Raymond Carver Cathedral Essay
Crafting an essay on the topic of "Raymond Carver's Cathedral" can be both challenging and
rewarding. On one hand, delving into Carver's intricacies demands a keen understanding of his
minimalist writing style, subtle narrative techniques, and the profound themes he explores. On
the other hand, exploring the nuances of "Cathedral" requires a deep analysis of characters,
symbolism, and the underlying emotions that Carver skillfully embeds in his work.
One difficulty lies in navigating the fine line between summarizing the plot and offering
insightful analysis. It's crucial to avoid falling into the trap of a mere summary, as the real depth
of Carver's work lies beneath the surface. Uncovering the layers of meaning demands a careful
examination of every word, every interaction, and every silence within the narrative.
Furthermore, discussing Carver's impact on literature and his unique contribution to the short
story genre adds another layer of complexity. Articulating the profound influence of "Cathedral"
on readers and scholars alike requires a balance of personal interpretation and a broader
exploration of literary criticism.
The challenge intensifies when attempting to connect Carver's life experiences to his work.
Unraveling the autobiographical elements in "Cathedral" adds depth to the analysis, but it also
requires a delicate approach to respect the artist's privacy and maintain the focus on the literary
aspects.
In essence, crafting a thoughtful essay on Raymond Carver's "Cathedral" demands not only a
solid grasp of literary analysis but also an appreciation for the subtle nuances that make his work
a masterpiece. It's a task that requires patience, critical thinking, and an ability to convey
complex ideas in a coherent and engaging manner.

Family Member Passing
The passing of a family member is transformational for most people. In this essay I
will reflect on two seemingly unrelated events which inspires me to apply for the
University of Portland s Doctor of Nursing Practice. Several years ago my fiancГ©s
mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and I assisted with the hospice
care she received. I experienced palliative care from the side of the caregiver and
familymember. Since she was under fifty years old it was a surprise for the family
to face her terminal diagnosis. My involvement with her passing was deeply
touching and enlightening. One of the many lessons was to ask questions and to care
for the patient and the family members. At the same time of my mother in law s
passing I was working

The Wife Of BathпїЅs Tale And Prologue And The Franklin
s Tale
In The Wife of Bath s Tale and Prologue and The Franklin s Tale, the central theme is
the relationship between man and woman. There are different views of this
relationship or marriage in these two tales: either the woman has the power in the
marriage granted from her husband, or the husband and wife grant each other power
in the marriageso neither dominates. The Wifeof Bath begins her prologue by
explaining that she considers herself an authority of marriage due to her
experience ; the Wife of Bath says, Experience, though no authority/Were in this
world, would be enough for me/To speak of woe that married life affords;/For since I
was twelve years of age, my lords,/Thanks be to God eternally alive,/Of husbands at

However, the Wife of Bath says she has her own interpretation of the Holy Scripture
and God s plan for her. She then goes on to say that men can only guess what Jesus
meant when He told the Samaritan woman that her fifth husband was not her
husband, and she asks exactly how many husbands she could have in a lifetime (20

use and the instruments are not just for urinating but for pleasure and procreation
(134). The Wife of Bath says, In wifehood I will use my instrument/As freely as my

Concerns of Bioterrorism
Issues/ Concerns of Bioterrorism US/Guam
What is Bioterrorism? What are the types of Bioterrorism? What issues or
concerns should we be aware of when talking about Bioterrorism? How is
Bioterrorism different from the United States and that of Guam? These are some
of the things people would think of and wonder when they hear the word
Bioterrorism. It s important to know the different steps or precautions that a
person can look into in order to prevent themselves from being a victim of
Bioterrorism. First things first, Bioterrorism is defined as the intentional release of
toxic biological agents to harm and terrorize civilians, in the name of a political or
other cause. The history of Bioterrorism goes way back. According to the Terrorism
Issues and Homeland Security, there have always been efforts to use germs and
disease as weapons. The reported risk has led the U.S. government to expend
immense resources for bio defense in the early part of the 21st century. According to
Right Diagnosis from health grades, there was a list of the different types of
Bioterrorism and they are: Anthrax, Salmonella, Glanders, Melioidosis, and Smallpox.
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore forming bacterium Bacillus
anthracis. This disease mostly occurs in wild and domestic animals such as:
antelopes, camels, cattle, goats, sheep, and other herbivores, but can occur in human
if they get in contact with the infected animal. Anthrax spores are a form of bacteria

What Is An Example Of Consumerism In Fight Club
In Fight Club, there are multitudes of examples of the culture industry and its effects
on the masses. As an audience, it can be seen from two different perspectives; the
first is in terms of the Narrator and the second is through Tyler Durden, a second
personality of the narrator who suffers from mental illness. The narrator lives an
empty life and tries to find meaning or purpose through the IKEA cataloguewhile
decorating his home. In turn, Tyler is the exact opposite he doesn t answer to
anybody, he does what he wants, when he wants and doesn t let anything or anyone
stop him. Evidently this is the version of himself that the narrator wants to be, as he
lives vicariously through Tyler, which he is unaware is his own imagination for the...

As an audience, throughout the film it is evident that there is a significant contrast
between the narrator and Tyler as they view many things differently. Just like the
Fight Club and the IKEA furniture, the narrator becomes obsessed with Tyler and
the life he leads. When Tyler is first introduced as a passenger on the airplane, the
narrator is immediately drawn to him in a way that is different than any other
person he has met. He feels a connection with him that he has not felt before, which
is why he calls him when his apartment burns and he loses all of his important
IKEA furniture. Tyler tells him it s just stuff (Fight Club) and the things you own
end up owning you (Fight Club), which completely contradicts everything the
narrator had previously believed about his home and the furniture. Through Tyler,
the narrator starts to lose his need for material objects when Tyler tells him Fuck
off with your sofa units and strine green stripe patterns, I say never be complete, I
say stop being perfect, I say let... let s evolve, let the chips fall where they may (Fight
Club), instead he focuses on the fighting and his friendship with Tyler since he has
finally found something that fills the void in his life and gives it meaning. Though it
may seem abstract that Tyler would fit into this argument, it all comes together at the
end of the film when the audience finds
Breast Ptosis Essay
Breast ptosis is the medical term for drooping/sagging breasts. Breasts begin to
droop for a variety of reasons, including aging, gravity, genetics, pregnancy, vigorous
exercising and weight loss. Today, advancements in the field of plastic surgery have
made addressing this issue possible. Dr. Farbod Esmailian is a double board certified
plastic surgeon in Los Alamitos who frequently performs mastopexy procedures
(breastlift surgery) to address sagging breasts. Dr. Esmailian s skill, experience and
expertise allow him to provide women in Orange County with more youthful looking
breasts.

An incision is made around the edge of the areola, down to the breast crease and then
along the breast crease itself (horizontally). Dr. Esmailian removes the excess skin
and uses internal sutures to lift, shape and support the remaining breast tissue. This
technique is used when a woman has severely drooping breasts. In addition, this
anchor incision technique is the preferred method when Dr. Esmailian is performing
a breast reduction and breast lift, simultaneously.
Crescent Lift To perform a crescent lift, Dr. Esmailian creates an incision that runs
along the outer edge of the upper portion of the areola. Typically, this incision is used
when a woman has minimal sagging. Moreover, this is the incision technique utilized
when a woman is having a breast augmentation with a lift.
Periareolar Lift A donut shaped incision is created along the edge of the areola. The
skin that remains is pulled inward and then reattached to the areola/nipple. This
approach is ideal for women who have mild/moderate sagging.
All the sutures that Dr. Esmailian uses are absorbable: Therefore, you will not need to
have them
Cocktail Parties In The 1950 s
On any given evening during the quintessential 1950s, shakers and movers of a
very unsquare world could be found gathered at cocktail parties in sleek suburbia
homes, ultra swank bachelor s pads, or mirrored lounge/living combos in
Anywhere, USA . While the libations flowed, those edgy revelers were trying out
their well rehearsed and choreographed, goo goo eyed social moves on one another,
intent on making an impression. Other party goers were working the room, culling
for a new client or perhaps clinching a huge business deal the company execs had
awaited for months. The way out vibes of a 1950s cocktail party... Imagine if you
will, the sultry lounge music of Stan Kenton, George Shearing, Nat King Cole or

Two years is a short time, yet these past two years have somehow seemed longer
than past decades. The history of monarchs is mainly the history of delusional
people. We must not let them destroy our businesses. They will either be the french

France and together we must protect our businesses! United we stand and together
we ll conquer! yelled the bakers. As we march to versailles, we must remember
that death is a solution to all problems. No monarchy no problems! exclaimed
Leonardo. After five hours of marching, the group of five thousand arrived at the
king s palace in Versailles. As they crowd stormed the castle, the noise they created
woke the king and queen. They tried to flee the palace, however they were too
slow and the mob caught them. They were put in carts and taken back to Paris. As
they were being hauled off to Paris, Marie noticed that the health initiative had
worked wonders. The people on the streets of Paris were looking much better than
they had months before, however the thought of her possibly of dying overwhelmed
her and she couldn t stop thinking about it. Two days later the men threw Marie in
an open cart with bars on it and rode her to her execution. The citizens of Paris

A Summary OfI Wandered Lonely As A Cloud
Lost. What a standard term. One that is often associated with a child wandering off
in a grocery store, or somebody taking the wrong turn and not arriving at the correct
destination. But the trouble is that it is hardly ever associated with anything deeper,
such as the human soul. Yet the reality is, everybody s soulis indeed a little bit lost.
And if not lost, at least diverted to a path of pure monotony that drives them to forget
the importance of the little things in life. An example of this concept is the poem I
Wandered Lonely as a Cloudby William Wordsworth. At the beginning of the
poem, the speaker is wandering through life without purpose. He is simply living a
life that he no longer feels any form of connection towards. But then he comes
across a field of dancing daffodils and his perspective changes entirely to one of
pure joy and ease with his life. Through his application of simile, symbolism, and
personification, in his work, the speaker makes his poem far more meaningful. The
use of these devices helps to shape the poem s central idea, that is when one stops
roaming aimlessly through everyday life and pays attention, they can discover the
true beauties that are present in the world and learn to appreciate them a little bit
more.
One of the main figurative language elements that the speaker uses within his poem
is a simile. The title of the poem itself, as well as the first line are repeating similes.
The speaker uses this component in the lines I wandered
Case Study Of Walt Disney

he created a unique and completely new destination unlike any of its time. Since
then Walt Disney Parks and Resorts (WDPR) has become a world leader, opening 6
Disneyland s with 12 theme parks and 52 resorts across North America, Europe, and
Asia. The Disneyland involved in this case study was the second built in Asia, Hong

inclusion of sharkfin soup in the Chinese banquet style reception of their Fairy Tale
Wedding package. Although, culturally this dish is a Chinese staple HKD faced
severe backlash from environmentalists worldwide including Hong Kong. The reason
for conducting their program was because of protests and worldwide criticism from
environmental groups. Disney s program was reactive because the addition of shark
fin soupin their Chinese wedding reception banquet was an attempt to incorporate a
cultural mainstay which obviously rebounded resulting in their reacting to criticism
instead of anticipating it. It s unclear from the case study whether HKD researched
this topic before it became an issue but it is evident they did research this topic
during the campaign consisting of secondary research that was regurgitated as part
of their program. Although in hindsight it is hard to believe HKD would have been
oblivious to what seemed like a very controversial dish in Asia. The publics for HKD

The Eyes Of Mahatma Gandhi, Harriet Tubman, And

Are human rights prominent enough to be defended? In the eyes of Gandhi,
Harriet Tubman, and Oprah, they are. Gandhi was a man who wanted to end racial
justice in all parts of the world, while Harriet Tubman wanted to help guide the
slaves from the South to the North so that they can live a free life. However, instead
of taking a more direct approach, Oprah Winfreyused a public method. These three
passionate individuals stood up to enact change by fighting for human rightsand
staying persistent and determined. Mahatma Gandhi enacted change by striving to
end racial injustice. He did this to show that anyone of any race or religion should
have equal rights. According to Satyagraha: Gandhi s Legacy , it states, Gandhi
developed his philosophy of Satyagraha, or resistance through non violent civil
disobedience to defend his rights and the rights of all Indians and non whites
(Studysync Editors). Gandhi himself had been faced with discrimination. However,
instead of ignoring the situation, Gandhi took a stand and did what was right to
ensure equality among all people. The Studysync Editors stay, As had been the case
in the southern United States, Indians and other non white people were forced to
ride at the back of trains, use separate facilities, and were treated as second class
citizens. Gandhi believed that this was wrong . With his opinions in mind, Gandhi
decided to get his beliefs out by starting non violent protest. As the leader he was, he
lead many protest that
The Pros And Cons Of The Dream In America
People have always been born in various countries with diverse family background.
Some relations have higher salary than poor kin. Humans have different degrees of
education. So, there will be a gap between the rich and the poor. Although,
Americans have diverse dreams, some people want to be a scientist, investor, or
CEO. They should be aggressive and hard working, if people always diligence that

born in America, the land of opportunity, can achieve countless wealth. Meanwhile, in
the following paragraph, I will give more points to support my thought. Some
American are destitute, and they always live in homeless shelters. Perhaps, some
children live in this place, where they spent their childhood. For example, Eric and
Christopher had both spent their formative years in homeless shelters, and they

Mark Antony s Assassination Analysis
Being politically assassinated is really no easy task to do. For example: During
the presidential debate that happened at the Al Smith Dinner for a charity on
October 20th, 2016 there was a heated battle between Donald Trump and Hillary
Clinton. The two politicians were roasting each other back and forth in a jokingly
matter but in the audience s eyes, it seemed like a direct attack between one
another. One of the lines which Trump said, shocked many of the guests who
attended the charity that day. Hillary is so corrupt, she got kicked off the Watergate
Commission. And going into Clinton s own speech, she also went as far as to
humiliate Trump in her own way. Donald wanted me drug tested before last night s
debate. Look I got to tell... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Urban Politics Of The Brazil
Urban politics of poverty in Brazil have been highly publicized over the past few
years. In large part, this is due to capital spending on the creation and renovation of
stadiums for the World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in 2016. Imagine
waking up every morning and walking outside to slum like conditions. Right next to
those slum like conditions are brand new athletic stadiums that will primarily used for
about a month. It must be infuriating seeing public money be spent on flashy
buildings, meanwhile, homes, parks, schools, and more are not given nearly enough
funding that is required for complacency. Yet, much of what an individual sees may
be interpreted differently. These rundown favelas impact are what people call home.

Urban politics in Brazil happen to be the exact reason why housing, transportation,
inner city crime, and more happen to occur in the favelas. Brazil is suffering from
inconsistent political agendas which ultimately, has created collective effort by
citizens to riot against uneven development. All throughout Brazil they built new
state of the art stadiums, meanwhile there was a massive issue of poverty occurring.
Favelas in Brazil can be found throughout the country. Most famously, Rochina, a
favela in Rio De Janeiro sits massively entrenched on a hill in between a mountain
range. Just below Rochina lies Rio s developed downtown area. MaracanГЈ, a local
stadium in Brazil that was subject to much criticism, just miles away from Rochina
was renovated heavily to be the standard for all stadiums. Accord to NPR, further
outcry embellished when a brand new stadium in Manaus was built. Manaus is
located in the middle of the Amazonas state (in the Amazon Rainforest) and it is
only accessible by boat or plane. That is how far out of the way this city is. Yet,
Brazil decided to invest in a brand new stadium in the middle of the Amazon
Rainforest rather than invest in its people. There is increasing hope that the arena
will draw future investors, businesses, and home developers/renovators to the area.
However, it is unlikely that this occurs quickly if at all. Amazonas is amongst the
poorest states in Brazil, which infers that

The Company of Wolves , by Angela Carter, is an evolved form of the typical

stories are about a little girl with a red cape going to her grandmother s house, who
lives in the middle of the woods. As she is walking to her grandmother s house, she
encounters a hungry wolf. She tells the wolf where she is going, then the wolf goes
ahead of her, eats the grandmother and then eats Little red. Some of the differences
in the Carter s story is the wolf, Little Red herself, the compass and when she sleeps

The purpose of this report is to provide information on the Single European Act
(SEA) for a Business Seminar on the Single market. Throughout this report, I will
analyse and evaluate the Single European Act, the workings of the internal market
and how far any recent changes have succeeded. 2.0FINDINGS 2.1Background
The SEA was created in 1986, with the aim that by 1992 there would be a Single
market. It was developed from the Treaty of Rome 1957 which established the
common market (later known as the internal market) between the then six EEC
members. This was a major sign of European integration; removing trade barriers
and creating free movement of people, goods, capital and services and involved a
Customs Union. The Single market involves 27 EU countries and the European
Economic Area which includes Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein; Switzerland has
bilateral agreements within the Single market. 2.2Priorities of European Commission
The European Commission aims to maximise the potential of the internal market by
eliminating physical, technical and tax barriers to boost growth and employment.
2.2.1 The Four Freedoms The Four Freedoms refers to the free movement of goods,
services, people and capital between membership countries. Below is a model for the
Four Freedoms (appendix 1). 2.3 What the Single market means for Business The

Pros And Cons Of Cord Blood Banking
country are now recommending collecting the cord blood. There s only two things
that (you can) potentially buy your new baby that are lifesaving: One is a good car
seat and the other is cord blood. Dr. Marra Francis, Ob/Gyn, CBR medical
consultant gives his medical and personal opinion of collecting cord blood.
Cord Blood banking also has it s limitations. Researchers have discovered that it is
actually harder for adults to be treated with cord blood than bone marrow. Children
usually receive one unit of cord blood because their small bodies only need a small
amount. Adults however need more than the one unit of blood that children receive
because their bodies are so much bigger. According to eurostemcells.org there are

Sick children whose parents did bank their blood sometimes cannot be used
(Moniger, 67). Many blood banks do not tell parents that if their children may
develop a cancer or a disease early on in their life that they may not be able to use
the cord blood because the blood may be diseased. This risk is one of the main
risks that deter parents from paying the cost for banking. Another negative aspect
of cord blood collection and banking is that if a mother who delivers twins would
like to collect and store her children s cord blood, she would not be able to. Both
babies may have a different cord tissue type and they may be mixed during the
collection process making them virtually useless (The Truth about Cord Blood
Banking Lucie s list, n.d.) . Also, If the mother ever had cancer, she can not have her
child s blood collected. This is because doctors do not want the possibility of the cord
blood to be contaminated with the cancer which in turn will contaminate the patient

Summary Of The Second Sex By Simone De Beauvoir
In The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir questions the idea held in society that
those who live simpler lives with no foreseeable challenges are inherently content
and satisfied in their lives. Specifically, she disagrees with the idea that women
who are oppressed, and thus, due to their lack of opportunities and freedoms, must
lead lives that the patriarchal society makes available to them, are happier than the
women whose freedom brings them challenges and shortcomings. De Beauvoir
claims that we cannot assume someone is happy from what we see, and we cannot
simply assume happiness means to that person what it does to us; it is not too
clear just what the word happy really mean and still less what true values it may
mask. There is no possibility measuring the happiness of others, and it is always
easy to describe as happy the situation in which one wishes to place them, (de
Beauvoir 261). She continues to discuss this idea of seeing one as happy in the
situation the observer views as ideal, specifically the non working woman stripped
of her rights, whose lack of purpose and duties is seen as peaceful happiness, in
particular those who are condemned to stagnation are often pronounced happy on
the pretext that happiness consists in being at rest, (de Beauvoir 261). This is not to
say a woman s happiness cannot be found being a housewife, but one cannot assume
what will bring women joy and fulfillment, because all people are different with
varying wants and needs. Women need all the opportunities available and full
liberation in order to be able to find their happiness, if it can be found. Sara Ahmed
says, Feminismdoes not guarantee what we will find through this expansion of
bodily horizons. It simply opens up the places where we can look, (Ahmed 70).
Ahmed goes on to explain how happiness may not even be a healthy goal, as often
women are expected to give up much in order to be able to find a happiness that is
likely unachievable. Ahmed also discusses the 2002 film The Hours, which tells the
stories of three women living in different eras all struggling with their happiness in
their vastly different lives. All three women experience other people in their lives
telling them that they should be happy
The Social Influence Of Hip Hop Music
In the last three decades, Hip Hop music has evolved into one of the largest youth
influencers. Uplifting the youth, Hip Hop provides a voice to a group of people
trying to deliver a message. Whether it is politcally, culturally, racially, or socially,
the music speaks for people with a variety of beliefs and passions. Hip Hop and
Rap music espands people s horizons, and promotes the idea of equality between
interacial communities. The Hip Hop music movements emergence can be traced
back to the 1970 s in South Bronx, New York. DJ Kool Herc, a Jamaican born DJ,
kickstarted the movement and laid the groundwork for everything associated with
Hip Hop musictoday. Herc created toasting, which can be described as speaking over

As the genre of Hip Hop and Rap spread around the world, it became a social and
cultural platform for artists. Most people assume that it has the biggest influence on
the black community in America, but the music has spread far beyond that specific
audience. Critics describe Hip Hop music as homophobic, racist, vulgar, and
violent. Tricia Rose contradicts this statement perfectly: Rappers lyrics really do
offer gripping tales of loss, sorrow, exploitation, rage, confinement, hopelessness,
and despair about conditions that are denied in the larger society ( The Role Of Hip
Hop ). It is imporant to see past the innapropriate langauge and listen to the actual
message of the song, because in most scenarios the message outweighs the vulgar
words.
As soon as this music genre became popular among teens and young adults, a
plethora of songs came out with important social messages. In the society we live
in today, suicide is a prominent issue. Very recently, three very popular artists
teamed up to use their following to promote the message of suicide prevention.
Logic, Alessia Cara, and DJ Khalid produced a song called 1 800 273 8255, the
title being a suicide prevention hotline number. To prevent contraversy on the new
release Logic released a statement: In [this song] we hear a person at the end of their

Agglomeration Of New Caledonia
Political debates usually focus on mobilising the other side to commit to a preferred
course of action, thereby not only ignoring an apparent opposition in ideological
viewpoints, but also the fact that sharing a common official language and common
institutions does not necessarily entail a consensus on the issue at hand. As a sui
generis collectivity in the Pacific, New Caledonia is currently involved in a decisive
debate on self determination with one of the most powerful former colonising nations
in Europe. The negotiation process between New Caledonia and France pertaining to
the full or partial independence of the island agglomeration remains ongoing. A
referendum will be organised to decide upon a final outcome in the second half...

106). The present study aims to partially redress this imbalance. Instead of
privileging literary texts or explicitly political discourse, uttered at the higher levels
of society, grassroots level discourse will be given all the attention it deserves as the
result of political interaction and the emphasis will be on language as it is used by
all of the interactants in the context of the New Caledonian independence debate. The
project aims to explore the relations between discourse, power and social interaction.
Consequently, the audience of the political speeches, radio interviews or public
letters, the recipients, equally deserve consideration, especially as a group that not
only reacts to the discourse, but, at the same time, critically evaluates the
argumentation and then responds to it. All of the groups involved make attempts at
convincing the other groups of the validity of their propositions. Other analytical
approaches to discourse that focus on the social aspects of dialoguing equally
understand discourse to be a form of social interaction (van Dijk, 1985; Boden
Zimmennan, 1991). Since it is mainly through the exchange of discursive acts that a
final consensus is reached, the focus of the study is on the social practice of
deliberation or argumentation, rather than the social actors themselves.

Evils of Money and Industrialization in the Film, The Wages of Fear The messages
or themes of The Wages of Fear are fairly easy to understand. Among them all, the
strongest of these messages is that, simply, money and greed can corrupt and even
kill. This message is clear in several aspects of the film. For example, the plot of the
story is that several men take on an incredibly dangerous task, knowing they could
die, because the completion of the task could bring them a large sum of money. Of
course, the incentivebehind their choice can be attributed to the local American oil
company that is offering the money, which controls the local economy in the first
place (the implication is that these men would not have to... Show more content on

One could argue that the characters own lust for money and material objects caused
them to take the job transporting the nitroglycerine, and it is their own fault for
what happened. After all, when the American oil company went in search of
people to hire for the task, they made it very clear what the dangers were, and were
entirely honest with the drivers about the possible consequences that they could
face. If this argument is to hold fast then, the reasons that the four men, Mario,
Bimba, Luigi, and Jo, accepted the job must be explored more closely. Was it only
the lust for money that caused them to put themselves in danger, or did they have
other motives? To answer this question, the first two characters that should be
looked at are Jo and Mario. These are the two characters who undergo the largest
character development throughout the film, and who have the most in depth reasons
for putting themselves in danger. First, there is Jo. He is the older career criminal
/gangster/ tough guy. His life revolves around portraying an image of being couth,
and projecting his superior ego on other people. Mario is the younger tough guy, still
trying to make a reputation for himself, who believes that by hooking up with Jo he

Religion During The Civil Rights Movement
The civil rights movement was made up to give African Americans freedom that
white citizens loved and took for granted, like eating in specific restaurants, voting,
and going to churches that they wanted to worship in. African Americans suffered
from beatings and arrest as a part of their everyday lives. The church gave African
Americans hope and was a religious safe haven. During the time of slavery ancestors
of African Americans looked to God for freedom which is why the love of religion is
so strong. African AmericanChristians saw the church as a safe place where they

Persuasive Essay On Energy Drinks
Imagine you are in bed and remember that your english essay is due at seven in the
morning the next day. You get out of bed and what do you do to get yourself awake
to be able to concentrate. Teens reach for a sugar rush fuel source found in an energy
drink, but how do you decide on which brand to buy. Many are influenced through
advertisement that they see daily, through websites, commercials, billboards, radio,
and many others sources. These advertisements persuade people who would normally
not buy the product, to buy it. A study in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology (2006)
showed ten different brands of energy drinks with caffeinelevels from 0 141 mg per
serving. Also, an average eight ounce cup of coffeehas 65 to 120 mg of caffeine, tea
has 20 to 90 mg and soft drinks have 20 to 40 mg per serving (Analytical
Toxicology). There is no wonder why there is such a huge appeal to people who need
energy because of the high caffeine level. Furthermore, there was a random survey of
496 college students attending a state university in the Central Atlantic region of the
United States, fifty one percent of participants (253 people) reported consuming
greater than one energy drinkeach month (Malinauskas). This confirms that there is a
huge market for energy drinks and teens make up a big part of the targeted audience.
As more people drink these products it s imperative to stay informed about them. It is
easy to be lured into buying and drinking products solely from there advertisements.
To know how a product will affect your body you need to analyze their
advertisements. Although, each brand has its strengths and weaknesses, the ideal
advertisement for energy drinks includes being able to clearly communicate the result
on you, produces confidence and should be entertaining.
To be able to analyze this criteria the reader and evaluate need to start on the same
premises. First, a persuasive advertisement needs to clearly communicate the result of
drinking an energy drink. This tells the reader what they will experience when they
drink the product whether it be energetic, or makes them feel focused. This is
imperative because consumers should be informed about what they are doing to their
body. The famous slogan Red
Ancient Greek Medicine Essay
The direct relationship between one and the ability to restore one s body to its
original state of health may never be fully comprehended. The fields of medicine and
health are two most paramount features affecting the daily lives of all beings.
Throughout recorded history, various cultures concoct their own methods of
alternative medicinefor treatment and therapy which is then relied on by todays
nations. Medicine in its earliest times begins with the ancient civilizations
assimilation with the world around and their beliefs on how things function. Ancient
Greek medicine may have began with spiritual beliefs but Greek practitioners had
steered the medical profession in the right direction for modern times.

The cures would then later be self administered or carried out by resident priests in
the more complex cases. Thankful patients often left votive offerings at the site,
sometimes depicting the body part which had been cured. The site also had a 6000
seat theatre (340 330 BCE) which is the best preserved theatre in Greece and still
in use today (Cartwright). The legacy of the ancient Greek world on medical
practice have been tremendous. In the Hippocratic Corpus which is roughly 70
medical works written between 450 and 350 B.C , disease was thought to be
caused by isonomia, the predominance of one of the 4 bodily humors, which are
Blood, Black bile, Yellow bile and Phlegm (Gill). Thus developing the Theory of the
Four Humors created by Hippocrates. According to Gill, each humor is identified
with one of the four seasons, universal element and certain qualities. Black bile is
associated with Autumn and with earth and is to be cold and dry, while blood is
correlated spring and air and is to be hot and moist. Yellow bile is identified with
summer and fire and is to be hot and dry, as phlegm is linked with Winter and water
and is to be cold and moist. Too much earth made one melancholic, too much air
made one sanguine, too much fire made one choleric and too much water made one
phlegmatic. As the first step to keeping one healthy, a shrewd Hippocratic physician

Lin, 2009 Critical Analysis

Nowadays, there is a lot of scientist and professional who want to learn English to

A lot of academic readers may agree with him because writing in short paragraph will
make reading easier.
III Non Metaphorical Usage: almost all languages use metaphors to explain
meaning. Trujillo Seaz(2003), cited in Linn(2009) claimed that it might be used in
high levels in the UK media and the American business communication. On the other
hand, academic writers try not to use metaphors that much in their published
academic papers. According to Linn(2009) the Oriental, Semitic and Romance
/Russian do not make that difference in academic writing. People may argue that
probably it is better to make the published paper as easy as they could, so it will be
understandable for the majority of the readers. Others could argue that maybe the

professional academic readers.

Attracting passengers who would have otherwise traveled by car or bus, Southwest
was able to maintain high levels of plane utilization, thereby keeping its operating
costs low enough to support its discounted fares.
A key component of Southwest s ability to manage costs was its reliance on a single
type of plane the Boeing 737. * Over time, Southwest s ground and flight personnel
became very familiar with the 737; this decreased the airline s average turnaround
time between landing a plane and putting it back into the air. * This efficiency,
combined with the shrewd use of fuel hedges, buoyed Southwest s profits.
* Attempts by competitors to mimic Southwest s LCC model typically were
unsuccessful, as demonstrated by the infamous rise and fall of no frills People

airlines including Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines to create
LCC subsidiaries during the 1990s.

The Life of Hayao Miyazaki
The Story of My Search
When we were first assigned this paper, I was stumped. My interests span
throughout a broad variety of topics, and because of this, I did not really know
where to start. I have long been intrigued by the world of Japanese animation, and
recently, I happened upon a hard copy of my favorite film from when I was a child:
Howl s Moving Castle. All of the nostalgic memories I have of watching it when I
was a child flooded my mind, reminding me of how much I admire the artwork in
the movie. I began to brainstorm ideas related to this. In the end, I boiled it down to a
biography of Hayao Miyazaki (the director) and the strong themes in his movies.
Combining the two lead me to decide on addressing how his personal life influenced
the persuasive themes and symbols he conveys through his beautiful art.
My first step to approaching this challenge was to go to the library and research
sources that would be useful in completing this paper. After a few hours I had a
written list of dependable articles and websites that pertained to his movies.
Unfortunately, no credible source discussed his life. By chance, I managed to
acquire a book discussing Miyazaki s art and also providing a history of his career;
however, this made my list too plentiful, so I chose the facts most relevant to my
specific topic.

Essay On Historic Properties
I m really tired of hearing that the interior of historic buildings is not important. First
of all, we are talking about BUILDINGS and not façades or any other part of the
building that happens to have an important architectural feature. Obviously, the
façade is the most prominent part of any building and the portion that usually
receives more attributes, but nevertheless, a buildingis a building and not 20% of it.
For those who are not familiar with the Secretary of the Interior s Standards, I will
try to explain the rules that unfortunately most preservationists don t get or are not
aware of (yes, most said preservationists are only advocates and not qualified
professionals). According to the National Register Bulletin How to ... Show more

Therefore, altering the portions that are not visible from the public right of way is
an acceptable practice recommended by the Secretary of the Interior s Standards.
ALTERATIONS, UPGRADINGS, and ADDITIONS are allowed to make these
properties economically feasible but, DEMOLITION (partial or total) is a
completely different story and NEVER recommended by a serious professional.
On the other hand, individually listed properties have significance for what they
represent apart from any other property and usually are landmarks that contribute to
the sense of place of the neighborhood, city, county, state, and sometimes, nation as
well. These properties are individually significant and MUST be considered as a
whole, exterior and interior, especially if they are (or will be) accessible to the
general public.
Since the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, professionals MUST leave personal
opinions out of their recommendations and follow the proper protocol. There is
never a too simple or too modest component in terms of historic significance, and if a
portion of the individually significant property has been altered before, the
recommended treatment would be RESTORATION or RESCONTRUCTION and
NEVER DEMOLITION.
Furthermore, it is very unfortunate that government agencies shifted sides with
regards to protecting historic properties. Early preservation efforts in the United States
counted with the action of governmental bodies to protect historic resources relevant

Spectacle and threacality are the use of light and shados to create a spot light

attribute of the stylistic period is human drama. The man standing behind Christ

Friedan says that this change in education arrested girls in their emotional
development at a young age, because they never had to face the painful identity
crisis and subsequent maturation that comes from dealing with many adult
challenges.[11] Chapter 8: Friedan notes that the uncertainties and fears during
World War II and the Cold War made Americans long for the comfort of home, so
they tried to create an idealized home life with the father as breadwinner and the
mother as housewife.[13] Friedan notes that this was helped along by the fact that
many of the women who worked during the war filling jobs previously filled by men
faced dismissal, discrimination, or hostility when the men returned, and that
educators blamed over educated, career focused mothers for the maladjustment of
soldiers in World War II. Yet as Friedan shows, later studies found that overbearing
mothers, not careerists, were the ones who raised maladjusted children.[11] Chapter
9: Friedan shows that advertisers tried to encourage housewives to think of
themselves as professionals who needed many specialized products in order to do
their jobs, while discouraging housewives from having actual careers, since that

Guinea Pig By Guinea Pigs
Once upon a time, on the coastal cliffs and rocky shores of Animal Island, there
lived a sea guinea pig. He was young and curious and loved adventure. He would go
diving down to the ocean floor to discover the colorful fish that swam through the
bright sea plants, and he loved to explore the small underwater caves that dotted the
edges of the reef.
One day Guinea Pig was basking in the sunshine. It was almost always cloudy where
he lived, and it was a rare day when the sun was out. As Guinea Pig sunned himself
on the shore, his eyes scanned the great, vast ocean. It was so big, and he was so
curious. He wondered if there were different creatures and fish out there. What if
there were other plants and sea animals that he didn t know about? ... Show more

But Guinea Pig knew it wasn t safe to go far into the sea, for many of his friends
had warned him of the dangerous and terrible Octopus that lived beyond the edge of
the reef. But Guinea Pig had never seen Octopus, and he thought that maybe his
friends were just making it up.
Octopus probably isn t even real, He told himself. I ll be fine. And he stood up and
began to walk down to the water s edge.
But strangely enough, he couldn t see the gold anymore! It no longer shined and
glittered in the sun.
Oh, the sun is setting, Guinea Pig thought, disappointed. It s not shining on the gold
anymore, so I ll have to wait until tomorrow, when I can see the gold again.
Guinea Pig could hardly sleep that night. His heart was filled with excitement and
greed. He wished he could go get the gold right now, but at night he wouldn t be
able to see the treasure, and he would get lost in the ocean if he didn t know where
he was going.
I ll get the gold first thing tomorrow morning, Guinea Pig thought. Tomorrow, I will
be rich! Tomorrow, I will be King! And he laughed and closed his eyes, falling into
a dream filled slumber. In his dreams he was King of Animal Island, and he told
everyone what to do. Everyone was servant to him. They catered to his every wish
and worshipped him because he was so rich.
Morning finally broke, and Guinea Pig quickly ate breakfast and headed down to the
waterfront. It was another sunny day, and the sun shone brightly on the gold.

simple yet covers little and excruciating way. Being an honest individual in the family

The Folly of RenГ© Descartes Discourse on Method and Meditations on First
Philosophy
In order to embark on his quest for truth, Descartes first devises his four rules
which should serve as a solid foundation for all else that he comes to understand.
Those rules are here evaluated in terms of what they fail to take into consideration.
The rules are examined individually and consecutively, and are therefore also
reiterated in order to be clear about them. Furthermore, the approach of using these
rules is also analyzed to some degree. Ultimately, however, it is my conjecture that
Descartes four rules are not as solid a foundation as he claims, but fail to consider
key issues which are noted herein.
Descartes first rule deals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For him, the method that teaches one to follow the true order and to enumerate
exactly all the circumstances of what one is seeking contains everything that gives
certainty to the rules of arithmetic (12).
Still, the notion of one s existence as proven by thought is not something which can
be measured and translated into a numerical quantity. In fact, most fundamental
concepts and their corresponding emotions that make up human life, such as love, are
neither indubitable nor quantifiable, though are still held as being true, sometimes
more than anything else.
This leads me to find that the very first of Descartes rules is a shaky foundation at
best. It asks for an acceptance of indubitable truth, and only that truth. But if this is to
be indeed held as a standard, then nothing could actually be accepted with certainty.
The second [rule], to divide each of the difficulties I would examine into as many
parts as possible and as was required in order better to resolve them. (11)
The basis of this second rule appears to be an endeavor to take a claim and examine
it from all possible perspectives, and to test it against all possible situations. Neither
of which is, in effect, possible. One could spend an entire lifetime looking at all the
possible situations in which a claim could be contested and would not even come
close to revealing
Carbon Dioxide And The Effects Of Climate Change
Carbon Dioxide and the Effects of Climate Change
At the 2016 Oscar awards, Leonardo DiCaprio received a long awaited first Oscar,
only to mention climate change as, the most urgent threat facing our entire species.
Talk of climate change has become more prevalent in recent years, but has not done
so unjustified. Global ambient air temperatures have risen at alarming rates and are
projected to rise up to 6 degrees Celsius by the year 2100. Such drastic changes in the
air temperature will not only have an effect on heat distribution, but could prove
disastrous to individual ecosystems and the overall biosphere of planet earth. Many
ecosystems are a delicate balance of plant and animal life and, when altered by
slight margins, can harm carbon cycles and imperiled species. Furthermore,
evaporation and precipitation rates will also morph over time to match the changing
of the seasons, further antagonizing severe weather patterns. In combination, all of
these side effects of carbon emissions provide a bleak future for the earth and all of
its inhabitants, and if these problems are not addressed properly we could all suffer
the consequences for future generations to come. Research suggests that the harmful
effects of carbon emissions must be addressed aggressively because many species
are suffering in number as well as quality of life, weather patterns and rainfall are
behaving more erratically, and the overall temperature of the earth continues to rise at
an alarming rate.

My Special Day Essay
Son, we are moving to a different country is a statement my father said on April
8th, 2012 which I hold dear to my heart till this very day not because it was my
birthday but because it was a day that altered my life forever and made me who I
am today. April 8th was celebrated quietly in the Hallo household annually but
during the year 2012, there was a modification. I myself could feel it because usually
during my special day I was always the first to wake up but the year 2012 came with
a change, I was the last to wake up that day which was rare on any given day for I am
the type of person who admires repetition especially involving the time I wake up
because I stand for a saying Norman Vincent Pealeonce said Repetition of the same
thought or physical action develops into a habit which repeated frequently enough
becomes an automatic reflex . Even though my sleeping time was distorted I didn t
let it distract me from my objective of the day which was to have fun. I took a
shower and had some breakfast. I later left for Sunday school and on my way to
church, I was showered with birthday wishes which made me appreciate friends and
familyeven more. I arrived at Sunday school full of joy and excitement for the 8th of
April is a day of joyfulness in my life.
However, after my Sunday school lesson concluded I started my walk back home to
see what my family had planned for me but little did I know family friends had
ordered a party to be thrown. I was in shock
The Contribution Of French Music During The Decades
After...
Francis Poulenc was born Jan. 7, 1899 in Paris. France. Poulenc, a composer who
made an important contribution to French music in the decades after World War I,
remains one of the best composers of the 20th century. Throughout his career Poulenc
composed orchestral, chamber music, ballets, concertos, film scores, and opera, as
well as powerful choral and sacred music, but only three works for piano and
woodwinds.
Poulenc grew up in a wealthy family whom intended Poulenc for a business career
and did not allow him to enrol at a music college. Therefore, he was largely self
educated musically although he study for a time with pianist Ricardo ViГ±es.
Compositionally, Poulenc soon came under the influence of Erik Satie, under whose

Wasn t that the case with Mozart Schubert? Poulenc s music was driven by a passion
to create melodic variations, against tradition, using old fashioned harmonies. During
this time he was particularly interested in religious music and composed some works
in 1936 and onwards.
In addition to composing, Poulenc was an accomplished pianist. He was particularly
praised for his partnerships with the baritone Pierre Bernac, his performing friend and
vocal writing tutor. The group toured in Europe and America, making recordings at
most performances. Coincidentally, he was among the first composers to see the
importance of the gramophone, and he recorded extensively from 1928 onwards.
In his later years, and for decades after his death, Poulenc had a reputation as a
humorous, lightweight composer. This perception often left his religious music
overlooked. Personally, he suffered fits of manic depression, characterized by deep
sadness and doubt followed by maniacal states of optimism. French critic Claude
Rostand remarked that: In Poulenc there is something of the monk and something of
the rascal .
The Trio is one of Poulenc s most popular chamber works for winds. While
composing the Trio in Cannes in 1926, Poulenc took the advice of Ravel, his

Swot Analysis Of Qvc
QVC was launched in 1986 by Jason Segel to rival the existing Home Shopping
Network (Dess, McNamara, Eisner, 2016). Segel strived to create a family friendly
network that sold sophisticated goods. Within the first year of business, QVC was
televised in over 13 million homes and served 700,000 customers. As a result, 300
million products were shipped from the West Chester, Pennsylvania headquarters and
produced over $100 million in sales. By 2014, QVCsurpassed its competitors and
served over 300 million homes around the world (Dess, McNamara, Eisner, 2016).
QVC is now the world s largest home shopping firm followed by the Home Shopping
Network(Dess, McNamara, Eisner, 2016). Through research, development, and
marketing, QVC successfully sells over 170 million products annually (Dess,
McNamara, Eisner, 2016, p.C179). QVC uses a variety of strategies to grow and
expand the company be selling a variety of products such as: name brand jewelry,
kitchen gadgets, celebrity endorsed products, home goods, personal products and
novelty items (Dess, McNamara, Eisner, 2016).
Business Strategy Analysis
Segel created QVC after viewing the Home Shopping Network. He was motivated
to improve upon an already great idea by enhancing the viewer experience and
refining the products sold (Dess, McNamara, Eisner, 2016). Segel felt that the
televised shopping industry was a strong market because there were few competitors
and because low expenses wouldn t impact profits.

Effects Of Early Childhood Intervention Programs
When we are born, we have a genetic makeup and biological traits. However, who we
are as human beings develops through environmental and social interaction. Although
there are various debates on the effects of early childhood intervention programs such
a preschool programs on future development, the positive interactions that children
experience during early intervention programs are seen to be correlated to their future
developmental skills in a positive manner. Although heritability has the potential to
alter ones developmental skills, there are still many different modes to which most
children can pertain information and in turn develop. The positive effects seen in the
future are attributed to daily access and use of technology, the routinely habits and
order the institution instills in its students, and the learning environment that the
child is subjected in. It is these tasks and tools that serve to enable school readiness in
the future, enhance cognitive development in young children with regards to literacy
skills and improve motor development.
Childhood is increasingly saturated by technology and the dominance of
technological tools that are used to solve every day problems. Through the use of
these technological tools, they enable and encourage preschool learning children
aged one to five divergent thinking and team problem solving. For example, Lena
Lee explored young preschool children s learning with digital media including Ipad
use. Her findings suggest that
Activist Reform Case
A good and successful activist reform would result in the long term value creation for
the target company, which would benefit both the shareholders and the bondholders.
The activist reform would motivate management to achieve operating efficiencies,
which would improve cash flows and generate better returns for both the shareholders
and bondholders. In conclusion, I find the objections to the strategies of activists
raised by the managers of Commonwealth REIT and other companies in the article
vague. However, the managers need to distinguish between the activists looking for
short term profits and the activists looking for a long term value creation. The former
might destroy some value in the process so the managers need to fend off those
attacks.
It is management s fiduciary duty to maximize the stockholder value, and they
should act accordingly. If the company has extra cash they should return it to the
shareholders in form of either dividends or share repurchase. While it is wise to
hold on to cash to fund future acquisitions, pay off the debt, and have some financial
flexibility however managers like to accumulate as much as financial slack as
possible. The extra cash might also make the company a takeover target. ... Show

They want to use the extra cash for higher compensation, fund bad acquisitions,
invest in negative NPV projects, and acquire trophy assets, among others. The extra
cash would give the managers a cushion, as they won t have to operate firm
profitably as they would be less dependent on the external market for capital. Payouts
to the shareholders would reduce manager s power and they would incur the
monitoring of the outsiders (capital markets, activists, etc.). This managerial behavior
would cause agency dilemma as shareholders and managers will have conflicts of
interest over the payout
Electoral College Benefits
The electoral college is a vital part of the election process because it allows for a fair
election.
The electoral college was created so that states with an extremely large population
cannot control the election. It allows for a level playing field between states with a
large population such as California, Texas, and Florida, and states with a small
population such as Vermont, Wyoming, and Rhode island.
The electoral college forces the President to campaign in small states with few
electoral votes as well as large states. In order to win the presidency, the candidate
needs to get 270 electoral votes. The states with the most electoral votes add up to
less than 270. It is important that the candidate has to campaign in smaller states so ...

The Framers knew of this and wanted to make a system to avoid it. They created the
Electoral College to ensure that the president is chosen by the whole nation, not a
fixed majority, and to make sure that the election is balanced among all states. If they
created it as a true democracy, the largest cities would control the election (Anderson).
When the Founding Fathers were piecing together our government, they did not
intend to make it a true democracy. Instead, they designed it to be a republic in
which the citizens are represented by electors. If it was not this way, rural areas of
the country would have almost no say in the presidential election. Most states follow
the winner takes all rule. This states that the candidate that gets the majority of votes
within a state automatically gets all of the electoral votes (Ross).
Also, with the electoral college system in place, smaller states will have as much
representation as the larger states. Without it, campaigning in high population urban
areas would be highly incentivised. Lower population areas would get zero attention.
This system would favor urban citizens in places where the population is high
enough to sway the election (Anderson). There might even be another situation like
Bleeding Kansas. This is where citizens from different sides of the political spectrum
move to a certain area to sway the vote

Raymond Carver Cathedral Essay. Cathedral by Raymond Carver Essay Example Topics and Well Written ...

  • 1. Raymond Carver Cathedral Essay Crafting an essay on the topic of "Raymond Carver's Cathedral" can be both challenging and rewarding. On one hand, delving into Carver's intricacies demands a keen understanding of his minimalist writing style, subtle narrative techniques, and the profound themes he explores. On the other hand, exploring the nuances of "Cathedral" requires a deep analysis of characters, symbolism, and the underlying emotions that Carver skillfully embeds in his work. One difficulty lies in navigating the fine line between summarizing the plot and offering insightful analysis. It's crucial to avoid falling into the trap of a mere summary, as the real depth of Carver's work lies beneath the surface. Uncovering the layers of meaning demands a careful examination of every word, every interaction, and every silence within the narrative. Furthermore, discussing Carver's impact on literature and his unique contribution to the short story genre adds another layer of complexity. Articulating the profound influence of "Cathedral" on readers and scholars alike requires a balance of personal interpretation and a broader exploration of literary criticism. The challenge intensifies when attempting to connect Carver's life experiences to his work. Unraveling the autobiographical elements in "Cathedral" adds depth to the analysis, but it also requires a delicate approach to respect the artist's privacy and maintain the focus on the literary aspects. In essence, crafting a thoughtful essay on Raymond Carver's "Cathedral" demands not only a solid grasp of literary analysis but also an appreciation for the subtle nuances that make his work a masterpiece. It's a task that requires patience, critical thinking, and an ability to convey complex ideas in a coherent and engaging manner. For those seeking assistance with such essays or similar literary analyses, there are resources available. Professional writing services, likeHelpWriting.net, can provide support in developing well-researched and articulate essays on a variety of topics. • 3. Family Member Passing The passing of a family member is transformational for most people. In this essay I will reflect on two seemingly unrelated events which inspires me to apply for the University of Portland s Doctor of Nursing Practice. Several years ago my fiancГ©s mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and I assisted with the hospice care she received. I experienced palliative care from the side of the caregiver and familymember. Since she was under fifty years old it was a surprise for the family to face her terminal diagnosis. My involvement with her passing was deeply touching and enlightening. One of the many lessons was to ask questions and to care for the patient and the family members. At the same time of my mother in law s passing I was working

The Wifeof Bath begins her prologue by explaining that she considers herself an authority of marriage due to her experience ; the Wife of Bath says, Experience, though no authority/Were in this world, would be enough for me/To speak of woe that married life affords;/For since I was twelve years of age, my lords,/Thanks be to God eternally alive,/Of husbands at the church door I ve had five (Lines 1 6). • 8. What Is An Example Of Consumerism In Fight Club In Fight Club, there are multitudes of examples of the culture industry and its effects on the masses. As an audience, it can be seen from two different perspectives; the first is in terms of the Narrator and the second is through Tyler Durden, a second personality of the narrator who suffers from mental illness. The narrator lives an empty life and tries to find meaning or purpose through the IKEA cataloguewhile decorating his home. In turn, Tyler is the exact opposite he doesn t answer to anybody, he does what he wants, when he wants and doesn t let anything or anyone stop him. Evidently this is the version of himself that the narrator wants to be, as he lives vicariously through Tyler, which he is unaware is his own imagination for the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As an audience, throughout the film it is evident that there is a significant contrast between the narrator and Tyler as they view many things differently. Just like the Fight Club and the IKEA furniture, the narrator becomes obsessed with Tyler and the life he leads. When Tyler is first introduced as a passenger on the airplane, the narrator is immediately drawn to him in a way that is different than any other person he has met. He feels a connection with him that he has not felt before, which is why he calls him when his apartment burns and he loses all of his important IKEA furniture. Tyler tells him it s just stuff (Fight Club) and the things you own end up owning you (Fight Club), which completely contradicts everything the narrator had previously believed about his home and the furniture. Through Tyler, the narrator starts to lose his need for material objects when Tyler tells him Fuck off with your sofa units and strine green stripe patterns, I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let... let s evolve, let the chips fall where they may (Fight Club), instead he focuses on the fighting and his friendship with Tyler since he has finally found something that fills the void in his life and gives it meaning. Though it may seem abstract that Tyler would fit into this argument, it all comes together at the end of the film when the audience finds

This approach is ideal for women who have mild/moderate sagging. All the sutures that Dr. Esmailian uses are absorbable: Therefore, you will not need to have them

One that is often associated with a child wandering off in a grocery store, or somebody taking the wrong turn and not arriving at the correct destination. But the trouble is that it is hardly ever associated with anything deeper, such as the human soul. Yet the reality is, everybody s soulis indeed a little bit lost. And if not lost, at least diverted to a path of pure monotony that drives them to forget the importance of the little things in life. An example of this concept is the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloudby William Wordsworth. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker is wandering through life without purpose. He is simply living a life that he no longer feels any form of connection towards. But then he comes across a field of dancing daffodils and his perspective changes entirely to one of pure joy and ease with his life. Through his application of simile, symbolism, and personification, in his work, the speaker makes his poem far more meaningful. The use of these devices helps to shape the poem s central idea, that is when one stops roaming aimlessly through everyday life and pays attention, they can discover the true beauties that are present in the world and learn to appreciate them a little bit more. One of the main figurative language elements that the speaker uses within his poem is a simile. The title of the poem itself, as well as the first line are repeating similes. The speaker uses this component in the lines I wandered

  • 23. Summary Of The Second Sex By Simone De Beauvoir In The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir questions the idea held in society that those who live simpler lives with no foreseeable challenges are inherently content and satisfied in their lives. Specifically, she disagrees with the idea that women who are oppressed, and thus, due to their lack of opportunities and freedoms, must lead lives that the patriarchal society makes available to them, are happier than the women whose freedom brings them challenges and shortcomings. De Beauvoir claims that we cannot assume someone is happy from what we see, and we cannot simply assume happiness means to that person what it does to us; it is not too clear just what the word happy really mean and still less what true values it may mask. There is no possibility measuring the happiness of others, and it is always easy to describe as happy the situation in which one wishes to place them, (de Beauvoir 261). She continues to discuss this idea of seeing one as happy in the situation the observer views as ideal, specifically the non working woman stripped of her rights, whose lack of purpose and duties is seen as peaceful happiness, in particular those who are condemned to stagnation are often pronounced happy on the pretext that happiness consists in being at rest, (de Beauvoir 261). This is not to say a woman s happiness cannot be found being a housewife, but one cannot assume what will bring women joy and fulfillment, because all people are different with varying wants and needs. Women need all the opportunities available and full liberation in order to be able to find their happiness, if it can be found. Sara Ahmed says, Feminismdoes not guarantee what we will find through this expansion of bodily horizons. It simply opens up the places where we can look, (Ahmed 70). Ahmed goes on to explain how happiness may not even be a healthy goal, as often women are expected to give up much in order to be able to find a happiness that is likely unachievable. Ahmed also discusses the 2002 film The Hours, which tells the stories of three women living in different eras all struggling with their happiness in their vastly different lives. All three women experience other people in their lives telling them that they should be happy

The project aims to explore the relations between discourse, power and social interaction. Consequently, the audience of the political speeches, radio interviews or public letters, the recipients, equally deserve consideration, especially as a group that not only reacts to the discourse, but, at the same time, critically evaluates the argumentation and then responds to it. Other analytical approaches to discourse that focus on the social aspects of dialoguing equally understand discourse to be a form of social interaction (van Dijk, 1985; Boden Zimmennan, 1991). The legacy of the ancient Greek world on medical practice have been tremendous. In the Hippocratic Corpus which is roughly 70 medical works written between 450 and 350 B.C , disease was thought to be caused by isonomia, the predominance of one of the 4 bodily humors, which are Blood, Black bile, Yellow bile and Phlegm (Gill). Thus developing the Theory of the Four Humors created by Hippocrates. According to Gill, each humor is identified with one of the four seasons, universal element and certain qualities. Black bile is associated with Autumn and with earth and is to be cold and dry, while blood is correlated spring and air and is to be hot and moist. Yellow bile is identified with summer and fire and is to be hot and dry, as phlegm is linked with Winter and water and is to be cold and moist. Too much earth made one melancholic, too much air made one sanguine, too much fire made one choleric and too much water made one phlegmatic. As the first step to keeping one healthy, a shrewd Hippocratic physician would prescribe a regimen of:

On the other hand, academic writers try not to use metaphors that much in their published academic papers. Attracting passengers who would have otherwise traveled by car or bus, Southwest was able to maintain high levels of plane utilization, thereby keeping its operating costs low enough to support its discounted fares. A key component of Southwest s ability to manage costs was its reliance on a single type of plane the Boeing 737. * Over time, Southwest s ground and flight personnel became very familiar with the 737; this decreased the airline s average turnaround time between landing a plane and putting it back into the air. * This efficiency, combined with the shrewd use of fuel hedges, buoyed Southwest s profits. * Attempts by competitors to mimic Southwest s LCC model typically were unsuccessful, as demonstrated by the infamous rise and fall of no frills People Express Airlines during the 1980s and the short lived attempts of several major airlines including Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines to create LCC subsidiaries during the 1990s. My interests span throughout a broad variety of topics, and because of this, I did not really know where to start. I have long been intrigued by the world of Japanese animation, and recently, I happened upon a hard copy of my favorite film from when I was a child: Howl s Moving Castle. All of the nostalgic memories I have of watching it when I was a child flooded my mind, reminding me of how much I admire the artwork in the movie. I began to brainstorm ideas related to this. In the end, I boiled it down to a biography of Hayao Miyazaki (the director) and the strong themes in his movies. Combining the two lead me to decide on addressing how his personal life influenced the persuasive themes and symbols he conveys through his beautiful art. My first step to approaching this challenge was to go to the library and research sources that would be useful in completing this paper. After a few hours I had a written list of dependable articles and websites that pertained to his movies. Unfortunately, no credible source discussed his life. By chance, I managed to acquire a book discussing Miyazaki s art and also providing a history of his career; however, this made my list too plentiful, so I chose the facts most relevant to my specific topic. ALTERATIONS, UPGRADINGS, and ADDITIONS are allowed to make these properties economically feasible but, DEMOLITION (partial or total) is a completely different story and NEVER recommended by a serious professional. On the other hand, individually listed properties have significance for what they represent apart from any other property and usually are landmarks that contribute to the sense of place of the neighborhood, city, county, state, and sometimes, nation as well. These properties are individually significant and MUST be considered as a whole, exterior and interior, especially if they are (or will be) accessible to the general public. Since the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, professionals MUST leave personal opinions out of their recommendations and follow the proper protocol. There is never a too simple or too modest component in terms of historic significance, and if a portion of the individually significant property has been altered before, the recommended treatment would be RESTORATION or RESCONTRUCTION and NEVER DEMOLITION. Furthermore, it is very unfortunate that government agencies shifted sides with regards to protecting historic properties. Early preservation efforts in the United States counted with the action of governmental bodies to protect historic resources relevant

Yet as Friedan shows, later studies found that overbearing mothers, not careerists, were the ones who raised maladjusted children.[11] Chapter 9: Friedan shows that advertisers tried to encourage housewives to think of themselves as professionals who needed many specialized products in order to do their jobs, while discouraging housewives from having actual careers, since that would mean they would

Those rules are here evaluated in terms of what they fail to take into consideration. The rules are examined individually and consecutively, and are therefore also reiterated in order to be clear about them. Still, the notion of one s existence as proven by thought is not something which can be measured and translated into a numerical quantity. In fact, most fundamental concepts and their corresponding emotions that make up human life, such as love, are neither indubitable nor quantifiable, though are still held as being true, sometimes more than anything else. This leads me to find that the very first of Descartes rules is a shaky foundation at best. It asks for an acceptance of indubitable truth, and only that truth. Carbon Dioxide And The Effects Of Climate Change Carbon Dioxide and the Effects of Climate Change At the 2016 Oscar awards, Leonardo DiCaprio received a long awaited first Oscar, only to mention climate change as, the most urgent threat facing our entire species. Talk of climate change has become more prevalent in recent years, but has not done so unjustified. Global ambient air temperatures have risen at alarming rates and are projected to rise up to 6 degrees Celsius by the year 2100. Such drastic changes in the air temperature will not only have an effect on heat distribution, but could prove disastrous to individual ecosystems and the overall biosphere of planet earth. Many ecosystems are a delicate balance of plant and animal life and, when altered by slight margins, can harm carbon cycles and imperiled species. Furthermore, evaporation and precipitation rates will also morph over time to match the changing of the seasons, further antagonizing severe weather patterns. In combination, all of these side effects of carbon emissions provide a bleak future for the earth and all of its inhabitants, and if these problems are not addressed properly we could all suffer the consequences for future generations to come. Research suggests that the harmful effects of carbon emissions must be addressed aggressively because many species are suffering in number as well as quality of life, weather patterns and rainfall are behaving more erratically, and the overall temperature of the earth continues to rise at an alarming rate.

  • 50. Effects Of Early Childhood Intervention Programs When we are born, we have a genetic makeup and biological traits. However, who we are as human beings develops through environmental and social interaction. Although there are various debates on the effects of early childhood intervention programs such a preschool programs on future development, the positive interactions that children experience during early intervention programs are seen to be correlated to their future developmental skills in a positive manner. Although heritability has the potential to alter ones developmental skills, there are still many different modes to which most children can pertain information and in turn develop. The positive effects seen in the future are attributed to daily access and use of technology, the routinely habits and order the institution instills in its students, and the learning environment that the child is subjected in. It is these tasks and tools that serve to enable school readiness in the future, enhance cognitive development in young children with regards to literacy skills and improve motor development. Childhood is increasingly saturated by technology and the dominance of technological tools that are used to solve every day problems. Through the use of these technological tools, they enable and encourage preschool learning children aged one to five divergent thinking and team problem solving. For example, Lena Lee explored young preschool children s learning with digital media including Ipad use. Her findings suggest that
  • 51. Activist Reform Case A good and successful activist reform would result in the long term value creation for the target company, which would benefit both the shareholders and the bondholders. The activist reform would motivate management to achieve operating efficiencies, which would improve cash flows and generate better returns for both the shareholders and bondholders. In conclusion, I find the objections to the strategies of activists raised by the managers of Commonwealth REIT and other companies in the article vague. However, the managers need to distinguish between the activists looking for short term profits and the activists looking for a long term value creation. The former might destroy some value in the process so the managers need to fend off those attacks. It is management s fiduciary duty to maximize the stockholder value, and they should act accordingly. If the company has extra cash they should return it to the shareholders in form of either dividends or share repurchase. While it is wise to hold on to cash to fund future acquisitions, pay off the debt, and have some financial flexibility however managers like to accumulate as much as financial slack as possible. The extra cash might also make the company a takeover target. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They want to use the extra cash for higher compensation, fund bad acquisitions, invest in negative NPV projects, and acquire trophy assets, among others. The extra cash would give the managers a cushion, as they won t have to operate firm profitably as they would be less dependent on the external market for capital. Payouts to the shareholders would reduce manager s power and they would incur the monitoring of the outsiders (capital markets, activists, etc.). This managerial behavior would cause agency dilemma as shareholders and managers will have conflicts of interest over the payout
  • 52. Electoral College Benefits The electoral college is a vital part of the election process because it allows for a fair election. The electoral college was created so that states with an extremely large population cannot control the election. It allows for a level playing field between states with a large population such as California, Texas, and Florida, and states with a small population such as Vermont, Wyoming, and Rhode island. The electoral college forces the President to campaign in small states with few electoral votes as well as large states. In order to win the presidency, the candidate needs to get 270 electoral votes. The states with the most electoral votes add up to less than 270. It is important that the candidate has to campaign in smaller states so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Framers knew of this and wanted to make a system to avoid it. They created the Electoral College to ensure that the president is chosen by the whole nation, not a fixed majority, and to make sure that the election is balanced among all states. If they created it as a true democracy, the largest cities would control the election (Anderson). When the Founding Fathers were piecing together our government, they did not intend to make it a true democracy. Instead, they designed it to be a republic in which the citizens are represented by electors. If it was not this way, rural areas of the country would have almost no say in the presidential election. Most states follow the winner takes all rule. This states that the candidate that gets the majority of votes within a state automatically gets all of the electoral votes (Ross). Also, with the electoral college system in place, smaller states will have as much representation as the larger states. Without it, campaigning in high population urban areas would be highly incentivised. Lower population areas would get zero attention. This system would favor urban citizens in places where the population is high enough to sway the election (Anderson). There might even be another situation like Bleeding Kansas. This is where citizens from different sides of the political spectrum move to a certain area to sway the vote
