PHYSICS
 If light is traveling through a medium and
strike the surface of an opaque body a part
of it sent back in the same medium this
phenomena is know as reflection of light.
 When a ray of light approaches a smooth
polished surface and the light ray bounces
back, it is called the reflection of light
Kinds of Reflection
Regular Reflection Irregular Reflection
 Light travel in a straight in a homogeneous
medium. When light travelling in one
medium strike the surface of another
medium a part of it reflect in the another
medium mirror and highly polished dense
surface reflect light strongly and the image
that are farmed due to this characteristic of
reflection follow certain law.
 The incident rays OA is reflected from the
reflecting surface so the rays OB is formed is
called the reflected rays. The angle i and r the
angle which incident ray and reflected ray make
with ON. The normal N or perpendicular drawn to
mirror at point incident O. the angle AON and
NOB so formed, are called angle of incident i and
angle of reflection r .
 In diagram
 Incident ray (OA): The ray of light falling on the surface.
 Reflected ray(OB): The incident ray bouncing back in the same
medium after striking the reflecting surface.
 Point of incident (O): The point of the mirror surface where incident
ray strikes and reflected ray bounces off .
 Normal ray (N): It’s the line drawn perpendicular to the reflecting
surface at point of incidence.
 Angle of incidence (i): Angle between incident ray and normal ray .
 Angle of reflection (r): Angle between normal ray and reflection ray.
 Respectively
1. The angle of incident is equal to angle of
reflection.
Mathematically represent,
i.e m<i =m<r
2. The incident ray, reflection rays and normal
rays all lie on same plan
