INTRODUCTION- RETAIL DESIGN
Retail is one of the largest sector of business in the world. Retail store is a place where buying and selling of goods an services
takes place.
Retail design is a complex study which incorporates the management of people and the space.
PRINCIPLES OF RETAIL DESIGN
Principles of retail design

2. Inducing entrances
3. Organizing store spaces

HOW DO PEOPLE BUY
1. Traditional concept:
Traditionally retailer’s were the king. They sell only what consumer asks for. Consumers were not using their all five senses
mostly that time. That time there were counter systems. There were counters between retailer and consumers. Consumer only
buy that product that he needs, there were less sales.
2. Modern concept:
Now consumers have became the king. Consumers wants freedom while shopping. people are using their five senses while doing
shopping. Shopping is an experience, customers now want more services to be provided to them. Sales have been increased.
HOW DO PEOPLE BUY
People love to look, window-shop, and buy. Shopping as an experience should provide fun, which in turn provides profits.
Shopping is an activity that is part of our everyday lives. Whether we are shopping to feed ourselves, clothe ourselves or simply
out of enjoyment, the places we choose to shop say something about our lifestyle, culture and interests. We create a relationship
with the retail environment we feel comfortable with and reject spaces that do not match our image.
A consumer connects his lifestyle with the product he/she sees in the window display and gets attracted towards it.
A consumer wants freedom while shopping. They use all their senses while doing shopping. They like to listen music, smell
fragrances in the store, watch the space, touch the things while doing shopping.
HOW DO PEOPLE BUY
How smells and sounds impact our shopping habits:
Many retailers and product companies use gender- specific colors to trigger positive emotions or associations and compete for a
sale. Sounds and smells can influence consumer purchasing decisions .
SMELLS:
Nobel Prize –wining research reveals that our sense of smell has tremendous power to elicit an emotional response and trigger
memories from our past. It was found that the aroma increases the number of customers purchasing items and the amounts of
their purchases. An earlier study using Nike shoes found that consumers desired the shoes more, and were willing to pay more,
when the room had a mixed floral scent.
SOUNDS:
Music can have a big impact on consumer moods. One study found that when subjected to loud music, customers will spend less
time in a store. Another interesting finding from a recent study was that customers actually shop longer when exposed to
unfamiliar music. Just as department stores use different scents in certain departments, many use different music in some areas
to appeal to varying demographics.
Scents and fragrances are being used in stores Music systems are being used in stores
During the study program of retail design, I have learnt various factors that should be paid
attention to while designing a retail store.
After studying retail design, I have been given a case study
CASE STUDY
I am suppose to design a store for a leading furniture and interior finishes brand Stanley. The space has to reflect the brand
positioning, the range of products and brand image. The space has to be given due justice to the various sub categories of
products, the space and the décor has to be modular and the space should have the ability to transform, move around and be
utilized as per the product need.
DESIGN BRIEF:
The 2,109 sq. mts. Floor space is located on the ground floor of a premium mall in the upcoming suburbs of Pune. The façade and
the store frontage are of prime importance to the client. The building is on a corner plot surrounded by two roads north and east
side. The store is inside the mall and has no show window or external view.
CASE STUDY
As per the case study, the requirements of my client are:
•Cashier and help desk station
•Customer interaction area
•Sofa set display
•Display of 2-3 bedroom sets
•Display of 25 sofas
•Wardrobes
•Collection series
Space available for space planning
Understanding a brand is one of the most important aspects of the retail designers' role.
Stanley is a well-known brand. The consumer visiting the store will be upper class
people so the space should be simple, pure, luxurious, as well as elegant.
For designing a space we need to choose a concept and mood for that space.
I have chosen contemporary concept for my design. As the contemporary look is very
clean and simple.
Contemporary
CONCEPT
I have chosen a concept of
contemporary style for my
design. Contemporary style is
often defined by clean lines
with a casual atmosphere,
open spaces.
CONCEPT BOARD
RETAIL STORE DESIGN
A successful store is one that is designed to merchandise in addition to look good. A store can be divided into two principle parts:
the exterior which gives identification, encompasses the storefront, show windows, and displays, and the interior where the
promise of the storefront display is delivered. Briefly stated the storefront initiates the sale, and the interior consummates it.

RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION
The design of the exterior to a store is very important. It needs to attract the customer.
How a store visually welcomes customer has to do a lot with whether or not they enter the store.
Points to be considered under exterior presentations are:
• Store front
• Entrance
• Facia sign
• marquee
• Banners
• Awnings
• Walks and entry
• Landscaping
• Window display
RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION
STORE FRONT
STORE FRONT
The design of the shop’s front is very important. It needs to entice the customer in and give a glimpse of the products beyond
the threshold. The shop front's main task is to communicate to potential customers the essence of the interior and to display a
glimpse of what can be found on the other side of the glass.
There are two types of shop front. These are
Shop Front
Contemporary Shop FrontTraditional Shop Front
The design of traditional shop
front has a sense of symmetry.
Traditional shop front design
includes panelling, use of
arches,corbels,ornamentation
etc.
The look of contemporary
shop front is clean, simple,
with glazing reaching from
floor to fascia panel.

MARQUEE
Marquee is the special type of sign to display the name of the store. It can be sometimes a kind of permanent canopy at
the entrance or on top of the building.

BANNERS
Banners are used increasingly as an inexpensive, eye catching means of promotion.
Banners can be hanged from flat poles or projected from the building. This leads to making the consumer feel that changes
are taking place.

WALKS AND ENTRY
Picture walking along the wall where the flat surface is plain glass door, as opposed to the protective feeling offered by
walking under a porch or a canopy.
Entrances that allow shoppers to come into a store without being aware of their entry is becoming more popular.
Whenever we add an entry way it should be designed to blend with the architecture of living.
I haven’t provided any other walkways or porches as store is situated
inside the mall
RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION
AWNINGS
The awnings provide the customer with protection from weather and makes viewing of the window display more
florescent.
It adds appeal to the window display.
A variety of styles of awnings are available – square, long, dome etc.
I haven’t used awnings in my design as store is located inside the mall
RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION
LANDSCAPING
The proper landscaping increases the acoustics of place. Landscaping leads the customer’s eye to the focal point using color
and texture to provide contrast and harmony.
The essence of a good landscaping is simplicity. That means the designs that are easy to maintain.

WINDOW DISPLAY
The front side of the store, usually contains display windows, displaying items for sale or otherwise designed to attract
customers to the store.
Usually the term refers to larger windows in the front façade of the shop. These are designed primarily with the effect upon
potential customers in mind
RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION
WINDOW DISPLAY
Points to be followed in designing window display are
• Principles of design: The principles are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural element of design. These are:
balance, proportion, emphasis, rhythm and harmony.
• Colour rules that can improve display
• Lighting
I haven’t designed any window display for my retail store design

It illustrates added variety of forms. It is a variation of straight plan
where the square footage for keeping boxes can be done along with
the perimeter of the shop.It has bellows effect.
It establishes interest without excessive cost. Ceiling and floors can
be lowered or raised to create departments and zones.
This is the conventional form of layout that utilizes walls and
projections to create smaller spaces. It is a very economical plan to
execute and can be adapted for any store.
It pulls patron through the store to the rear. It is generally made for
large stores which are 5,000 sq. feet or more and on one level.
It permits angular traffic flow and creates perimeter design interest and
excitement in movement.

It is important to make the right choice of
selecting the correct type of floor plan for
the given space.
As per the case study given, I have to
design a store for a leading furniture and
interior finishes of brand stanley. To design
any store we need to understand it is like a
carte blanche(blank document) and to
design it in a proper manner we need to
device a plan which is suitable in utilizing
space and should fulfill all the
requirements.
For solving this case study, I am
considering straight floor plan as it is one
of the most efficient and economical plan.
A straight floor plan makes the most
efficient use of both floor and wall space.
Even commomly unused areas like
corners, can be used.
It is so extremely versatile. They
accomodate all of major display styles .We
can create any kind of feel with a straight
floor plan.

CONCLUSION
While studying Retail design, I explored different ways of displaying products, creative and unique ways of doing window
display that can attract maximum customers along with that I also learned about colour influence on different backgrounds.
To attract maximum customers its not only the exterior window display that plays the very important role but along with it
the interiors, the plan, ambience, proper lighting are also important. Keeping all these in mind I devised the retail store
layout with its power display and other two layouts.

Retail design

  • 1. C I D P
  • 2.
  • 4. INTRODUCTION- RETAIL DESIGN Retail is one of the largest sector of business in the world. Retail store is a place where buying and selling of goods an services takes place. Retail design is a complex study which incorporates the management of people and the space.
  • 5. PRINCIPLES OF RETAIL DESIGN Principles of retail design 1. Attracting customers: 2. Inducing entrances 3. Organizing store spaces 4. Interior displays 5. conveniences 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
  • 6. HOW DO PEOPLE BUY 1. Traditional concept: Traditionally retailer’s were the king. They sell only what consumer asks for. Consumers were not using their all five senses mostly that time. That time there were counter systems. There were counters between retailer and consumers. Consumer only buy that product that he needs, there were less sales. 2. Modern concept: Now consumers have became the king. Consumers wants freedom while shopping. people are using their five senses while doing shopping. Shopping is an experience, customers now want more services to be provided to them. Sales have been increased.
  • 7. HOW DO PEOPLE BUY People love to look, window-shop, and buy. Shopping as an experience should provide fun, which in turn provides profits. Shopping is an activity that is part of our everyday lives. Whether we are shopping to feed ourselves, clothe ourselves or simply out of enjoyment, the places we choose to shop say something about our lifestyle, culture and interests. We create a relationship with the retail environment we feel comfortable with and reject spaces that do not match our image. A consumer connects his lifestyle with the product he/she sees in the window display and gets attracted towards it. A consumer wants freedom while shopping. They use all their senses while doing shopping. They like to listen music, smell fragrances in the store, watch the space, touch the things while doing shopping.
  • 8. HOW DO PEOPLE BUY How smells and sounds impact our shopping habits: Many retailers and product companies use gender- specific colors to trigger positive emotions or associations and compete for a sale. Sounds and smells can influence consumer purchasing decisions . SMELLS: Nobel Prize –wining research reveals that our sense of smell has tremendous power to elicit an emotional response and trigger memories from our past. It was found that the aroma increases the number of customers purchasing items and the amounts of their purchases. An earlier study using Nike shoes found that consumers desired the shoes more, and were willing to pay more, when the room had a mixed floral scent. SOUNDS: Music can have a big impact on consumer moods. One study found that when subjected to loud music, customers will spend less time in a store. Another interesting finding from a recent study was that customers actually shop longer when exposed to unfamiliar music. Just as department stores use different scents in certain departments, many use different music in some areas to appeal to varying demographics. Scents and fragrances are being used in stores Music systems are being used in stores
  • 9. During the study program of retail design, I have learnt various factors that should be paid attention to while designing a retail store. After studying retail design, I have been given a case study
  • 10. CASE STUDY I am suppose to design a store for a leading furniture and interior finishes brand Stanley. The space has to reflect the brand positioning, the range of products and brand image. The space has to be given due justice to the various sub categories of products, the space and the décor has to be modular and the space should have the ability to transform, move around and be utilized as per the product need. DESIGN BRIEF: The 2,109 sq. mts. Floor space is located on the ground floor of a premium mall in the upcoming suburbs of Pune. The façade and the store frontage are of prime importance to the client. The building is on a corner plot surrounded by two roads north and east side. The store is inside the mall and has no show window or external view.
  • 11. CASE STUDY As per the case study, the requirements of my client are: •Cashier and help desk station •Customer interaction area •Sofa set display •Display of 2-3 bedroom sets •Display of 25 sofas •Wardrobes •Collection series Space available for space planning
  • 12. Understanding a brand is one of the most important aspects of the retail designers' role. Stanley is a well-known brand. The consumer visiting the store will be upper class people so the space should be simple, pure, luxurious, as well as elegant.
  • 13. For designing a space we need to choose a concept and mood for that space. I have chosen contemporary concept for my design. As the contemporary look is very clean and simple.
  • 14. Contemporary CONCEPT I have chosen a concept of contemporary style for my design. Contemporary style is often defined by clean lines with a casual atmosphere, open spaces. CONCEPT BOARD
  • 15. RETAIL STORE DESIGN A successful store is one that is designed to merchandise in addition to look good. A store can be divided into two principle parts: the exterior which gives identification, encompasses the storefront, show windows, and displays, and the interior where the promise of the storefront display is delivered. Briefly stated the storefront initiates the sale, and the interior consummates it. Retail store Exterior of the store Interior of the store 1. Store front 2. Fascia sign 3. Marquee 4. Banners 5. Awnings 6. Walks and entry 7. Landscaping 8. Window display 1. Store layout 2. Transition zone 3. Circulation 4. Point o sale/cash desk 5. Ancillary or service area 6. Interior display 7. Wall 8. Flooring 9. ceiling
  • 16. EXTERIOR PRESENTATION Store Front Entrance Landscaping Walks And Entries Window Display Awnings Marquee Banners Fascia Sign
  • 17. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION The design of the exterior to a store is very important. It needs to attract the customer. How a store visually welcomes customer has to do a lot with whether or not they enter the store. Points to be considered under exterior presentations are: • Store front • Entrance • Facia sign • marquee • Banners • Awnings • Walks and entry • Landscaping • Window display
  • 18. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION STORE FRONT STORE FRONT The design of the shop’s front is very important. It needs to entice the customer in and give a glimpse of the products beyond the threshold. The shop front's main task is to communicate to potential customers the essence of the interior and to display a glimpse of what can be found on the other side of the glass. There are two types of shop front. These are Shop Front Contemporary Shop FrontTraditional Shop Front The design of traditional shop front has a sense of symmetry. Traditional shop front design includes panelling, use of arches, corbels, ornamentation etc. The look of contemporary shop front is clean, simple, with glazing reaching from floor to fascia panel.
  • 19. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION STORE FRONT I have chosen Contemporary Shop front. As contemporary store fronts has a clean and simple look. Fascia sign Glass panel Store front
  • 20. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION STORE FRONT I have chosen Contemporary Shop front. As contemporary store fronts has a clean and simple look. Aluminium Composite Sign Tray Flat tempered safety glass thickness:4–19
  • 21. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION ENTRANCE ENTRANCE There can be two ways of entrances for a store: Shop Entrance Entrance without doorsEntrance with doors
  • 22. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION ENTRANCE I have chosen entrance with doors : Hafele automatic sliding door Weight capacity: 150 kg Glass thickness:10-15 mm
  • 23. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION FASCIA SIGN FASCIA SIGN The sign above the shop window where the shop’s name is written is a fascia sign. There different types of signage are: ILLUMINATED BOX PAINTED BOX FRET CUT LOGO DETACHED FRET CUT LOGO
  • 24. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION FASCIA-SIGN STANLEY FURNITURE Font size : 12” Font style: times new roman Space between letters: Detached fret cut work 3 D Metal lettering Self illuminating letters
  • 25. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION MARQUEE Marquee is the special type of sign to display the name of the store. It can be sometimes a kind of permanent canopy at the entrance or on top of the building.
  • 26. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION MARQUEE Dimensions of marquee Fonts will be painted
  • 27. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION BANNERS Banners are used increasingly as an inexpensive, eye catching means of promotion. Banners can be hanged from flat poles or projected from the building. This leads to making the consumer feel that changes are taking place.
  • 28. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION BANNERS Temporary Banners to be hanged on pillar
  • 29. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION WALKS AND ENTRY Picture walking along the wall where the flat surface is plain glass door, as opposed to the protective feeling offered by walking under a porch or a canopy. Entrances that allow shoppers to come into a store without being aware of their entry is becoming more popular. Whenever we add an entry way it should be designed to blend with the architecture of living. I haven’t provided any other walkways or porches as store is situated inside the mall
  • 30. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION AWNINGS The awnings provide the customer with protection from weather and makes viewing of the window display more florescent. It adds appeal to the window display. A variety of styles of awnings are available – square, long, dome etc. I haven’t used awnings in my design as store is located inside the mall
  • 31. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION LANDSCAPING The proper landscaping increases the acoustics of place. Landscaping leads the customer’s eye to the focal point using color and texture to provide contrast and harmony. The essence of a good landscaping is simplicity. That means the designs that are easy to maintain.
  • 32. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION LANDSCAPING Planters will be kept on both the corners of the store front Alora rectangular planter box to be used.
  • 33. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION WINDOW DISPLAY The front side of the store, usually contains display windows, displaying items for sale or otherwise designed to attract customers to the store. Usually the term refers to larger windows in the front façade of the shop. These are designed primarily with the effect upon potential customers in mind
  • 34. RETAIL STORE DESIGN-EXTERIOR PRESENTATION WINDOW DISPLAY Points to be followed in designing window display are • Principles of design: The principles are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural element of design. These are: balance, proportion, emphasis, rhythm and harmony. • Colour rules that can improve display • Lighting I haven’t designed any window display for my retail store design

This is the conventional form of layout that utilizes walls and projections to create smaller spaces. It is a very economical plan to execute and can be adapted for any store. It pulls patron through the store to the rear. It is generally made for large stores which are 5,000 sq. feet or more and on one level. As per the case study given, I have to design a store for a leading furniture and interior finishes of brand stanley. To design any store we need to understand it is like a carte blanche(blank document) and to design it in a proper manner we need to device a plan which is suitable in utilizing space and should fulfill all the requirements. For solving this case study, I am considering straight floor plan as it is one of the most efficient and economical plan. A straight floor plan makes the most efficient use of both floor and wall space. Even commomly unused areas like corners, can be used. It is so extremely versatile. They accomodate all of major display styles .We can create any kind of feel with a straight floor plan.

CONCLUSION While studying Retail design, I explored different ways of displaying products, creative and unique ways of doing window display that can attract maximum customers along with that I also learned about colour influence on different backgrounds. To attract maximum customers its not only the exterior window display that plays the very important role but along with it the interiors, the plan, ambience, proper lighting are also important. Keeping all these in mind I devised the retail store layout with its power display and other two layouts.
