In August of 1861, William F. Ketchum patented the Ketchum Hand Grenade. Shortly after, in the
years of 1863 and 1864, the grenade was implemented in the American Civil War.
With a lemon shaped piece of iron and a tail made of paper or cardboard, the handheld explosive
greatly resembled a dart. On the front of the grenade s body was a plunger, which held a

The Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), which was established in 1950, had a humble beginning. It
played no major role in toppling the 104 year Rana oligarchy in 1950. It only won four seats in the
parliament in the first ever multiparty general elections held in 1959.
It suffered a series of breakups. The CPN broke into two after King Mahendra in a royal coup
dislodged the BP Koirala government in 1960, banned political parties and imposed the party less
Panchayat system. One group supported the royal action and the other opposed it. Other breakups
followed, generating nearly a dozen CPNs.
In 1990, when the Nepali Congress Party led a people s movement to restore democracy in the wake

Naphthalene and benzoic acid are two compounds studied in this experiment. Sodium benzoate is
also an important substance involved in the separation process. The separation technique used to
extract the different compounds of a heterogeneous mixture is based on solubility and density.
Regarding naphthalene and benzoic acid, their chemical properties differ from one another
(Separation 1). The detailed separation process of naphthalene and benzoic acid, found in a mixture,
follows. First of, when mixed together, benzoic acid and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) react and
produce sodium benzoate, water and carbon dioxide (Separation 2).
Water has a particular density and naphthalene, as well as benzoic acid, are insoluble in water.
Regarding naphthalene, it does not react with sodium bicarbonate, but it dissolves in ether ()
(Separation 2). Thus, by adding sodium bicarbonate and ether to the benzoic acid naphthalene
mixture, one is left with immiscible aqueous sodium benzoate and naphthalene in ether solutions.
Furthermore, ether is less dense than water and so, an ether layer floats on water as the two
solvents are mixed (U of Missouri). Next, Pasteur pipettes are used to mix thoroughly the resulting
solution, so that the two distinct layers form into a centrifuge tube. As ether floats on water, it is
found at the top layer, whereas sodium benzoate, which contains the converted amount of benzoic
acid, is found in the water bottom layer of the centrifuge container ( Separation
