Nash, is a mathematician who suffers from schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is actually the most
chronic and disabling of the major mental illnesses and it distorts the way a person thinks, acts,
expresses emotions, interprets reality and relates to others. The movie, A Beautiful Mind , John
Nash, who is played by Russell Crowe, is a true story about a mathematician whose life is horrific
because of his disease, schizophrenia. He was an egocentric man who studied Mathematics in
Princeton University. During the whole time that he studied in Princeton, he was trying to come up
with his own original idea. He felt that by only... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

positive symptom are hallucinations which makes people hear voices, feel touched when they are

Essay On Band Failure
Keynen Anderson
Mr. Traywick, 5th Hour

East Kentwood is where I am from. I was in the band every year and I loved it.I have made some of
my dreams come true through pure hard work. Failure is not an option for me anymore. I have
failed before of course. My failure taught me a great lesson that I will never forget again.
After freshman year of high school, I wanted to be in one of the top two bands in high school.
There are three bands above the freshman band. It was a huge goal for me at the time and I
desperately wanted to make it into one of the top bands. Being in the top bands really mattered to
me because I believed it is awesome! After freshman year, I waited all summer to see what band I
was put in. Finally, I looked online and it told me what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was at least hoping that I would get into the second highest band, but the lowest band? I looked
at what I might have been doing wrong. I didn t have a private teacher for bassoon and I didn t
really practice all that much. I just relied on being okay and working hard in the classroom only.
After failing myself and staying in the bottom band after freshman band, I worked much harder
to get into the top bands. I had a couple more years, but I wanted to be in the top band before my
senior year so I can prove to myself that I can do what I dream of doing. I had to change
everything I was doing to get to my dream. It worked out and I made it to the very top band my
junior year. Also, the instrument I play is called a bassoon, which I started studying freshman
year. As you can see, after the first time I saw myself fail, I started working much harder for the
thing I knew I could do and accomplish. I started staying after school to practice my instrument
everyday for at least an hour and I would focus much more on what I was practicing. I also
changed many things in my life. I found out that, working hard in just the classroom won t make
me as successful as I wish to

Jean Baptiste Lamarck And Charles Darwin s Theory Of...
Trends in Evolution
Background information: Jean Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin both thought and had ideas
on how life on Earth got to be the way it is now. Unlike lots other people at that time (1800 s), they
both thought that life had changed gradually over many years and an extended time and was still
changing, that living things change to be better suited and adapted to their environments. Lamarck
is best known for his Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics. He said that change is made
by what the organisms want or need. For example, Lamarck believed that giraffes stretched their
necks to reach food. Their descendants and later generations inherited the resulting long necks.
Lamarck also believed that evolution happens according to a prearranged plan and that the results
have already been decided. (NECSI, 2012). Darwin, on the other hand said that organisms are all
different and that those which happen to have variations that help them to survive in their
environments survive and have more offspring. The offspring are born with their parents helpful
traits, and as they reproduce, individuals with that trait make up more of the population. Other
individuals, that are not so well altered, die off. Darwin also believed that evolution does not
happen according to any sort of plan.
We now know that there are four basic parts by which biological evolution takes place. These
include mutation, migration, genetic drift, and natural selection. Each of these

Negative Long term Effects of Advertising
Advertisements are a way to promote sales of a product or service through visual communication.
Magazine covers, advertisements or any publication embed a set of ideologies. O Shaughnessy and
Standler describe ideologies as sets of social values, ideas, beliefs, feelings and representations by
which people collectively make sense of the world they live in (2012; 174). Ideologies try to
manipulate people into buying a way of life as well as goods (Dyer, 1982:5). Adverts such as the
Pravda vodkaexample above, which appeared in the January 2014 issue of GLAMOUR
magazine add relevance to a product whether it s a certain trend, desire or mutual value in order
for the product to become a highly favoured commodity. Glamour magazine is popular amoungst
young women of all races who are middle class citizens. This specific advert was used to
introduce Pravda s new vodka range aimed at women. It communicates ideologies of feminism,
class, leisure, night life and enjoyment. The purpose of this essay is to use semiology to analyse
the attached article. The Advertiser, should do more than just label or identify the product; it
should also bring flattering associations to mind, associations which will help to sell it. (Dyer,
1982:141) and that is where semiology comes into play.
Semiology is the study of signs and sign systems (O Shaughnessy Standler, 2012). The history of
semiology is further explained and the main cause of intercession: Semiology originated at the end

Strategic Direction And Global Security Essay
The general capabilities required by the Joint Force in 2025 will be a global surveillance and
strike (GSS) network, increased naval and air investments and ensuring cyber technology outpaces
adversaries. Based on the current U.S. strategic direction and global security environment these
capabilities are necessary. Satellites and cyber technology will be part of the design of the GSS
system. The U.S. militarywill be able to strike quickly and remain engaged for increased periods
while additional forces move to the area of concern using the GSS system. Increased Navy and
Air investments in submarines, ships, aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV s) and unmanned
underwater vehicles (UUV s) is critical. The Navy and Air Force allows us to project power to
areas of the world far from our base of operations. Air power also enables us to provide support for
ground forces while providing deterrence and denial of enemy forces. Cyber investments and
securityare critical because cyber technology will increasingly be the engine that runs our future
military and allows us to attack adversary s cyber networks and infrastructure. The U.S. Army will
see a reduction in tactical armor units while the U.S. Marine Corps remains at the current level of

Why I Am A Teacher Essay
Dream Big I clearly remember the day my mother brought home a small wooden desk for me. I
cherish that desk so much because not only did I use it to do my homework, but I also used to play
school . Even though I was very young, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. So the years went by and I
was now a senior in high schooland so close to achieving my goal of being a teacher. I knew
attending collegewould be difficult, my parents, older sister, and I had no clue where to begin, or
if it was even possible for me to attend. My parents saw my desire to go, but their inability to
speak English and not knowing the process to take when entering college did not allow them to
be much help. So I started researching and visiting my counselor. My counselor offered me
information and guided me through each step of the way. I come from an enormous family, I
have a total of 15 aunts and uncles and they have multiple children, and I am proud to say that I
was the first one in my entire family to attend college. I would commute daily and had a part time
job to help my parents pay my way to college, so it was very difficult and tiring. The reason I
commuted was because as a Latino I am very family oriented, so I want to be close to my family
and save. I also had a job, with my job I would help my parents pay for my books, gas, and my
car payment. Even though semester after semester I was always at risk of not returning because of
the cost of tuition, I was able to finish in exactly four

Nature Vs. Nurture
Scientists have been investigating about genetic inheritance and its influence on behavior in
humans. A gene is the unit of heredity that is passed on from parent to offspring. These
investigations have been conducted because there has been a lot of debate about whether human
behavior is more influenced by geneticsor the environment. This debate is also called Nature Vs.
Nurture . Although there is a clear correlation between genetics and behavior, genetic inheritance
only has a partial influence due to the environmental factors that also play a role in shaping
behavior. This statement can be supported by correlational studies that have been performed by
numerous scientists over many years. Correlational studies are used to investigate if two variables
have a relationship with each other, without actually knowing if one causes the other. Scientists
use twin and adoption cases for the correlational study of genes and environment with behavior as
it allows specific variables to be tested. For example, since twins share the same genetic
information, analyzing pairs of twins when they are in different environments helps scientists
record a correlation between genes and environment with behavior. Adoptive studies also help see
if different environments have a bigger influence than genes on behavior by comparing a child s
behavior with with their biological and adoptive parents . The Minnesota Twin Study of 1990 was
conducted by Bouchard to investigate if genetics and

How To Mummification Process Essay
How To Mummify a Body To start the mummification process the body of the deceased would
first be taken to the place of purification to be cleansed. The body is initially washed with palm
wine, and then rinsed with water of the Nile river. One of the embalmers would then make an
incision into the deceased s left side and remove most of the internal organs to prevent them
from decomposing. These organs are then packed in natron salt in order to dry them out and
keep them preserved. At the time the brain wasn t known to be of any importance or have any
function, so a long metal hook was stuck through the deceased s nose, the brain was crushed and
mashed, pulled it out back through the nose and disposed of. On the contrary, the heart was left
in the body because it was believed to be the center of intelligence and feeling ( Mummification )
and was needed in the afterlife. Before the organs were wrapped and returned to the body, they
were each stored in special canopic jars with different gods for the corresponding organs. The liver
was protected by Imsety, the human looking god; the baboon headed god Hapy protects the lungs;

the body is filled with sawdust, and oiled one last time before being completely wrapped in

fingers, and toes, all individually. Then the arms and legs are wrapped and between those layers
of linen, protective amulets are placed to protect the deceased s soul in the afterlife, including
such amulets as the Isis Knot , and the plummet . While all this is happening, a priest would say
prayers to ward off evil spirits in the

Character Analysis Of Lara Croft s Characters In Tomb Raider
Lara Croft is a well known adventurer. From rock climbing in Bolivia to shooting at vicious
monkeys in a forest in India, Lara Croft has done it all. There is much more to this adventurer
though. According to Helen W. Kennedy, author of the article Lara Croft: Feminiets or
Cyberbimbo? , [Lara] is a positive role model for young girls or just the perfect combination of
eye candy and thumb candy for the boys. From her debut in 1996 to now, Lara is also seen as an
iconic female figure within the gaming community. With Lara we are able to see a strong female
role who, unfortunately, is at the same time is overly sexualized. Girls in the gaming community

If this is the case, playing Tomb Raider as a female gamer, mindset it rather hard to hold that
mind set. The developers really focused on accentuating her features that distinguishes a
biological female from a male. Lara s boobs were overly developed, her waist was too thin to
actually support her body and whenever she would jump Lara would sexually moan than create
a noise that was more suited to her actions. There should have been more to Lara than her body.
As their audience changed, their ideas of how Lara needed to be perceived, change. Lara began
to be more than a body. Lara s hot pants have become trousers, her crop top to a vest. Her breasts
have shrunk to a more realistic size... states Archie Bland. Lara was a character with a story.
Over time, her looks were less important and her characterization actually began to shine
through. As the gamers were seeing the changes, many of them were wanting to sympathize as
you saw how rough of an up bringing she had. Tomb Raider s executive producer Ron
Rosenberg, states that, When people plat Lara Croft, they [do not] really want project themselves
into the character. [They are] more like I want to protect her . It is easier to understand why these
adventures were necessary to Lara Croft seen today. Having the game set up so that Lara
appearance was not the main focus, allowed for better representation for women gamers. The idea
of how women should look like, were no longer being pushed upon

The Science Of Science Is Not Always Stable, It Is...
Scientific instability Science is not always stable, it is constantly changing and becoming true and
leaving behind the old ideas. Science requires intuitive minds and opinions to continue its testing to
assure correctness is achieved. In the 1400s it was still believed that the Earth was the center of the
universe but, Nicolaus Copernicusan astronomer and mathematician, developed a model in which
the sun was the center rather than the Earth. This lead to future findings that in fact it was the Sun
and not the Earth in the center. Galileo Galilei, who was influenced by Copernicus, played a major
role during the Renaissance s scientific revolution. His findings came during the late 1500s and
one of his major quotes states, All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the

Philip Augustus s Success Of The Angevin s Failure
Was Philip Augustus success linked to the Angevin s failure?
Philip Augustus undoubtedly faced weak Angevin opposition. However, it was the economic,
administrative and ideological changes that had taken place in Capetian France, which were the
real driving force behind Philip s success. John s comparative weakness and poor leadership
credentials made Capetian success even more likely, but did not make it inevitable. Philip had to
harness the French economy and win the support of his nobility. He was so successful in these
endeavors that he would have been a match for any 12th century European power.
The strength of the Capetian economy was one of the most important factors in Philip s success.
Philip personally was very interested in developing Paris. He built Les Halles as a market place,
paved many streets and invested heavily in infrastructure. The creation of a large market place
and better transportation meant that the economy picked up and Paris became wealthier. This
meant that Philip could call on Paris for financial support when he went on crusade. Assarting and
the creation of communes furthered strengthened Philip s economy. Between 1150 and 1180 the
forests of Othen and Orleans were cleared, and over 40 new villages created in their wake.1 As
Hallam pointed out, the king allowed these villages to be created and granted them special
privileges in exchange for rent being paid directly to the crown. This cut out the middle men (the
local nobility) and greatly

Role Of Authority In Siddhartha
Authority plays a large role in Siddhartha s journey to finding enlightenment. Siddhartha finds
himself unhappy and questioning the religion he has known his whole life. He begins to dream
vividly and lie awake at night overthinking how he could confront his feelings. He has come to
believe that there is no more knowledge to be learned from his father, Siddhartha had begun to
feel that the love of his father and mother, and also the love of his friend Govinda, would not
always make him happy, give him peace, satisfy and suffice him. He had begun to suspect that his
worthy father and his other teachers, the wise Brahmins, had already passed on to him the bulk and
best of their wisdom but his soul was not at peace. Chapter 1, pg. 3. Siddhartha... Show more

However, he defies the Buddha in the way that he objects everything he teaches in questioning
that if the key to achieving enlightenment is ascending the world of cycles and circles, what did
Gautama do to break his own cycle? Siddhartha doesn t understand the doctrine of salvation and
escape from the world if in fact the world is eternally one. Gautama admits the flaw, but continues
on, The teaching which you have heard...is not my opinion, and its goal is not to explain the world
to those who are thirsty for knowledge. Its goal is quite different; its goal is salvation from the
suffering. That is what Gautama teaches, nothing else. Chapter 3, pg. 27. Siddhartha argues the
impossibility of reaching enlightenment via others teachings. Enlightenment, Siddhartha says, is
something a man must do alone. This belief being why Siddhartha continued on his path instead
of joining the Shramanas like Govinda. At this point in the book I consider Siddhartha himself to
be an authority figure. He is now entering a new stage of his life with only his self determination
to keep him en route to his goal. He has walked away from all of his teachers, even Buddha,
because they failed to satisfy Siddhartha with their teachings of the nature of self. He is now

Similarities Between Fahrenheit 451 And Captain Beatty
Ray Bradbury s Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian science fiction novel about a society in which books
are outlawed. Central to the plot are the characters Montag and Captain Beatty. The two characters
have some similarities, but they posses some important differing qualities. Guy Montag and Captain
Beatty both have different views on books, society and the future. The first significant difference
between Guy Montagand Captain Beatty would be their view on society as a whole. The society of
Fahrenheit 451is characterized as being one void of free, deep thought, and patience. In Montag s
society, people are not troubled with the hard, sometimes unanswerable questions of life; they
simply want to be happy , they all live for pleasure [and] titulation (Bradbury 56). Both Montag
and Beatty recognize that this has turned society hollow and hedonistic, but respond to this

The National Association Of Social Workers Code Of Ethics...
Social work is a very unique profession. The other professions that are in the same realm as social
work are very specialized, however, social workers must have a broad range of knowledge in order
to help their clients. This is where multiple agencies come together to make sure professionals are
properly trained and knowledgeable. In the field of social work, ethicsand values are the key
principles that provide the basis for the mission. It is these principles that guide the decisions
and actions of everyone in the profession. Without a clear set of guiding principles, social work
professionals could do more harm than good. This profession sees people during highly
emotional times in their lives, and that can be extremely challenging. The National Association of
Social Workers Code of Ethics not only sets the standards, but also guides a social worker through
dealing with ethical dilemmas. As we evolve as a society, so have the guiding principles and
values for the social work profession.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has written a code of ethics that serves
many purposes. The main purpose is to identify the core ethics and values that provide the
foundation for the profession. It details six basic principles for social workers to follow: service,
social justice, dignity and worth, human relationships, integrity, and competence (National
Association of Social Workers, 1999). The code acts as an ethical guide for students, and those

Mesothelioma Research Paper
What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a unusual form of cancer that occurs in the mesothelium (a thin layer of tissue that
covers most of our internal organs.) In most cases, the tissue near the lungs is affected. However,
cases have been reported in which other body organs are affected with this condition. This form of
cancer is extremely aggressive and often proves deadly if it is malignant Mesothelioma.
Know the Risk Factors
Although quite a few materials can possibly cause this disease, mesothelioma is mainly attributed
to exposure to asbestos as reported by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry of the
CDC. In addition, Asbestos has been classified by the EPA as a human carcinogen.

role in the lives of Puritans. They ate, slept, and breathed this. Through each of the writings of
William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, and Jonathan Edwards readers can see the essence of Puritanism
. The three principles of Puritans (God s grace, simplicity, and divine mission) can be mirrored
through each author s works. My personal favorite author of the three is Anne Bradstreet. I am
an emotional person and I admire that all of her writings are from the heart and completely
relatable on every level. There is something about the way that she writes that makes you feel
what she is feeling, because in some way in your own personal life there is a similar situation. In
her poem Upon the Burning of Our House she talks about watching her house burn. Although I
have not watched my house burn, I have seen things so dear to me get caught in flames so to
speak. God has more than once tried to put things in perspective for me and remind me that this
world is temporal and not eternal, that my focus should be on Him. I can relate with Bradstreet on
the value of earthly and eternal treasures. Anne Bradstreet s poetry spoke more than just in the
colonial times. It is ever more present in today s time and just as

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Trinitrotoluene
TNT is more accurately known as Trinitrotoluene (more specifically 2,4,6 trinitrotoluene), a
Class A explosive. Its molecular formula is C7H5N3O6 OR C6H2(CH3)(NO2)3 OR
C6H2(NO2)3CH3. This compound includes the elements Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and
Oxygen, notably 37.0% Carbon, 2.2% Hydrogen, 18.5% Nitrogen, and 42.3% Oxygen. It is an
explosive chemical (a combustible solid) with toxic and hazardous effects. Commonly
experienced symptoms due to exposure mainly include headaches, weakness, anemia, liver
injury, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dermatitis, cyanosis, toxic hepatitis, etc. It s an incredibly
hazardous explosive, considering it is absorbed by the skin, its vapors are toxic, toxic fumes are
released when decomposed due to high temperatures, and it detonates under excessive shock or
heat. Physically, TNT is a colorless or pale yellow and odorless solid or crushed flake, and it is
synthetic (does not occur naturally on Earth). It has a molecular weight of 227.132 g/mol,
hydrogen donor count of 0, hydrogen acceptor count of 6, relatable bond count of 0, complexity
of 292, topological polar surface of 138 A^2, mass of 227.018 g/mol, heavy atom count of 16,
covalently bonded unit count of 1, and formal charge of 0. Its structural shape changes. Its boiling
point (point at which it explodes) is 464Вє F (240 deg C) at 760 mmHg. It is also insoluble, but has
a few exceptions. At 18 deg C, it is soluble in the following solvents: chloroform, ether, and carbon
tetrachloride.

Homeric Seafaring
Surveying the Validity of Homeric Seafaring
Ancient Greeks predominantly lived in on island archipelagos or on the coast of nearby
mainland because mainland Greece is one of Europe s most mountainous countries, which
complicates animal and crop husbandry. Correspondingly, seafaring has always been paramount
in the Aegean, especially for the Greeks, due to ease of transportation, trade networks, and
defensive needs. Mainland Greeks utilized seafaring to bring in necessities cheaper than they
could produce them at home, and they saved time traveling by land, rather than trek the long
way through the mountains. When living on islands, sea travel is a necessity to contact
outsiders and participate in extensive trade. Even Greeks in Homer s epics appear to know the
sea well (Mark 2005, 145). Despite Greek seafaring s prominence, archeological and textual
evidence for seafaring in the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Aegean is relatively sparse, with a
near lack of physical boat remains. Filling in holes, such as with literary sources, in the timeline
of Aegean seafaring provides a greater understanding of the development of Greek ships, as well
as the cultural implications of the technology invoked. The most extensive textual source of this
era s seafaring is Homer s epics, but they are epic poetry of the eighth or early seventh century BCE
concerning Greece s heroic, mythical past. Homer s Iliad and Odyssey are set in the Bronze Age, yet
include Iron Age elements (Mark 2005,

Step 1 Choose a Good Topic
When writing an essay, it is important to choose a topic that is not too broad. For example, do not
write about football. Choose something more specific, like football drills, the greatest football
team, football equipment, football practice, etc.
It is important that you can think of three main ideas that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is important to write a rough draft to share with a friend or parent to edit. When editing, ask
someone to check that you stayed on topic and used proper writing conventions, such as good
spelling, usage, mechanics and grammar.
Last, you want to write a final copy. This should be error free. It can be written in pen or typed.
Most teachers like a typed copy; however, neatly written essays in pen are acceptable as well.
Teachers generally grade an essay on the following criteria: interesting content, organization and
writing conventions.
Writing a good five paragraph essay can take some time. Do not wait until the last minute and make
sure to have someone edit it before you turn in the final copy to your teacher.

How to Write an Argumentative Essay Step by Step
Argumentative essays intimidate lots of students because of the structure an instructor expects.
Instructors will expect well written, tightly argued essays, but that doesn t mean the paper needs to
be twenty pages long or should refer to a dozen or more sources. What it does mean, however, is
that a student takes a stand on an issue, presents his side of the argument while refuting his
opposition, and also integrates outside sources that help support his point of view.

In This Next Step We Uncover The Metaphysical World Around
In this next step we uncover the metaphysical world around us. The first text is About Meditating
on God s Unity, by Bonaventure. In this text we reflect on the idea of being, the all encompassing
state that we fall under in every second of every moment we are doing anything. God, just like us
comes under this category of being, as being comes not just from existence, but rather our essence.
The next text comes from Elizabeth Johnson called Speaking about the Living God, which focuses
on the name of God. God never tells us what God s gender is; only that God is. So by assigning
God a gender we limit the power that God has, by making God only male we limit the feminine
side of God s love as well as those who are uncomfortable with a ... Show more content on

The demon readily believes the fallacy that one s true self comes from taking care of the earthly
body and live an easy life, while Indra finds out that the true atman comes from the disembodied
self, or through living a life without earthly ties.
The final text comes from Huston Smith, a converted Hindu, called The Beyond Within . This
text elaborates more on the Hindu traditions of living a detached life. The best way to live this
way is to embrace the world and all that it has to offer; in this way we can experience the joy and
knowledge of the people and the world around us.
All of these texts share a profound sense of ambiguity. They show us that we can never truly be
sure if our metaphysical assumptions of the world are the correct ones. For example, in the
more religious texts like Bonaventure, Johnson, Smith, and The Chandogya Upanishad we see
various different ideas of who and what comprises god, and oddly enough all of them are
correct. The beauty of ambiguity is that we can t say that one idea about what is is the right
one, because the Hindu appreciation of many gods has just as much proof as the Christian idea
of one God. We also see this in the not so certain idea of the concept of being in texts like
Schrodinger s Cat, and The Allegory of the Cave both of which focus more on our perceptions of
the world. Where we can be so uncertain what actually is the best state for us to be in, one of
forced knowledge and certainty, or

Adolescents with bipolar disorder are not as likely to control their obesity and they are three times
more likely to attempt suicide or have major depressive disorder than those who do not have BD.
In her article, Knopf referenced a study that the National Comorbidity Survey provided: they
surveyed adolescents from ages 13 to 17. 295 of them had BD, 1,112 had major depressive disorder
(MDD), and 8,716 who had neither. According to the results of the research, there were no
significant differences in overweight or obesity: obesity was about 17% in all of the groups that
they had surveyed. Although the obesity rate was about the same in all groups, adolescents who
had BD and overweight had a notably higher likelihood of attempting suicide, being a victim of
sexual abuse, binge eating, and conduct disorder. Currently, the link between BD, overweight, and
suicide is unknown. Fortunately, the researcher concluded that an early intervention with
adolescents with BD and obesity might improve the future mental and physical health of the
adolescents. Knowing and applying this would help youth workers in preventing suicide: they
should recommend intervention to parents who have adolescents with these disorder. They could
also teach parents to be aware of the medications that their teens are taking. Teenagers with BD and
obesity should be taking medications with lower propensity for weight gain. Additionally, they could

The Apostle John, the one Jesus loved was said to have lived longer than any of the twelve
Apostles after the death and resurrection of Christ. The Gospel in his name provides one of the
most commonly used circular for evangelism today, just as it did late in first century Asia Minor.
Many traveled to learn from him and hear his stories about Jesus. Too many John was the primary

Judaism. His church was Jewish Christians that knew little about Greeks, but live along side of

Nicola Sturgeon Case Study
SNP s Nicola Sturgeon is set to announce that, under a review of the family law, grandparents
could be given an automatic right to see their grandchildren. This aims to help grandparents, who
are considered hidden victims of a family break up.
According to a recent Scottish parliament briefing for MSPs, paternal grandparents find it difficult
to maintain contact with their grandchildren after parents separate or divorce acrimoniously. This is
especially true if the children continue to live with their mother.
This can have a drastic effect on the hidden victims, especially if they played a role in bringing up
the children while the parents work full time. Unfortunately, grandparents don t have any

will focus on the welfare of the child and their best interest. If it sees that it is better for the child,
the court will make that order. The court will also take into account the views of a mature

Double Consciousness In Toni Morrison s Beloved
W.E.B. DuBois defines double consciousness as not only looking at one s self through their own
eyes but also through the eyes of others. This is an interesting way of looking at life because it
applies to all cases. While one lives life, there will always be that thought of what the other
person is thinking about one s self. This is also the case for Sethe in the novel Beloved written by
Toni Morrison because Sethe s action can be interpreted in many ways depending on the
perspective. Sethe killed Beloved so Beloved didn t have to endure slavery, worries and takes close
care of Denver, and goes to work on a plantation as the wife of Halle. With that being said, for each
of that description there is a different description from someone else s eyes; to everyone else who
read the news like Stamp Paid and Paul D, Sethe was wrong for killing Beloved she acted like an
animal, and with that while she was seen as a wife, she was also seen as an animal, by school

The Shortcomings of the Articles of Confederation
The years following the American Revolution, better known as the Critical Period, were some of
the most vulnerable moments in the extensive history of the United States. The Critical Period is
infamous for a post war recession, disorganization and competition of states, as well as a total lack
of unity about the nation. The Articles of Confederation, ratified during the onset of this tumultuous
period, added new dimension to early Americans idea of national government. The Articles formed
a loosely united country under a highly restricted federal government. This apparent aversion of
strong central government was rooted in the former colonists fear of a sequel to their monarchial
horror that was England. Some believe that the Articles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Five years earlier, in a letter from the Rhode Island Assembly to Congress the assembly concluded
that taxation on imported goods creates inequality between the commercial and the agrarian

levy importation taxes geared towards the Northern, more commercial part of America. This letter
speaks to the injustices of taxation, and taxation was the main reason for Shays s Rebellion. Shays s
Rebellion caused that unjust and disorganized means of taxation further exemplifies the failure that

something that has plagued my generation with confusion and doubt. I grew up at the tail end of

Like most couples Corvino assumes that they must engage in sexual activity for the same reason
that any heterosexual couple would that it is pleasurable. Sex can help unite a couple and open an
avenue of growth that would only help to strengthen the bond between two people.
One of the first major argument is that it is unnatural , Corvino easily dismisses this argument
because under that explanation nothing is normal not clothing, organized religion or governments.
The only thing that would be natural would be nature. In nature there are some species that do
engage in homosexual activity. So by this natural standard it could not be used to reject Tommy and
Jim.
Another argument against homosexuals is that it is harmful to society through the spread of
sexually transmitted diseases (STD), by denying population growth and how it harms our
youth. The first issue is addressed by simple process of elimination if homosexual males are at
the highest risk of getting an STD and lesbian women at the lowest risk. Than Corvino is able to
challenge the argument by concluding that if you are only choosing a partner based on risk of
disease than women should only be with other women as the risk is the lowest. However most
people do not chose a partner based on these principles. As for the issue of not having sex for only
procreation purposes is absurd. Even the Catholic church prohibits sex during pregnancy and for
pleasure

In the past periods, the northwestern part of Sudan and southwestern part of Egypt (Kehl and

The estimated recharge rates of the pluvial period were a little high at the Uweinat highlands and

HPV: A Cause for Concern
1.Introduction
Human papillomavirus or HPV is one of the most common viruses that are transmitted through
sexual activity. A virus is sometimes referred to an obligate intracellular parasite, which cannot
multiply outside of a living cell. Transmission can occur through hand to hand contact, exposure to
contaminated blood, and shared objects. Typical exposure is achieved through skin to skin contact
during intercourse. HPV can pass from person to person with no signs or symptoms. Development
of symptoms can occur years after initial infection. Many cases of HPV can clear up on their own.
If a reoccurring case of HPV is left untreated, then a papilloma ... Show more content on

Detections methods have improved over the years for identification with the use of swabs from
cutaneous epithelium or plucked hairs. These methods primarily identify beta and gamma types of
viruses. Most infected individuals eliminate the virus without developing clinical manifestations.
Closely related types of virus can show distinct pathologies in HPV. While their genetic
sequences can be similar, their pathologies and virulence can be different. HPV six and eleven
share 85% sequence identity. HPV six is found in anogenital warts while HPV eleven is primarily
responsible for laryngeal papillomas. HPV thirteen shares a 78% likeness with both HPV six and
eleven but doesn t cause the same pathologies. HPV seven and forty have an 87% resemblance in
sequence and both cause butchers warts.
3.Structure and Function
HPV is a non enveloped virus with double stranded DNA that is protected by an icosahedral capsid.
An icosahedral is a polyhedral with twenty faces. The genome consists of double stranded circles
with approximately eight thousand base pairs containing eight or nine open reading frames. Gene
expression involves multiple promoters and complex patterns of splicing. The HPV genome
separates into three regions; the long control region, early region, and a late region. The early
region contains no coding for structural proteins in

Beethoven s 9th Symphony Analysis
This production of Beethoven s 9th Symphony was presented by the Lubbock Symphony
Orchestra in conjunction with The Lubbock Chorale and The Texas Tech University Choir. The
performance was held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m.
As a performer in the University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which
allowed me the opportunity to observe two different audiences. The audience on the night of the
13th was obviously better prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was
evident in the audience s reactions to the ends of movements. The long standing and unwritten rule
of waiting until the end of a major work to clap was followed silently and diligently. This audience
was mostly made up of adults obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons
of the Lubbock SymphonyOrchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students,
specifically Texas Tech and surrounding area high school students. At this performance the amount
of attending children was few to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience
mimicked the preceding audience in size and age, however, this audience s reaction of clapping at
the end of movements was highly undesired by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining
members of the audience that understand the unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts.
These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great
performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not only do these translate to distractions for the
performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the
intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience
reaction can also take away and distract from the atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case
was a relatively small and intimate concert hall.
Because this concert was only a performance of Beethoven s 9th Symphony, I will react to
movements two and four, the Scherzo and Recitative respectively. The Scherzo (second) movement
was characterized by Beethoven s ability to keep the constant presto eighth note motive throughout

The Music Of Hip Hop
Hip hop is a very broad subculture due to the fact that it is comprised of so many other
subcultures. The four main factions of Hip hop are MCing(master of ceremonies) better
identified today as rapping, DJing (disk jockey), breakdancing and Graffiti. Break dancing is
known as the physical manifestation of the hip hop style (Rose 47). The Hip hop subculture has a
long lineage and the four main factions where all foraged together in the same place at the same
time. Even though the culture at the time was viewed as deviant hip hop slowly became a very
popular subculture in America. Due to the fact that Hip hop is so popular makes me believe that
the breaking subculture has been absorbed into mainstream culture.
Break dancing was first performed by underprivileged black and Puerto Rican youth in the mid
1970 s at the height of disco s popularity. The purpose of a disco DJ at the time was to hide or
erase the breaks in between the songs. It was within these breaks that break dancers would come
out and [execute] moves that imitated the rupture in the rhythmic continuity as it was highlighted
in the musical break . Hence the name breakdancers.(Rose 47) The moves that are done in
breakdancing share resemblances to a number of Afro diaspora dances and well as African
American dances, Afro Brazilian martial arts dance Capoeira and even common dances don in the
1920 s. While the dance moves are deeply rooted in the cultures that created them, they are not just

The second chapter, The Nanny Dilemma, gives us an understanding that Dominique just like
many New York nannies leave their hometowns, families and everything behind to work. I can
agree with what Cheever mentioned Here the children are the boss, the children run the home .
It s the truth, because in United States were have lots of working parents who have to leave
their children at day cares or after school programs. An approximate earning for a full time nanny
is less than 600 dollars a week. Personally, being a nannie is a huge responsibility and sometimes
extra work comes without extra pay. The sad part about nanny roles is being away from your own
children and just like Dominique s case, the children see her all the time, and the children

China Culture

introduce and educate the reader about the geography, economy, political party, and the military that
make up the mysterious country to the East. Fourth largest country in the world, China makes up
almost the entire East Asian Landmass. China s 9,596,960 square kilometers in total area, features

Agriculture has steadily declined in China since the economic reforms in the early 1980s.
Nevertheless, 43 percent of China s workers are involved in agriculture. China is the world s
largest exporter of merchandise goods (Eckart, 2016). In 2009, 48 percent of China s Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) came from industry. Although, the U.S. receives about 17 percent of
China s exports, the Chinese government restricts import of U.S. goods and films. China s
natural abundance in Coal made for an excellent source of energy, but proved inadequate to
supply the Country s needs. Consequently, to meet the economy s needs, China became the
fourth largest importer of oil. China is the world s leading producer of hydroelectricity (Defense,
2010). Even though China s economy is well on the rise, and projected to have the largest
economy in the world by 2030, it is technically a developing country because of its low GDP.
With that being said, statistics show that the amount of Chinese living below the poverty line has
decreased from 53% in 1981 to 8% in 2001 (Defense, 2010). Furthermore, the Chinese
Communist Party has been in power since the communist party won the civil war in 1949.

Survival In Auschwitz Summary
The Holocaust was a genocide that occurred under Adolf Hitler s rule in Germany where almost
six million Jews were killed in camps and others were worked to death which aimed to fulfill
Hitler s idea of the purification of race. Primo Levi, a survivor of the Holocaust wrote the book
Survival in Auschwitz (to illustrate) the system inside the camp and his experience as a prisoner.
Capitalist modernity is the combination of capitalism and the ideas of modernity. In a capitalistic
modernized society, people are exposed to the ideas of enlightenment, temporality, panopticon and
capitalism. The uniqueness and normality of the camp reflects the ideas of capitalist modernity as

In 1787, an English philosopher in the name of Jeremy Bentham came up with the idea of
panopticon. Panopticon is a set of societal practices that made people submissive in a society.
Panopticon is present in the concentration camps because the prisoners did not try to escape or
struggle against the SS. Levi states that this unjust law is openly in forces [and] is recognized
by all (88). There is a relationship between panopticon and the normality of the camp which is
unsaid but the prisoners are always aware of that mysterious faculty (63). Being inside the camp
is somewhat the same as being part of a capitalistic modernized society in a way that there are set
laws that the government expects people to follow. People are docile because they are aware that
if they are caught doing an act that goes against the law, they would have to deal with the state
apparatus. Similarly, the prisoners are aware that almost every move they make is monitored by an
SS or is bound to be noticed. Panopticon is another reason why there is normality in the

Essay on In Defense of Historical Fiction
The genre of historical fiction novels can be subdivided into many categories and often crosses
genres, such as historical mysteries and romances. The traditional definition of the historical
fiction genre is fiction set in the past where the author is writing from research rather than
personal experience. This definition leaves a lot of room for interpretation, controversy, and
contradiction. Critics in the media, even when they praise individual historical novels in their
reviews, somehow manage to turn this praise into criticism of the genre as a whole. In 1950,
author Howard Fast, a historical novelist himself, wrote: This is an era of many historical novels,
few of them good and very few indeed which have more than a nodding... Show more content on

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a classic example of a successful historical
fiction novel depicting the life and adventures of youthful boys in the Mississippi River town of
St. Petersburg, Missouri and various locations along the river through Arkansas. Readers of this
novel are confronted with difficult themes such as slavery and revolution in the south before the
Civil War. In chapter 6 of the novel we see Huck s father, Pap, confronted with a finely dressed
and educated free African American. As the man passes Pap states, There, now that s a
specimen. They call that a govment that can t sell a free nigger till he s been in the State six
months. Here s a govment that calls itself a govment, and lets on to be a govment, and thinks it
is a govment, and yet s got to set stock still for six whole months before it can take a hold of a
prowling, thieving, infernal, white shirted free nigger. (Twain 151). This little speech by Pap shows
that he s a blatant racist who treats African Americans as though they are not at all human beings.
This novel is full of authentic points of view from the various characters Huck encounters on his
adventures. Twain uses dialog such as this to educate readers about past conflicts such as the Civil
War and slavery. Although highly controversial, this novel has been used as an educational tool in
English literature classrooms for years. The point is there are numerous historical fiction

A systematic error is a constant inaccuracy that is present throughout the whole experiment,
therefore affecting all of the data. It is often difficult to minimise the effects of systematic errors as
they are complicated to detect and cannot be analysed statistically because all inaccuracies have

Women s Rights And Abolitionist Movement Essay
The Beginning of Women s Rights Abolitionist Movement
Women s Rights Abolitionists Back in the nineteenth century men and women were not treated
equally as they are now. Women did not have as much freedom as the men did and that caused a
national movement. Not only were the women segregated from the men, but the discrimination
against the African Americanrace was a huge ordeal as well. With both movements combined, it led
to a controversial development at that time. Not only were women fighting for equality, they were
also fighting for the prejudice to end amongst the different races. The beginning of the Women s
Rights Movement and the Abolitionist Movement was not only a historic development, but it
changed the world forever. First, let s talk about what caused the women s rights movement and
how it not only paved the way for the abolitionist movement but, how powerful the campaigns were
when combined. In the nineteenth century, the women s main role was to be a house wife. Women
were often stuck at home doing chores and taking care of the children. They were not allowed to
vote, hold a title in public office, work, own property, or even get an education (Women s Rights.
(n.d.), 2016). The women of the nineteenth century wanted to change those rules so they fought for
equality. There were many women who were brave enough to stand up for their rights and publicly
speak about their thoughts and civil liberties towards equality between men and women. In

Grants Pros And Cons
Do you really think grants are a reasonable way to get through life in the states? Some may
disagree with that statement due to the fact they don t use grants as much or don t know of such a
thing. America can truly help with any situation a citizen might face with the help of grants.
Citizens may also deny help from the government due to their funds or careers but it is available
to anyone that discovers or looks into it. They may never get to access them due to a low social
status which does not matter. Grants may be a reasonable way to make it through to most citizens
but not many. The ability to let citizens chose whatever career they want is almost like choosing

of Argentina clutched their chests in shock. They had just been told by President Juan Peron that
their beloved and revered Evita had passed away. While the masses wept in her memory a select
few mourned her death with celebratory toasts of champagne. Nevertheless, the Argentine streets
were lined with mourners and flowers from the moment her death was announced until her funeral
on August 11th. Eva defied stereotypes and her memory is forever embedded in the foundations of
Latin American social reform. Transcending her life was her myth and transcending her myth was

As the campaign neared the election, Eva became the first candidate s wife in history to travel
with her husband. She stood by his side during his speeches and personally distributed campaign
items, greetings, and kisses. She even tried to speak in his absence when he was ill, but the
crowd wanted no parts of it. Peron won the election, and Eva soon began transforming into Evita
( The Official Eva Peron Website ).After Peron s election, Eva took a job at the Central Post and
Telecommunications office. She acted as a liaison between the workers and the unions, fighting
for workers rights. Her relationships with the two groups granted her considerable sociopolitical
power, and her social work was beginning to form a solid foundation. And we began little by

Essay about Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration
Condition:
Macular Degeneration is a problem in the part of the eye that controls your sharpest central
vision. It is a group of diseases that result in a loss of detailed vision. The brain will not just leave
the spot empty, so it learns to fill it in with spotty macular cell damage. People most of the time
don t tell their doctors (opthalmologists) about it until it is well in advance.
There are two types of Macular Degeneration. Juvenile Macular Degeneration affects the central
vision in young children. This takes place in the macula, or the central region of the retina. The
retina is where we are able to read and to distinguish colors. The main symptoms ... Show more

Wet Macular Degeneration causes more severe loss of vision. Dry Macular Degeneration is the
age related type. There is no proven cure for dry Macular Degeneration.
Cause:
Basically what my research is stating is that there is a major genetic component that contributes to
this disease. There are three general types of hereditary Macular Degeneration. The first is called
early onset. This is when you get it when you are four years of age up to seven. In this type both
parents and their children can be affected. This means it is dominantly inherited. Most of the time
this is called Best Disease or Viteliform Macular Degeneration.
The second type is called middle onset. This is from five years of age up to twenty years of age.
This type is called Stargarett s disease. This is the Juvenile Macular Degeneration. This type is
recessively inherited. Meaning that this type can appear even if only a couple family members
have it.
The third type is called late onset. This is when you get it in your thirties or forties. This type may
have dominant or recessive inheritance.
Really the cause of Macular Degeneration is unknown. Recently researchers have discovered that a
group of genes called ABCR contribute to the disease. When someone has these genes the likeliness
of this person to form Macular Degeneration increases by 30 percent. In most situations Macular
Degeneration is

A Case Plan For Children And Families Essay
According to the Administration for Children Families (2014) case plans are formed by child
protection staff and families who work together to identify goals for the family (Laracuente,
2016). A case plan is a written text that explains why the child is considered to be in need of
protection, it provides a lucid statement of the functions and responsibilities of all participants in
addressing the child s care and security needs (Laracuente, 2016). Furthermore, a case plan must
also include stipulations that address the child s developmental needs and assist them to gain the
skills and sense of well being that will allow them to realize their ability (McBain, Sedky, Kjerulf,
2010). All activities, discussions, and contact with the child and familywill be guided by the case
plan while it is in effect (McBain, Sedky, Kjerulf, 2010). Case planning is a method used to
provide services that identify needs, sets goals and determines the importance of actions that are
to be taken by a client or the social service worker. Case planning can, therefore; be described as
the process of assessment, organizing, and advocacy for options and services to meet an individual
s needs through communication and available resources (McBain, Sedky, Kjerulf, 2010).Often the
goals of the case planning focus on maximizing children s safety and diminishing their risk of
harming the purpose of the ongoing intervention, outcomes, and actions required to achieve the
goals (Laracuente, 2016).

The Myth Of Multitasking By Nass Summary
Multitasking is an action where one person can ultimately act on two tasks or more at once. In the
article, The Myth of Multitasking , Nass summarizes that the cause of this issue is simply that the
human brain slows the thought process of doing multiple tasks at once instead of one task at a time.
This conflict is important because it poses potential risks to us in a mental or physical way. We
should teach the younger generation this valuable information which will reduce the amount of
problems that deal with multitaskingin the future. In Nass research, one of his arguments was that
multitasking is a way to slow your mind down while succeeding in tasks slower than usual. People
who chronically multitask show an enormous range of deficits. They re basically terrible at all sorts
of cognitive tasks, including multitasking (Flatow). He says that these results show that people who
believe that they are multitasking effectively aren t actually multitasking effectively. They just
think that they are and they wrong because they had made less progress combined than at one task
at a time. In my view, I believe that multitasking is impossible to do because I was taught that the

Iago Is Not Evil
To be evil, villainous or Satan like, is to state that one does hurtful things to other citizens for the
pure enjoyment of themselves. Hitler, Stalin and Napoleon are all leaders, who undoubtedly can
be stated as evil. In William Shakespeare s tragedy Othello, the character Iago is considered evil. It
is argued though that he is not evil, just simply a human. Iagothroughout the play becomes
insecure over his decline in power leading him to become jealous and get revenge on those who
contributed to this feeling of self doubt. Though Iago at times is satisfied with the way he treats
others, his motives are humanistic and the way he deals with his envy for others makes him one of
the manliest men in William Shakespeares Othello.
The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Iago s self doubt and jealousy is a natural result of being human, regardless of the way he decides
to deal with these emotions, he manages them more honestly and manly than anyone throughout
the play. Iago is well aware of the emotions he has and though he does not admit to anyone he is
feeling this way, he knows it personally. It is quite apparent to the audience, that Iago has once
before felt jealous; Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy!/It is the green eyed monster which doth
mock/The meat it feeds on (III.iii.165 167). Iago s previous jealousy does not show that he is
evil or weak but rather that Iago is the only man throughout Othello to reveal his truly humanistic
emotions. Iago knows about the `green eyed monster of jealous` and does not freat to speak of it
knowing it is human to be jealous and that is exactly what he is. By studying Shakespeare`s
depiction of Iago, it can be concluded that if Iago felt as if being jealous was not human, he would
not warn others of it and rather let them deal with it themselves. The way Iago thinks, provides
proof to the audience that Iago neither is villainous or evil but just a human living in a society
where being powerful is important, thus, bringing

  • 3. Essay On Band Failure Keynen Anderson Mr. Traywick, 5th Hour Carpenter East Kentwood is where I am from. I was in the band every year and I loved it.I have made some of my dreams come true through pure hard work. Failure is not an option for me anymore. I have failed before of course. My failure taught me a great lesson that I will never forget again. After freshman year of high school, I wanted to be in one of the top two bands in high school. There are three bands above the freshman band. It was a huge goal for me at the time and I desperately wanted to make it into one of the top bands. Being in the top bands really mattered to me because I believed it is awesome! After freshman year, I waited all summer to see what band I was put in. Finally, I looked online and it told me what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was at least hoping that I would get into the second highest band, but the lowest band? I looked at what I might have been doing wrong. I didn t have a private teacher for bassoon and I didn t really practice all that much. I just relied on being okay and working hard in the classroom only. After failing myself and staying in the bottom band after freshman band, I worked much harder to get into the top bands. I had a couple more years, but I wanted to be in the top band before my senior year so I can prove to myself that I can do what I dream of doing. I had to change everything I was doing to get to my dream. It worked out and I made it to the very top band my junior year. Also, the instrument I play is called a bassoon, which I started studying freshman year. As you can see, after the first time I saw myself fail, I started working much harder for the thing I knew I could do and accomplish. I started staying after school to practice my instrument everyday for at least an hour and I would focus much more on what I was practicing. I also changed many things in my life. I found out that, working hard in just the classroom won t make me as successful as I wish to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Jean Baptiste Lamarck And Charles Darwin s Theory Of... Trends in Evolution Background information: Jean Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin both thought and had ideas on how life on Earth got to be the way it is now. Unlike lots other people at that time (1800 s), they both thought that life had changed gradually over many years and an extended time and was still changing, that living things change to be better suited and adapted to their environments. Lamarck is best known for his Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics. He said that change is made by what the organisms want or need. For example, Lamarck believed that giraffes stretched their necks to reach food. Their descendants and later generations inherited the resulting long necks. Lamarck also believed that evolution happens according to a prearranged plan and that the results have already been decided. (NECSI, 2012). Darwin, on the other hand said that organisms are all different and that those which happen to have variations that help them to survive in their environments survive and have more offspring. The offspring are born with their parents helpful traits, and as they reproduce, individuals with that trait make up more of the population. Other individuals, that are not so well altered, die off. Darwin also believed that evolution does not happen according to any sort of plan. We now know that there are four basic parts by which biological evolution takes place. These include mutation, migration, genetic drift, and natural selection. Each of these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Negative Long term Effects of Advertising Advertisements are a way to promote sales of a product or service through visual communication. Magazine covers, advertisements or any publication embed a set of ideologies. O Shaughnessy and Standler describe ideologies as sets of social values, ideas, beliefs, feelings and representations by which people collectively make sense of the world they live in (2012; 174). Ideologies try to manipulate people into buying a way of life as well as goods (Dyer, 1982:5). Adverts such as the Pravda vodkaexample above, which appeared in the January 2014 issue of GLAMOUR magazine add relevance to a product whether it s a certain trend, desire or mutual value in order for the product to become a highly favoured commodity. Glamour magazine is popular amoungst young women of all races who are middle class citizens. This specific advert was used to introduce Pravda s new vodka range aimed at women. It communicates ideologies of feminism, class, leisure, night life and enjoyment. The purpose of this essay is to use semiology to analyse the attached article. The Advertiser, should do more than just label or identify the product; it should also bring flattering associations to mind, associations which will help to sell it. (Dyer, 1982:141) and that is where semiology comes into play. Semiology is the study of signs and sign systems (O Shaughnessy Standler, 2012). The history of semiology is further explained and the main cause of intercession: Semiology originated at the end of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Strategic Direction And Global Security Essay The general capabilities required by the Joint Force in 2025 will be a global surveillance and strike (GSS) network, increased naval and air investments and ensuring cyber technology outpaces adversaries. Based on the current U.S. strategic direction and global security environment these capabilities are necessary. Satellites and cyber technology will be part of the design of the GSS system. The U.S. militarywill be able to strike quickly and remain engaged for increased periods while additional forces move to the area of concern using the GSS system. Increased Navy and Air investments in submarines, ships, aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV s) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV s) is critical. The Navy and Air Force allows us to project power to areas of the world far from our base of operations. Air power also enables us to provide support for ground forces while providing deterrence and denial of enemy forces. Cyber investments and securityare critical because cyber technology will increasingly be the engine that runs our future military and allows us to attack adversary s cyber networks and infrastructure. The U.S. Army will see a reduction in tactical armor units while the U.S. Marine Corps remains at the current level of equipment and personnel. After each capability are associated Risk. • 7. Why I Am A Teacher Essay Dream Big I clearly remember the day my mother brought home a small wooden desk for me. I cherish that desk so much because not only did I use it to do my homework, but I also used to play school . Even though I was very young, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. So the years went by and I was now a senior in high schooland so close to achieving my goal of being a teacher. I knew attending collegewould be difficult, my parents, older sister, and I had no clue where to begin, or if it was even possible for me to attend. My parents saw my desire to go, but their inability to speak English and not knowing the process to take when entering college did not allow them to be much help. So I started researching and visiting my counselor. My counselor offered me information and guided me through each step of the way. I come from an enormous family, I have a total of 15 aunts and uncles and they have multiple children, and I am proud to say that I was the first one in my entire family to attend college. I would commute daily and had a part time job to help my parents pay my way to college, so it was very difficult and tiring. The reason I commuted was because as a Latino I am very family oriented, so I want to be close to my family and save. I also had a job, with my job I would help my parents pay for my books, gas, and my car payment. Even though semester after semester I was always at risk of not returning because of the cost of tuition, I was able to finish in exactly four ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Nature Vs. Nurture Scientists have been investigating about genetic inheritance and its influence on behavior in humans. A gene is the unit of heredity that is passed on from parent to offspring. These investigations have been conducted because there has been a lot of debate about whether human behavior is more influenced by geneticsor the environment. This debate is also called Nature Vs. Nurture . Although there is a clear correlation between genetics and behavior, genetic inheritance only has a partial influence due to the environmental factors that also play a role in shaping behavior. This statement can be supported by correlational studies that have been performed by numerous scientists over many years. Correlational studies are used to investigate if two variables have a relationship with each other, without actually knowing if one causes the other. Scientists use twin and adoption cases for the correlational study of genes and environment with behavior as it allows specific variables to be tested. For example, since twins share the same genetic information, analyzing pairs of twins when they are in different environments helps scientists record a correlation between genes and environment with behavior. The body is initially washed with palm wine, and then rinsed with water of the Nile river. One of the embalmers would then make an incision into the deceased s left side and remove most of the internal organs to prevent them from decomposing. These organs are then packed in natron salt in order to dry them out and keep them preserved. At the time the brain wasn t known to be of any importance or have any function, so a long metal hook was stuck through the deceased s nose, the brain was crushed and mashed, pulled it out back through the nose and disposed of. However, it was the economic, administrative and ideological changes that had taken place in Capetian France, which were the real driving force behind Philip s success. John s comparative weakness and poor leadership credentials made Capetian success even more likely, but did not make it inevitable. Philip had to harness the French economy and win the support of his nobility. He was so successful in these endeavors that he would have been a match for any 12th century European power. The strength of the Capetian economy was one of the most important factors in Philip s success. Philip personally was very interested in developing Paris. He built Les Halles as a market place, paved many streets and invested heavily in infrastructure. The creation of a large market place and better transportation meant that the economy picked up and Paris became wealthier. This meant that Philip could call on Paris for financial support when he went on crusade. Assarting and the creation of communes furthered strengthened Philip s economy. • 24. Homeric Seafaring Surveying the Validity of Homeric Seafaring Ancient Greeks predominantly lived in on island archipelagos or on the coast of nearby mainland because mainland Greece is one of Europe s most mountainous countries, which complicates animal and crop husbandry. Correspondingly, seafaring has always been paramount in the Aegean, especially for the Greeks, due to ease of transportation, trade networks, and defensive needs. Mainland Greeks utilized seafaring to bring in necessities cheaper than they could produce them at home, and they saved time traveling by land, rather than trek the long way through the mountains. When living on islands, sea travel is a necessity to contact outsiders and participate in extensive trade. Even Greeks in Homer s epics appear to know the sea well (Mark 2005, 145). Despite Greek seafaring s prominence, archeological and textual evidence for seafaring in the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Aegean is relatively sparse, with a near lack of physical boat remains. Filling in holes, such as with literary sources, in the timeline of Aegean seafaring provides a greater understanding of the development of Greek ships, as well as the cultural implications of the technology invoked. The most extensive textual source of this era s seafaring is Homer s epics, but they are epic poetry of the eighth or early seventh century BCE concerning Greece s heroic, mythical past. The best way to live this way is to embrace the world and all that it has to offer; in this way we can experience the joy and knowledge of the people and the world around us. The Gospel in his name provides one of the most commonly used circular for evangelism today, just as it did late in first century Asia Minor. Many traveled to learn from him and hear his stories about Jesus. Too many John was the primary person to learn all you wanted about Jesus. • 30. Nicola Sturgeon Case Study SNP s Nicola Sturgeon is set to announce that, under a review of the family law, grandparents could be given an automatic right to see their grandchildren. This aims to help grandparents, who are considered hidden victims of a family break up. According to a recent Scottish parliament briefing for MSPs, paternal grandparents find it difficult to maintain contact with their grandchildren after parents separate or divorce acrimoniously. This is especially true if the children continue to live with their mother. This can have a drastic effect on the hidden victims, especially if they played a role in bringing up the children while the parents work full time. • 32. Double Consciousness In Toni Morrison s Beloved W.E.B. DuBois defines double consciousness as not only looking at one s self through their own eyes but also through the eyes of others. This is an interesting way of looking at life because it applies to all cases. While one lives life, there will always be that thought of what the other person is thinking about one s self. This is also the case for Sethe in the novel Beloved written by Toni Morrison because Sethe s action can be interpreted in many ways depending on the perspective. Sethe killed Beloved so Beloved didn t have to endure slavery, worries and takes close care of Denver, and goes to work on a plantation as the wife of Halle. With that being said, for each of that description there is a different description from someone else s eyes; to everyone else who read the news like Stamp Paid and Paul D, Sethe was wrong for killing Beloved she acted like an animal, and with that while she was seen as a wife, she was also seen as an animal, by school teacher taking notes of her actions... The Shortcomings of the Articles of Confederation The years following the American Revolution, better known as the Critical Period, were some of the most vulnerable moments in the extensive history of the United States. The Critical Period is infamous for a post war recession, disorganization and competition of states, as well as a total lack of unity about the nation. The Articles of Confederation, ratified during the onset of this tumultuous period, added new dimension to early Americans idea of national government. The Articles formed a loosely united country under a highly restricted federal government. This letter speaks to the injustices of taxation, and taxation was the main reason for Shays s Rebellion. Shays s Rebellion caused that unjust and disorganized means of taxation further exemplifies the failure that was the Articles of Confederation. I grew up at the tail end of the AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) epidemic and can remember when major news networks were blaming homosexuals for the rapid spread of this particular disease. Like most couples Corvino assumes that they must engage in sexual activity for the same reason that any heterosexual couple would that it is pleasurable. Sex can help unite a couple and open an avenue of growth that would only help to strengthen the bond between two people. One of the first major argument is that it is unnatural , Corvino easily dismisses this argument because under that explanation nothing is normal not clothing, organized religion or governments. The only thing that would be natural would be nature. In nature there are some species that do engage in homosexual activity. So by this natural standard it could not be used to reject Tommy and Jim. Another argument against homosexuals is that it is harmful to society through the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), by denying population growth and how it harms our youth. The first issue is addressed by simple process of elimination if homosexual males are at the highest risk of getting an STD and lesbian women at the lowest risk. Than Corvino is able to challenge the argument by concluding that if you are only choosing a partner based on risk of disease than women should only be with other women as the risk is the lowest. However most people do not chose a partner based on these principles. As for the issue of not having sex for only procreation purposes is absurd. The performance was held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m. As a performer in the University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which allowed me the opportunity to observe two different audiences. The audience on the night of the 13th was obviously better prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was evident in the audience s reactions to the ends of movements. The long standing and unwritten rule of waiting until the end of a major work to clap was followed silently and diligently. This audience was mostly made up of adults obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons of the Lubbock SymphonyOrchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students, specifically Texas Tech and surrounding area high school students. At this performance the amount of attending children was few to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience mimicked the preceding audience in size and age, however, this audience s reaction of clapping at the end of movements was highly undesired by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining members of the audience that understand the unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts. These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not only do these translate to distractions for the performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience reaction can also take away and distract from the atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case was a relatively small and intimate concert hall. Critics in the media, even when they praise individual historical novels in their reviews, somehow manage to turn this praise into criticism of the genre as a whole. Women s Rights And Abolitionist Movement Essay The Beginning of Women s Rights Abolitionist Movement Women s Rights Abolitionists Back in the nineteenth century men and women were not treated equally as they are now. Women did not have as much freedom as the men did and that caused a national movement. Not only were the women segregated from the men, but the discrimination against the African Americanrace was a huge ordeal as well. With both movements combined, it led to a controversial development at that time. Not only were women fighting for equality, they were also fighting for the prejudice to end amongst the different races. The beginning of the Women s Rights Movement and the Abolitionist Movement was not only a historic development, but it changed the world forever. First, let s talk about what caused the women s rights movement and how it not only paved the way for the abolitionist movement but, how powerful the campaigns were when combined. In the nineteenth century, the women s main role was to be a house wife. Women were often stuck at home doing chores and taking care of the children. They were not allowed to vote, hold a title in public office, work, own property, or even get an education (Women s Rights. (n.d.), 2016). • 51. Essay about Macular Degeneration Macular Degeneration Condition: Macular Degeneration is a problem in the part of the eye that controls your sharpest central vision. It is a group of diseases that result in a loss of detailed vision. The brain will not just leave the spot empty, so it learns to fill it in with spotty macular cell damage. People most of the time don t tell their doctors (opthalmologists) about it until it is well in advance. There are two types of Macular Degeneration. Juvenile Macular Degeneration affects the central vision in young children. This takes place in the macula, or the central region of the retina. Cause: Basically what my research is stating is that there is a major genetic component that contributes to this disease. There are three general types of hereditary Macular Degeneration. The first is called early onset. This is when you get it when you are four years of age up to seven. In this type both parents and their children can be affected. This means it is dominantly inherited. Most of the time this is called Best Disease or Viteliform Macular Degeneration. The second type is called middle onset. This is from five years of age up to twenty years of age. This type is called Stargarett s disease. This is the Juvenile Macular Degeneration. This type is recessively inherited. Meaning that this type can appear even if only a couple family members have it. The third type is called late onset. This is when you get it in your thirties or forties. This type may have dominant or recessive inheritance. Really the cause of Macular Degeneration is unknown. Recently researchers have discovered that a group of genes called ABCR contribute to the disease. When someone has these genes the likeliness of this person to form Macular Degeneration increases by 30 percent. In most situations Macular Degeneration is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. A Case Plan For Children And Families Essay According to the Administration for Children Families (2014) case plans are formed by child protection staff and families who work together to identify goals for the family (Laracuente, 2016). A case plan is a written text that explains why the child is considered to be in need of protection, it provides a lucid statement of the functions and responsibilities of all participants in addressing the child s care and security needs (Laracuente, 2016). Furthermore, a case plan must also include stipulations that address the child s developmental needs and assist them to gain the skills and sense of well being that will allow them to realize their ability (McBain, Sedky, Kjerulf, 2010). All activities, discussions, and contact with the child and familywill be guided by the case plan while it is in effect (McBain, Sedky, Kjerulf, 2010). Case planning is a method used to provide services that identify needs, sets goals and determines the importance of actions that are to be taken by a client or the social service worker. Case planning can, therefore; be described as the process of assessment, organizing, and advocacy for options and services to meet an individual s needs through communication and available resources (McBain, Sedky, Kjerulf, 2010).Often the goals of the case planning focus on maximizing children s safety and diminishing their risk of harming the purpose of the ongoing intervention, outcomes, and actions required to achieve the goals (Laracuente, 2016). • 55. The Myth Of Multitasking By Nass Summary Multitasking is an action where one person can ultimately act on two tasks or more at once. In the article, The Myth of Multitasking , Nass summarizes that the cause of this issue is simply that the human brain slows the thought process of doing multiple tasks at once instead of one task at a time. This conflict is important because it poses potential risks to us in a mental or physical way. We should teach the younger generation this valuable information which will reduce the amount of problems that deal with multitaskingin the future. In Nass research, one of his arguments was that multitasking is a way to slow your mind down while succeeding in tasks slower than usual. People who chronically multitask show an enormous range of deficits. They re basically terrible at all sorts of cognitive tasks, including multitasking (Flatow). He says that these results show that people who believe that they are multitasking effectively aren t actually multitasking effectively. They just think that they are and they wrong because they had made less progress combined than at one task at a time. In my view, I believe that multitasking is impossible to do because I was taught that the human... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 56. Iago Is Not Evil To be evil, villainous or Satan like, is to state that one does hurtful things to other citizens for the pure enjoyment of themselves. Hitler, Stalin and Napoleon are all leaders, who undoubtedly can be stated as evil. In William Shakespeare s tragedy Othello, the character Iago is considered evil. It is argued though that he is not evil, just simply a human. Iagothroughout the play becomes insecure over his decline in power leading him to become jealous and get revenge on those who contributed to this feeling of self doubt. Though Iago at times is satisfied with the way he treats others, his motives are humanistic and the way he deals with his envy for others makes him one of the manliest men in William Shakespeares Othello. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Iago s self doubt and jealousy is a natural result of being human, regardless of the way he decides to deal with these emotions, he manages them more honestly and manly than anyone throughout the play. Iago is well aware of the emotions he has and though he does not admit to anyone he is feeling this way, he knows it personally. It is quite apparent to the audience, that Iago has once before felt jealous; Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy!/It is the green eyed monster which doth mock/The meat it feeds on (III.iii.165 167). Iago s previous jealousy does not show that he is evil or weak but rather that Iago is the only man throughout Othello to reveal his truly humanistic emotions. Iago knows about the `green eyed monster of jealous` and does not freat to speak of it knowing it is human to be jealous and that is exactly what he is. By studying Shakespeare`s depiction of Iago, it can be concluded that if Iago felt as if being jealous was not human, he would not warn others of it and rather let them deal with it themselves. The way Iago thinks, provides proof to the audience that Iago neither is villainous or evil but just a human living in a society where being powerful is important, thus, bringing ...
