2. Kenning In Beowulf
ENGLISH 5193 Professor Christopher A. Jones A brief survey in compounds and kennings in OE and
ON Ash Gao I chose the definition of kenning to start with, because there is a handbook by Snorri. I
then gave some explanations and supplements to his classification according to some modern scholars.
Then I argued that OE lacks the pure kenning that ON has. Finally I inserted a story showing
compound making as an important skill for skalds, and how it is equally important in OE. Perhaps the
most quoted definition of the term kenning is that by Georg Paul Rudolf Meissner in Die Kenningar
der Skalden (1921: 2), Die einfache Kenning ist also ein zweigliedriger Ersatz für ein Substantiv der
gewöhnlichen Rede , with an addition wesentlich für die Kenning ist, dass sie als Ersatz empfunden
wird (12). This definition may seem to modern scholars imprecise, as the two part substitution remains
too loosely defined. Here I turned to a source, much younger than Beowulf, for the definition of this ...

a lot for stories and had good knowledge about Christianity, thus it is rather likely that they be well
learnt from this Greek source, its Latin translations, and not to mention from Beowulf. Nevertheless, it
is striking the heavy ratio of Germanic themed kennings in the corpus. Man has over 1126 entries

3. Conflict Between Principles And Power In Captain America
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a movie attempting to understand the confusing and
contradictory world that is modern America s political and social order. It is a movie that is based
upon the modern era and yet somehow timeless. It is a movie that is firmly rooted in the Fantasy/ Sci
Fi genre with super soldiers, flying aircraft carriers, and a bevy of comic book characters. It is also a
movie which perfectly encapsulates the chaotic and bewildering nature of the war on terror and the
surveillance state. Though it is a movie set entirely in the United States and primarily is focused on
domestic policy, the primary conflict is one applying to foreign policy as well and this is the conflict
between principles and power, between survival and ideals. Though the movie may initially seem to
favor principles over power, upon a closer look the movie focuses a great deal on power and draws
greatly on Realist theory for its worldview.
The axis of the movie is the reveal to Captain America that S.H.I.E.L.D., the multinational defense
organization he works for, is developing the technology to launch preemptive strikes. This disturbs the
physical manifestation of American values and leads him to confront S.H.I.E.L.D s director Nicholas
J. Fury. The ensuing argument perfectly encapsulates the conflict between principles and power in
post 9 11 America. When it is pointed out he had done some morally questionable actions during
WWII Captain America responds yeah we compromised.

4. Synthetic Composites Reinforced By Unidirectional Glass...
Abstract:
This research paper intended to recognize the machinability of polyester composites reinforced by
unidirectional glass fibers when subjected to milling operations. The principle aim of this
investigation is to screen the tool rake angles, cutting process parameters and their effect on the
machined quality. It was observed from experimental results that mechanisms of machined composites
altogether influenced by fiber orientation. The results revealed that the surface roughness, surface
damage and machining forces all varies severely with fiber orientation.
Introduction:
Glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) have been widely used in aircraft, automobile and structural
applications. The components need high quality machined surface, better dimensional accuracy and
surface consistency. But machining mechanism of composite materials is not easy to understand,
because of its inhomogeneous and anisotropic behavior. The machining leads to several damages such
as fiber cracks, delamination, fiber pullout and burning. Hence, research in machining of GFRPs is
few when compared with metals, the effect of tool nomenclature and materials [1, 2]. The
investigators have studied the machining of chip formation mechanisms [3,4 and 5]. The researcher
investigated on machinability integrity on different fiber directions with different tool helix angles [6].
The experimental studies are also based on machining characteristics related to orthogonal cutting of
unidirectional fiber

The Millau Viaduct is a cable stayed road bridge which spans the valley of the river Tarn situated
alongside the Township of Millau in Southern France. The viaduct standing over 343 meters tall was
the world s tallest cable stayed bridge and was proposed as the missing link in the A75 auto route that
connects Paris in the north to Perpignan in the south. The Millau Viaduct was the product of 17 years
of ideas, proposals, planning and designs that resulted in shaving 40 miles off the former route
through the region, a boom in local economic development and the completion of the one of the world

western society are conveyed violence, alcohol, lies, deceit, conflict, along with those who participate.
Through his characters, Albee was able to reveal the different types of people who make up society

HIV/AIDS and its Impacts
HIV/AIDS is an illness that has been known across the globe for more than two decades because of its
effects on people, families, and relationships. This disease has contributed to the deaths of millions of
people throughout the world while there are other millions of people living with the illness. The
prevalence of HIV/AIDS is also evident in the fact that it continues to affect people, families, and
communities every day. The impact of this disease on families and communities is attributed to the
fact that it s not only transmitted from one individual to another but for every infected individual,
there is a family or community affected. Generally, the disease can be transmitted through unprotected
sex, during birth, and when sharing drug injecting equipments because it s a blood borne virus.
HIV/AIDS is a global challenge for the health sectors because it cannot be cured but only managed

are also affected. Since this disease is incurable and can be regarded as a chronic illness, families and
partners are usually mandated with the task of providing physical and emotional care to the infected
persons. The need to provide such care places considerable strain on the families and partners. As a

not have rights, it is also proven in the book Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban with animals
such as Crookshanks and Buckbeak that do not have animal rights due to the facts that both animals

of the two being misjudged and automatically assumed guilty when something goes wrong, unable to

Looking around my desk: a computer, glass mug, textbooks, a microphone, and various small
mementos; just in the close vicinity I have more products of globalization than an entire household
just a few centuries ago. Globalization is the flow of culture, a byproduct of spreading technology and
economic influence. This process has allowed the world once stricken with distinct cultures and
borders to consolidate into a functioning machine like entity. This entity not only delivers the products
seen on my desk, but it also has the potential to do wonders. For example, Thomas Friedman proposes
the theory that globalization is not merely an efficient machine but a mechanism for peace in his book
The World Is Flat. This peace is held together through a symbiotic relationship, with each component
secured with their place in line. While his theory seems promising it is important to evaluate both
sides to look for practical limitations or exploitations.
Why does globalization exist, why are countries softening their borders and working together in an
unprecedented new way? The answer to this question is demand. The demand to have the latest phone,
laptop, or artistically woven basket made by a designer from across the globe. In order to deliver the
product and meet the demand what needs to occur Friedman labels the supply chain symphony (126).

affect essential matters of life and death, but also issues that occur in people s daily life. Considering
the broad range of basic rights covered, it is not astonishing that the HRA is viewed as one of the most

What is it about human life that makes it valuable? Some people believe that life is valuable even
before birth. Before we are given a name or our gender has been identified, we are valued. As
children, we are taught that we are valuable and that life is valuable. However, what makes human life
valuable? The answer to this question may come from an analysis of the lives of two people; a
fictional character and a real life person, and a comparison to my own personal belief about the value
of life. Human life is valuable because of our capacity to learn and grow. From our mistakes to our
strengths, we are all valuable.

Religion and biblical law cannot be separated from life in general and politics in particular. Politics
has to do with civil government. Politicians get elected, make laws, tax, spend, regulate, and control.
Every law passed and every spending decision is based on some moral system. This is where the Bible
comes in. All morality is based on a religion. The Bible says, Thou shalt not steal. Right there is the
common and basic law against theft. What we believe religiously will affect our political beliefs and

the values, the standard would be balanced. Yet, when religion or morality becomes separated from
decision making, convenience becomes the standard. We are then left with two options: either God s

victims. One of the victims that testified at the Royal Commission, called AVB for confidentiality, was
sexually abuse by 2 different Molesters. At the time, his home was largely destroyed by a fire and his
parent s marriage came to an end. They also suffered financially and were considered the poor family

passive, quiet, troubled, lonely children from single parent or broken homes .

21. The Effects of the Plague on Fourteenth Century Europe and...
The 14th century was an era of catastrophes. Some of them were man made, such as the Hundred
Years War. However, there were two natural disasters either of which would have been enough to
throw medieval Europe into real Dark Ages . The Black Death that followed on the heels of the Great
Famine caused millions of deaths, and together they subjected the population of medieval Europe to
tremendous struggles, leading many people to challenge old institutions and doubt traditional values.
These calamities altered the path of European development in many areas. In his essay called An
Essay on the Principle of Population , the English political economist Thomas Malthus (1766 1834),
stated that since production increased arithmetically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Caffa was probably not the only port the plague passed through en route to Europe, but it would
forever be the place said to be where the pestilence originated. As soon as the citizens realized what
horrible sickness had come from these ships, they expelled them from the port but it was too late.
Hundreds of the ships rats had scurried down the mooring ropes tied to the docks. The fleas
(Xenopsylla cheopis (oriental rat flea) that these infected vermin hosted were the real carriers of the
disease. As the infected rats died off, the fleas would seek any other warm blooded host; which
included man. There are no accounts of life in the besieged port, but there is enough information to
suggest what Caffa s final days may have looked like. John Kelly writes, As the death toll mounted,
the streets would have filled with feral animals feeding on human remains, drunken soldiers looting
and raping, old women dragging corpses through rubble, and burning buildings spewing jets of flame
and smoke into the Crimean sky. There would have been swarms of rodents with staggering gaits and
a strange bloody froth around their snouts, piles of bodies staked like cordwood in public squares, and
in every eye, a look of wild panic or dull resignation. The disease spread throughout Europe with
astonishing speed and fatal consequences. By January 1348, the plague was in Marseilles. It reached

Education About the Queer Community A hate crime (defined by Dictionary.com) is a crime, usually
violent, motivated by prejudice or intolerance toward an individual s national origin, ethnicity, color,
religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability. The Matthew Shepard and James
Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act prevents crimes against all people, specifically minorities, based
on prejudice (United States Department of Justice). No laws or acts can change the ignorance and
bigotry that have become so prevalent in society; however, education and understanding can change
the viewpoints many have developed of the LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer,
Asexual) community.
Sexual Orientation, defined by The Human Rights Campaign is, An inherent or immutable enduring
emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to other people. A lesbian is a woman who feels romantic
and/or sexual attraction toward other women. A gay man feels romantic and/or sexual attraction
toward other men. Being bisexual means to (male, female, etc.) feel romantic and/or sexual attraction

Following an era of economical prosperity, the Great Depression, otherwise known as the ugliest sister
of the 1900 s family, which lasted an entire decade from 1929 to 1939, began on a fateful day with the
New York Stock Exchange abruptly crashed and was unable to recover quickly. This occurrence, of
course, had an unforgivable effect on the economy, leading to one of the most memorable and
significant eras in American history. Not only affecting the economy domestically, internationally
trading was burdened by the limp leg that was the United States. Socially, people were struggling to
regain their balance after a main income source agriculture was swept away by the Dust Bowl, only
worsening the drawn out effects of the initial Wall Street crash. Politically, the US faced severe
turmoil with presidency of Herbert Hoover due to a lack of action to prevent economic decay and
promote domestic and foreign recovery. Needless to say, after one presidential term, Franklin D.
Roosevelt was elected into office and soon passed the New Deal, a highlight in his presidential career.
However, due to the previous president, there were several critics about the nature and efficacy of
such a policy. The Great Depression was a time of discussion and criticism of political policy and the
nature and efficacy of said policy in dominating the backfire of grand economical proportions within
the United States alone. The presidency of Herbert Hoover only lasted for one term from 1929 to 1933

The fear of the unknown is the greatest fear among all fears; meanwhile, the way to achieve our

27. Blind Faith in Cat s Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut
In current society, critical thinking can be sparse. It is unusual that people question the traditions they
have grown up with. Although this ignorance can be safe and simple, its outcome is ultimately
problematic. In the satire Cat s Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut proves that undiscerning belief in anything will
inevitably end in tragedy. Vonnegut demonstrates this using sensitive topics such as Science and
Religion.
In the present day, society depends on Science greatly; it supplies jobs, provides technology capable of
saving lives, and furthers our society in many positive ways. However, society often misses the
negative aspects of Science. Vonnegut identifies many problems with the general perspective on

Papa tells John that he and Frank must lead San Lorenzo because they have knowledge about science
and science is magic that works (Vonnegut 218). Rather than choosing the most kind or wise
successor, Papa chooses Science above all else. He blindly sees Science as a good thing and he
believes it will bring salvation to his people. There is no discrimination between good Science and bad
Science, and this kind of blind acceptance leads to the demise of the population of San Lorenzo. Papa
commits suicide using the ice nine in his castle. John and the Hoenikkers find Papa dead and quickly
try to clean up the remaining ice nine but despite their best efforts the end of the world is inescapable.

So if there are worries before war, there definitely has to be problems post war. When veterans return,
they expect things to go back to normal, but they are definitely different. Veteran families have post
war problems just like the veterans. If the veteran has trouble reintegrating into civil life, that affects
their everyday mood and their ability to support their family. These families worry about their loved
one falling into depression, having anxiety, and committing suicide. In the article Home from War by
Lizette Alvarez, she talks with Anthony Klecker who states that I was trying to be the tough marine I
was trained to be not to talk about problems, not to cry.... I imprisoned myself in my own mind. This is
a big contributor to the suffering that families go through, because they don t know what their family
member is thinking. They have no idea what to do to be able to help because these veterans want to
keep everything bottled up. There are also cases where the children end up developing the same
mental illnesses because of what they see. Everything that children see affects them a lot, changing
their future probably for the worst. The one solution these families want is for more help from the
government, even though they already help. They just want to help these veterans move on from the
war lifestyle.
A big problem that affects veterans the most is the thought of how they are going to make a living.

Bion documented three behaviors that occur during dissonance as; (1) dependence, (2) fight flight, and
(3) pairing (Bright, 2011). Dependence in a group is seen as members blaming someone or something
else for their awkward feeling and either becoming dysfunctional when the group becomes overly
dependent on members, or having a positive outcome if the group comes together and rallies to
succeed (Bright, 2011). I experienced both sides of dependence when my former employer made
major changes to the leadership of the organization. The leader that was put in place was rarely there
and had a separate agenda from the organization. At first a few of us banded together to keep things at
status quo, but after a while we gave up and I became emotionally detached from the organization.
Fight flight behavior is evident when there is ambiguity. Disruptive conflict between members of the
group is the fight aspect and the flight aspect is when members mentally shut down and no longer
participate in the group (Bright, 2011). Neither behavior is productive in a group, but can be turned
into a positive if recognized and dealt with proactively; communication is the key. During the
reorganization mentioned above, there were several disruptive conflicts that resulted in terminations.
Becoming emotionally detached wasn t a bad thing for me on a personal level because I didn t take

There are number of solutions available in this regard. Same solutions are available on various google
forums and are easily accessible. The best solution to this sticking problem is the use of Kapton Tape.
The build platform comes coated with the same tape. This is easily available on Amazon. Another
solution is the use of bluepainter s tape. It can be coated over the build platform with ease and it is
important that the tape being coated is not overlapped. If none of the above mentioned solution works,
then get hold of any aerosol hairspray and coat the platform with its spray. It is important to let the
spray soak down before the machine is turned for use.
Another problem is the alignment of the build platform. It is generally observed that the alignment of
the platform is not as it is after getting a certain number of printouts. The same needs to realign before
giving the final print command. This may happen often so user should not get complacent.
The button on the front panels tend to get stuck in the wood casing which causes a lot of problem
during the printing process. On the other hand, push buttons tend to get stick into the casing during the
platform alignment procedures as well.

individuals have been very comfortable in letting their opinionated stereotypes come out into the

It is now a common occurrence to come across a video on the internet of racists yelling at these
