Waterfalls can form in two ways: 1) Differential rock resistance where less resistant rock erodes faster than more resistant rock, changing the river's gradient and causing water to flow vertically; and 2) Faulting which displaces land vertically relative to adjacent blocks, causing the river to flow down the height difference and form a plunge pool.
