Roy's Adaptation Model views the person as an adaptive system that interacts with a constantly changing environment. It defines four adaptive modes - the physiologic, self-concept, role function, and interdependence modes. As a nursing theory, it provides a framework for assessing a person's behaviors and environmental stimuli in order to determine their ability to adapt and then planning nursing interventions to promote adaptation. The theory has been applied in various healthcare settings as well as in nursing education. While it offers a logical organization of concepts and defines the nursing process, some of its terms have overlapping definitions or are complex.
