperity during this era, as the
novel sheds light on the fixed World Series of 1919. Arnold Rothstein, a gambler, aided the Chicago
White Sox s in throwing the World Series, ( Historical Context: The Great Gatsby). In the novel, the
character of Meyer Wolfsheim is molded after Rothstein. Nick compares Wolfsheim s actions to the
single mindedness of a burglar blowing a safe (Fitzgerald 73). The comparison calls to mind the
recklessness of people during the Jazz Age that unlocked great fortune. People s recklessness during
the Jazz Age reached its greatest heights when congress passed the eighteenth amendment, banning
alcohol and sparking a series of illegal corporations that benefited from the nation s mistake
(Historical Context: The Great Gatsby). Prohibition is evident through various character s speculation
of Gatsby s illegal selling of alcohol (Fitzgerald 61). It is furthermore believed by Tom Buchanan that
Gatsby has acquired his money through bootlegging. He stated, I picked him for a bootlegger the first
time I saw him, and I wasn t far wrong (Fitzgerald 133). Prosperity is visible through Gatsby success

Tackling Gender Underachievement in Literacy and Numeracy...
Introduction
In recent years there has been much research into gender learning issues and the apparent learning
disparity between boys and girls.
Such research has included investigations into boys underachievement in literacy and girls
underachievement in mathematics. The aim of such research is to recognise key reasons why such
trends are occurring and perhaps more importantly, to address these within the classroom. Since the
introduction of the National Curriculum, national testing and assessment has provided a
comprehensive account of attainment at all key stages, especially in the key areas of numeracy,
literacy and science. However, such results should not be used exclusively when discussing gender

The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CPLE) has extensively studied gender differences in
learning. One such area of their research is the Gender and Literacy project investigating 4
Londonschools and their findings are now being used to tackle the underachievement of boys in
literacy education.
Social stereotyping is believed to play a major part in the child s learning (Head, 1999), and such role
reinforcement will affect that child s attitude and motivation towards classroom education. It is normal
for young children to spontaneously play in single sex groups and this can be considered as an early
introduction into the single sex peer groups that will dominate in later life. Such group play may be
simply due to a common, shared interest, but the need to conform to group dynamics and the need for
group acceptance may reinforce stereotyping. Within the school environment boys tend to adopt an
anti swot culture (Bradford, 1996:P1), Head states that the swot is derided and one should be cool
about school work. Boys cannot be seen as taking this work too seriously. (1999:P65). The DfES

Summary Of The Poem Blank Space By Langston Hughes
Hughes opens with the instructor said and moves to the next stanza which is surrounded by blank
space. In this next stanza it displays the instructors request for his students to write a paper. He splits
these two lines to show a change in narration. In the first line he is narrating, and then breaks of into
the instructors narration. These are two seperate people and thoughts, therefore a white space and
stanza is necessary. in white space by Gary Lehmann he explains White space functions to divide
stanzas with distinctly different ideas or parts. which is the use Hughes white space between his

In the Watts community, at that time, there were five hundred and forty thousand African Americans.
Many of them had immigrated from the south in search of better work opportunities, as well as

Common Misconceptions Of BDSM Practitioners
Health
Mental Health
One of the most common misconceptions about BDSM practitioners is that these individuals are
psychologically disturbed. Through symbolic interaction it can be understood that the general public
perceives BDSM practitioners as deviant and mentally ill. BDSM practitioners are portrayed to have a
lot of emotional baggage; therefore, to non practicing individuals, people who practice BDSM have
major psychological issues. Due to this misinformation, the general public has created a negative
image of the BDSM practitioners, and this image has lead the general public to fear BDSM. However,
it is important to note that BDSM is not rooted from abuse or domestic violence, nor does
participating in BDSM mean that one enjoys receiving abuse or abusing. According to Holt s (2015),
when it came to the question concerning the stereotype that BDSM practitioners had been abused in
the past, several did report history of abuse during childhood and young adulthood. However, Holt
(2015) noted that several participants expressed mixed emotions when asked about one s history of
abuse that ties with one s participation in BDSM. In contrary to common belief, people who practice
BDSM are as psychologically healthy as the general population. In a cross sectional study conducted
in the Netherlands, 902 individuals who practice BDSM were recruited, and compared to 434 control
participants who had absolutely no experience with BDSM (as cited in Lehmiller). The participants

The Future Is Green Architecture
Architecture is vital function for all parts of society. Without architects people would have to rethink
how they enter buildings, fearing roofs caving in or structural beams giving out. The rigor of an
architect s training leaves these possibilities and worries an unlikely prospect, not considered in the
day to day in a person s events. Architects make both functional and beautiful structures that are
appealing to the eye, as well as useful to the world. The world wouldn t be able to live in functional
cities without the qualities of the architect s skills. The world would have to worry about a door frame
falling on their heads as they walk through the door for their daily workday, into the building that
houses their jobs, their pay based on the efficiencies of the buildings layouts. Hopefully a person
office is the one in the corner with the view, built to capture the sights outside the window and the
prestige of the position, all thought of and created by an architect. Architects have an extremely
specialized task to perform. They have to make sure that a building is stable in all conditions and
useful and also that it looks appealing to senses, capturing the light at dawn, changing with the light at
dusk. Architects do great things and create even greater things, often unnoticed, but worthy of
mention. Architects also have very fun creative jobs where they can go to a rigorous job and make
sure everything is going as planned and the building will meet the needs

Assessment of United States Performance in the Vietnam War
The quote is saying that the USA should have won the Vietnam War because they had better weapons
and better trained soldiers than the Vietcong. This can be split into 2 parts: America should have won
and, America had better weapons and training than the Vietcong . I agree with the first part because
America should have won the Vietnam War as they are very powerful. I disagree with the second part
because the Vietcong ha supplies from Russia and China which were good weapons and they were
extremely well trained, but in guerrilla warfare. It does NOT mean they were less advanced.

America did have better technology which you would have expected them to use toothier advantage
more than they did. Where the American s had helicopters, the Vietcong had bikes. The American s
had bombs which they used in Operation Rolling Thunder. They had a large quantity of them too as
they dropped more bombs than were dropped in the whole of World War II. They had chemicals such
as Agent Orange and Napalm which was special. Regular Napalm just sets fire to things which can be
put out with water or by taking the oxygen away. The American s developed it so that it could burn
without oxygen which created devastating effects. People rolled on the ground but it continued to burn
through their body and it still burnt people when they jumped in water.
I do disagree that the American s were better trained. They were better trained in conventional warfare
and had a lot of experience from World War II. But the Vietcong matched this. They were better
trained than the American s but not in conventional warfare. They were experts in guerrilla warfare
which proved vital in their defeat on the USA. They also had a lot experience as they were at war with
the French for a long time.
The American s also had more problems which prevented them from winning the war. In my opinion,
this was probably the main reason America lost the war. American support diminished rapidly as this

Before And After By Andy Warhol
Before and After
Andy Warhol Doubtlessly, Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol is the symbol of Pop Art movement for
me; however, I like to express my reaction to Before and After, 1961, by Andy Warhol. The foremost
reason for choosing this piece is I just saw it and my reaction is so fresh! Reading about Andy Warhol
and his early stages as an iconic pop artist, Before and After attracts my attention, a black and white
big size piece which shows a profile of a woman before and after a nose plastic surgery. Arthur C.
Danto believes Andy Warhol is a person who can make an art piece out of nothing. Before Warhol,
Before and After would have been a piece of boilerplate commercial art, whose maker would be long
forgotten. (Dante, 2) I agree

The Iran Nuclear Deal Essay
There is no dispute that the Middle East, for the past century, has been a region plagued with tension
and conflict. Differences in religion and ethnicity have been the source for hundreds of thousands of
deaths, and the progression of those issues have shown very little evidence of slowing down as the
bloodshed continues. Many parties on the global scale fear that the combination of evolving
technology and weaponry, and desire to harness nuclear power, is fueling the hatred that some of the
countries in the area have for one another and will eventually lead to an extremely disastrous nuclear
war. As a result, international global organizations, such as the United Nations, have been working to
prevent such an outcome. They are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once the Pahlavi dynasty was overthrown and the country perceived to be taken over by Islamic
extremists, the West began researching the development process to make sure the wrong weapons
would not fall into the wrong hands, but the capital Tehran encouraged the fact that it was strictly for
peaceful purposes. Lies and deceit possessed the rest of the negotiations as both sides tried to get
straight answers to understand what was actually going on in the nuclear program, but nevertheless
those answers were never found as they were clouded by a long standing hatred between certain
Islamic groups and the Western world(). More recently, ten years ago the International Atomic Energy
Agency sent agents to inspect Iran s nuclear facilities and they found trace amounts of enriched
uranium at a factory in Natanz, which led to a three year halt on Iran s uranium enrichment. After
those three years, the enrichment process resumed and the U.N. Security Council responded in 2006
by placing sanctions upon the country s economy in an effort to curb any further nuclear development.
These sanctions, which include a ban on purchasing Iranian oil, a ban on certain Iranians from
traveling outside of the country, and a ban on deals with financial institutions from the country,
severely crippled Iran s economy forcing their oil revenue to collapse and creating an almost absurd
amount of inflation. Despite this, uranium enrichment has not slowed down for the Iranians as the

The Book Of Haggah By Zechariah
The author of the book is Zechariah, he whom the lord remembers. The book was written to the Jews
in Jerusalem that had returned from their captivity in Babylon. The book was written in and around
520 B.C. The major theme of the book, is rebuilding the Temple, only the first step. When we read
Zechariah, it is almost like reading Haggai all over again. The messages are very similar and they are
written around the same time. There was said to be a year between the two and their message of
encouragement. The biggest difference of the two writings is that in Zechariah s account, words like
Messiah and Kingdom appear. There is more prophecy in Zechariah s account than there was in
Haggai. There is nothing negative about this; I liken it unto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Like Israel, we too loose focus a lot, in our day to day lives. There are so many distractions; I truly
believe that we have more than they had in their day. Regardless, the focus should be on the mission I
like to call it, our fathers business. Zechariah, experience many visions as we read this great book it
puts us in the mind set of an Revelation or Daniel. It s hard not to get caught up in the apocalyptic
style of writing. The writer sucks you in to this almost dream world before you have to pull back and
reexamine were you were and the real message that he s conveying. To keep it simple his message was
about encouraging the people to finish what they had started. Rebuilding the temple, throwing in the
golden nuggets about the Messiah would come. After the temple was completed, Zechariah gave
several prophecies about Israel s future. It vividly describes the first and second coming of our lord
and Savior Jesus Christ. This book contains more about the person, work, and glory of Christ than any
other minor prophets combined. Israel s king would come, but his people would reject him. They
would later repent and be restored to God. The king is going to come again for the Judgment, we pray
that when he comes again that we have been faithful and he will find us pure in his sight. The building
of the temple is important here. Our bodies are our temple and we must continue to work on them

Federal Trade Commission And Dental Examiners
Introduction Last February, the Supreme Court issued its opinion in North Carolina State Board of
Dental Examiners v. Federal Trade Commission (Dental Examiners). The case concerned the Board s
decision to stop teeth whitening services by non dentists in the state. The Federal Trade Commission
alleged that the Board had violated antitrust laws by attempting to limit competition by its teeth
whitening decision. State entities such as the Board generally were thought to have immunity from
antitrust laws, but the Supreme Court s decision reversed this long held belief and found that state
boards could be held liability if certain conditions were met. The major condition was that the board
be made up of a majority of active market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, the second part will address how states have responded to Dental Examiners, and what Kansas
can do to address the decision.
Background
To be understand the Dental Examiners decision, it is important to understand the legal background
for the case. To do this, we first have to examine the broader area of law that surrounds antitrust
liability. Secondly, we need to examine the Parker doctrine, which creates antitrust immunity for
states. Finally, we need to look at Dental Examiners itself and its background.
Antitrust Liability A preliminary question is what is antirust liability? While there are other statutes,
the Sherman Antitrust Act is the signature law prohibiting antitrust activity. The act defines antitrust
activity as any restraint of trade or commerce. It also prevents persons from monopolizing or
attempting to monopolizing trade. The act is only concerned with restrains of trade that are
unreasonably restrictive of competitive conditions. A secondary requirement is that there be concerted
action, which requires more than unilateral behavior by individual actors. Examples of antitrust
violations include price fixing, allocations of territory or customers, and exclusive dealing agreements.
Antitrust laws can be enforced either through actions brought by

Analysis Of Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston
Everybody s good when they re good, darling. You don t judge a person by that. It s how they act
when things aren t good that tells you who they really are. ― Megan Jacobson (Goodreads, 56 Quotes
) Much like the world around us, literature has many elements that have the reader portray their own
understanding and perspective of it. In Sweat, Zora Neale Hurston gives the reader many different
situations where many readers can have several viewpoints. This seems to be very similar to the Bible,
where a child of God can read the same scripture as another and have a completely different meaning
in their eyes. Zora Hurston uses many elements that focus on the idea that actions one does speak
louder than words, by the use of religious imagery and Delia, the wife.
Sweat s narrator point of view is told in third person omniscient, meaning the narrator switches from
character to character constantly and does not restrict the reader to one character s perspective.
Hurston uses this element to introduce us to each of the characters daily life and their belief in
Christianity. Not only does it give us each character s standpoint, but also clarification of an outside
view and provide the reader with additional information and background of the married couple.
To begin the story, Hurston, with the use of the narrator being from third person omniscient,
introduces us to Delia as a wash woman who was working on a Sunday night all the way until eleven
o clock after church earlier in the

An Understanding Of God And A New World Of Faith
Faith, a word that has a different meaning to every individual that walks this Earth, cannot be so easily
defined. Faith, when talking about it in the religious sense, makes it even that much harder to
understand. Everyone believes in something, and each of those beliefs have an enormous effect on
how they live their lives. Gerald O Collins, a Jesuit Priest, states that within the Christian faith, lies
two components: Fides Quae and Fides Qua. Fides Quae is the faith which is believed, or the content
of that faith. Fides Qua is the individuals own personal commitment to God. Throughout this paper I
will demonstrate faith using The Compendium, and A New World of Faith to show how a good
understanding of faith can reveal the truth from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This statement simplified would essentially mean that in order to have faith you must be able to trust
in God, even though we
2
cannot physically be in his presence on Earth. To elaborate, a faithful follower of christ must first have
knowledge of the religion, agree to the terms, and then trust in that faith. Faith requires an individual
to not only trust in God himself, but to also firmly believe the scriptures and teachings from within the
Bible as well. Both this knowledge and trust is very crucial to the understanding and involvement with
the Catholic faith. So many people simply agree with the teachings of the Bible, but do not fully trust
in its meaning. For example, every Catholic understands that Jesus was nailed to the cross and died for
our salvation, but they don t believe that in the harder times in life, that Jesus will come through on
this promise for us. Being humble and opening oneself up to this idea of a loving faith relationship
with God is what truly defines the term above all else. A good example of this concept from scripture
would be from (John 3:16) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. This type of knowledge trust
relationship we have with God is a type of rational faith, or fides et ratio. We must have strongly
backed reasoning for what we

The Government Should Support Wind Energy
Many researchers argue that the government should support wind energy. The Union of Concerned
Scientists (UCS) argues that wind energy reduces pollution. A 2009 UCS analysis found that they
could reduce pollution by lowering power plant carbon dioxide emissions. A 25 percent national
renewable electricity standard would lower power plant carbon dioxide emissions 277 million metric
tons annually by 2025 (para. 4). A study by the United States Department of Energy s (DOE) National
Renewable Energy Laboratory explored reducing pollution by generating 80 percent of the country s
electricity production could be reduced by approximately 81 percent by 2050. Wind power can reduce
pollution generated by fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. A typical 750 kW wind turbine provides
enough power for 328 typical (non electric heating) homes. Electricity production accounts for more
than one third of U.S. global warming emissions, with the majority generated by coal fired power
plants, which produce approximately 25 percent of total U.S. global warming emissions; natural gas
fired power plants produce 6 percent of total emissions. In contrast, global warming emissions
associated with renewable energy are minimal, according to data gathered by the International Panel
on Climate Change. Wind emits only 0.02 to 0.04 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt
hour (CO2E/kWh). This is compared with natural gas, which emits between 0.6 and 2 pounds of
CO2E/kWh, and coal, which emits

Human Conscience And Destiny In Oedipus The King By Sophocles
Among the Greek tragedies, there can probably be found something deeper and more elaborate, than
Oedipus the King by Sophocles, but there is not a single one, in which the philosophical depth and
tragic strength would be combined with such incomparable sophistication, noble grace and structural
perfection. The image of a monstrous Sphinx with the face of a woman, wings, sharp claws, the body
of a lion and mysteriously dangerous speech penetrates the whole tragedy as an incorporation of
destiny and unknown future. The following research represents a critical analysis of the Sophocles
tragedy, dealing with various issues raised in it. It gives a detailed analysis of different problems

He saved people from the deathly and truly intimidating allurement of the monster and solved its
riddle. This is what he is like at the beginning of the tragedy. He is described as the savior of humanity
from the dark forces of the Destiny, a hero of mind and will. The people believed that he would
conquer the monster and he himself believed in his own strength. The people considered him a wise
deity and he himself thinks so.
However, Oedipus is a human being and nothing more. The victory of mind and will over Sphinx as a
symbol of Destiny is temporary. Although, Sphinx ran away and left the people in peace, it pierced the
heart of the hero and would soon once again give him unsolvable riddles. This is the core of the
tragedy. Although Sphinx no longer exists, it is still inside the soul of its conqueror. It is more
intimidating than any carnivorous animal as now he is elusive and bodiless just like a phantom.
Sphinx is the mystery of life and every human conscience. The prophet Tiresias has a full right to
mock the savior of people by saying that he should no save himself. Let him know who his mother
and father are and what the meaning of life is. The meaning of life lies in the victory of his spirit over
Destiny and victory of Destiny over spirit (Bloom 65). Let every human solve the riddle of their own

For me to have a nicely landscaped yard, I would have to cut down trees, and move bushes, and make
hills where there are valleys and plant grass where there s dirt.... or so I thought. The thing is, your
home improvement project this summer will cost you a lot less money if you work with what your
yard already has going for it! So what does this mean? It means, use the natural landscape of your
yard to create your home improvement project. Believe it or not, natural and existing landscape in
your yard can even give you ideas for what to do as a project. Step 1. First, you should go out and look
at your yard. What is the natural landscape? By this, I mean what does your yard look like now? This
would include hills, trees, bushes, grass, places where there is just dirt, etc. But, it would also include
a pavement that has already been placed in your yard, a garage or shed in your yard, etc. You need to
get an idea of everything that is there. Step 2. What is it that you want to do with the yard? What
landscape ideas do you have? Think of your dream landscape. Are you looking to create some new
paths and walkways? Do you want to have some type of fountain or something with water like a
waterfall? Do you want a patio in your new landscape? Do you want a swing? This is where you
decide what your home improvement project for the summer might consist of. Step 3. Now, you need
to generate some creative ideas for the existing landscape. This is the fun phase. You can come up
with an idea, no matter how big or small, expensive or not. If you look at the yard in the picture for
this article, it has a small hill/ incline about half way up the yard. At this point in the yard, there is a
slope and then the rest of the yard is on higher ground. A great landscaping idea for this would be to
do some digging and make the slope upright, and put in a retaining wall the whole way across where
the yard goes from one

war was over and the Union had won, the U.S. entered the Reconstruction period. Between 1865 and
1877, the U.S. brought about great change in both the North and the South. Constitutional and social
developments during this time ,as well as years before, that amounted to a revolution. During the
period of Reconstruction, the U.S. took on many constitutional developments. The first development
was the creation of the Confederacy. Major developments included the Reconstruction Amendments,

Most responses toward the new idea of being slavery free in America were negative. While
organizations like the Freedmen s Bureau emerged, so did organizations like the Ku Klux Klan. The
KKK was a white supremacist group that threatened and lynched black voters. They were a secret
group that terrorized African American and tried to stop blacks from having civil rights. Also,
Southern governments found gaps in the Reconstruction Amendments and were able to come up with
obstacles used to prevent blacks from voting. States had literacy tests, poll taxes, and a grandfather
clause. Literacy tests required the reading and understanding of a section of the state s constitution.
Before Reconstruction, most blacks were slaves and it was illegal for slaves to learn how to read and
write. Poll taxes prevented blacks from voting because most were poor sharecroppers or tenant
farmers. They had just left slavery and were out on their own trying to find jobs. The grandfather
clause allowed those whose fathers and grandfathers who voted on January 1, 1867 to vote. Because
the civil war just ended and blacks recently won their freedom, their fathers and grandfathers had
never voted in an election. No black in the South has voted back

In 1949 Alfred Jones created the first hedge fund in the United States with $100,000 and a strategy to
off set the riskiness of holding long position in stocks by shorting other stocks. Since then hedge funds
have grown to control over $2.4 trillion in assets in over 11,000 different funds. Today hedge funds
employ many different techniques and strategies to gain a positive return that actually do not involve
hedging but instead taking a more risky stance in the market to obtain higher returns. Hedge funds are
predominately funded by wealthy investors and pensions but does this mean that they are a safe
investment to make? If I had the ability to invest in a hedge fund I would decline to do so. My
reasoning for this is that while some risky investors believe the high risk high return, lack of
regulation, illiquidity, and fees associated are the advantages of hedge funds that allow them to
generate high returns, from a conservative investor viewpoint these are all disadvantages and risks that
aren t compensated for making investments in hedge funds an unwise decision.
The first advantage or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint is the high risk and high return
associated with hedge funds. Hedge funds allow investors opportunities to seek a return on investment

The Negative Effects Of Gentrification
Gentrification, a very controversial topic that has just recently been brought to the surface in the past
few years, is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle
class taste ( Gentrification ). The two central arguments behind gentrification reflect its deeply
political controversy. One side of the political spectrum argues that gentrification decreases the rate of
crime and increases a neighborhood s value, while the other side argues that gentrification is a form of
institutionalized racism that replaces low income families and dramatically increases rates of
homelessness. The negative effects of this issue could not be anymore clear. In major cities like
Boston, the cost of living has skyrocketed just in the last five years. This process of removing housing
districts to increase the neighborhood s value is negatively affecting low income families, primarily
people of color, while wealthy middle to upper class white families are positively benefiting from it.
Gentrification is interfering with the diversity and economy of many urban areas and historically low
income neighborhoods. There is a very high displacement rate in the United States, particularly in
states like Massachusetts and New York due to gentrification. Evidence has shown that
in many urban areas, including Boston, gentrification contains a racial and ethnic dimension.

  • 5. A Marxist Approach On Social Classes stratification is brought forth by Domhoff and it supports the idea that social classes themselves have hierarchical layers determined status, power, and prestige. The critiques would most likely support the idea of pluralism and that each group is represented in political institutions, but that s just not the case in practical manners. A Marxist approach would argue that power is never not socially organized. The reason why power matters is that power by Marxist definition, is the ability to force someone to complete any action that goes against their best wishes and/or free will. Marx would also argue that the state is not neutral, like the pluralists believe, but rather the state represents the elite s class interest. Marx would also argue that the elitist seek to preserve themselves within the governmental structure. Basically, Marx doesn t support that the government is neutral and that pluralist are correct. His theories align with the Power Elite Theory by Wright Mills, but Marx would follow up solutions to wealth inequality with a change in the state s systematic role or roles in society. How and when did these three classes develop? What are the factors related to the development of class politics? How important are ethnicity and gender in comparison social class in ... She proves that the crisis of the traditional parties and the transformation of the historical electoral constrains were determinant factors that contributed to ethnic party formation and consolidation. Van Cott conclusions were based on the study of six countries: Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela as successful cases, and Peru and Argentina as failed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the asked question is under which conditions ethnic parties tended to merge and to endure? To untangle this question the book uses primary and secondary sources. The primary ones are the result of several years of field work in situ in the mentioned countries, except Argentina; and the secondary ones are an exhaustive review of the scholarly over democratic regimes and electoral systems, political parties and ethnic parties, and social movements in the international and national levels. While doing this, she builds her own basic category of analysis: the ethnic party. An ethnic party is defined as any political organization with a strong ethnic component: ethnic leaders, majority of ethnic members, or have ethnic or cultural related core demands. Within these strictures, she explores intrinsic and external reasons for party formation. When the indigenous communities realize that they could keep their traditions, their land, and basically, their autonomy, and at the same time be politically independent not a convenient minority for the left or for the dominant parties; they were internally ready to face the changes coming from the outside. This consolidation process takes approximately four to ten years when the social movement shapes itself and recognizes its capacity and political possibilities. The external circumstances got more attention from the author. The permissive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Learning to follow is an invaluable asset that I have utilized in my life. When a leader is remembered by the general populace, they are often remembered for one single moment of greatness. George Washington Carver is remembered for his invention of peanut butter, but an appreciation of what really cultivated his leadership is often neglected. Leading is not solely about the moments when the spotlight is shining, but more often it is about working the hardest when no one is watching. Carver spent nearly every waking hour researching a solution to poor returns on cotton in the south. When he found that the peanut was a valuable candidate for crop rotation, and that peanuts could be used in hundreds of different ways, including peanut butter, he shined. This relentless dedication made him to be a leader in his community. Rising to positions of leadership in my life has often been a result of tireless toil. As a student athlete on the football team in high school, I would stay for extra drills each day after everyone left. Eventually more joined. This led to my being voted defensive captain. By the end of my senior year, the whole defensive squad often stayed late to run my drills alongside me. The government intervenes within the market place because they believe they know what is best for our economy. They attempt to address what is inefficient within the market place in order to create a more efficient economy. There are many scenarios of government intervention within the market place. Three great examples of when the government intervened within the market place was the first income tax and Internal Revenue Act in 1862, the Specie Resumption Act during the Panic of 1873, and the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The first example of government intervention in the market place occurred during the American Civil War. In 1862, the government realized that they would need a bit more revenue coming in to cover the costs of the Civil War. Because of this, President Abraham Lincoln implemented a tax on household income. A three percent tax was placed on incomes within the range of $600 and $10,000. A five percent tax was placed on incomes more than $10,000. However, as the war kept dragging on, the government realized that this income tax was not going to be enough to cover the expenses of the war. It is normal for young children to spontaneously play in single sex groups and this can be considered as an early introduction into the single sex peer groups that will dominate in later life. The messages are very similar and they are written around the same time. There was said to be a year between the two and their message of encouragement. The biggest difference of the two writings is that in Zechariah s account, words like Messiah and Kingdom appear. There is more prophecy in Zechariah s account than there was in Haggai. There are so many distractions; I truly believe that we have more than they had in their day. Regardless, the focus should be on the mission I like to call it, our fathers business. Zechariah, experience many visions as we read this great book it puts us in the mind set of an Revelation or Daniel. It s hard not to get caught up in the apocalyptic style of writing. The writer sucks you in to this almost dream world before you have to pull back and reexamine were you were and the real message that he s conveying. To keep it simple his message was about encouraging the people to finish what they had started. Rebuilding the temple, throwing in the golden nuggets about the Messiah would come. After the temple was completed, Zechariah gave several prophecies about Israel s future. It vividly describes the first and second coming of our lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This book contains more about the person, work, and glory of Christ than any other minor prophets combined. Israel s king would come, but his people would reject him. They would later repent and be restored to God. The king is going to come again for the Judgment, we pray that when he comes again that we have been faithful and he will find us pure in his sight. The building of the temple is important here. Our bodies are our temple and we must continue to work on them until Christ comes again to claim us, the Church the people of ... • 26. Federal Trade Commission And Dental Examiners Introduction Last February, the Supreme Court issued its opinion in North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners v. Federal Trade Commission (Dental Examiners). The case concerned the Board s decision to stop teeth whitening services by non dentists in the state. The Federal Trade Commission alleged that the Board had violated antitrust laws by attempting to limit competition by its teeth whitening decision. State entities such as the Board generally were thought to have immunity from antitrust laws, but the Supreme Court s decision reversed this long held belief and found that state boards could be held liability if certain conditions were met. The major condition was that the board be made up of a majority of active market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, the second part will address how states have responded to Dental Examiners, and what Kansas can do to address the decision. Background To be understand the Dental Examiners decision, it is important to understand the legal background for the case. To do this, we first have to examine the broader area of law that surrounds antitrust liability. Secondly, we need to examine the Parker doctrine, which creates antitrust immunity for states. Finally, we need to look at Dental Examiners itself and its background. Antitrust Liability A preliminary question is what is antirust liability? While there are other statutes, the Sherman Antitrust Act is the signature law prohibiting antitrust activity. The act defines antitrust activity as any restraint of trade or commerce. It also prevents persons from monopolizing or attempting to monopolizing trade. The act is only concerned with restrains of trade that are unreasonably restrictive of competitive conditions. A secondary requirement is that there be concerted action, which requires more than unilateral behavior by individual actors. Examples of antitrust violations include price fixing, allocations of territory or customers, and exclusive dealing agreements. Antitrust laws can be enforced either through actions brought by ... • 27. Analysis Of Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston Everybody s good when they re good, darling. You don t judge a person by that. It s how they act when things aren t good that tells you who they really are. ― Megan Jacobson (Goodreads, 56 Quotes ) Much like the world around us, literature has many elements that have the reader portray their own understanding and perspective of it. In Sweat, Zora Neale Hurston gives the reader many different situations where many readers can have several viewpoints. This seems to be very similar to the Bible, where a child of God can read the same scripture as another and have a completely different meaning in their eyes. Zora Hurston uses many elements that focus on the idea that actions one does speak louder than words, by the use of religious imagery and Delia, the wife. Sweat s narrator point of view is told in third person omniscient, meaning the narrator switches from character to character constantly and does not restrict the reader to one character s perspective. Hurston uses this element to introduce us to each of the characters daily life and their belief in Christianity. Not only does it give us each character s standpoint, but also clarification of an outside view and provide the reader with additional information and background of the married couple. To begin the story, Hurston, with the use of the narrator being from third person omniscient, introduces us to Delia as a wash woman who was working on a Sunday night all the way until eleven o clock after church earlier in the ... • 28. An Understanding Of God And A New World Of Faith Faith, a word that has a different meaning to every individual that walks this Earth, cannot be so easily defined. Faith, when talking about it in the religious sense, makes it even that much harder to understand. Everyone believes in something, and each of those beliefs have an enormous effect on how they live their lives. Gerald O Collins, a Jesuit Priest, states that within the Christian faith, lies two components: Fides Quae and Fides Qua. Fides Quae is the faith which is believed, or the content of that faith. Fides Qua is the individuals own personal commitment to God. Throughout this paper I will demonstrate faith using The Compendium, and A New World of Faith to show how a good understanding of faith can reveal the truth from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This statement simplified would essentially mean that in order to have faith you must be able to trust in God, even though we 2 cannot physically be in his presence on Earth. To elaborate, a faithful follower of christ must first have knowledge of the religion, agree to the terms, and then trust in that faith. Faith requires an individual to not only trust in God himself, but to also firmly believe the scriptures and teachings from within the Bible as well. Both this knowledge and trust is very crucial to the understanding and involvement with the Catholic faith. So many people simply agree with the teachings of the Bible, but do not fully trust in its meaning. For example, every Catholic understands that Jesus was nailed to the cross and died for our salvation, but they don t believe that in the harder times in life, that Jesus will come through on this promise for us. Being humble and opening oneself up to this idea of a loving faith relationship with God is what truly defines the term above all else. A good example of this concept from scripture would be from (John 3:16) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. This type of knowledge trust relationship we have with God is a type of rational faith, or fides et ratio. We must have strongly backed reasoning for what we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. The Government Should Support Wind Energy Many researchers argue that the government should support wind energy. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) argues that wind energy reduces pollution. A 2009 UCS analysis found that they could reduce pollution by lowering power plant carbon dioxide emissions. A 25 percent national renewable electricity standard would lower power plant carbon dioxide emissions 277 million metric tons annually by 2025 (para. 4). A study by the United States Department of Energy s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory explored reducing pollution by generating 80 percent of the country s electricity production could be reduced by approximately 81 percent by 2050. Wind power can reduce pollution generated by fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. A typical 750 kW wind turbine provides enough power for 328 typical (non electric heating) homes. Electricity production accounts for more than one third of U.S. global warming emissions, with the majority generated by coal fired power plants, which produce approximately 25 percent of total U.S. global warming emissions; natural gas fired power plants produce 6 percent of total emissions. In contrast, global warming emissions associated with renewable energy are minimal, according to data gathered by the International Panel on Climate Change. Wind emits only 0.02 to 0.04 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt hour (CO2E/kWh). This is compared with natural gas, which emits between 0.6 and 2 pounds of CO2E/kWh, and coal, which emits ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Human Conscience And Destiny In Oedipus The King By Sophocles Among the Greek tragedies, there can probably be found something deeper and more elaborate, than Oedipus the King by Sophocles, but there is not a single one, in which the philosophical depth and tragic strength would be combined with such incomparable sophistication, noble grace and structural perfection. The image of a monstrous Sphinx with the face of a woman, wings, sharp claws, the body of a lion and mysteriously dangerous speech penetrates the whole tragedy as an incorporation of destiny and unknown future. The people believed that he would conquer the monster and he himself believed in his own strength. The people considered him a wise deity and he himself thinks so. However, Oedipus is a human being and nothing more. The victory of mind and will over Sphinx as a symbol of Destiny is temporary. Although, Sphinx ran away and left the people in peace, it pierced the heart of the hero and would soon once again give him unsolvable riddles. This is the core of the tragedy. Although Sphinx no longer exists, it is still inside the soul of its conqueror. It is more intimidating than any carnivorous animal as now he is elusive and bodiless just like a phantom. For me to have a nicely landscaped yard, I would have to cut down trees, and move bushes, and make hills where there are valleys and plant grass where there s dirt.... or so I thought. The thing is, your home improvement project this summer will cost you a lot less money if you work with what your yard already has going for it! So what does this mean? It means, use the natural landscape of your yard to create your home improvement project. Believe it or not, natural and existing landscape in your yard can even give you ideas for what to do as a project. Step 1. First, you should go out and look at your yard. What is the natural landscape? By this, I mean what does your yard look like now? This would include hills, trees, bushes, grass, places where there is just dirt, etc. But, it would also include a pavement that has already been placed in your yard, a garage or shed in your yard, etc. You need to get an idea of everything that is there. Step 2. What is it that you want to do with the yard? What landscape ideas do you have? Think of your dream landscape. Are you looking to create some new paths and walkways? Do you want to have some type of fountain or something with water like a waterfall? Do you want a patio in your new landscape? Do you want a swing? This is where you decide what your home improvement project for the summer might consist of. Step 3. Now, you need to generate some creative ideas for the existing landscape. This is the fun phase. You can come up with an idea, no matter how big or small, expensive or not. If you look at the yard in the picture for this article, it has a small hill/ incline about half way up the yard. At this point in the yard, there is a slope and then the rest of the yard is on higher ground. A great landscaping idea for this would be to do some digging and make the slope upright, and put in a retaining wall the whole way across where the yard goes from one ... Once the war was over and the Union had won, the U.S. entered the Reconstruction period. Between 1865 and 1877, the U.S. brought about great change in both the North and the South. Constitutional and social developments during this time ,as well as years before, that amounted to a revolution. During the period of Reconstruction, the U.S. took on many constitutional developments. The first development was the creation of the Confederacy. While organizations like the Freedmen s Bureau emerged, so did organizations like the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK was a white supremacist group that threatened and lynched black voters. They were a secret group that terrorized African American and tried to stop blacks from having civil rights. Also, Southern governments found gaps in the Reconstruction Amendments and were able to come up with obstacles used to prevent blacks from voting. States had literacy tests, poll taxes, and a grandfather clause. Literacy tests required the reading and understanding of a section of the state s constitution. Before Reconstruction, most blacks were slaves and it was illegal for slaves to learn how to read and write. Poll taxes prevented blacks from voting because most were poor sharecroppers or tenant farmers. They had just left slavery and were out on their own trying to find jobs. The grandfather clause allowed those whose fathers and grandfathers who voted on January 1, 1867 to vote. S P 500 Table of Contents High Risk High Return 3 HFRX Global Hedge Fund vs. S P 500 3 Long Term Capital Management 4 Lack of Regulation 4 Withdrawing Funds 5 Hedge Fund Fees 5 Bibliography 7 In 1949 Alfred Jones created the first hedge fund in the United States with $100,000 and a strategy to off set the riskiness of holding long position in stocks by shorting other stocks. Since then hedge funds have grown to control over $2.4 trillion in assets in over 11,000 different funds. Today hedge funds employ many different techniques and strategies to gain a positive return that actually do not involve hedging but instead taking a more risky stance in the market to obtain higher returns. Hedge funds are predominately funded by wealthy investors and pensions but does this mean that they are a safe investment to make? If I had the ability to invest in a hedge fund I would decline to do so. My reasoning for this is that while some risky investors believe the high risk high return, lack of regulation, illiquidity, and fees associated are the advantages of hedge funds that allow them to generate high returns, from a conservative investor viewpoint these are all disadvantages and risks that aren t compensated for making investments in hedge funds an unwise decision. The first advantage or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint is the high risk and high return associated with hedge funds. • 35. The Negative Effects Of Gentrification Gentrification, a very controversial topic that has just recently been brought to the surface in the past few years, is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle class taste ( Gentrification ). The two central arguments behind gentrification reflect its deeply political controversy. One side of the political spectrum argues that gentrification decreases the rate of crime and increases a neighborhood s value, while the other side argues that gentrification is a form of institutionalized racism that replaces low income families and dramatically increases rates of homelessness. The negative effects of this issue could not be anymore clear. In major cities like Boston, the cost of living has skyrocketed just in the last five years. This process of removing housing districts to increase the neighborhood s value is negatively affecting low income families, primarily people of color, while wealthy middle to upper class white families are positively benefiting from it. Gentrification is interfering with the diversity and economy of many urban areas and historically low income neighborhoods. There is a very high displacement rate in the United States, particularly in states like Massachusetts and New York due to gentrification. Evidence has shown that in many urban areas, including Boston, gentrification contains a racial and ethnic dimension.
