There are two main types of waves: destructive and constructive. Destructive waves are tall with a weak swash but strong backwash, causing erosion. They form steep beaches. Constructive waves are low with a strong swash and weak backwash, building up coastlines into gently sloping beaches. Beach formation results from material transported by longshore drift and deposited by constructive waves. Beach profiles change from large boulders near cliffs to smaller, rounder materials like sand as one moves toward the shoreline.
