INTRODUCTION
 Real time system is one in which the correctness of the computations not only
depends on their logical correctness but also on the time on which the result is
produced.
 Real-time communications (RTC) is a term used to refer to any live
telecommunications that occur without transmission delays. RTC is nearly instant
with minimal latency.
 Basic concepts:
 Jitter
 Timeliness
 Bandwidth
 Loss rate
TYPES OF NETWORK
In real time communication three types of networks are important:
 Controller Area Network
 Local Area Network
 Internet
CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK
 CANs are very small networks. These are typically used to connects the different
components of embedded controllers.
 The end-to-end length of a CAN is usually less than 50 meters.
LOCAL AREA NETWORK
 LAN is a network within a building or a campus and is usually privately owned.
 A LAN is used to connect a number of computers within an organization to share
data and other resources such as a printer, file etc.
INTERNET
 The Internet is a worldwide system of computer networks
TOPOLOGY
 Network topology is the topological structure of a network and may be depicted physically or
logically.
 There are following topologies
Bus TOPOLOGY
 In local area networks where bus topology is used, each node is connected to a single cable,
by the help of interface connectors.
STAR TOPOLOGY
 In local area networks with a star topology, each network host is connected to a central hub
with a point-to-point connection. So it can be said that every computer is indirectly
connected to every other node with the help of the hub.
MESH TOPOLOGY
 Every device has a dedicated point to point link to every other device.
HARD AND SOFT REAL TIME COMMUNICATION
Hard Real Time Communication
 Hard real time system is a real time system that must meet its deadlines.
 Hard real-time systems, the level of tolerance for a missed deadline is
extremely small or zero tolerance.
Soft Real Time Communication
 In soft real time system, missed deadline does not result in a system failures
but cost can rise in proportion to the delay depending on the application.
 the level of tolerance is non-zero
RESOURSE RESERVATION PROTOCOL
 The Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) is a transport layer protocol
designed to reserve resources across a network for quality of service (QoS)
using the integrated services model. RSVP operates over an IPv4 or IPv6 and
provides receiver-initiated setup of resource reservations
for multicast or unicast data flows.
 RSVP can be used by hosts and routers to request or deliver specific levels of
QoS for application data streams or flows.
MODE OF REAL TIME COMMUNICATION
HALF DUPLEX
 In half-duplex RTC, data can be transmitted in both directions on a single carrier or circuit
but not at the same time.
 Example : CB Radio, Walkie-takie
FULL DUPLEX
 In full-duplex RTC, data can be transmitted in both directions simultaneously on a single
carrier or circuit.
 Example: telephone, Social networking, video conffrencing

Real Time communication System

INTRODUCTION  Real time system is one in which the correctness of the computations not only depends on their logical correctness but also on the time on which the result is produced.  Real-time communications (RTC) is a term used to refer to any live telecommunications that occur without transmission delays. RTC is nearly instant with minimal latency.  Basic concepts:  Jitter  Timeliness  Bandwidth  Loss rate
  • 3. TYPES OF NETWORK In real time communication three types of networks are important:  Controller Area Network  Local Area Network  Internet
  • 4. CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK  CANs are very small networks. These are typically used to connects the different components of embedded controllers.  The end-to-end length of a CAN is usually less than 50 meters. LOCAL AREA NETWORK  LAN is a network within a building or a campus and is usually privately owned.  A LAN is used to connect a number of computers within an organization to share data and other resources such as a printer, file etc. INTERNET  The Internet is a worldwide system of computer networks
  • 5. TOPOLOGY  Network topology is the topological structure of a network and may be depicted physically or logically.  There are following topologies Bus TOPOLOGY  In local area networks where bus topology is used, each node is connected to a single cable, by the help of interface connectors.
  • 6. STAR TOPOLOGY  In local area networks with a star topology, each network host is connected to a central hub with a point-to-point connection. So it can be said that every computer is indirectly connected to every other node with the help of the hub. MESH TOPOLOGY  Every device has a dedicated point to point link to every other device.
  • 7. HARD AND SOFT REAL TIME COMMUNICATION Hard Real Time Communication  Hard real time system is a real time system that must meet its deadlines.  Hard real-time systems, the level of tolerance for a missed deadline is extremely small or zero tolerance. Soft Real Time Communication  In soft real time system, missed deadline does not result in a system failures but cost can rise in proportion to the delay depending on the application.  the level of tolerance is non-zero
  • 8. RESOURSE RESERVATION PROTOCOL  The Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) is a transport layer protocol designed to reserve resources across a network for quality of service (QoS) using the integrated services model. RSVP operates over an IPv4 or IPv6 and provides receiver-initiated setup of resource reservations for multicast or unicast data flows.  RSVP can be used by hosts and routers to request or deliver specific levels of QoS for application data streams or flows.
  • 9. MODE OF REAL TIME COMMUNICATION HALF DUPLEX  In half-duplex RTC, data can be transmitted in both directions on a single carrier or circuit but not at the same time.  Example : CB Radio, Walkie-takie FULL DUPLEX  In full-duplex RTC, data can be transmitted in both directions simultaneously on a single carrier or circuit.  Example: telephone, Social networking, video conffrencing
